Delphos, Ohio addition for its frozen foods. By 1999, the company served 4,000 grocers in six states. Over its lifetime, the company began distributing national brand and proprietary products such as Yoplait, Hellmanns, Stouffers and Nestles. It also had sales offices in locations around the Midwest from Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland to Indianapolis, Detroit and three other cities. In the late 1990s, Chef Solutions, Inc. made I&K a division and at one point, the production and distribution were separated and owned by different companies based far outside of Americas Friendliest City. In 2007, a group of investors led by Ramex, Inc., purchased the company and its sales offices. It announced that year that Countryside Foods, LLC, had taken over but, like Chef Solutions, kept Illig and Klausings presence in the name. By 2008, the company distributed more than 4,500 SKUs and up to 50,000 cases each day with even more during peak season. The company had a product line that included refrigerated dairy, deli, bakery, meat and grocery items sold to some 4,200 customers from an 84,000-square-foot distribution center with two miles of conveyors.

DELPHOS In 2006, Cintas Corporation of Cincinnati purchased Van Dyne Crotty, which maintained a local facility. Not long after the acquisition, the Delphos location was closed. For several years since, the building and the fencing surrounding it have fallen victim to wear and tear. Though part of the heavily-rusted fence is caving in and there is rust on the building, as well as some brick and paint damage, a Cintas representative says the buildings condition is a matter of opinion. Im not the real estate administrator for the company. Im the spokesperson but I know we keep up our vacant properties. We maintain them, said representative Heather Maley. When asked to elaborate on the extent of what it means to maintain such properties, she replied we check on them periodically. We hire vendors and contractors to maintain them to make any necessary repairs. We broke the Talibans momentum. Weve built strong Afghan security forces. We devastated al-Qaidas leadership, taking out over 20 of their top 30 leaders, he said. But the violence that erupted about 90 minutes after his departure was a stark reminder of the difficult task still ahead for Afghan troops as they work to secure their country after U.S. and other foreign troops end their combat mission following nearly a decade at war. The deal signed with Karzai does not commit the United States to any specific troop presence or spending. But it does allow the U.S. to potentially keep troops in Afghanistan through 2024 for two specific purposes: continued training of Afghan forces and targeted operations against al-Qaida. The United States also promises to seek money from Congress every year to support Afghanistan. The attack began with a suicide car bomb near the gate of the privately guarded compound, which sits off Jalalabad road one of the main thoroughfares out of the city, Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi said. Kabul Deputy Police Chief Daoud Amin said those killed in the blast included four people in a station wagon that was driving past the area, a passer-by and a Nepalese security guard. He didnt have the identity of the seventh person killed. The Interior Ministry said 17 other people were wounded, many Afghan children on their way to school.

What experience and history teach is this: that people and governments have never learned anything from history. Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (HAY-guhl), German philosopher (1770-1831)
WASHINGTON (AP) U.S. manufacturing grew last month at the fastest pace in 10 months, suggesting that the economy is healthier than recent data had indicated. New orders, production and a measure of hiring all rose. The April survey from the Institute for Supply Management was a hopeful sign ahead of Fridays monthly jobs report and helped the Dow Jones industrial average end the day at its highest level in more than four years. The trade group of purchasing managers said Tuesday that its index of manufacturing activity reached 54.8 in April, the highest since June. Readings above 50 indicate expansion. The sharp increase surprised analysts, who had predicted a decline after several regional reports showed manufacturing growth weakened last month. The gain led investors to shift money out of bonds and into stocks. The Dow Jones industrial added 66 points to 13,279, its best close since Dec. 28, 2007. Broader indexes also surged. The ISM manufacturing index is closely watched in part because its the first major economic report for each month. Aprils big gain followed a series of weaker reports in recent weeks that showed hiring slowed, applications for unemployment benefits rose and factory output dropped. This survey will ease concerns that the softer tone of the incoming news in recent months marked the start of a renewed slowdown in growth, Paul Dales, an economist at Capital Economics, said in a note to clients. We think the latest recovery is made of sterner stuff, although we doubt it will set the world alight.
WASHINGTON Mitt Romneys boast that he closed a $3 billion budget gap as Massachusetts governor without raising taxes is a cornerstone of his White House campaign, a way to highlight his pitch for lower taxes and leaner government in a race where federal budget deficits and the slumping economy are hot issues. What he rarely mentions is how he did it. The presumptive Republican nominee and Democratic state lawmakers raised hundreds of millions of dollars for cash-strapped state coffers by approving new and higher fees on everything from marriage licenses to real estate transactions to gun licenses. The dozens of fee increases were a way for Romney, a former venture capitalist, to boost state revenues and ease the budget squeeze while technically sticking to his pledge not to raise taxes. It was a grab bag of fee increases across the board to close the budget deficit, said By ANNE GEARAN and ROBERT BURNS AP National Security Writers
There are varying estimates on the size of fee increases. Romney and the Democratic-run Legislature raised about $350 million annually in additional fees during Romneys first two fiscal years as governor, said Widmer. Romney has said the fee increases were about $240 million in fiscal 2004. A National Conference of State Legislatures study put the figure even higher, saying Massachusetts in 2003 imposed more than $501.5 million in fee hikes, more than any other state. New York, with a far larger budget, was a distant second with $367 million. Among the fee increases the study found: Marriage licenses went from $4 to $50, driving permits from $15 to $30, deed-recording fees from $25 to $100 and mortgagerecording fees from $36 to $158. Romney wanted to make blind people pay a new $10 fee for a state certificate of blindness and $15 for a photo identification card, but the Legislature scrapped those proposals. Qaida, and to keep an eye on neighboring Iran. Obamas emphasis on a long-term U.S. commitment to Afghanistan reflects a lingering worry about the threat of a Taliban resurgence after 2014, when U.S. and NATO combat forces are scheduled to leave. The Taliban claimed responsibility for attacks that rocked Kabul a few hours later. Officials and witnesses said a suicide car bomber and Taliban militants disguised in burqas attacked a compound housing hundreds of foreigners in the Afghan capital, killing seven. With the agreement signed Tuesday, the U.S. also has in mind the strategic significance of preserving a military partnership on Irans eastern frontier, even if it does not include permanent U.S. bases. Even after the U.S. combat mission is concluded in 2014, it is likely that thousands of U.S. troops will remain for some years to conduct counterterrorism strikes and otherwise train and advise Afghan forces, and help the Afghans collect and exploit intelligence on insurgents and other military targets.
WASHINGTON In President Barack Obamas twin narratives, the United States is both leaving Afghanistan and staying there. The different messages are meant for different audiences, one at home and one away. As Obamas brief, symbolic visit to Afghanistan today made clear, the more important audience is American voters fed up with a war that will be in its 12th year on Election Day this fall. The president flew in secret to sign a long-awaited security compact with Afghanistan. It was after midnight in Kabul when the signing took place, and 4 a.m. there when Obama addressed Americans in a specially arranged 7:30 p.m. EDT speech on network television. By the time most Afghans woke up, Obama was gone. My fellow Americans, Obama said from Bagram Air Field, we have traveled through more than a decade

