It’s May once again, and I want to take this opportunity as we head into our yearly California Standards testing to thank all
teachers, administrators and school staff for the dedication, time and hard work you all have put forward teaching and
preparing our students to demonstrate mastery of our state standards. I also want to acknowledge those of you at multi-
track, Early Start and Balanced Calendar schools that have already completed the CST testing sequence. As you all
know, the California Standards Test represents one of the most important opportunities we have to showcase the good
work we are doing educating our students.
After testing and as we finish out the school year in June, we begin to prepare ourselves for a new district organization
and the district wide implementation of the Early Start calendar. I sincerely look forward to this coming school year with
hope and great expectation for our progress. Los Angeles is served well by educators who put the needs and interests of
students and student learning at the forefront of all that we do. This professionalism will be the key to deep and lasting
improvement to our schools and to our students in the year, and years, to come.

Teacher’s Hour Season
Participate with schools who are exploring the implementation of the Common Core State Standards on the Teacher’s
Hour. The first program provided an overview of the CCSS. The second and third programs provided an in-depth
look at the ELA instructional shifts and mathematics instructional shifts, respectively. All three programs are available
for viewing on LAUSD’s RtI 2 website http://rti.lausd.net/ (click Connect with Others).
Tune in to the next Teacher’s Hour to learn about the CCSS and the new assessment structure. The program will be
sharing information about what the CCSS assessments are and how they will affect teachers, students, and
administrators. Teacher’s Hour Episode 4, Season 3 is scheduled to air on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. on
KLCS. This program will also become available on the RtI 2 website after airing.
Common Core State Standards Module 1
Common Core State Standards Module 1 has been released for school use. This is a 45-minute module designed to
provide an overview and awareness to the CCSS. Schools can access the module through
https://sites.google.com/site/lausdccss/home/professional-development-modules. Module 2 will be available to
schools in May.

Despite fiscal challenges, AVID, a structured, college preparatory structure, continues to grow in LAUSD. Please note
that for the 2012-13 academic school year, the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Educational Aides
III will no longer be funded centrally. Since the AVID Tutorial is a requirement for AVID certification, it is strongly
recommended that schools allocate funds to support the hiring and training of AVID ED Aides.
Schools will continue to receive their subscriptions to AVID Weekly.

Summer Institute is AVID's annual professional development training where contracted sites learn AVID
methodologies and strategies to successfully implement AVID in their schools. This year, AVID Center will host two
Summer Institutes in San Diego. (San Diego 1 is August 1-3 and San Diego 2 is August 6-8.) Online registration for

AP Exams: Restoration of Federal Funds
The U.S. Department of Education has notified the states that have restored funds to cover the cost of 2012 AP
exams for low-income students. When combined with the increased College Board subsidy, these funds will make all
AP exams $5.00 for your low-income students in May 2012.

AP Potential
AP Potential is available to school sites. AP Potential is a free, Web-based tool that allows schools to generate
rosters of students likely to score a three or better on a given AP exam. Sites are strongly encouraged to utilize AP
Potential to increase participation and success in AP and to ensure AP classes reflect the diversity of their student
population. However, AP Potential should never be used to discourage a motivated student from registering for an
AP course. To access AP Potential, go to appotential.collegeboard.com.
There is no cost for this half-day workshop. The purpose of the AP workshop is to help schools:
 Recognize what data accompanies PSAT/NMSQT® and how to use it
 learn how to access and interpret the Summary of Answers and Skills (SOAS) report
 discover how to use AP Potential® to grow AP® classes
The AP Potential workshops focus on ensuring that the diagnostic, academic, and college-and career-planning
aspects of the exam are fully used by students, teachers, counselors, and site administrators. The use of AP
Potential to identify more low income, first generation college students for academic rigor is central to the goal of
administering the PSAT/NMSQT®. If interested in an AP Potential workshop, contact Arzie Galvez at
AP Course Audit
Advanced Placement (AP) authorization must be obtained before a school uses the “AP” designation on a course
listed on a student’s transcript and in order for the school’s course to appear in the ledger of authorized AP courses
provided for college and university admission offices. For information regarding the guidelines, resource
requirements, and related timeline for the 2012-13 Advanced Placement (AP) Course Audit, see
 August 1, 2012: AP Course Audit administrators begin renewing previously authorized courses for the 2012-13
school year. Online/Distance Learning courses can be added through the School Status page.
 October 15, 2012: Preferred date by which administrators should renew previously authorized courses that are
again offered in the 2012-13 school year to ensure the inclusion of these courses in the initial publication of the
AP Course Ledger in November 2012. Remove teachers not teaching or courses not being taught during the
current school year from the School Status page. Administrators must contact the AP Course Audit Helpline to
remove authorized courses from your school. October 15 is a preferred submission date, not a deadline.
The District will cover the cost of the 2012 PSAT administration for all 10 th graders. The 2012 administration is
Wednesday, October 17, 2012. The District will not cover the cost of a middle school administration. The fee for the
2012 PSAT/NMSQT is $14. The College Board makes fee waivers available to schools for students in eleventh grade
from low-income families who can't afford the test fee.

