I can also be found on Skype at cgjeffreyscom210, and we can also set up a time to speak on the phone if a Skype video or text chat will not suffice. Course Description: COM 210. (3) Business and Professional Speech. Preparation and performance of specific speech forms appropriate to business and professional forums, including conferences and interviews. Course Objectives: Develop poise and confidence in business communication situations Develop knowledge and practical understanding of communication processes, principles and models in history and the modern organization Develop skills necessary for an effective job interview Learn to deliver effective elevator speeches and presentations in the organizational setting Apply course information and skills to personal experiences in your career setting Use research and critical thinking skills to construct effective persuasive and informative presentations Understand the ethical dimensions of communication practices in organization Required Text: Cheryl Hamilton. Communicating for Results: A Guide for Business and the Professions. 9th ed. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth. Course Work and Evaluation: I will do the primary evaluation of course work. Standards for evaluation will be spelled out for each activity. Each activity and its weighting in overall course grading are listed below. Note that regardless of ones total points after the final exam, students will only receive an F as their final grade unless all three speeches have been completed. Grading Scale: 450 500 points = A 400 449 points = B 350 399 points = C 300 349 points = D 000 299 points = F Assignments: Midterm Exam - 100 Final Exam - 100 Informative Speech - 100 Persuasive Speech 100 Homework - 50 Networking Speech - 20 Informative Speech Outline - 15 Persuasive Speech Outline - 15

COM 210 Business and Professional Speech Clay Jeffreys Assignments: Midterm and Final Exam: Examinations covering materials discussed in class. The midterm exam covers the information from the textbook and lectures from the first half of the semester. The final exam covers the information from the midterm to the end of the semester and some material from the first half of the class. Exams taken through Angel. 100 points each (200 total points). Informative Presentation: Students will give a 5-8 minute presentation providing information, foundation, details, etc. about a product, idea or concept. This will be phase 1 of the two major presentations in the class. The persuasive presentation will build off of the informative presentation. An outline is required and all outlines are due prior to the presentation. Late outlines result in no points for the assignment, and are still required to give the speech. No outline results in an incomplete presentation worth 0 points 100 points. Note this assignment must be completed in order to pass the class. Persuasive Presentation: Individuals will give a 6-9 minute presentation pitching a product, idea, or concept. The subject matter of the speech will be the same as the informative presentation. The goal of this speech is to provide a call to action to motivate others to participate/buy/etc. the subject matter of the presentation. An outline is required and all outlines are due prior to the presentation. Late outlines result in no points for the assignment, and are still required to give the speech. No outline results in an incomplete presentation worth 0 points 100 points. Note this assignment must be completed in order to pass the class. Networking Speech: Students will present an impromptu speech that I am describing as a Networking Speech. The Networking Speech should be 60-90 seconds in which the presenter goes more in-depth into their job. The speaker should provide information on who they are/what they do, examples/stories of clients, good leads, etc. More appropriate in formal networking situations 20 points. Note this assignment must be completed to pass the class. Other pertinent information: Course format: COM 210 will be a distance-learning course. All lectures will be available through Angel Learning at the beginning of their assigned week and available through the end of the semester. Look for the lectures under the Lessons tab in Angel Learning. Exams will also be taken through Angel Learning. The presentations will be given through Skype. It will be imperative that each student find and friend request me cgjeffreyscom210 is my Skeyp account user name. Students are required to have private access to a webcam, microphone, etc. No one will give a speech from a public computer lab.

COM 210 Business and Professional Speech Clay Jeffreys Outlines: Outline for the presentations are due prior to giving the presentation. Refer to the course calendar in Angel for due dates. Late outlines result in no points for the assignment, and are still required to give the speech. An outline must be presented before giving the presentation - no exceptions. Outlines are worth 15 points each (total of 30 points). Homework: There will be 5 homework assignments throughout the semester. They will be due at the end of the month when they were assigned. Each assignment is worth 10 points each (for a total of 50 points). Make-ups: Absences on presentation/speech days for medical reasons will require a written doctors excuse. The presentation/speech will be made up during a time of my discretion meaning students will need to be prepared at any given time. Presentations/Speeches needing to be made up for any other reason will also be delivered during a time of my discretion with a 25% reduction in the overall grade for the assignment. Academic Honesty: Everyone in this course will receive two copies of the Academic Honesty Policy of the Department of Communications. Students are required to read, review, sign and submit one copy of the Academic Honesty Policy of the Department of Communications. Students should retain the additional copy for their reference during the semester. If you are unwilling or unable to follow the policy, you should consider dropping this course and contacting the Chair of the Department of Communications, Dr. Gregory Pitts, 256-765-4260 or gpitts@una.edu. Tentative Class Schedule Refer to the calendar tab in the Angel Learning system for the COM 210 class. Do know that those two emails are not linked, so do not email me at one address thinking it will go to both. Withdrawal from the course If you plan to withdraw from the class, keep in mind that I cannot do this for you. You need to contact the Registrars office at registrar@una.edu. Let them know you plan to drop my class. If you do NOT drop the class and are still registered at the end of the semester, I will grade you on the work completed in the course. - to withdraw with a W, complete the withdrawal process by March 9, 2012 - to withdraw with a WP, WF, complete the process by April 18, 2012