WASHINGTON The squabbling between political campaigns and the harrumphing of pundits were put in proper perspective at, of all places, the White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) dinner the annual Prom on the Potomac where 2,000 or so media members and movie stars gather to honor the president and admire one another. It is customary at this exclusive congregation for media organizations to compete for the celebrity get. Thus, this year, all were abuzz over the stars, including among the many, George Clooney, Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn, Steven Spielberg and, of course, Kim Kardashian, without whom no shallow occasion would be complete and finally, Lindsay Lohan. Then there was Table 46, one of The Washington Posts tables, to which I was fortuitously assigned. We were the un-celebrities writers, editors, Undersecretary of State Bob Hormats, and a military officer who introduced himself as Bill. He was obviously important. His dress uniform was festooned with medals and ribbons lots of them. And he had that bearing we recognize in military elites that betrays another kind of space, a private zone where intelligence and readiness keep each other quiet company. Bill ... who did he say? Turns out this humble, polite man was Adm. William McRaven, leader of the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) that oversaw the raid to kill Osama bin Laden. In a recounting of the eight-month lead-up to the
Adm. McRaven and Karen Tumulty raid, Time magazine features clearly deserves enormous McRaven as part of President credit for the execution of the Obamas highly secret, and bin Laden hit. At one point during the WHCA dinner, I thought the president was going to recognize our man, Bill. Obama began his speech by acknowledging that a year ago, the U.S. delivered justice to a deserving person. I glanced at McRaven thinking, aha, hes about to have his well-deserved moment. Instead, the huge screens in the room flashed the face of Donald Trump. It was a setup for a joke. I asked McRaven what its like to wake up every day and know that youre the one who brought down bin Laden. Does he open his eyes and think, wow, I did that? No, he smiles and shakes his head. Its our job. Its what we do. No one at the dinner posed for a picture with McRaven, except (at my insistence) his hostess for the evening, Washington Post reporter Karen Tumulty. A fifth-grade classmate of McRavens, Tumulty convinced him to attend the dinner. As the crowd followed Kardashian down the hall and others grabbed Clooney for one more photo, McRaven slipped out of the room and down a private hallway into the night. Just like a year ago after Abbottabad unnoticed, unrecognized, uncelebrated. Ignoring the best while celebrating the least its what we do.