Intensive Instruction Program Grades 10 to Post 12 th Grade and Valenzuela Settlement Requirement, dated

Beyond the Bell Intervention Professional Development
The Learning Zone offers secondary teachers of English Learners the necessary professional development to teach
the Beyond the Bell (BTB) ESL Intervention curriculum materials for intervention. Schools may order BTB ESL
teacher guides, student materials and pre-post tests at no cost through Beyond the Bell. For more information please

ELAP Weekend Camps were designed to strengthen academic English language use and understanding in science
while having a whole lot of fun in the process. At the end of their weekend, over 93% of students reported feeling
more responsible for taking care of their environment. 95% of students indicated they wanted to go to college and
that getting good grades in school was important to them. Beyond the Bell feels the same way, and can’t wait to take

2012-13 Supplemental Educational Services (SES)
Tentative Timeline: Please be aware that the SES application deadline and program implementation dates will be
changing next school year. Brochures will be mailed to eligible parents on September 30. The first deadline for
parents to submit an application will be October 26, 2012. Tutoring services will start November 15. There will only
be a second application deadline (TBD) if the program does not become oversubscribed by the October 26, 2012,

Healthy Schools Campaign Awards Ceremony is set for May 10, 2012. Healthy Schools Campaign is an educational
campaign that involves lessons about nutrition, healthy habits, and fitness. Beyond the Bell staff has been trained to
implement lessons and activities during Beyond the Bell after schools programs, at the majority of elementary and
middle schools across LAUSD. At the end of the campaign, students participate in a Poster Contest. For more

Latino Art Beat competition is set for May 25, 2012. Latino Art Beat is a national nonprofit arts organization that provides
scholarships to local 11th and 12th grade public school students through its Annual Hispanic Heritage Art
Competition. Latino Art Beat contests are held annually in the cities of Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Miami and

Student Testing and Assessment Unit
The testing window for the 2012 Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program for traditional single-track
schools opens on May 1, 2012. For testing guidelines and procedures, and other critical dates, please check the
2012 CST and CMA Administration Instructions found on the Student Testing and Assessment Unit webpage.
The national, State and District testing calendars will be available on May 7, 2012, through Inside LAUSD. The
calendars were developed by focus groups consisting of principals, coordinators, and teachers from schools

representing the various school calendars. The memorandum is designed to help schools plan their testing

New Kindergarten Age Cut-off for 2012-13
Students who turn five by November 1, 2012, will be eligible for Kindergarten next year. This change was made as a
result of the Kindergarten Readiness Act, also known as Senate Bill No. 1381, which will phase-in the new cut-off
dates. The cut-off date for kindergarten will move one month earlier each year for the next three years. This year
children must turn (5) by November 1, 2012, to enter traditional kindergarten.
Transitional Kindergarten 2012-13
LAUSD will be implementing Transitional Kindergarten (TK) in 2012-13 at our existing elementary school sites.
Enrollment will be prioritized for students who will turn (5) between November 2 through December 2, 2012. TK
Schools will enroll their resident students first and, if space available, will offer seats to LAUSD students who live
outside the TK school’s attendance area. At this time, there will be no expansion of TK programs until 2013-14.
Plan for Early Childhood Education Services 2012-13
Due to funding uncertainties at the District and State levels, there may be some reductions in the number of Early
Education Centers and other preschool programs for next year. However, we will be increasing the number of
licensed California State Preschool and Los Angeles Universal Preschool Programs throughout the District. No
District general funds are required for these programs.

