IN THE NEWS
Were not lovin it BURGER giant McDonalds brought Tarporley town centre to a standstill last month in order to film a new advert. Filming took place over three days, with the town transformed into a New York street and the Wild West. A number of businesses agreed to change their shop fronts for the advert but a number of shop owners were unhappy that they lost trade during the shoot. Several claimed that trade ground to a halt, along with the traffic. But Tarporley Parish Council said the traffic issues were not too bad and that McDonalds was making donations to local charities. Funds for cricket club OAKMERE Cricket Club has been given 48,236 of Olympic legacy funding from Sport England. The money will be used to improve the changing rooms as well as a new baby changing space and umpires rooms. Not so APPROVAL has not yet been granted for the new homes on Nantwich Road, Tarporley, contrary to last months Tarporley Talk. The decision has actually gone to appeal. Apologies for the confusion

Neighbourhood Plan The Parish Council is pleased that the process of writing a Neighbourhood Plan for Tarporley has started and that it has been awarded Front Runner status, with a grant of 20,000, by central government. A Neighbourhood Plan is a new way of helping local communities, such as Tarporley, to influence the planning of the area in which we live and work. The process was launched at a meeting on 19th March at the community centre to which 120 people attended. We are really pleased that over 30 residents signed up to be involved. For more information, email neighbourhoodplan@tarporley.org.uk Waste Reduction Cheshire West and Chester and Cheshire East Councils currently have around 50 Waste Reduction Volunteers covering both borough areas and are keen to increase these numbers. Volunteers are recruited and trained in initiatives such as Home Composting and Love Food Hate Waste so that they can then go out into their local communities to give talks or attend events and encourage residents to home compost and reduce the amount of food they throw away. As part of the recruitment drive there is a training day on Saturday 19th May at Delamere Forest Education Centre. For further information or to book a place, contact Catherine Evans, Waste Awareness Officer, on 01244 973167 or e-mail: catherine.evans@cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk New Non-Emergency Number 101 Concern has been expressed by residents about the aggressive stance that some of the people calling door to door selling cleaning products, such as dusters, have adopted. We recommend that in such situations you call the police on Tel 101, as one parish councillor did recently. This number is the new nonemergency number for the police, which is always staffed. Because the councillor called it soon after the incident, the officers were able to find the door to door salesperson still in the village and spoke to him about his behaviour. 10 To advertise call 01244 350398 This 101 new non-emergency number, which is part of a national programme, provides the public with a memorable number to report crime and other concerns that do not require an emergency response such as: if their car has been stolen; if their property has been damaged or vandalised; * where they suspect drug use or dealing; if they want to report a minor traffic collision; if they want to provide information about crime; School Holidays The Parish Council has been invited to comment on the Councils, CWaCs, proposal for standardising the school year, which is out for public consultation until 28th May 2012. Comments can be made via CWaCs web site (put standardised school term in their search engine), by emailing schoolplanningandpolicy@ cheshirewestandchester.gov. uk or phoning 0300 123 7032. The proposals include, amongst others:* October half term always being the last full week in October * February half term always being the third full week in February * Easter holidays being renamed the Spring Break, and always being the first two full weeks in April * Easter being observed via the bank holidays for Good Friday and Easter Monday. * Whitsun half term holiday being only one week

SENIORS

For boys & girls 11-16

Enriching young lives with a broader, more dynamic approach to education.

Naturally, we all want our children to grow up to be fulfilled and successful - and an enjoyable education which explores their potential and enriches their lives gives them a great chance of achieving exactly that.
Last year, The Kings School introduced a dynamic new curriculum which offers boys and girls aged 11-16 a range of more challenging courses, including international GCSEs and additional options such as Astronomy, Italian and Russian. The aim is to broaden their horizons, increase confidence and develop independent study qualities highly valued by the top universities. All this comes on top of Kings well established reputation for academic, artistic and sporting excellence, and an array of facilities, clubs and societies which enable young people to pursue their individual interests in a stimulating environment. It all adds up to make Kings an attractive and popular choice, for parents and pupils alike.