Jared Rex went 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and a run, adding a walk and a sacrifice fly. Bubba Shimp was 1-for2 with two runs and a walk. Bryce Ringwald was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. NOTES: Indians RHP Josh Tomlin (1-2, 5.48 ERA) is scheduled to pitch todays game against Philip Humber (1-1, 4.66 ERA). Humber threw a perfect game on April 21 against Seattle and struggled in a 10-3 loss against Boston last week. ORIOLES 7, YANKEES 1 NEW YORK Buck Showalter got his 1,000th victory as a majorleague manager, Brian Matusz ended his 11-month losing streak and the Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees 7-1 Tuesday night. Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy homered off struggling Phil Hughes (1-4), giving the Orioles their first win in five tries against the Yankees this year. Showalter, whose first win came 20 years ago across the street at old Yankee Stadium when New Yorks Scott Sanderson beat Boston ace Roger Clemens, improved to 1,000958 in 14 seasons with the Yankees, Arizona, Texas and Baltimore. He joined Dusty Baker, Bruce Bochy, Davey Johnson, Jim Leyland, Mike Scioscia and Bobby Valentine among active managers in the 1,000-win club. Matusz (1-3) allowed six hits in 6 1/3 innings to win for the first time since beating Oakland last June 6. He had been 0-12 with a 10.47 ERA in 14 starts since, the longest active losing streak in the majors and one short of the Orioles record set by Mike Boddicker from 1987-88. RAYS 3, MARINERS 1 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Matt Joyce had two of Tampa Bays three hits, a solo homer and an RBI triple, to help the surging Rays beat Seattle for their ninth victory in 10 games. Tampa Bay rookie Matt Moore (1-1) scattered seven hits over five innings to get the win, which kept the first-place Rays atop the AL East standings. Michael Saunders hit a solo homer and Jesus Montero went 4-for-4 for Seattle but the Mariners were 0-for5 with runners in scoring position. They have lost four straight following a 4-game winning streak. Joyce tripled off starter Hector Noesi (1-3) and scored on Luke Scotts sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead in the first. Joyces team-leading sixth homer made it 3-1 in the third. Burke Badenhop and Joel Peralta combined for three scoreless innings out of Tampa Bays bullpen. Fernando Rodney struck out the side in the ninth to earn his eighth save in eight opportunities. The Rays played without third baseman Evan Longoria, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list before the game with a partially torn left hamstring. The 3-time All-Star is expected to be sidelined 4-8 weeks. BLUE JAYS 8, RANGERS 7 TORONTO Brett Lawrie homered leading off the ninth inning to give Toronto a comeback win over Texas. Francisco Cordero blew a save
opportunity in the top of the ninth but Lawrie won it in the bottom half against Mike Adams (0-1) with a shot that bounced off the top of the wall in left-center, his third. It was the second Blue Jays homer of the game to bounce off the wall and out: Kelly Johnsons 3-run shot in the third did the same. Jose Bautista also connected for Toronto, which rallied from 5-0 down to beat the team with the best record in baseball. Cordero (1-1) allowed Michael Youngs tying single in the ninth. Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton (back) sat out for the second straight game and remains day-to-day. TIGERS 9, ROYALS 3 DETROIT Austin Jackson had four hits and Rick Porcello pitched eight strong innings to lead Detroit past Kansas City. The Tigers scored five runs in the first and won for only the third time in 11 games. Porcello (2-2) took advantage of the offensive support to snap out of his slump, allowing three runs and seven hits. In his previous two starts, the right-hander was 0-2 with a 15.26 ERA. Luke Hochevar (2-2) yielded nine runs on 12 hits and three walks in four innings. The teams were washed out Monday night, Kansas Citys second rainout in three days. The Royals have lost two straight following a 3-game winning streak that came on the heels of a 12-game skid. ATHLETICS 5, RED SOX 3 BOSTON Jarrod Parker scattered four hits over 6 2/3 innings for his first major league win and Oakland stopped a 3-game skid by beating Boston. Jemile Weeks ended on 0-for-12 slump with a leadoff single and finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs for the As. Oakland scored the first five runs to back Parker (1-0), who made his third career start on a frigid night at Fenway Park. Mike Aviles hit a 2-run single in the ninth before Jordan Norberto got two outs for his first major-league save. Red Sox starter Felix Doubront (1-1) gave up five runs and six hits in four innings. ANGELS 4, TWINS 0 ANAHEIM, Calif. Jerome Williams pitched a 3-hitter for his second major-league shutout and Torii Hunter homered for the fourth time in five games to lead Los Angeles over struggling Minnesota. Howie Kendrick also went deep against Francisco Liriano (0-4) but Albert Pujols was 0-for-4 with a runscoring groundout. The 3-time NL MVP has gone a career-worst 31 games and 125 at-bats since his last home run on Sept. 22, 2011, with St. Louis. Williams (2-1) threw 109 pitches, striking out six and retiring 18 of his last 19 batters to finish in an economical 2 hours, 10 minutes. It was his third complete game in 81 career starts. His other shutout was on June 27, 2003, with the Giants, a 7-hitter against Oakland in his sixth big-league start. The 30-year-old right-hander from Honolulu faced only one batter more than the minimum before walking Denard Span with two outs in the ninth. The Twins lhave ost eight out of nine and have a major league-worst 6-17 record.
before he was greeted by the rest of the team. Giroux has emerged as the leader of the team and whatever he was telling the goalie, Bryzgalov seemed to agree with, mostly nodding his head. Bryz was phenomenal tonight but we have to do a better job in front of him, Flyer coach Peter Laviolette said. We were not skating the way we needed to be but I dont think it was because of the fact that we were relying on him to win a game for us. The Flyers entered with an NHL postseason-high 34 goals but failed to generate much offense after the first 10 minutes. Read scored from a tough angle outside the circle to beat Brodeur for the fast 1-0 lead. But it didnt hold up. Not even Giroux and Danny Briere could spark the Flyers. Each tick of the clock in the second period was like watching a no-hitter to see if the Flyers would finally put the puck on Brodeur. With 1:27 left in the period, the Flyers broke through for a shot and they only took one more. Brodeur had 19 saves.
him to skip a side session or his next start. Chacin (0-3) gave up a career-worst seven earned runs. After allowing Gordons homer and Andre Eithers 3-run shot in the first, he gave up an RBI double and a 2-run homer to A.J. Ellis and left trailing 7-0 after 4 2-3 innings. Lillys only mistake was a fat fastball that Gonzalez sent into the right-field seats for a two-run homer, his fifth, in the sixth inning that made it 7-2. The Rockies tagged Josh Lindblom for three runs on four hits in the seventh and Todd Helton made it 7-6 with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
1 DIAMONDBACKS 5, NATIONALS WASHINGTON Trevor Cahill took a 4-hit shutout into the eighth inning and the Arizona beat Washington to stretch the Nationals losing streak to five games. Teenager Bryce Harper went 0-for3 in his home debut for the Nationals. Harper, the No. 1 pick in the 2010 draft, is 2-for-9 since being recalled from the minors on Saturday. Cahill (2-2) allowed one run and six hits in 7 1/3 innings. Justin Upton had two hits and two RBIs and John McDonald and Miguel Montero each had two hits and an RBI for the Diamondbacks. Jordan Zimmermann (1-2) gave up four runs, three earned, in 6 1/3
Ovechkin playing less and less but Capitals win ARLINGTON, Va. Alex Ovechkins ice time keeps shrinking in the playoffs, all the way down to a career-low 13 1/2 minutes in Game 2 of the Washington Capitals Eastern Conference semifinal against the New York Rangers. Seems to be working so far. With the teams tied at a game apiece and shifting to Washington for Game 3 today, followed by Game 4 on Saturday, a major topic of conversation is how little 2-time NHL MVP Ovechkin is playing. Despite the reduced action, Washingtons captain and leading scorer did manage to net the winning goal on a power play in Game 2. No one on the Capitals has scored more goals this postseason than Ovechkins three. And he leads the team with six points, too. But coach Dale Hunter is hiding Ovechkin on the bench for long stretches at a time, especially when the Capitals are trying to protect a lead. During the regular season, the player known as Alex the Great topped Washingtons forwards by averaging 19 minutes, 48 seconds of total ice time, 16:08 of evenstrength ice time. In the playoffs, Ovechkin ranks only third and his numbers are down to 19:08 and 15:23. In Monday nights 3-2 victory at New York, Ovechkins 10:36 of even-strength time ranked only eighth among Washingtons 12 forwards and was nearly 6 full minutes less than Jay Beagle, for example. Whether Ovechkins diminished role is a result of an inability or unwillingness to play the sort of safe, possession-focused, defensive-minded hockey that Hunter seeks or a result of something else its tough to argue with the results. After all, the seventh-seeded Capitals got past the secondseeded and reigning Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins in a tightas-can-be, each-game-decided-by1-goal series. And now Hunters Capitals are even with the top-seeded Rangers. Predators suspend Radulov, Kostitsyn for Game 3 NASHVILLE The Nashville Predators already faced a tough challenge returning home, down 0-2 to the Phoenix Coyotes in their Western Conference semifinal. Now, they either have something to rally around with forwards Alexander Radulov and Andrei Kostitsyn suspended for Game 3 TOnight or wind up with yet another excuse in this series. The Predators announced the suspensions Tuesday morning and GM David Poile and coach Barry Trotz said the decision to punish the forwards for violating unspecified team rules was easy. The general manager is leaving the decision on whether the men return for Game 4 on Friday night up to Trotz. Poile refused to specify what Radulov and Kostitsyn did, saying any hint would give away what they did. He called their behavior unfortunate and selfish. The timing couldnt be worse for the Predators. They havent trailed 0-2 in a series since 2008 against Detroit. They managed to even that series by taking both games on their own ice before losing in six games. LA Kings roll home with impressive playoff lead EL SEGUNDO, Calif. Jeff Carter realizes how smooth the Los Angeles Kings 6-1 run through the postseason must look from the outside. The power forward knows most people dont realize how the Western Conferences eighth seeds had to grind, scratch and scrape just to get a chance to look so good. The Wests lowest seeds are in a commanding position after winning twice in St. Louis with gritty road efforts that left the hard-nosed Blues criticizing their own work ethic and defense. For a franchise with no Stanley Cup championships and just one playoff series victory in the previous 18 years, the Kings are adapting splendidly to the high stakes and physical style of the NHL postseason. After blowing out top-seeded Vancouver in the opening round, theyve largely dominated the Wests top two teams.

