The need for Sustainable Drainage (SUDS) Stormwater Infiltration Cells
There are essentially two approaches to run-off attenuation or storage: 1) Attenuation Storage This requires a tank or other impermeable retention unit to hold the run-off and to discharge via a pipe directly to the existing sewer or water course. e.g Stormwater Infiltration Cells wrapped in an impermeable geomembrane. 2) Infiltration This requires the retention unit to act like a soakaway and to allow the run-off to be discharged directly into the surrounding ground e.g Stormwater Infiltration Cells wrapped in a permeable geotextile. Drain Center Civils can provide four Stormwater Infiltration Cells from three leading manufacturers.
When any previously undeveloped site is built on and paved over, water run-off from the newly impermeable surface increases by up to 80%. This can place excessive pressure on existing watercourses and local drainage infrastructure. So when storms bring sudden, unusually heavy rainfall, there can be localised flooding and damage to property. Government and the Environment Agencies are now promoting the use of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) to restrict run-off to a level equivalent to that of a natural green field site.

In conjunction with retention systems it is common practice to include some form of flow control unit at the outlet to ensure that the collected surface water can be discharged slowly and in a controlled manner. Drain Center Civils provides a range of integrated surface and stormwater run-off management systems that can be utilised for soakaway or storage solutions.

Choosing the Correct System
To guarantee structural integrity, any underground structure must be strong enough to support the loads to which it will be subjected without any unacceptable deflection. The correct choice of Stormwater Infiltration Cell must have appropriate proven top (vertical) and side (lateral) load bearing capacity and deflection characteristics to suit site conditions. The five key site considerations to be noted when designing a geocellular box system are: 1. Depth of cover 2. Soil type 3. Surface finishing 4. Presence of groundwater 5. Type of traffic/loading Note: The combination of these factors effectively means that the required characteristics of a geocellular system to be installed under a trafficked location (for example) will be very different from that under a landscaped/low-loaded location.

Garastor Unit
Garastor (polypropylene control chamber) represents a house by house, rather than a development wide approach, to stormwater management. Garastor controls the flow of water at source by temporarily storing water under a soft landscaped area using the AquaCell System or in the void space under the floor slab of a residential garage. There are two versions of the Garastor available both of which are 500mm in diameter, the 6SC500 version is 1m deep for garage installations (with a 300mm storage depth capacity) and the 6SC501 is 1.25m deep for use with AquaCell (with a 400mm storage depth capacity). When Garastor is used in conjunction with an AquaCell tank the configuration of units must be no deeper than 1 AquaCell unit. Stormwater 63

Marley Waterloc Marley Waterloc
Waterloc is strong and lightweight and suitable for pedestrian and trafficked areas. Each cell has a volume of 250 litres with 96% voids. They can be easily used in a modular format to form a stormwater storage unit configured to suit the capacity required, soil conditions and the land area available. The Waterloc range has clear advantages over similar products: Performance proven in field trials Full range of easy to use ancillaries Rapid water dispersion capability Lightweight Unique water inlet chamber Easy to use universal connector Four Waterloc cells equal 1m3
Standard Cell
Marley Plumbing & Drainage stormwater management systems address the need to deal with rainwater run-off at source, rather than discharging directly into watercourses or rivers. Central to the range is the new Waterloc cell which provides a cost effective and flexible way of creating underground stormwater storage for infiltration and attenuation systems or for rainwater harvesting purposes. The innovative design of Waterloc utilises columns of extruded polypropylene honeycomb structure, already widely used in stormwater storage applications, in a unique combination with injection moulded grids to provide both vertical and horizontal water flow.

Infiltration and Attenuation
As with conventional soakaways, concerns have been expressed over the tendency for the plastic cell type structure to silt up over time with no means of cleaning or removal of debris other than total removal and replacement. However, the use of the Marley Waterloc range of components for an infiltration or attenuation scheme provides a number of benefits over conventional installation methods: Access to the soakaway for inspection and cleaning. An inlet chamber for an optional filter and access to the incoming pipe connection for cleaning purposes. Improved inflow capacity via a single connection to the drainage system.

Rainwater Harvesting
A modular, low cost water recycling and management system can be constructed from separate components consisting of an inlet chamber, filter unit, submersible pump unit and base unit combined with Waterloc cells to form a central filtering and pumping riser. The system uniquely combines infiltration with recycling, thereby alleviating the problems of either water shortage or flooding. The versatility of this system means that any size and combination of storage or infiltration unit can be constructed, as long as room is allowed for the central pumping riser. In operation, rainwater is collected from the available roof area and passed through a silt trap, UG60, before it enters the main filter in the inlet chamber where any fine sedimentary particles are removed. The filtered water is then fed to the base of the installation where it aerates with the stored water. When the collected rainwater has reached a minimum level, the control system can be activated, allowing the submersible pump to supply water on demand. Control units are supplied pre-wired, requiring only a final connection to be made to a 240V power supply via a RCD breaker. Once installed, the micropressor based controls can be easily set up to control the pump discharge pressure and monitor the water level.