The Royal Oak: highly recommended

Hayley Ryder, from Tarporley Talk, visited the Royal Oak, Kelsall As the summer months are upon us, there is nothing nicer than dining out at a relaxed village pub. Having been taken over in 2011, the pub has recently celebrated its first birthday and is going from strength to strength. I regularly dine out and a varied and exciting menu is a must for me. The menu offered classics such a Posh fish and chips English roast lamb Angus burgers to the more exotic like Malayan spiced chicken Goan chicken curry Game, chestnut and smoked bacon pie Also on the menu were some slightly unusual salads, such as Asian spiced chicken and Severn and Wye poached salmon. For starters I opted for the Crispy salmon and haddock fishcakes, served with a dressed salad, curried mayonnaise and lemon. My colleague, Lynne, always one to try new things ordered the Spiced potted Gloucester old spot pork with a sticky apple and cracker-ling salad. Presentation Our starters were presented beautifully, so much so I thought best to share it with our readers, see image. All fresh and homemade with plenty of flavours. Lynnes was served with crunchy toast, a unusual pork and apple salad and a flavoursome spiced potted pork. Not your usual starter, which is what I found most appealing. Sampling new foods and flavours is part of the experience of dining out. After having an adequate break between courses, topping up our drinks, our mains were served. Again, fantastically presented! I had chosen the Confit belly of free range rose farm pork, wrapped in air dried ham with creamy mash, savoy cabbage and carrot vinaigrette. This was absolutely delicious, pork was cooked to perfection and the vegetables all complimented it perfectly. My colleague picked the Malayan spiced chicken, with sweet potato which came with a bit of kick, some unique flavours and plenty of taste. Blissful With such generous portion sizes we were in two minds whether to have a dessert, but with several homemade deserts to pick from, like Citrus crme Brulee and your classics like home made apple pie, ice creams and banoffee puddings (with a twist) we had to try one. It certainly was one of the nicest puddings I have had for a long time. The service was fantastic, the food out of this world and an environment that left you feeling relaxed and at ease to spend those blissful summer days with good company. I would certainly recommend this to anyone, there is food for all tastes and hand selected wines for those romantic evenings. The Royal Oak, is offering all Tarporley Talk readers a voucher for a buy one main get one free deal. So there really is no excuse not to give this place a try, I will guarantee you will be back! Thank you John and Eric for your invite, we shall be joining you again soon to sample more of your delicious menu!

What does the budget m

IN MARCH the Chancellor delivered his third budget speech, the contents of which were so well rehearsed by politicians, pundits and papers that the real thing threatened to be an anticlimax. Was there anything left that he could surprise us with, especially as he had such little fiscal room for manoeuvre!
The answer was both yes and no. After all the rumours about 50%, 45% or even 47% income tax, Mr Osborne decided to change to 45% from April 2013, and his 2013/14 increase in the personal allowance allowed him to start phasing out the age allowance an unexpected revenue raising ploy, and one which certainly caused the most heated of debates. The stamp duty land tax increase for homes valued at 2 million or more was well telegraphed, and accompanied by some unexpectedly severe antiavoidance provisions. The impact of the child benefit removal for higher earners was softened by increasing the threshold and phasing it in, and Businesses should be pleased with the predicted reduction in corporation tax rates and the surprise uplift in the enterprise management incentive (EMI) limit.