CELTICS 87, HAWKS 80 ATLANTA Paul Pierce had 36 points and 14 rebounds and Boston wiped out Atlantas 11-point lead in the second half even without point guard Rajon Rondo. The series is tied 1-1. Game 3 is Friday night in Boston and Rondo will be back for that one having sat out a 1-game suspension for bumping an official in the opener. The Hawks took a 65-54 lead late in the third quarter. But Boston sliced it to 66-61 by the end of the period. Pierce hit his first 3-pointer of the series after missing 10 to stretch the lead to 79-72 with 3 1/2 minutes left. Pierce finished 12-of-26 from the field and dropped to his knee and Tebowed after a free throw that locked it up with just a minute to go. Kevin Garnett had 15 points and 12 rebounds for Boston. LAKERS 104, NUGGETS 100 LOS ANGELES Kobe Bryant scored 38 points and Andrew Bynum followed up his playoff-opening triple-double with 27 points and nine rebounds as Los Angeles took a 2-0 series lead. Pau Gasol had 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Lakers, who still havent trailed in this series despite nearly crumbling against a much-improved effort by the Nuggets and Ty Lawson, who scored 25 points and led the fourth-quarter charge. Los Angeles 19-point lead in the third quarter dwindled to four with 3 minutes to play but Ramon Sessions scored four key points in the final 1:14 before Bryants icing free throws with 9.4 seconds left. Game 3 is Friday in Denver. The Nuggets lost their ninth straight road playoff game. Sessions scored 14 points for Los Angeles. Kenneth Faried had 14 points and 10 rebounds while Danilo Gallinari and Corey Brewer added 13 points apiece for Denver. Stoudemire has hand surgery, to miss Game 3 NEW YORK Amare Stoudemires difficult season may be over. Stoudemire had a small muscle in his left hand repaired Tuesday and will not play for the New York Knicks in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series against the Miami Heat on Thursday. Stoudemire met with a hand specialist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, a day after he was badly cut when he punched the case surrounding a fire extinguisher after the Knicks 104-94 loss in Miami. The Knicks are listing Stoudemire as doubtful for Game 4 on Sunday. Stoudemire apologized on his Twitter account for the act, which leaves the Knicks without another key player as they try to rally from a 2-0 deficit. Jeremy Lin is still recovering from knee surgery and Iman Shumpert is out for the season after tearing a knee ligament in Game 1. We all have done thing out of anger that we regret, Stoudemire wrote. That makes us human. Bad timing on my part. Sorry guys. This (too) shall pass. Stoudemire scored 18 points in Game 2, though he didnt get into a good flow until the fourth quarter, when the Knicks could never seriously challenge the Heat. But any hope of carrying the momentum from his positive finish into Thursdays game at Madison Square Garden was lost during his walk back to the locker room. Its tough. Your emotions run high. Split-second decisions can obviously alter things, center Tyson Chandler said after the game. You cant fault anybody because Im obviously a person that has high emotions at times. So one quick decision, make a mistake and now youve got to deal with the repercussions. Perhaps it was all the frustration built up during a tough season on and off the court. votes. Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau was second (27), Indiana coach Frank Vogel was third (7) and Memphis coach Lionel Hollins was fourth (6). Bostons Doc Rivers and Denvers George Karl each received a vote. Thibodeau, last years recipient, said a case could be made for Popovich to win every season. Im happy for him. Theyve had a great season, Thibodeau said. The way he runs an organization, you cant say enough about him. The thing I really admire about him is I had an opportunity to meet him 20 years ago and hes the same guy today that he was then. All the success, the championships, he has not changed one bit. The Spurs practiced Tuesday before the NBA made the afternoon announcement. All-Star Tony Parker, who might be having the most complete season of his career, later tweeted congratulations to the only NBA coach hes ever known. Not that Popovich, one of the NBAs most famously mercurial and colorful coaches for 16 seasons, is likely to be found on social media. The season loomed as one of Popovichs toughest projects yet. Besides Duncan, 36, and Manu Ginobili, 34, growing another year older, the Spurs started the year with much of the same roster that fell in the first round to the up-and-coming Grizzlies last spring. But Popovich, who is also team president, looked in unlikely places to keep San Antonios championship window from shutting. Although he typically keeps rookies on a short leash, Popovich put forward Kawhi Leonard in the starting lineup by midseason and has kept him there for the playoffs. Swingman Danny Green, who the Spurs have previously cut multiple times, found his way into the starting lineup and emerged as a surprise offensive spark. Popovich also steered the Spurs through what has typically been a death knell for them in recent years: injuries to their Big Three. Ginobili missed nearly half the season after breaking his hand, yet San Antonio still kept winning without their playmaking guard. Popovich was aggressive as ever in keeping his stars healthy. He willingly surrendered 11-game winning streaks twice by playing without Duncan, Parker and Ginobili to avoid wear and tear. When he didnt play them in Portland, a disgruntled fan chided Popovich in a letter for denying his family the chance to see three of the NBAs biggest stars in person. Popovich wrote the fan back. He understood but I have a different priority, a different responsibility. That rules for me. Duncan has said that kind of decision-making has made this Popovichs best coaching season yet. Popovich has a record of 847-399 since 1996, making him the leagues longest tenured coach with the same team. He is one of five coaches with four or more NBA championships, joining Pat Riley, Phil Jackson, John Kundla and Red Auerbach, whom the Coach of the Year award is named after. A case also couldve been made for Thibodeau to repeat as winner. The Bulls tied the Spurs with an NBA-best 50 wins even with reigning MVP Rose hampered by injuries all season. Jazz ready to give Parker a hard foul or two SAN ANTONIO The NBA playoffs are not even a week old and already there have been last-second thrillers in Oklahoma City, an AllStar suspended for bumping a ref, a stunning comeback in Memphis and Stoudemire smashing a glass case with his fist. Then theres the Spurs and Utah Jazz. Down 0-1, the Jazz dont want playoff craziness or drama. They just need a win. The Jazz are mapping a more physical game plan for Parker after the Spurs point guard shredded them for 28 points in Game 1. Jazz point guard Devin Harris said his counterpart will likely be in for a hard foul or two after Parker slashed into Utahs big and bruising frontcourt without hesitation. It wasnt tough talk from Harris, who had complimented Parker in the same breath. Jazz center Al Jefferson said the goal was not to hurt him or nothing like that but rather to dissuade Parker from barreling into the paint and punishing Utah with either an acrobatic layup or kicking out to a 3-point shooter. The playoffs is physical. We just cant let him feel like he can come down in that paint any time hes ready, Jefferson added. Parker brushed off the warning Tuesday. Hes heard worse. Its not the first time someone has said that, Parker said. My answer is always going to be the same: Im going to keep coming. Coach Tyrone Corbin said Josh Howard will remain in the starting lineup despite going scoreless in 16 minutes in Game 1. Howard returned from knee surgery last week and despite his bumpy return, Corbin is counting on the 9-year veterans playoff experience from his years in Dallas. The Spurs expect to be shorthanded. Backup center Tiago Splitter is doubtful after spraining his left wrist in the series opener, leaving San Antonio even more undersized. Center DeJuan Blair, who had started nearly every game before Boris Diaw took his job last month, will take over Splitters minutes. Protecting a 1-0 lead is a position the Spurs havent been in since 2008. Thats the last time San Antonio took a 2-0 lead, in a first-round series with Phoenix that the Spurs won in five games. The Spurs would like the same result this time.

