Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks ***** Discuss the constructional details of single-phase transformer and hence obtain the expression for induced e. m. f. of transformer. (a) Draw the equivalent circuit of a transformer and show how the constants of primary and secondary windings may be combined to give a simplified equivalent circuit with the values of constants given in terms of secondary winding. In a 25 kVA, 2000/200 V transformer the iron and copper losses are 350 and 400 W respectively. Calculate the efficiency on upf at (i) full load and (ii) half load. (iii) Determine the load for maximum efficiency and the copper loss in this case. Explain the O.C. and S.C. tests on the transformer and hence explain the evaluation of equivalent circuit from it. Explain the operation of autotransformer with neat diagram. What are the disadvantages of current & voltage harmonics in transformers? Explain how these harmonics can be eliminated. Two single phase furnaces are supplied at 250 V from a 6.6 kV, 3-f system through a pair of Scott connected transformer, if the load on the main transformer is 85 kW at 0.9 pf lagging and that on the teaser transformer is 69 kW at o.8 pf lagging. Find the values of line currents on the three phase side. Neglect the losses. Explain clearly the principle of operation of an induction motor. The frequency of stator EMF is 50 Hz for an 8-pole induction motor. If the rotor frequency is 2.5 Hz, calculate the slip and the actual speed of rotor. Explain step by step procedure of an approximate equivalent circuit of 3 phase induction motor to include the equivalent load resistance. A three-phase, 50 Hz induction motor has four poles and runs at a speed of 1440 rpm when the total torque developed by the rotor is 70 N-m. Calculate (I) the total input to the rotor (in kW) (ii) the rotor I2R loss in watts. Explain in detail about the working of rotor rheostat starter with a suitable diagram. Explain the tests to be carried out to draw circle diagram of an induction motor. Explain briefly different methods how speed control of induction motor is achieved. A certain 3 6-pole, 50 Hz induction motor when fully-loaded, runs with a slip of 3%, find the value of resistance necessary in series per phase of the rotor to reduce the speed by 10%, assume that the resistance per phase is 0.2 . *****