Victorian mill set to reopen

A NINETEENTH century watermill will reopen its doors to the public after United Utilities gifted the historic building to a team of hard-working volunteers. The water company has officially handed over the keys to Bunbury Watermill Trust. The Grade II listed building in Mill Lane is believed to date back to 1844 when it was built to replace a previous mill that was destroyed by fire. The site has been used for corn milling since 1290 and the mill once supplied Chester with flour, delivered to bakeries in the city by horse and cart. It is one of the few remaining watermills in the region capable of grinding wheat to food standard flour. It later manufactured animal feedstuff until 1960 when it was destroyed by a flood. After being close to demolition in 1966, it was restored to working order by North West Water (now United Utilities) in 1977. It operated as a museum and educational facility with fully working machinery until 2010 when it was closed as a cost-saving measure. A buyer was sought to take on the mill as a going concern but talks continued to take place between United Utilities and the Bunbury Watermill Trust and these negotiations led to an agreement to transfer ownership. In the meantime, volunteers have continued to tend to the mills grounds and keep the equipment in working order. Chris Matthews, Head of Sustainability at United Utilities, said: Were delighted that the legacy of the historic watermill will live on in Bunbury. We were always keen for the watermill to be preserved and its a great honour to pass on the ownership of the mill to the very safe hands of the Bunbury Watermill Trust. Ernest Croley, Chairman of Bunbury Watermill Trust, said: This is fantastic news and an extremely generous act by United Utilities. We believe the mill has important historic and educational value for both the immediate local community and the wider region. We will now be able to deliver lessons in the dedicated museum and classroom on the history of mills and breadmaking as well as the rich community of flowers and animals that are to be found in the grounds. What better way for children to learn than in a fully operational watermill?

with Angela Bartlett
Q. I do a lot of exercise and need to find a mascara that wont smudge or run, but I have very sensitive eyes and I am really struggling to find one that is suitable. Can you suggest anything? A. Finding a mascara that doesnt smudge or run, is truly waterproof and wont damage your lashes is a challenge for lots of women. Finding one that is also kind to sensitive eyes is almost impossible! The problem is that during wear, small amounts of mascara can flake or dissolve off the lashes and enter the eye causing irritation. Coupled with the fact that waterproof mascaras generally have to be removed with an eye makeup remover, which can also cause sensitivity, can all add up to a whole lot of trouble for some wearers of mascara. We have sourced, and now stock, a new type of mascara that forms a tube around the eyelashes. It is suitable for even the most sensitive of eyes, is waterproof and dissolves off easily at the end of the day with warm water. We are so confident in its abilities that we are providing free application to try before you buy. For further tips on how to look after sensitive eyes visit the newsletter page of our website www.angelabartlett.co.uk Q. In my skin care product is an ingredient called palmitoyl pentapeptide-3. What is it and is it dangerous? A. It is far from being dangerous; it has a high safety record and is a high performance, skin rejuvenating ingredient used in results focused anti-ageing products. It is a synthetic protein which acts as a cellular messenger to stimulate collagen production in the skin. Olgiopentapeptide works in a similar manner as do Retinol and Vitamin C and all help to restructure the cellular matrix to promote healthy, vibrant skin. Palmitoyl pentapeptide-3 is a good anti-ageing option for anyone sensitive to retinoids and alpha-hydroxy acids as there is very little risk of skin irritation.

A grand day out at Cheshire Races

faBUlOUS times are ahead for Cheshire races (formerly Tarporley races) as we start a new and exciting era in our Horse racing history. Cheshire races are this year being held at the wonderful Tabley House. Alpraham has for many years been the home of the Cheshire point 2 point, but times change and the point 2 Point team has had to make the incredibly tough decision to move the event from Alphraham to Tabley House. Tabley House offers us the greatest of opportunities to ensure a wonderful day out for all our well loved and much appreciated Cheshire followers, who will this year have the added bonus of a great viewing course where Car Park Passes can get you right up close with the action as well as (we hope) many more Horses racing than we have seen in previous years. For the Horses, Tabley offers a very well maintained racetrack with exceptional ground to help ensure maximum safety helping to bring all runners home without the worry of injury. This year we would like to extend our invitation to anyone who has never been to an amateur horseracing event. It offers a thrill very different to other forms of horse racing. First of all you get much closer to the action, with Point-2-Pointing you can feel the ground vibrate as the runners gallop past, see the fences give a little as the horse jumps over them. Most importantly, all the people involved are normal people with everyday jobs; the jockeys in the races will go to work on Monday just as you or I would, and the horses dont cost a fortune and they are trained by families, using fields and grass verges in the local area to get them fit to race. The horses you will see at the Cheshire Races will be someones pride and joy. Come along and see for yourself, maybe even try your luck! For those of you who want a little more to a day out than just the horses, we have stands and stalls galore: food, bars, country clothing, silent auction, hound pups to play with, pony racing and much much more, all set within the stunning surroundings of Tabley Park with the beautiful Tabley house creating the backdrop to this wonderful day. Come along, were sure youll see why we love it and want you to share it with you. For more information about where we are, what youll see and even what to wear please visit the website www. cheshireraces.com or see our Facebook page Tabley House, Knutsford, Cheshire, WA16 0HB.