DELPHOS Jefferson and Crestview got 5 1/2 innings in of their Northwest Conference baseball clash Monday but Mother Nature put a halt to it with the visiting Knights leading 8-2 at Wildcat Field. Jefferson got two runners on in the bottom of the first against Knight starter Jared Hallfeldt (5 IPs, 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, 3 BBs, 6 Ks; 96 pitches, 61 strikes): 1-out hits to left by Austin Jettinghoff and Ross Thompson; but to no avail. The Knights scored three runs in the top of the second against senior Curtis Miller (2 innings, 1 hit, 3 runs, 0 earned, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts; 46 pitches, 25 strikes), making his first start of 2012 after a wrestling injury to his shoulder. Jacob Wortman walked but was eliminated on a 1-out fielders choice

by Nathan Owens. Alec Heffners grounder was misplayed, putting runners on the corners. After Heffner stole second, both scored on a misplayed sharp grounder hit by Jake Harmon. He stole second and came home as Kole Rolsten singled to center. Jefferson got an infield hit to short by Zach Ricker with two outs in the second but left him stranded. The Knights placed two on in the third against reliever Mike Joseph (3-plus IPs, 5 hits, 3 BBs, 5 runs, 3 earned, 1 K): a 1-out liner to left by Venice Roberts and a 2-out misplayed grounder hit by Hallfeldt that put runners on the corners. After the latter swiped second, a comebacker by Owens ended the inning. Jefferson got one back in the third on a leadoff single by Tony George, a passed ball, a groundout by Jettinghoff and, after a walk to Thompson, a line
MARLINS 2, GIANTS 1 SAN FRANCISCO Giancarlo Stanton homered for the second time in three games to help back Ricky Nolascos third straight win and Miami earned its second victory in 10 games. Hanley Ramirez had an RBI single in the fourth that ended Matt Cains home scoreless streak to start the season at 21 innings. Nolasco (3-0) outdueled Cain (1-2) in the Marlins sixth victory against the Giants in their last eight meetings a stretch that includes Nolascos 2-1 win over Cain last Aug. 12 in South Florida. Struggling Miami closer Heath Bell pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save in six chances and first since walking a career-high four batters and taking his third loss Thursday in a 3-2 road loss to the Mets.
hit-and-run single by Miller to left that put Thompson at third. Miller took second on the throw home but was left there. Crestview scored three in the fourth. Heffner walked and Harmon bunted him up. Rolsten singled to right center to score Heffner and took second on the throw home after getting into a rundown and beating the tag at second; the sequence continued as he raced for an uncovered third base and scored on an error on the play. Matt Holden tripled to the fence in right center going with the steady wind blowing from the west and scored on a 1-out knock to center by Roberts. Jefferson made it 6-2 in the home half on a 1-out walk to Zach Ricker, a double by Justin Rode and a wild pitch, with Rode being stranded at third; after a 2-out walk to Jettinghoff, the sophomore was gunned down trying to swipe second.
Pablo Sandoval homered for the Giants. PADRES 2, BREWERS 0 SAN DIEGO Pinch-hitter Mark Kotsay belted a 2-run homer with one out in the eighth, lifting San Diego to the victory. Kotsay, who played with Milwaukee last year, drove a 1-1 pitch from Francisco Rodriguez (0-3) to right field. Will Venable was aboard on a single. It was Kotsays fourth career pinch homer and his first since Aug. 9, 2002, at Cincinnati during his first stint with the Padres. Milwaukees Ryan Braun, who had his first 3-homer game and added a triple for six RBIs in Monday nights 8-3 win, went 1-for-4 with a single. Edinson Volquez tossed seven innings of 3-hit ball before Andrew Cashner (2-1) pitched the eighth for the win. Huston Street closed it out for his fourth save in four chances, finishing a 3-hitter for the Padres first shutout of the season. PHILLIES 4, BRAVES 2 ATLANTA John Mayberry Jr. doubled and scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and Philadelphia beat in the first meeting of the season between the NL East rivals. After Brandon Beachy gave up only two runs in seven innings to outlast Phillies starter Cole Hamels, Philadelphia broke a 2-2 tie with two runs against left-hander Jonny Venters
Owens reached third with a 1-out hit in the Crestview fifth, a wild pitch and a bounceout by Heffner. The Knights added two in the sixth, chasing Joseph for George. Rolsten walked and stole second. Holden walked ending Millers pitching stint and both advanced on a wild pitch. Damian Helm walked to load the bases. With a strikeout and the infield drawn in, an error on Wortmans grounder allowed Rolsten and Holden to score. George fanned the next two to end the half-inning. That is when the weather made its mark, first with lightning and then heavy rain, causing the umps to eventually postpone the game. It will likely have to be continued at some point but that is to be decided. Jefferson visits Ada 5 p.m. Thursday. Crestview visits Bath today and hosts LCC Thursday (5 p.m.).
(2-1). Mayberry, in the game as a pinch hitter, doubled to right with one out, moved to third on Jimmy Rollins single and scored on Venters wild pitch to Placido Polanco. Shane Victorino added an infield hit and Hunter Pence singled to right, driving in Rollins for a 4-2 lead. Antonio Bastardo (1-1) pitched a perfect seventh. Jonathan Papelbon earned his ninth save by retiring the Braves in order in the ninth. ASTROS 6, METS 3 HOUSTON Chris Snyder hit a 3-run homer and Jed Lowrie added a 2-run shot to power Houston to the victory. Lowries drive off Jonathon Niese hit the inside of the foul pole in left field in the first inning. Snyder pushed the lead to 5-0 in the next inning with his first home run of the season, which landed in the Crawford Boxes in left field. Houston has won the first two games of this 3-game series. The Astros had lost six consecutive series entering Monday. Niese (2-1) allowed a season-high five runs and six hits in three innings. Houston starter J.A. Happ (2-1) allowed six hits and three runs with seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings, which was his longest outing of the year. Brett Myers threw a perfect ninth for his sixth save.
(Continued from Page 6) innings for Washington, which has scored only seven runs during its skid. CARDINALS 10, PIRATES 7 ST. LOUIS Adam Wainwright worked seven innings for his first win since September 2010 and the Cardinals got big nights at the plate from David Freese and Matt Holliday. Freeses sixth home run and third in five games was a tie-breaking 3-run shot off Charlie Morton (1-2) in the fifth. Holliday homered in the sixth off Jared Hughes to cap a 3-hit night with two RBIs. Allen Craig had two hits and an RBI in his season debut after rehabbing from knee surgery performed last fall shortly after he belted three homers in the World Series. Wainwright (1-3) allowed four runs and five hits. Jose Tabata and Pedro Alvarez each hit a 2-run homer for Pittsburgh.

