ADVISERS MESSAGE
Dear Residents,
The budget this year is focused on creating an inclusive society. It is focussed on measures to help the elderly, the disabled and low income Singaporeans. About half a billion dollars have been set aside to help our elderly age in the community instead of in a nursing home. So Singaporeans who want to take care of their aged parents who are also not so well will be given many more options through better day care facilities, higher medical subsidies and caregiver support to name a few. We are also looking at how to make it easier for people who are in need to get help whether from the CDCs, FSCs or other help agencies. I have received many positive feedback from residents on this years budget. Many welcomed the focus on the elderly, the disabled and our low income. It is important that we focus on developing an inclusive society which basically means that everyone has a place in our society and can aspire to a better life for their children. However, creating an inclusive society is not the job of the government alone. We need everyone to do their part. In Bukit Batok East for instance, I have volunteers who help in running tuition classes for children from low income families, organize activities for our senior citizens, coordinate help for those using our mobile clinic and even distribute food packs to the elderly needy who are not mobile. However, I need many more volunteers as the work is never done and many more could be done in Bukit Batok East. During my house visits, I had invited many of you to join me as volunteers. I hope that many more of you will do so and do your part to help create a stronger and more inclusive Bukit Batok East. Those who are interested can get the volunteer forms from our community club. Or you could also go to our website at bbenmc@yahoo.com to indicate your interest. Halimah Yacob

These dishes are below 500 kcals. Carrot cake that is cooked with the healthier cooking oil is lower in saturated fat. A diet high in saturated fat raises the level of LDL-cholesterol in our body, which increases the risk of heart disease. Major sources of saturated fat include animal fats (e.g. lard, fatty meat, skin of poultry); high-fat dairy products (eg. Full cream milk, butter, ghee); food prepared with palmbased vegetable oil; as well as dishes containing milk or coconut cream.
ealth Promotion Board (HPB)s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Ang Hak Seng, explaining to Grassroots Adviser Madam Halimah Yacob, that HPB works with noodles suppliers to develop wholegrain noodles that are higher in fibre. Noodles were identified as one of the main ways of increasing whole-grain intake as almost nine in 10 Singapore residents consume noodles at least once a week. A bowl of noodles prepared using whole-grain noodles will provide about half the daily amount of wholegrains recommended for adults. Evidence suggests that people who have a diet rich in whole-grains cut their risk of becoming overweight by 50% compared to people who rarely consume consume whole-grains.