TarPOrlEY HIGH SCHOOl & S

You may have seen some of the Year 10 students gracing your television screens recently as part of their work for the BBC School Report project. After a visit to Media City UK in Salford to learn all about making TV news back in February, the BBC team were so impressed that they were one of three schools across the whole of the North West to be invited back for the official BBC School Report news day on 15th March. Alongside this, Miss Hanks received an exciting phone call from a North West Tonight producer to say that they wanted to develop one of the Tarporley students pieces for their evening programme. Cue HD cameras, BBC producers and a group of TV-ready students prepared to plan and film a news item with an incredibly tight schedule. Students worked determinedly against the clock to put together a piece on body image, filmed on location at Tarporley High School. Even down to the music in the background, students scripted and planned shots so they could share with the region their passion for shunning airbrushed images in order to celebrate being individuals. Their piece was shown at 6.30pm on BBC 1. On 15th March students put all their hard work into practice and produced the news for real on the official BBC School Report day. Back at school, some students took over the library in order to film and edit topical pieces to camera. Meanwhile over at Media CityUK, Lizzie Grantham and Luke Jeeves had a very early start as they were live on the sofa in the North West Tonight studio with presenter Roger Johnson and two studio guests, CBeebies presenter Cerrie Burnell and plus

Students show plenty of enterprise The schools young enterprise company JusT attended the Cheshire West and Chester presentation and awards evening at the Bank of America in Chester. The students had to set up their trade stand for it to be judged, they were then interviewed by three corporate judges about their company and finally came the scary part presenting to over 150 people. Although the school did not walk away with any awards, students really feel that the whole process has been fantastic. Students will also be at the Tarporley Carnival this summer!

size model Jenna Herlingshaw. The students held their own during live television and conducted their interviews like professionals! Later in the same programme, the schools Olympic torch bearer sixth former Alex Staniforth was also under the spotlight on the sofa and spoke passionately about the charity work that has led to his selection. Elsewhere on site, James Gibbon delivered live radio bulletins every hour from the BBC Sport radio booth and was later interviewed on Newsround later that day whilst Daniel Hallam and Matt Jeffreys secured an interview with Robbie Savage! The remaining students at Media City also worked hard in the background to ensure everything ran smoothly for the live broadcasts.

Tarporley firefighters say thanks

FIREFIGHTERS, Fire Cadets and helpers have thanked the people of Tarporley for their generosity following their recent successful charity car wash. Drivers turned out in force to support The Fire Fighters Charity while Firefighters, Fire Cadets and teams of helpers with their buckets and sponges raised money for this worthy cause as well as handing out road safety advice at Tarporley community fire station. Deputy Chief Fire Officer Mark Cashin said: It is testament to the support we have from the public when events such as this show how generous people can be as a magnificent total of over 340 was raised on the day from local residents. It costs over 9 million every year to keep The Fire Fighters Charity running, and with no government funding, it is completely reliant on donations from the general public and fire community. School confirms academy plans TARPORLEY High School is to press ahead with plans to become an academy. In a statement on the schools website, head teacher Sarah Lee confirmed that The governing body confirmed that the governing body is convinced that as an academy, the school will be best placed to fulfil this vision and to respond to future opportunities and challenges. Wine talk
with Gill nicol, from enigma Wine
When we think of Rioja it is commonly thought of as a full bodied red wine and mostly the Rioja region does produce mainly reds (roughly 85%) however its also responsible for the production of white and ros wines. For this reason a Rioja themed wine tasting evening is a great way of introducing people to the lesser known styles of wine from this traditional Spanish wine region. Whilst the most dominant red grape variety used in red Rioja is the Tempranillo grape, the ros are usually made with the lighter red grape Garnacha and the whites of this region are made mostly with the aromatic Viura grape. Ive chosen a white, ros and red to recommend this t. 01244 370 898 month to introduce some of these less common styles of Rioja. To begin with Id like e. recommend the white Luis Canas Rioja Blanco Joven 2010. to info@enigmawine.co.uk This is an unoaked blend of 90% Viura and 10% Malvasia. Traditionally white Rioja w. www.enigmawine.co.uk tended to be fermented and aged in oak barrels but increasingly the trend is towards fresher, fruitier styles of whites that show the purity of fruit of the Viura grape. This is an excellent example which has intense citrus fruit on the nose followed by ripe melon and pineapple on the palate, with excellent length. Bought from Chester Beer and Wine in hoole for 7.75. The rose Id like to recommend is the Finca Manzanos Rioja Rosado 2010 from M&S at 5.24 a bottle. This has a beautiful pale onion skin pink colour and smells of fresh strawberries and raspberries which are also found on the palate. This is a lovely fresh style of ros that is perfect for a summers evening and a great introduction to ros Rioja. Finally Id like to recommend a more youthful, lighter style of red Rioja which I found in Costco (5.89 the last time I bought it). The Vega Piedra Rioja 2009 is a semi-Crianza, which means its had a little bit of oak aging but not enough to fully qualify for Crianza status, hence the semi-Crianza!. This has soft red fruits on the nose with hints of vanilla from its ageing in oak and on the palate it is smooth, well rounded with soft tannins and hints of dried fruit and coconut. Perfect with BBQs or simply to enjoy on its own.