The Associated Press PRO BASKETBALL MILWAUKEE Scott Skiles will return to coach the Milwaukee Bucks next season. Skiles told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he would be back as the teams coach and his agent, Keith Glass, confirmed the decision to The Associated Press. BASEBALL WASHINGTON Former teammates Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens had an awkward reunion at Clemens perjury trial, where Pettitte recalled a conversation he had with his longtime teammate, mentor and workout partner about a dozen years ago. Roger had mentioned to me that he had taken HGH, Pettitte testified, referring to human growth hormone. And that it could help with recovery and thats really all I remember about the conversation. Its a conversation that Clemens has famously claimed that Pettitte misremembers. Pettittes appearance enlivened the proceedings on Day 8 in the retrial of charges that Clemens lied when he told Congress in 2008 that he had never used steroids or human growth hormone. SAN FRANCISCO Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt landed on the disabled list for a non-baseball injury for the second time in less than eight months. The left-hander sprained his right knee Saturday night when he reached out to catch his 4-year-old son, Walker, as the 60-pound boy jumped off the couch to hug his arriving father. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria went on the 15-day disabled list with a partially torn left hamstring thats expected to sideline him 4-8 weeks. PRO FOOTBALL ALAMEDA, Calif. The big push at Minnesotas Capitol to pass a public subsidy for a new Vikings stadium stalled Tuesday, as the proposal got snared in partisan politics. NASCAR penalizes 6 Nationwide Series teams CHARLOTTE, N.C. NASCAR has fined six Nationwide Series teams for failing inspection at Richmond International Raceway. The penalties were levied against the 3-car teams for Richard Childress Racing and Turner Motorsports. NASCAR ruled the front upper bumper covers for all six cars had been illegally modified. Crew chiefs Luke Lambert, Danny Stockman, Trent Owens, Jimmy Elledge, Ernie Cope and Mike Shiplett were all fined $10,000 and placed on probation through Dec. 31. Car chiefs Phil Gould, Robert Strmiska, Shannon Rursch, Ronald Hornaday III, Paul Balmer and Christopher Meyers also were placed on probation through Dec. 31. NASCAR did not dock points from the teams, which included Sadler, third-place Austin Dillon and seventh-place Justin Allgaier. NC bank buys Mayfields home in courthouse sale NEWTON, N.C. The bank that held the mortgage on property owned by former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield has bought the North Carolina home at a courthouse auction. Carolina Farm Credit bid more than $1.7 million for the home and land owned by Mayfield, who was suspended from NASCAR after testing positive for methamphetamine in 2009. The auction was conducted on the Catawba County Courthouse steps Monday. The bank was the only bidder. Mayfield and his wife, Shana, had taken out two mortgages from Carolina Farm Credit in 2006 on the property for more than $3 million. They last made a payment in April 2011. The Mayfields must be out of their home in 10 days. Mayfield was in Caldwell County on Monday on pending drug charges, which were delayed until September.
off-season offer to move to Penske Racing. He took the job and RPM had to quickly find a new driver. They settled on Almirola, who had 35 previous Sprint Cup starts but none since the last five races of the 2010 season. The results have been sub-par Almirola has one top-10 finish and is currently 23rd in the standings. It wasnt good enough. Its a goal of the 43 team to make the Chase this year and I think Mikes experience and knowledge can help get us there, Almirola said. Weve got some ground to make up but I think we can do it. Thats the present-day mentality in NASCAR, where claiming one of the 12 spots in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship is the new measuring point for a successful season. Drivers and crews want to be in the Chase so they can race for the championship but for team owners, getting one of those slots is often enough to placate the sponsor. Being part of the Chase ensures maximum exposure over the final 10 weeks of the season and those cars and drivers consistently overshadow the other 31 in the field. Some have suggested that the pressure to make the Chase is partly to blame for the caution-free racing over the last month. Drivers have to constantly think about the
CHARLOTTE, N.C. Lucas Glover already has been through a lot this year, even if the calendar shows the first week in May. He injured his left knee when he slipped off a paddle board in the Pacific Ocean the weekend before the season opener in Kapalua, and it wound up keeping him out of golf until the middle of March. Then, he suffered a rib injury at the Masters but played through it the next week at Hilton Head, the only PGA Tour event in his native South Carolina. He is the defending champion at the Wells Fargo Championship. It will be only his sixth tournament this year. I think any time you come somewhere youve had success, it gives you that little bit of confidence even if its been a strange year for you, he said. Strange, indeed. The paddle board incident was a fluke fall and Glover didnt grasp how serious it was. He went to the practice range the next week in Honolulu thinking he might be able to play and walk on a flat golf course. He didnt realize he would be out two months. More peculiar was the rib injury. He said he pulled an intercostal muscle on his left side. If it had been any other week but Augusta, I dont think I would have played, he said. But its pretty hard to withdraw from that one, so I played through it, and just got it fixed and feel pretty good. Glover feels as good as he has since he paddled out to
JACK AND THE TREE: One of the famous stories from Pebble Beach is a tree that got in the way of Arnold Palmer trying to win in 1967. One shot behind in the final round, his approach to the par-5 14th hit the tree and went out-of-bounds. Palmer reloaded and the same thing happened. He wound up making a 9. The next day, a fierce storm uprooted the tree. Turns out Jack Nicklaus has his own tree story. Nicklaus was a 21-year-old amateur in the 1961 U.S. Open at Oakland Hills and he was one shot behind playing the par-5 12th as he made a run at Gene Littler. Thats when he ran into an elm tree that wasnt even in the way. Nicklaus said he nailed a 3-wood and it was headed for the green when a gust of wind blew the elm toward the fairway, in the path of the ball, and knocked it down. I felt like it was going to be on the green, he said. It dropped it straight down. I made a 6 instead of a 4. And then I 3-putted the 17th. He tied for fourth, then won his first U.S. Open a year later at Oakmont. As for that tree? That tree is gone, Nicklaus replied. FOSTER OUT: Lee Westwood is in good form coming into the next two majors. Now he needs a caddie. Westwood arrived at Quail Hollow on Tuesday to learn that his caddie, Billy Foster, blew out his right knee while reaching to kick a soccer ball. The worst part about is that Foster had no intention of taking part in a match between a group of European caddies
Davis said any special exemption would be offered before sectional qualifying fields are established. Weve always been very stingy on these special exemptions, he added. In general, we dont want to give up any special exemptions unless theres a compelling reason. NOT A BIG MISS: Hank Haneys book, The Big Miss, has been anything but that for Crown Publishing. The book on his six years as the swing coach for Tiger Woods reached No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list on April 15 for combined print and e-books. It reached as high as No. 2 for two weeks under hardcover nonfiction, and has only fallen to No. 5 this week. While Crown does not disclose sales figures, it says the book has gone back to press seven times and there are 228,000 copies in print. DIVOTS: Charles Howell III made a hole-in-1 in the final round at New Orleans, his second ace on the PGA Tour this year. He also had a holein-1 on the seventh hole of the final round at the Honda Classic. ... Se Ri Pak has a slight tear in her left labrum from slipping on stairs last week. She will be out indefinitely, though she said the next two months would be important for her recovery. ... No one has made 50 consecutive cuts on the PGA Tour since Tiger Woods record streak ended at 142 in 2005. Steve Stricker has made 49 consecutive cuts going into The Players Championship next week. ... Greg Norman is making a rare appearance on the Champions Tour when he plays the Senior Players Championship at Fox Chapel outside Pittsburgh at the end of June. STAT OF THE WEEK: Tiger Woods has won or finished second 100 times in his PGA Tour career or 38 percent of the time as a pro. FINAL WORD: If Im being compared to him, Im doing something right. Rory McIlroy, on comparisons with Woods.
The Associated Press Liverpool warms up for FA Cup final with loss LONDON Liverpools hopes of taking a morale-boosting victory into the FA Cup final were dashed thanks to a 1-0 home loss to Fulham on Tuesday, improving Evertons chances of finishing above its Merseyside rival in the Premier League for the first time since 2005. Everton drew 1-1 with Stoke in the nights other match, putting David Moyes team three points above Liverpool with two rounds remaining. Martin Skrtels own goal in the fifth minute means Liverpool has won only five out of 18 league matches at Anfield, a ground once seen as a fortress in the 18-time champions heyday. With Saturdays final against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium in mind, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish made nine changes to the team that beat Norwich 3-0 on Saturday and it showed as Fulham came away with a first topflight win at Anfield. The attitude and desire wasnt there, Dalglish said. It wasnt a good night for us, me included. A powerfully driven cross by John Arne Riise, a former Liverpool player, hit the standing leg of Skrtel and squirmed past goalkeeper Alexander Doni. Liverpool has now picked up just one point from its past four home games, against Wigan, Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion and Fulham teams it would typically expect to beat. Everton was denied victory at Britannia Stadium when striker Cameron Jerome scored in the 69th minute for Stoke, canceling out Peter Crouchs own goal a minute before halftime the 1,000th goal in the Premier League this season. Everton had scored four goals in each of its previous three league games but was kept at bay by Stoke after Crouch had scored in his own net after an attempted clearance from Marc Wilson struck the lanky strikers back. Jerome leveled when he made a forward burst and held off two defenders before firing past goalkeeper Tim Howard. Everton has games remaining at already-relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers and against Newcastle at home, while Liverpool hosts Chelsea before traveling to Swansea on the final day of the season. ROME Napoli broke a fourway for third place and the final Champions League berth with a 2-0 win over Palermo, stating its intentions of returning to the top European competition it fared so well in this season. Edinson Cavani put Napoli ahead with a penalty in the 16th minute at San Paolo stadium for his 23rd goal of the Serie A season and Marek Hamsik doubled the lead in the 35th with a sublime chest control and shot from the center of the area. Also, Napoli midfielder Gokhan Inler hit the crossbar in the fifth. With two rounds remaining, Napoli moved three points in front of Udinese, Inter Milan and Lazio, who all play today. Earlier, Roma and Chievo Verona drew 0-0 under heavy rain, hurting Romas chances of qualifying for the Europa League. Roma remained seventh, with only the fourth-, fifth- and possibly sixth-place clubs qualifying for the Europa League. MADRID Villarreal and Granada moved closer to ensuring their top status in the Spanish

