Q1 A uniform rope lies in a form of heap at a corner of a table. A negligibly small portion
of the rope is pulled and released. The rope starts accelerating down. Assuming no
friction anywhere and that the heap as such is stationary, find the value of the
acceleration of the rope, when half of it is unwound, upto two decimals. (g = 10 m/s2)

Q2. A square frame ABCD consists of three identical rods A

B
& a wall on one side as shown in the figure. The joints
at A, B, C & D are frictionless. The midpoints of AB & BC
are connected by a light inextensible string Let T be the
tension in this string & R be the magnitude of the total

reaction at the point A. Find the value of the expression .

Q3. A small block of mass m is attached to the bottom end of a vertical spring of spring
constant k and the top end is pulled up so that the mass gets uniform acceleration a
3mg 2
upwards. When the mass has a velocity V  , the upper end of the spring is
k
abruptly stopped. Find the eventual maximum compression of the spring thereafter.

Q4. A rope rests on two platforms that are both inclined at an

angle θ as shown in the figure. The rope has uniform mass
density, and its coefficient of friction with the platforms is 1.
The system has left-right symmetry. What is the largest
possible fraction of the rope length that does not touch θ θ
the platforms? What angle θ allows this maximum value?

Q5. In the arrangement shown in the figure

the cylinders have masses m1 and m 2 , and
radii r1 and r2 as shown the strings are light
and inextensible. If the system is set free from
an initial state of rest, find the accelerations
of the masses and the tension in each string.

Q6. A brick is thrown from ground level, at an angle θ with respect to the horizontal.
Assume that the long face of the brick remains parallel to the ground at all times,
and that there is no deformation in the ground or the brick when the brick hits
the ground. If the coefficient of friction between the brick and the ground is µ, what
should θ be so that the brick travels the maximum total horizontal distance before
finally coming to rest? Hint: The brick slows down when it hits the ground.
