COURSE INFORMATION PROGRAMME COURSE CODE SEMESTER SESSION

BACHELOR OF QUANTITY SURVEYING (HONS) COSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY V QSM602 05 SEPT 2011 JAN 2012

COURSEWORK
INTRODUCTION In civil engineering construction, detailed analysis and extensive research is needed to be conducted at all level, even long before the design and contract process can be carried out. Gathering of information on previous successful projects, current resources, general site condition, latest of technologies and many more are essential in the process of proposing an infrastructural and civil engineering type of development.

OBJECTIVES The assignment aims to enable the students : To identify the components and its functions in civil engineering structures To understand the element required for the preparation of civil engineering project To comprehend the process, material and technology of the assigned civil engineering construction. COURSEWORK BRIEF This coursework is divided into several tasks as follows: Task 1 Produce a written report containing a brief literature review on one (1) type of civil engineering construction by analyzing the types available, major components, typical construction process and materials used. Each group will be assigned to one of the following construction: Road and Highways Railway Bridges Earth Retaining Structure Tunnel Land Reclamation Dam The report should also include one (1) case study on the assigned civil engineering construction, of an existing real life project (either completed or ongoing, preferably local not foreign), taking into account the followings; Brief project background Parties involved Type of construction used Problems and steps taken to resolve them Students are also required to produce A0 sized presentation board(s) for the purpose of presentation, which will include necessary details of your work. Task 2 Demonstate your understanding of a civil engineering works in an A0 base sized model. The model must consider the followings: The proposed construction technologies to be used, with considerations of the above discovered problems and proposed solutions General method statement and material to be used

Students are divided into a group of 8 to 9 members. 2. Groups are allowed to cross-reference with other group members. 3. All assumptions related to each task shall be submitted separately in the Appendix. SUBMISSION AND PRESENTATION 1. Written report The Literature Review and Case study will be presented in the written document. The document shall be submitted as a standard document not more than 3000 words with minimum 5 references. All supporting documents i.e relevant drawings/plans in different sizes must be folded to A4 size and shall be comb-bind together. 2. Presentation Poster/ Board A presentation poster/board will display in brief your findings in your written report. You are limited to the maximum of two A0 sized presentation board /poster. Please consider to include only the important and highly essential bits of your findings, to accommodate to the limitations. Model Each group is required to produce a model on a standard A0 sized base for the proposed civil engineering works. The design must be an authentic design and not simply taken from other project. The model must display cross sections to illustrate the major components of your structure. Presentation Each group is required to make a brief but formal presentation in English for the appointed assessors .