MAy BLOOMS
GaRdeninG By Janet HeatH
May is probably my favourite month as the trees and shrubs are clothed in fresh new foliage and there are some stunning flowers out its a month of pinks and white with blossom on the crab apple trees and hawthorns. Paeonies flower in May with sumptuous blooms in shades of pink and red. Do not plant too deeply, their new shoots should be just below the soil surface. Mulch them in winter with a layer of compost to protect them from frost. Although they are supposed to resent moving, they can be moved if you do it carefully in autumn. Shrubs such as Deutzia, exochorda x macrantha The Bride, Spirea Bridal Wreath all have pale pink or white flowers. If you want scent in the garden, Daphnes and Viburnum carlessii and burkwoodii varieties with pom poms of scented blooms will give you a waft of perfume as you pass by. Place near paths or seating areas to enjoy them as there is little point in putting them at the back of a border where the perfume will be wasted! Rhododendrons and Azaleas also flower in May. Both do better in sheltered spots in a slightly acid free draining soil which does not

dry out so avoid heavy clay and full sun. The deciduous Azaleas especially the yellow varieties have perfumed flowers so seek them out if you have the right soil and situation. harden off Fuschias, Dahlias and large leaved Cannas gradually for planting out when it is no longer frosty. Cannas and Dahlias do well in containers planted up with lower growing bedding plants like trailing lobelia and petunias. In the vegetable plot earth up the potatoes that you planted in March for an early crop in June. Sow seeds of purple sprouting broccoli, leeks, carrots, french beans and salads. Plant out your tomato plants, courgettes and pumpkins but protect with fleece netting if frosts are forecast. I sow seeds of runner beans indoors in pots so that they avoid being eaten by slugs as soon as they show their heads above the soil. Slugs cant climb more than 30cms so I plant them out when they are more than that in height!

Peckforton and Beeston WI After a short business meeting our April meeting continued with a very entertaining talk by Doug Haynes entitled The Impact of the Gentry on our historic County when we learnt that most of the landed gentry in the county descended from 8 barons who owned the land, controlled the Cheshire people and represented them in Parliament. The talk was illustrated with a 1610 map by John Speed and also slides collected by Doug over the years showing the various family trees and the different styles of properties on the various estates in our immediate area, namely those of the Tollemaches, Cholmondeleys, Wilbrahams, Grosvenors, Delves Broughtons, Crewes and the Barbours. Resolutions will be discussed at our next meeting on 2nd May, followed by a talk by David Tideswell on Garden Birds in Spring and Summer. Visitors are always made very welcome we look forward to seeing you at Peckforton Village Rooms at 7.30pm. Did you spot him? He is on the top of the Tattenhall Jubilee info on page 76