Brokers of Expertise Trainings, sponsored by The California K-12 High Speed Network, a state program funded by the
California Department of Education, will be offering a series of free, half-day trainings on Brokers of Expertise (BOE)
Brokers of Expertise is a project designed to provide California educators with access to thousands of FREE classroom
resources from the Library of Congress, Thinkfinity, Smithsonian Education, the National Science Digital Library, and
many other high-quality content providers. BOE is also a unique community bringing together the diversity of talent and
expertise of teachers across the State. There are four FREE sessions to choose from at the Los Angeles County Office

International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) will hold its national conference this year from June 24 - 27,

NBC LEARN K-12 Online Resource
NBC LEARN K-12 is now available to every teacher, student, and parent in the LAUSD through a partnership
between the University of Phoenix and NBC Learn. NBC News offers unique collections of video resources, primary
sources, historic footage, images, mini-documentaries and text resources designed for use in the K-12 classroom. To
access these resources navigate to http://archives.nbclearn.com from any computer on the LAUSD network for full
access to all videos on NBC Learn. (Registration allows access personalization features.) You can also view the
NBC Learn video tutorial in the video carousel on the homepage for a quick introduction to the key features on the

PBS Learning Media
PBS Learning Media is a free multimedia portal featuring photos, maps, videos and more—all in one place—along with
lesson plans provided by national nonprofits, such as NOVA, NASA, the Library of Congress and the National Archives.
The portal’s content library covers the core curriculum across mathematics, science, reading/language arts, social
studies, health/physical education as well as world languages. PBS Learning Media also features a free set of tools
that allows teachers and students to utilize the content easily.
The Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation (SCSF) supports the President’s national call to “to get that lead back.” The
SCSF was founded on the belief that any desiring individual in need should have the opportunity to further his or her
education. By removing some of the financial burdens associated with going to, surviving in, and graduating from
college, the SCSF plays a vital role in increasing college access and success for many motivated yet underserved
youth and young adults. The SCSF provides individual grants ranging from $1500 to $2500 to every student who
qualifies and reapplies yearly, from admission to graduation. The grant can be used to cover tuition expenses and
related supplemental educational expenses such as books, lab fees, travel, and select costs of living. All Shawn
Carter Scholars are required to “give back” by conducting community service and by serving as mentors to younger,
aspiring Shawn Carter Scholars. Applications for students, ages 18- 25, can be submitted until May 15, 2012. Click

DigiGirlz Day in Los Angeles will be held on Saturday, May 18 , 2012, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Sponsored by
Microsoft, this one-day event is designed for high school girls. During the day, students interact with Microsoft
employees and managers to gain exposure to careers in business and technology. By participating in the Microsoft
DigiGirlz Day, young women can find out about the variety of opportunities available in the high-tech industry and can

Title I Academic Achievement Awards
The California Department of Education (CDE) announced that nine Los Angeles Unified District schools are
recipients of the 2011-12 State Title I Academic Achievement Award (AAA). These awards are given to Title I schools
that have exceeded Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two or more years or are making significant progress toward
proficiency on California's standards for all students and subgroups. The following District schools have earned this

Please note that One Hundred Fifty-Six Street Elementary deserves special recognition since the school has been
identified as a Title I AAA school for four consecutive years.
To meet the criteria for this distinction, the school must demonstrate that all students are making significant progress
toward proficiency on California's academic content standards. Schools must meet all Adequate Yearly Progress
targets for 2010 and 2011, even though targets have increased each year. Schools must also meet their school-wide
API target and the target for all numerically significant subgroups. Additionally, the school's socioeconomically
disadvantaged students must have doubled the achievement targets set for them for two consecutive years.
An awards ceremony for Title I Achieving Schools will be held during the month of May in six different regions
throughout the state. Information regarding the awards ceremony will be sent directly to schools by the CDE.

Federal Program Monitoring (FPM)
The District has entered into a new agreement with the California Department of Education (CDE) regarding the
frequency of FPM reviews and the number of schools that will receive program reviews. The new agreement states
that the District will be reviewed every two years instead of every year.
Beginning in 2012-13, the CDE will conduct a review of 20 schools district wide. The expected timeline of the CDE
visit for the upcoming school year will likely occur around the beginning of the second semester. Until CDE informs
the District of the schools selected to receive on-site reviews, all schools and particularly schools in Program
Improvement, will need to be prepared.

