1 COURSE OUTLINE NUTR-480 Industrial Stage/NUTR Office: MS2-037 514-398-7754 Office hours: Tuesdays 12:00-1:00 PM stan.kubow@mcgill.

ca Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to enable students to obtain real world research experience in the nutrition product industry with an approved host organization. The course can involve a wide range of human nutrition research pertaining to food industry directions including, although not limited to, nutritional supplements, food fortification, nutraceuticals, functional foods, food safety and quality assurance. The course will help develop skills towards: (a) project implementation towards scientific, technical and consumer applications; and (b) presentation and communication of scientific, technical and consumer concepts pertaining to nutrition and food industry directions. 2 The company will be asked to provide a grade based on the student performance during their stage. The grading rubric will form the basis for the grade. Research Report: 30%

An 8-page summary report of the project is required that describes the project and project outcomes performed by the student. The report needs to be submitted by November 30th. The report (1.0 line spacing, 12 point Times New Roman font, not including references, tables or figures) should be a succinct documentary of the development of the project, including the original intent, research, planning, decisions, problems and their solutions, and the final evaluation of the project in the light of the original intent. Documentation of the project from concept to completion could include (if applicable): statement of intent, research and idea generation, prototyping and testing, selection and justification of appropriate materials, processes and resources. Reference format: When citing references use the following format: Author(s) name. (year). Article/Study title. Journal reference, Vol. #:pgs. Example of what a reference should look like: Perez-Balibrea S., Moreno D.A., Garcia-Viguera C. (2008) Influence of light on health-promoting phytochemicals of broccoli sprouts, J. Sci. A 15-minute PowerPoint presentation will be presented based on the summary report previously submitted by the student. The presentation of the topic as selected by the student should focus on original intent of the project, research, planning, decisions, problems and their solutions, and a final evaluation of the project in the light of the original intent. A 5-10 minute question period will follow the presentation. McGill University values academic integrity.
