Title of Unit: Regions Title of Lesson: What is a region?

Lesson Plan #1 out of 5

1. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson is designed to build knowledge of what a region is. This lesson also introduces the topic of region and its different features that can be shared. 2. Target Population: grade level: 2nd grade skill level: students at all grade levels grouping: whole group discussion, small group discussion, independent notes.

3. Objectives: G6.2.1 Define region and provide examples of regions. 4. Procedure: 1. The teacher will have students free write what they think a region is and if they have ever heard of the term region. 5 min. 2. Have students discuss with their group what they wrote down. After discussions students will share one idea from each group that they all agreed on and it will be written on the board. 7 min. 3. Teacher will define region as an area that shares on or more features. The shared features make one region different than the other. 5 min 4. Discuss that regions can share features such as government, religion, and population. 5 min 5. Define for the students that government is a system that makes and carries out rules and laws. Define that population is people who live in that area. Religion is a system of faith or worship. 10 min 6. Teacher will let students know that region comes in different shapes and sizes and can change over time. 5 min 7. Have students discuss with their shoulder partner what can be categorized as a region now that they know what a region is. 8 min 8. Discuss with the class the different ideas that the students came up with that can be categorized as a region. 5 min 9. Assessment: An informal assessment for day 1 would be to make sure that each student is contributing to both their group discussion and whole group discussion. I will walk around during the small group discussion to make sure they are participating. 10. Reflection:

What skills do students need in order to be successful with this lesson? - Students will need to be able to understand and listen actively as the teacher discusses what a region is. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? - To follow up this lesson I will have students learn about borders, boundaries, and belts that make up a region. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? - I will work with students who dont grasp the concepts when the students are discussing in small group or partner share. Where do you anticipate having problems with this lesson? I can anticipate that the students might get a little anxious because this is the first day of the unit and they are just getting information.