Common Core State Standards in Mathematics
California will be transitioning over the next three years to the recently adopted Common Core State Standards
(CCSS). The CCSS define what students should understand and be able to do in the study of mathematics.
Students who master the CCSS for mathematics will be prepared for college-level courses and possess the skills
necessary for success in today’s workforce.
The CCSS include a focused and coherent set of standards that provide students the opportunity to achieve
proficiency in key topics that are introduced in early grades and built upon in successive years. By focusing on central
concepts necessary for the study of more advanced mathematics in later years, students gain greater depth of
The Kindergarten through 8th grade standards are grouped by grade level and are organized into domains that vary
slightly by grade. The high school standards are organized into conceptual categories. The standards also contain
integrated Standards for Mathematical Practice that describes a set of skills and processes that all students should
develop as part of their study of mathematics.

Algebra 1 EOC New Dates for Middle School Administrations
In order to get the Algebra 1 End-of-Course (EOC) data to award credits and inform student placement in 9 th grade,

Algebra 1 EOC – Placement Middle School students who received a grade of “C” or
Algebra 1 EOC – Placement
Middle School students who received a grade of “C” or better in Algebra 1B or Algebra 1AB and pass the Algebra 1
End-of-Course or earn a score of proficient or advanced on the CST in Algebra 1, are to receive high school
graduation credit for mathematics. These students should be placed in the next mathematics course such as
Geometry or Algebra 2. Schools are requested to check through the Students Programming and Placement
dashboard in myData to ensure that students meeting this requirement are placed correctly.
Mathematics Professional Development Modules for Elementary Schools
The PreK-12 mathematics team is continuing to develop a series of 45-to 60-minute sessions which can be used at
Tuesday bank-time, grade level meetings, or other professional development time. The modules are focusing on
math myths and misconceptions students have and strategies for repairing, and more importantly, avoiding the
learning of these in the first place. The modules include a PowerPoint presentation, a facilitator's guide, a facilitator's
note page, and any necessary handouts. Knowing that most schools are operating with fewer people and those fewer
people have more and more demands on their time, the intended use is for a principal or other school site
instructional leader (coach, AP, teacher, etc.) to have this ready-made PD available via our math website to download
and use, eliminating the need to "put it all together". Our goal is to provide material which is user-friendly and of value
your school. Five modules are now available at www.lausd.net/math under the Professional Development link, with
more to be developed in the coming months.
Algebra I Professional Development Modules for Middle and High School Teachers
Based on CST and Periodic Assessment data, the PreK-12 Mathematics team identified five quadratic standards as a
high-need area of support for our Algebra I students. In response to this need, the team has developed a set of
professional development modules for Middle and High School teachers focusing on concepts of quadratic equations.
These modules focus on assisting students in accessing the language of mathematics, understanding the behavior of
quadratic equations, and ultimately raising student achievement in Algebra I. The modules are now available to
schools for Unit 3 that deals with quadratics at www.lausd.net/math under the Professional Development link.
Periodic Assessments and Progress Monitoring
Periodic assessment calendars for K-5 are located within the 2010-11 Mathematics Instructional Guide. Additionally,
calendars for Kindergarten through Geometry are located under the Assessment link on the PreK-12 Mathematics
website, www.lausd.net/math.
Teachers can create assessments from the item bank or use the short pre-made assessments that include questions
for a specific Standard using the CoreK-12 Progress Monitoring Assessments (PMA’s). The PMA’s can be used to
assess target Standards that have been challenging for students to learn. Teachers will not need to wait for Periodic
Assessments to collect data on possible student needs. Intervention can be done in a timely manner. Access to
these PMA’s can also be made through the mathematics website by clicking on the Assessment tab.
Math Reasoning Inventory - Free Online Formative Assessment Tool
Marilyn Burns has just released her Math Reasoning Inventory (MRI) and launched the related website:
https://www.mathreasoninginventory.com/. This online formative assessment tool is now available free to all
teachers. MRI assesses the numerical proficiency of students and asks questions that the Common Core expects all
middle school students to answer successfully. A face-to-face interview is the core of MRI, and reasoning is the
heart. The tool provides teachers all they need to ask questions and capture students' responses. Information about
the tool and how to sign up for a free account can be found on the MRI website. It's a robust website that provides
information about preparing to use MRI, provides tips for giving MRI interviews, has more than 80 video clips of actual
interviews, shows sample MRI reports, explains the reasoning strategies students need to be numerically proficient,
and more.
6 th -Algebra II Mathematics Instructional Guide Web-based Professional Development
Moodle training and a PowerPoint presentation for Secondary School teachers on the use of the Mathematics
Instructional Guide (MIG) has been created. This online resource walks teachers through the different components
and use of the MIG. The PowerPoint can be used for professional development training during a department meeting
or new teacher meeting. As we no longer send hard copies to schools, the MIG can be found on-line at
www.lausd.net/math http://www.lausd.net/math. Through the use of the Moodle and PowerPoint, teachers are

