The advantages of data control cannot be under-estimated. A common theme in data management is input once, use many times.
The backbone of the oil and gas solutions set is the data. As owner-operators capital project timelines are ever shortening, manpower resources are harder to find for design and construction. Also, margins for operations and maintenance are being squeezed razor-thin, so managers must look to reduce costs and increase productivity. By employing a solution set specifically addressing your type of work, data is properly managed throughout the engineering work process, eliminating data re-entry and data misuse and improving engineering data quality. By adding a new approach to managing and reviewing this data, unnecessary documents can be eliminated during the engineering process, timelines can be shortened, handover can be streamlined, and operations and maintenance can be improved. The advantages of data control cannot be underestimated. A common theme in data management is input once, use many times. With the Bentley oil and gas solutions set, reuse of data provides the following advantages: More accurate designs earlier in the project cycle More options can be evaluated even with limited resources Ability to address economics alongside engineering Reduction in engineering man-hours of 20-30 percent Reduced cost of structural steelwork Improved plant quality, safety, economics, and sustainability Improved plant maintenance and better spare parts inventory control
Front-End Engineering
In the oil and gas industry, compressing project timescales is more important than project cost, and the time-constraining factor on all projects is securing materials and equipment to get the job done. Making good decisions upfront and securing increasingly long lead time items of equipment such as vessels, pumps, and valves is of critical importance and Bentley

Bentleys solution for oil and gas provides the data management platform that allows users to realize the benefits suggested above in the Coopers & Lybrand report. Bentley is also working closely with FIATECH to implement the ISO standard data framework for exchange of information during the lifecycle. The Bentley Plant framework (for the oil and gas solution) is based on ISO 15926, which ensures that the framework is open and easily accessible to third-party software and supports intelligent data exchange between owneroperators and their contractors.
With the ISO15926 framework, Bentleys oil and gas solutions complete the lifecycle by allowing data reuse for rapid project startup, both for greenfield and brownfield projects. Effectively managing the data for reuse delivers significant time and cost benefits by getting new projects started faster and with more complete information.
Case Studies
Giprotyumenneftegaz developed project deliverables and cost estimates for the West-Salym oil field development in Russia. It was a complex project integrating many disciplines (process site, industrial area, camp, and utilities). A huge volume of information, including survey maps, models, drawings, explanatory notes, cost estimates, and bills of materials were generated by the many companies who worked on this project. Bentley oil and gas solutions were employed during all design phases, allowing Giprotyumenneftegaz to maintain coordination across disparate teams and to automate the generation of accurate deliverables. A 3D model of the site landscape allowed the company to make the site leveling exact, as well as to calculate earthworks, resulting in a savings of over six months in the life of the project. PlantSpace Design Series was used to create 3D models of the facilities under design.

VECO reused intelligent site-4 data to create the drill site 5 design. This resulted in a 30 percent cost reduction, with estimated savings of over 23,000 man-hours and approximately $2 million for this drill site. VECO used the Bentley oil and gas solutions to perform the design and manage the data. ProjectWise security greatly reduced the misuse and loss of data. The ability to control all of the disciplines and users at different levels helped to maintain project integrity. ProjectWise also allowed VECO to manage and distribute the construction documents. VECO credits its cost and time reduction to better management of data and smarter use of shared information through Bentley oil and gas solutions. KBR uses Bentleys plant structural analysis, design, and documentation tools for an existing refinery facility to support the increased production of a fluid-catalyst cracking unit. A structural evaluation of the 47-year-old reactor structure in Toledo, Ohio, was required to determine the feasibility of the proposed expansion. Bentleys STAAD product was used to generate wind load on this complex structure. Modeling was performed using the graphical user interface. Record low execution time for this project earned praises from the client. KBR saved 300 man-hours and $30,000 as a result of enhanced 3D graphical views and application of wind load.

Quip S.A. used Bentleys plant visualization and simulation for its offshore platform P53. Located 120 kilometers off the Brazilian coast and moored at a depth of 1,080 meters, this floating producing unit (FPU) platform will have the capacity to produce and process 180,000 barrels of gas and six million normal cubic meters of gas a day. The FPU will not store the produced oil and gas in its tanks, as they are immediately transferred to other platforms. Quip S.A. developed the FPU P53 platform and presented all review sessions using Bentley Navigator , which gave the engineers and technical team access to 3D visualization so potential problems could be identified in advance. This was the first 3D visualization initiative in Brazilian offshore projects, and now other Brazilian EPCs are starting to adopt this concept.

M7 Offshore of Norway innovatively used Bentley technologies to upgrade Bilabri-FPOS. Whakaaropai is a Suezmax-sized vessel operating on the Maui B oil field off New Zealand for Shell Todd Oil Services Ltd. Built in 1976 and converted in 1995/96, she was renamed Bilabri and upgraded as part of a project to engineer a new test separator module and a riser balcony. Tying a new module into an existing one of this size is normally a complex engineering task, but a model was created using Bentley software with accuracy down to a millimeter by scanning the site and obtaining a point-cloud model. Bentley CloudWorx converted the interface sections into CAD elements to be imported into the CAD model. The firm also used PlantSpace to produce quick, nonintelligent P&IDs, 3D models and ISO production, and 3D steel models and drawings. Bechtel Corporation is using Bentleys ProjectWise system to collaborate on the Jamnagar Export Refinery Project (JERP) in India. JERP has a plot plan bigger than that of London and a target completion time of less than 36 months. Bechtel is tackling this megaproject using engineering resources dispersed around the globe, including a design and engineering team of 2,500 professionals in 10 design locations, 19 offices, and eight countries. In total, the project will employ more than 90,000 people during construction and call for the fabrication and installation of 109,170 metric tons of steel, about 5 million meters of varied-size pipe, more than 4,000 pieces of major equipment, and more than 110,000 isometrics. Nearly 1,000 users in nine locations are employing ProjectWise to ensure that more than 50,000 drawings are available to the correct discipline at the correct location. With ProjectWise, the drawings can be worked on collaboratively, enabling designers in one location to view the results of design teams in other offices almost immediately. This means Bechtel can rapidly distribute the project work to the different locations in a much more granular way by unit, by discipline, and even by drawing as the needs of the project dictate. A key advantage realized by the project team is the ability to search for and find all files that were changed in the last week, and to cross reference the location of the files found with the location of the person who last changed them. This enables the JERP team to regularly reassess and redistribute their project content, optimizing productivity and reducing network traffic.
Quip S.A. developed the FPU P53 platform and presented all review sessions using Bentley Navigator, which gave the engineers and technical team access to 3D visualization so potential problems could be identified in advance.

Using ProjectWise to track and manage data, Bechtel has been able to facilitate the reuse of more than 25 percent of the design and engineering information generated during construction of the original facilities. This has proved to be critically important in meeting the projects aggressive schedule.
In Conclusion
Clearly, as these applications by major players in the oil and gas industry show, there is a growing demand for software solutions that properly manage data throughout the engineering work process. Owner-operators who are deploying these solutions have eliminated unnecessary documents, reduced expenditures and, in many cases, seen an immediate return on their software investment. The Bentley oil and gas solutions set offers owner-operators a comprehensive suite of products that manage projects cost-effectively and ensure on-time project delivery.
