Rising Star Headed to New Zealand

AFL Samoa has selected one of Samoans rising stars to attend an Australian Football League training camp in New Zealand this month. Joseph Falesa, 16 years old, from Lepa/Lotofaga College will be attending the South Pacific training camp from 18 22 April, which will be fully funded by the AFL in Australia and AFL Samoa. He was selected to participate in the intensive training camp because of his outstanding performance during the inaugural Aaron Edwards Cup competition held last month. The training camp will give Joseph an opportunity to experience training at an elite level and provide exposure to AFL overseas. His Coach Mr Lole has been working closely with Joseph and said, A good player is someone who is well prepared not only in his performance but also has good discipline, Joseph possesses both these attributes. He has a very bright future. AFL Samoas Development Officer Gabel Stathis was very excited about how this opportunity would assist Joseph and the development of AFL in Samoa. The upcoming week for Joseph is going to be an invaluable experience for him and will give him a chance to train and play football at the highest level, this camp will also prepare him for next years 18s carnival, Mr Stathis said. The training camp is part of AFLs quest to push and develop the game of AFL in the Oceania region. Joseph will be the only Samoan attending the Carnival and is an example of where this sport can take young motivated athletes. As Joseph is turning 17 this year it will be harder for him to make the Oceania squad that tours Australia in July. AFL Samoa see this as a chance to get him ready for next years under 18s carnival, and to encourage other aspiring Samoan footballers to play the game that is giving him International experience. AFL Samoa wishes Joseph all the best in the upcoming training camp