The instructional guide focuses on developmentally appropriate portions of grade-level standards in the appropriate

The MIND Research Institute offers a research-based tool for teaching and learning mathematics through non-
language based and visual instructional software. This program engages the learner's spatial temporal reasoning

ALEKS On-line Support for Middle and Senior High School Students
ALEKS is a web-based assessment and learning system that differentiates for individual student’s needs, including
students with disabilities. It is aligned to CA state standards. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and
accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics
s/he is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to
ensure that topics learned are also retained. Middle and Senior High Schools are encouraged to utilize this program

Funding Name: 21st Century Community Learning Centers - Elementary & Middle Schools
Eligible Applicants: institutions of higher education, local educational agencies, nonprofit organizations, other
organizations or agencies.
Required Eligibility Criteria: Funds are for schools that meet eligibility requirements for the Title I School-wide
Program. Federal legislation mandates that competitive priority be given to applications serving Title I School-wide
Program schools in need of improvement (Section 1116). To meet the competitive priority, applications must be
jointly submitted by local educational agencies (LEA) receiving funds under Title I, Part A, and community-based
organizations or other public or private, entities.
Funding Description: California's 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) Program provides funding to
create incentives for establishing before-and after-school enrichment programs that partner schools and communities
to provide academic and literacy support and safe, constructive alternatives for youth. Each program must consist of
three elements: academic assistance, educational enrichment, and family literacy services. Programs must operate
during every regular school day and may operate during summer, intersession, or vacation days.

The Sound Body Sound Mind
Established in 1999 by Cindy and Bill Simon, Sound Body Sound Mind is a comprehensive physical fitness program
established to promote self-confidence and healthy lifestyle choices among high school students in the greater Los
Angeles area. Los Angeles Unified School District has received over 60 grants for their schools. Grant applications
for middle schools are now being accepted for the 2012-13 school year. The grant deadline for the next school year
is October 2012. They expect to award nine more middle schools next year. The grant is awarded to schools that

College/Career Preparation
The University of California Office of the President (UCOP) website is currently being updated by the Local District
Counseling Coordinators (LDCC). Assistant Principals Secondary Counseling Services (APSCS) should send
updated lists no later than May 4, 2012, to the LDCC for updating next year’s course offering. Go to the UCOP web
site at www.ucop.edu/doorways/list and print a copy of the school’s 2011-12 course list. Check the school information
and check all the courses. Make any corrections on the current list and send it to your LDCC. New schools
establishing a course list for the first time should contact your LDCC right away. REF-1469.4, Revision of the

Advanced Placement (AP)
The College Board offers several resources for use both within and beyond the classroom on tips to help students get
ready and succeed on the AP Exams day. Students can hone their essay-writing skills with downloadable, previously
administered free-response questions by visiting the student pages at www.collegeboard.com. The Released Exams
allow teachers to prepare students using an actual AP Exam. In addition to providing the multiple-choice questions
and answers, these books describe the process of scoring the free-response questions and include examples of
students’ actual responses, the scoring guidelines, and scoring commentary. The College Board’s student site has
compiled free tips and strategies on study skills and test taking tips for taking the AP Exams in world languages, math
and science, and history and social sciences.
The AP Coordinator at your school site is responsible for training proctors, preparing exam rooms, setting up exam
equipment, and ensuring the secure delivery and storage of exam materials. On exam day, make sure these
materials are delivered to the exam room: printed exam packets and any associated CDs or tapes, answer sheets,
AP student packs, AP Exam instructions script, sign with school code, extra No 2 pencils, extra pens with black or
dark blue ink, extra lined paper for free response, stapler, extra calculators, watch for proctor; each room should have
two (2) timepieces, signs for the door – one to read “Exam in Progress” and the other one “Cell phones are prohibited
in the testing room”
Many coordinators find it helpful to complete the student ID information in a pre-exam session for students. At some
schools, the parent association provides snacks before or after the exams as a treat for the students.