league next season with victories. Villarreal ended a 3-game winless run with a 3-2 victory at Sporting Gijon, which is still fighting relegation and seven points behind its opponent with two rounds to play. Granada is one point ahead of Villarreal after beating Espanyol 2-1. That means Sporting needs to pass Rayo Vallecano, which is at Mallorca today, to stay up. Zaragoza also needs to beat Levante today to maintain its slim chances of staying up. Rayo Vallecano is six points head of Zaragoza and Sporting. Also, recently relegated Racing Santander salvaged a 1-1 draw at Getafe for its 19th straight game without a win. Santander, which will finish last to go down to the second division, hasnt won a match since Jan. 7. Villarreal took the lead in the 19th minute when Bruno Valero gathered the rebound from his saved shot and passed for Mario Gaspar to shoot beyond goalkeeper Juan Pablo Colinas. Sporting tied it in the 39th on Alberto Loras shot from outside the area but Villarreal scored the next two goals on Marcos Sennas penalty kick in the 43rd and Hernan Perezs score in the 56th. Cristian Zapata headed a ball straight into the path for Alejandro Galvez to score in the 85th for Sporting. Granada also moved away from the drop thanks to a pair of firsthalf goals by Odion Ighalo at its Carmenes Stadium, with Didac Vila giving Espanyol hope when he surprised goalkeeper Julio Cesar with a long-range shot in the 54th. PARIS French leader Montpellier missed a penalty in the fourth minute of injury time after a mass brawl between players to draw 2-2 at home with Evian, wasting the chance to put more pressure on Paris SaintGermain. Evian led 2-1 until Olivier Giroud scored his league-leading 21st goal of the season for Montpellier in the 84th minute. Winger Remy Cabella was fouled in the penalty area with just seconds remaining but forward Souleymane Camaras spot kick was saved by goalkeeper Stephan Andersen. Camara had to wait several minutes to take the penalty after fighting erupted with Montpelliers Younes Belhanda and Evians Cedric Mongongu trading blows. Both players were sent off. Younes Belhanda had put Montpellier ahead on a penalty kick in the 42nd after Andersen had barged into Giroud. Evian tied it two minutes later when Thomas Kahlenberg poked in Saber Khalifas high ball and took the lead in the 69th when Kevin Berigaud scored from close range. Champs semis, Manchester derby get big US ratings NEW YORK Both Champions League semifinals and the Manchester derby for first place in the Premier League averaged more 1 million television viewers in the U.S. despite weekday afternoon starting times. The four Champions League semifinals averaged 1,033,000 viewers on Foxs English- and Spanish-language networks, up 29 percent from last year, Fox announced today. Manchester Citys 1-0 win over Manchester United on Monday drew 1,033,000 viewers on ESPN, the largest U.S. audience for a Premier League match on cable. The previous high was 610,000 for Arsenals win over Chelsea on ESPN2 on Dec. 27, 2010.

six years after the Treasury Department essentially closed the charitys operation by ordering U.S. banks to freeze the groups assets. It accused the group of funneling money to terrorist-affiliated organizations. The leaders of KindHearts for Charitable Humanitarian Development in Toledo denied being connected to any terrorist group and sued the government after it refused to say why the charitys money was frozen. The charity said in
January that it had shut down and the settlement says it will remain closed. The deal also calls for all of the charitys assets to be spent on its debts and as grants for charitable purposes. Once thats completed, the charity will be removed from the list terrorist organizations. A federal judge sided with the charity in 2009, ruling that the government violated the Constitution because it did not tell the organization why it was freezing its assets or give
it a chance to respond. The judge later told the government to halt the investigation because its actions could cause KindHearts to lose its attorneys and harm its reputation. The Treasury Department in 2006 said KindHearts was connected with the Hamas-affiliated Holy Land Foundation and the al-Qaida-affiliated Global Relief Foundation. KindHearts leaders have said it is a nonprofit charitable organization, providing up to $6 million a year in humanitarian aid to the worlds poor.

DEAR BRUCE: BRUCE WILLIAMS I am in the process of selling a rental property, and I am told I will have to pay capital gains taxes. Someone told me there are ways around that. Any thoughts? -Reader, via email DEAR READER: I dont know of any direct method to avoid the taxes. You can, of course, reinvest the money under the like-kind exchange rule and thereby postpone paying the taxes. The operative term here is postpone. When that property is sold, the tax man will get his due. Given the information you have provided, I know of no other way for you to avoid the taxes. The best way to find out exactly is to consult an accountant who is familiar with your income, finances, etc. He or she will be able to give you a better picture than I can of how much you will pay, if anything. Be glad you made a profit; it could have been a loss. DEAR BRUCE: I am estranged from my family. I found out that my last living parent, my mother, died. Of course I have not heard a thing from my siblings and would like to know if I was remembered in her will. I probably was not, but still I would like to know. Is it true that I can get a copy of the will as it is public knowledge? I understand it has to have been probated first. -- P.T. in Arizona DEAR P.T.: In most cases, the answer is yes. I am reluctant to say this is true in every instance. Since you are not on good terms with your family members, check with the surrogate in the county where your mothers will has been probated. Wills are on file for a good many years with the Surrogate Court. Wills, as you know, are public documents, and for a very modest fee, copies can be purchased.

