ETL Tool Migration Case Study

Data Migration Project enhances Insurers ETL environment

The Challenge
Our client, one of the largest insurance and investment companies in the U.S., needed to reduce the costs and risk of populating their Asset Data Warehouse environment. They supported multiple, inconsistent platforms, worried about the viability of existing tool sets, and struggled to find talent to support legacy system interfaces. Timing was critical; the project needed to be complete by fiscal year-end.

LoganBrittons approach leveraged the clients expertise, dramatically improved their ETL process and provided education and documentation. LoganBritton analyzed the current system and designed a solution that provided standards for: #" ETL Architecture #" Process development #" Testing and acceptance criteria #" Meta data #" Documentation With the ETL standards designed and implemented and with the additional functionality provided by Informatica PowerMart, our client will realize significantly shorter development cycles. They will also reduce ETL development cost and risk, and will increase confidence in their data accuracy. The client team is well prepared to accomplish future development efforts. LoganBritton provided on-the-job education throughout the engagement, and facilitated vendor training for the new tool set. Formal documentation and structured classroom training occurred during the transition from testing to implementation. LoganBritton helped this insurance and investment company to totally overhaul its ETL processes; something they needed and wanted to accomplish for a long time. Our client received a complete and accurate migration of their Asset Data Warehouse sources, on time, on budget. They might even admit they had fun doing it!

The Goals
!"Standardize data extraction, transformation and load (ETL) processes !"Shorten ETL development cycles !"Reduce maintenance efforts !"Increase proficiency and self-sufficiency in ETL methods and technology !"Boost confidence in their data accuracy The client wanted a simple, yet powerful and flexible ETL tool set. LoganBritton recommended consolidating their existing ETL processes to a single Informatica PowerMart solution.

The Approach
LoganBritton assigned consultants highly skilled in both the clients existing tools and the recommended Informatica PowerMart solution. Through an in-depth discovery process, LoganBritton sought out expertise residing in the clients organization. The team of experts from both organizations designed and implemented the successful solution. Discovery phase recommendations provided a comprehensive view of 135 existing processes, categorized based on complexity. No two processes were the same: each required unique analysis to determine the best conversion approach. Subsequent development tasks were prioritized based on these findings. To ensure client confidence in the data migration success, consultants worked with the client to test each conversion. The testing strategy included development of test cases and expected results. Original, baseline results were compared to the new, standardized Informatica Powermart results. LoganBritton guaranteed cost, delivery timeframes and quality with a fixed price agreement.

The Technology
Informatica PowerMart Microsoft Windows NT
