Karen Mari Instrumental Lesson Plan E231

1) Grade level: 6th Grade

2) Musical Learning Objectives:

The students will work together to create a chordal accompaniment to the traditional Irish song Ill Tell My Ma, and will play the accompaniment in time with the conductor.

6.4.1 6.2.2

Create a pattern of I, IV and V chords to accompany a song. Play a given pitch pattern, rhythm pattern, or ostinato part, using appropriate tempo and dynamics while watching a conductor.

3) Materials

(or Resources):

Boomwackers ({G,B,D} {D,F,A} {C,E,G}) Document Cam Notation for Ill Tell My Ma Piano

4) Sequence (or Procedure): a. Divide the students into three equal groups, and place them in different spots around the room. b. Explain that we will be celebrating St. Patricks day today by playing a traditional Irish folk song called Ill Tell My Ma c. Ask the students to conduct along in two as you demonstrate the melody.

Karen Mari Instrumental Lesson Plan E231 d. Display the notation, and ask the students to say the solfege while you write it in
e.

Explain that there are three chords in this song, the I, IV, and V chords, and that the I chord has Do, Me, and Sol, the IV chord has Fa, La, and Do, and the V chord has Sol, Ti, and Re. Play the chords and notes for the students.

f.

Ask the students to talk to a neighbor and try to identify sections of the song that have solfege groupings like the I, IV, and V chords

g. Ask the class to share what they discussed h. Write in the chords in the notation as students find them i. Distribute the boomwhackers! Make sure that each group will produce one chord apiece Tell students they are welcome to play their boomwhackers gently on the floor only as you hand them out, as long as they stop when you give a cut off. j. Give the cut off for silence. Tell the students that they are divided into chords. Indicate which group is which chord, and ask the groups one at a time to play their boomwhackers all together once to produce a single chord. k. Practice playing simple chord progressions by cuing the groups (I-IV-V-I) l. Tell the class that they are going to be playing the chords they had previously written in the notation for Ill Tell My Ma m. Practice playing the chord progression of Ill Tell My Ma with two hits per measure. Conduct the class as they accomplish this task. n. Add the melody Sing the song while the class plays the accompaniment.

5) Assessments: I will observe the students working together to produce I, IV, and V chords

Karen Mari Instrumental Lesson Plan E231 I will observe the students identifying solfege and chord patterns I will observe the students performing an accompaniment for the song Ill Tell My Ma

6) Accommodations for students with a disability: If a student is visually impaired, he/she/they will still be able to participate in analyzing the song through listening, and will certainly be able to play the boomwhackers. If a student is hearing impaired, he/she/they will still be able to participate in the visual analyzing of the song, including using solfege and identifying chords. If a student is physically impaired (i.e. in a wheel chair), he/she/they should still be able to participate fully in the lesson.

7) Integrated Arts Extensions:

Identifying patterns Students identify solfege patterns that indicate chords in the music. Identifying patterns is an important skill in math, language, and science. Working in teams Students work as three separate units to produce three chords. Teamwork is a valuable skill in all aspects of life, but most closely applies to physical education in this instance.

8) Explanation: Write a paragraph to explain how your lesson plan address EACH of these topics Auditory Learning o The lesson addresses auditory learning because it is primarily based on hearing the I, IV, and V chords both alone and in relation to a melody. Visual Learning

Karen Mari Instrumental Lesson Plan E231 o The lesson addresses visual learning by using the visual notation of the melody to analyze the solfege and chord structure of the song. Kinesthetic Learning o The lesson addresses kinesthetic learning by having the students conduct along with the starting melody, and by having them keep the beat with the boomwhackers.

21st Century Skills: Communication o Students communicate when they work together to determine the solfege patterns that indicate certain chords Collaboration o The students work together to use solfege to analyze the melody of a given song, and to perform the chords they determine to go with it. Critical Thinking (analysis, evaluation) o The students use solfege to evaluate patterns that likely indicate chords to accompany a given melody. Creativity (synthesis) o The students synthesize a chordal accompaniment to go along with a given melody.