Student Work Permit Issuance During Summer Break
Please direct any students who need a work permit during summer break to the Work Experience Education Office
located at the Beaudry Central Office (333 South Beaudry Avenue, 25 th Floor, Los Angeles, CA 90017). We will
process student work permits from June 1, 2012, to August 15, 2012, (depending on the school’s summer vacation
calendar). Please remind students that the work permits are temporary and will expire August 20, 2012; your school
can issue permanent ones when the students come back from break. In addition, please let your students know that
they need to bring a completed work permit application, current school ID with birth date on it (if the ID does not have
a birth date, then they need to also bring proof of their birth date). For more information, contact the Work Experience

LAUSD-DWP Student Internship Opportunities
The Department of Water and Power (DWP) and the Work Experience Education office will have internship openings
for students across the school district. The name of this program is the Youth Services Academy (YSA) and it has
been around since 1990. Our office will start recruiting students in May for them to start interning in July 2012.
Students will be interning with DWP personnel (i.e. engineers, architects, designers, supervisors, clerical, etc.) at the
DWP Building in Downtown Los Angeles. Students will work Monday to Thursday from 1:00-5:00 p.m. and attend a
Work Experience Education Class on Fridays from 1:00-5:00 p.m. Students will be paid $8.50 an hour for work and
earn credits for Work Experience Education. The Work Experience class is a requirement – students will receive five
to ten credits per semester. This program is not only for the summer, it is continuous until the student graduates from
high school with an option to continue to work up to the end of the student’s first semester in college.
Participants in the YSA Program Requirements
1. Senior class of 2013 attending a LAUSD high school
2. 2.0 minimum GPA
3. Right to Work documents – social security card, photo identification and birth certificate.
4. Afternoons must be open – report to work and attend class from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
5. Reliable transportation to Downtown Los Angeles
6. Commitment to the program from July 2012 to June 2013 (December 2013 if student attends a local college).

Issuance of Student Work Permits
During the school year, each school serving students in Grades 9 to 12 needs to have a certificated staff member
assigned to issue student work permits. The certificated staff member needs to meet at least one of the following
possess a single-subject teaching credential, who must be teaching at least one work experience education class,
possess a pupil personnel services (PPS) credential and/or
be a current administrator who has a B1-8 form filed in our office.
To issue student work permits, the B1-1 and B1-4 forms need to be used. In addition, a copy of current ID needs to
be copied and filed along with the aforementioned forms (i.e. school, DMV, passport, INS/Green Card, any
government-issued ID, etc.). If there is no birth date on the ID, then a birth certificate or other official form needs to be
secured to prove the date of birth since student work permit information is based on age. If you need training and/or

Work Experience Education allows students to receive high school credit if they are legally employed after school. Part
of the process to grant credit(s) is that the student meets once a week with their work experience coordinator to go over

New schools that are scheduled to open in September 2012 should have submitted a Request for WASC Affiliation
form prior to April 30, 2012, in order to schedule a fall visit, and no later than September 30, 2012, to schedule a
spring visit. There is a $150.00 application fee that OCISS will pay. When you submit your application, attach a
memo stating that OCISS will pay the application fee (send a copy of the memo to Janice Davis so that we can follow-
up with the payment). As a reminder, new high schools should open with only 9 th , 10 th and/or 11 th graders in order to
give the school time to prepare for the accreditation process. If your school is opening with 12 th graders, please
contact Janice Davis ASAP so that she can review the steps that need to be completed to ensure you have an