Munch sale since the other versions of the composition are in Norwegian museums. One version is owned by the National Museum and two others by the Munch Museum, also in Oslo. Sothebys said a total of eight works have sold for $80 million or more at auction. Only two other works besides Picassos Nude, Green Leaves, and Bust have sold for more than $100 million at auction. Those are Picassos Boy With a Pipe (The Young Apprentice) for $104.1 million in 2004 and Alberto Giacomettis Walking Man I for $104.3 million in 2010.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Former 1960s teen pop idol Bobby Vee says hes been diagnosed with Alzheimers disease. The 69-year-old, born Robert Velline in Fargo, N.D., says on his website that he was diagnosed last year. Vee was catapulted to stardom after the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP Big Bopper Richardson in a 1959 plane crash en route to Moorhead, Minn. Vee and his friends filled in for the trio at the Moorhead performance and soon after that he recorded his first single, Suzie Baby, for Soma Records in Minneapolis. The St. Paul Pioneer Press says Vees wife of 48 years, Karen Velline, is also dealing with health issues. Shes on a waiting list for a lung transplant.
NEW YORK (AP) The Jessica Simpson baby watch is finally over. Simpson gave birth to a daughter named Maxwell Drew Johnson in Los Angeles on Tuesday, said publicist Lauren Auslander. Maxwell weighed 9 lbs. 13 ounces. Since announcing her pregnancy last Halloween over Twitter, Simpson posed nude for the cover of Elle magazine, shared her cravings like salted cantaloupe and pop tarts and joked about her excess of amniotic fluid on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Maxwell is the first child for 31-year-old Simpson and her 32-year-old fiance Eric Johnson, a former NFL player. The name is a tribute to the couples families: Maxwell is Johnsons middle name and the maiden name of his mother, and Drew is Simpsons mothers maiden name. We are so grateful for all of the love, support and prayers we have received, Simpson said in a statement on her website. This has been the greatest experience of our lives!! Simpson had come in for some ribbing about her seemingly endless pregnancy. She kept up public appearances, including on NBCs Fashion Star, and used Twitter to send pregnancy updates, such as her dream of wearing a leopard caftan in the hospital. Recently even celebrities like Katy Perry and Chelsea Handler posted tweets asking if the singer and fashion designer had given birth yet. Im getting frightened, Handler said. Simpson addressed the rumor mill herself in April, tweeting: To everyone who keeps congratulating me on the birth of my baby girl ... Im still pregnant!

-- Sleep with your head elevated. Mucus pools in your sinuses at night when your head is down. Prop up your head with pillows or a wedge during sleep. -- Be nice to your nose. Blow your nose gently, one nostril at a time. Forceful blowing can irritate the nasal passages and propel mucus back up into your sinuses. This can make the sinusitis worse. -- Avoid antihistamines unless prescribed. Antihistamines can be effective for nasal allergies that cause lots of sneezing. But they also make mucus thick and hard to drain. Even if your sinusitis is triggered by allergies, avoid antihistamines. Once you have sinusitis, the antihistamines can make it harder to get rid of it. -- Be careful with decongestants. Using decongestant nasal sprays for more than three to four days can cause increased swelling after the medication wears off. That swelling of the nasal passages can make sinusitis worse. With sinusitis, like with most illnesses, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Take it from a fellow sinusitis sufferer: Youll thank me if you take my advice and curse yourself if you dont! (Dr. Komaroff is a physician and professor at Harvard Medical School. Tomorrows Horoscope
THURSDAY, MAY 3, 2012 A secret hope or desire can be fulfilled in the year ahead by making it your primary objective. Keep it in the front of your mind, regardless of what else you have going on, and youll have a good chance of realizing your dream. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) -Be careful about unthinkingly getting involved in a complicated project before you truly know all the facts. It behooves you to thoroughly check things out. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) -If youre unable to do so yourself, it might be wise to have somebody you trust keep an eye on your spending. This isnt likely to be one of your better days for managing funds. CANCER (June 21-July 22) -- The only way youre going to be productive is to make a schedule and stick to it. Tasks or projects that you leave until the last minute arent likely to get accomplished. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) -- You have great self-discipline when you choose to exercise it, and it behooves you to do so when it comes to certain things you know you should not eat or drink. Dont overindulge. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) -- Be on your toes when it comes to someone in your social group who is looking for another to pay his or her way. If youre not careful, she or he is likely to take advantage of your generous nature. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) -Because youre usually the one who is a step ahead of everybody else, you might think you can let your guard down. The moment you do, however, someone will shoot out in front of you. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) -- Youre usually smart enough not to believe everything you hear, but you could easily be snookered based on some very colorful information that is the product of anothers vivid imagination. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23Dec. 21) -- Be mindful of the risks involved if you find yourself tempted to impulsively make a financial investment on something just because it sounds intriguing. Check it out first. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) -- Youll be much more popular if you take the emphasis off of your own desires and make an effort to go along with what others want. Be a joiner. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) -Although our hunches can sometimes provide us with things our logic overlooks, dont think this is the case for you just because you want it to be true. Use common sense. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) -- Think carefully before involving yourself in a joint venture being formed for either a commercial or social purpose. Know what youre getting yourself into. ARIES (March 21-April 19) -- If some kind of an agreement you made hasnt lived up to what you expected, get in touch with the others involved to see if they feel the same way. Make whatever adjustments you can.

ing effect on a handful of states, including Georgia, that have similar laws. Gustavo Madrigal, a 20-year-old illegal immigrant who attended the Atlanta May Day rally, said he keeps attending the rallies because he has always been taught that an American doesnt give up. Madrigal, who came from Mexico with his parents when he was 9, is applying for scholarships and doing fundraisers in attempt to raise $59,000 to go to Hampshire College in Massachusetts. Im not asking for a handout, free housing or health care. I just want a chance, he said. Since the last major immigration reform in 1986, which extended amnesty to millions here illegally, activism has ebbed and flowed. Proposition 187, passed by California voters in 1994, prohibited illegal immigrants from using social services, including health care and education. The law was eventually thrown out, but it angered many Latinos and helped make California a solidly Democratic state. In 2005, a bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives that would have criminalized anyone who helped illegal immigrants also had a galvanizing effect. For several months in 2006, hundreds of thousands rallied across the country. The U.S. Senate responded, passing a reform bill that would have given a path to citizenship for millions here illegally. As is often the norm with immigration, however, the result was paralysis. As years have turned to decades, immigration activists have had to accept the reality that it could be years or even decades before the issue is dealt with by Congress. President Barack Obamas election win in 2008 represented arguably the best hope in a generation for so-called comprehensive reform: combining better border security and a crackdown on undocumented workers with a way for millions here illegally to come out of the shadows and stay.

House for instance, is feminine: la casa. Pencil, however, is masculine: el lapiz. A student asked, What gender is computer? Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male
and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether computer should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The mens group decided that computer should definitely be of the feminine gender (la computadora) because: 1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic. 2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else. 3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for possible later retrieval; and 4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it. (THIS GETS BETTER!) The womens group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine (el computador) because: 1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on. 2. They have a lot of data but still cant think for themselves. 3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time, they ARE the problem; and 4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model. The women won.