Graduation Participation
Seniors that do not pass one or more sections of the CAHSEE are not allowed to participate in their graduation
ceremony. Students are required to meet State and District course and credit requirements, meet additional non-
course requirements and successfully pass both sections of the CAHSEE to qualify for a High School Diploma.
Remind seniors that if they take the May administration of the CAHSEE, the results will not be available in time for
them to participate in the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2012. After completion of intervention classes and
upon successfully passing both sections of the CAHSEE, students will be able to participate in the next graduation
ceremony that is scheduled. For Students with Disabilities, please refer to REF-5452, CAHSEE Exemption and
Waiver Process for Students with Disabilities, May 11, 2011.
Supplemental Assignment Differentials
The method of allocating activity assignment resources for 2012-13 will remain the same as 2011-12. This allocation
will be based on enrollment. The allocation of activity assignment resources to non Per Pupil school sites will be
based on total enrollment in Grades 6-12, including special education and magnet center students at middle, senior
high and span schools. The allocation of activity assignment resources to Per Pupil school sites is included in the Per
Pupil Funding Model.
Sites will use the resource allocation to fund the number of supplemental activity assignments within their resource
allocation – note change in allocation - $3.00 per student for middle schools and $4.00 per student for senior high
schools. Schools will be held accountable for overdrafts. BUL-3856.3, Guidelines for Supplemental Assignment
Differentials, dated August 17, 2011, is being updated to reflect the changes.

Mandatory Professional Development for Teachers
The Division of Special Education and the Language Acquisition Branch are sponsoring mandatory professional
development for special education teachers of students in Grades 6-12 with mild/moderate disabilities participating in
special day program (SDP) classes, and students in Grades K-12 with moderate/severe disabilities participating in
SDP classes. This professional development will focus on providing English Language Development (ELD) core
instruction and specially designed academic instruction in English (SDAIE) strategies for content instruction in the
classroom. Sessions are scheduled from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and will be held at regional locations. Teachers can
register on Learning Zone.
Last Chance for Technology Tools for Success
New sessions of Technology Tools for Success: A Professional Development Opportunity for K-12 Special Education
are being offered to special education teachers on limited weekdays and weekends in April, May, and June 2012.
This training is open to K-12 special education teachers who work with students with disabilities. Teachers who
participate in this professional development will receive a Dell Inspiron Netbook. Sessions are scheduled from 8:00
a.m. – 11:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at regional locations during the week and at Frank Del Olmo Elementary

Homeless Student Survey
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act requires the annual reporting of identified homeless students by
nighttime residence. The Homeless Student Survey is due at the end of May each school year. Schools shall follow
the protocols of the Homeless Student Survey Memorandum disseminated yearly by the Division of Planning and
Assessment in order to accurately count their homeless students. Students who have been identified as homeless at
any time between July 1, 2011, and June 30, 2012, should be included on this roster. This would include students
who are currently housed.

Review of Attendance Plans
Schools should review and update their Attendance and Dropout Prevention Plan in preparation for the upcoming
school year. The plan should include strategies that support a positive school climate, a school-wide attendance
incentive program, and plans to support students in transitional grades (5 th , 6 th or 8 th ) and in the grade levels with the
highest rates of student absenteeism. Students with attendance issues should be identified early in the school year
so that appropriate and timely interventions can be provided.

State Graduates and Dropout Lists
Principals shall ensure that a team exists to recover students on the State Graduates and Dropout Lists. A student
who is not enrolled in school will be counted as a dropout at the last school of attendance. Dropouts reported in the
current year will impact the school’s graduation rate for AYP over the next four years. These lists can be downloaded
from SIS three times per year.

The student selection process for the NCLB-PSC and PWT programs has been completed. Rosters of students
participating in these programs will be mailed to all receiving schools in early May. Enrollment seats for participating
students were reserved during the E-Cast process. Parents of program participants have been notified and instructed
to contact the receiving school to obtain information regarding enrollment and orientation dates. Questions regarding

Indian Education Program
The Indian Education Program’s Formula Grant for 2012-13 is due to the Office of Indian Education in Washington
D.C. by May 4, 2012.
The Annual Art Show was held at the Autry National Center. Student projects are left up for viewing by parents,
guardians and friends on Sunday, June 10, 2012, when our Annual Student Recognition Program is held. Students
will tour the Autry Museum and workshops will be held for part of the day. All transportation costs are paid by our
federal grant for this worthwhile activity. Additionally, the program pays for substitutes in order for Program Staff to
accompany their students to the Autry.

LAUSD Spanish Equivalency Examination
The LAUSD Spanish Equivalency Examination is a tool to help schools provide students in Grades 8-12, including
those who may have acquired Spanish without formal instruction, an opportunity to demonstrate proficiency in
Spanish and establish equivalency to up to two years of Spanish coursework. The results of the Spanish Equivalency
Examination are used for appropriate placement of qualifying students into the Spanish for Spanish Speakers study

San Francisco State University Chinese Flagship Program
Teachers of Chinese can share this information with high school students interested in continuing the study of
Chinese language (with any major) in college.
The San Francisco State University (SFSU) Chinese Flagship Program is a federally-funded initiative under The
Language Flagship, which promotes intensive language training for undergraduates to help them reach professional
proficiency in their chosen domain. Open to all SFSU-enrolled students by application, the Chinese Flagship Program
provides the following benefits to selected students: 1) At SFSU: Special Flagship language and content area
courses, one-on-one conversation tutoring, regular standardized assessment and individualized faculty advising; 2)
Study and work in China: Flagship students are eligible to receive funding to support one summer intensive language
study program and a Capstone Year program in China that includes one term of direct-enrollment study at prestigious
Nanjing University and a four-month professional internship in China in their field of interest. Flagship student alumni
are expected to reach ACTFL Superior level proficiency by the time of Capstone completion, with full working
capabilities in Chinese professional settings.

Computerized Assessment of Proficiency (CAP) K-12 Assessment Project
The Computerized Assessment of Proficiency (CAP) K-12 Assessment is a project among San Francisco State
University (SFSU), the University of Oregon Chinese Flagship Program, and the University of Oregon’s Center for
Applied Second Language studies (CASLS). The CAP K-12 Assessment Project is designed to support California’s
school district administrators, instructors and learners of Chinese. This spring (beginning of fall semester is possible,
as well) SFSU is providing a new no-cost language assessment opportunity to Chinese programs in the state – the
Computerized Assessment of Proficiency (CAP) is an online reading and listening test developed by CASLS that
delivers both individual student and comprehensive program assessment data with an emphasis on proficiency-based
instruction and curriculum collaboration. Teacher of Chinese who participants in the project and carry out the online
assessment in their classrooms will qualify to attend a special half-day assessment workshop at SFSU to review and
discuss state and regional proficiency benchmark data, as well as receive resource materials specially tailored for
Chinese language instruction at their teaching level. SF State Chinese Flagship will be able to cover travel expenses

“Vive la langue française” event at Ramón C. Cortines School for the Visual and Performing Arts
On March 7, Professeur Stephane Joyet and his students of French at Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and
Performing Arts put together an inspiring performance, “Vive la langue française”. The spectacle, attended by
members of the community, students, teachers, and administrators, was a fine example of integrating education in

Teaching French Language and Culture
The Alliance Française workshops teach the participants how to motivate students in learning French language
through culture, authentic documents (commercials, YouTube, radio shows, magazines, TV shows), activities and
challenges. Participants explore various ways to teach, and to assist students in listening, reading, and
communicating in French language. Students are familiarized with spoken French, idiomatic expressions,
conjugation, grammatical points, and culture. Presenters provide free online resources in French language, and
provide the lesson plans and others. Our workshops are applicable for high school and university students. For more

23 rd Annual Summer Seminar for Language Teachers
The California Language Teachers’ Association and the California World Language Project are pleased to present,
after a five year hiatus, the 23 rd Annual Summer Seminar for Language Teachers. The theme for this summer’s
seminar is “Standards-based Instruction in the Context of 21 st Century Skills.” The seminar runs July 22–27, 2012
and will be located on the campus of UC Santa Barbara. Fees cover registration, lodging, and meals: $600 - $750.

National Heritage Language Resource Center Five-Day Workshop
This FREE five-day workshop is designed to address issues at the heart of heritage language teaching, including the
differences between teaching L2 and HL learners, differentiated instruction, learner strategies, assessment, using the
5Cs in heritage instruction, and other topics. This Startalk-funded workshop targets teachers of heritage learners of
Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. However, additional spaces are
available for instructors of other K-16 programs (Korean, Spanish, etc.). The workshop will be held on the UCLA

UCLA High School Language Summer Courses
This summer, UCLA will offer language classes for high school students who speak, understand and/or hear Amharic,
Arabic, Armenian, Persian and Russian at home and want to learn to read, write and expand their listening and
speaking skills.
Classes will be held June 26 to July 27 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9am-1pm. Classes cost $150.
All levels of heritage language students are accepted. In addition, this year we will also offer a beginning Russian
