English-Communication II Formative Reading Assessments and Interventions: Protocol Our focus this year was to focus on individual struggling

g students and to develop appropriate and accurate formative assessments. Due to the fact that only members of our PLC team piloted these assessments this year, we look to collect more comprehensive, level-wide data on all sophomores next year if possible. (Draft) Quarter #1: Reading Skill Focus Summarization and Main Idea Instruction -Introduce and practice summarization and main idea skills during House of Mango Street Somebody Wanted But So method, etc. -Model skills -Show students the best student work -Introducing vocab skills apply to SSR books (picking out words with certain prefix/suffix, etc.) Formative Assessment -Practice assessment Alicia Who Sees Mice chapter -1st assessment of summary after House on Mango Street Monkey Garden chapter Quarter #2: Reading Skill Focus Summarization and Main Idea Re-Teaching -Reteach reading skills during Of Mice and Men -Practice by summarizing chapters -Practice assessment Crooks refusing to go to farm after confrontation with Curleys Wife -2nd assessment of summary at end Of Mice and Men George shooting Lennie scene -Those without 9 out of 12 get assessment back with comments -Have 1 chance to redo (try to do assessment on Thursday-retakes on Friday) Intervention -If student does not receive 9 then recommend: -STRIVE -Enhanced Resource Study Hall -Report results and need for intervention to counselors Quarter #3: Reading Skill Focus Vocabulary Instruction -3rd quarter Vocab with Montana -Practice using prefix, suffix, context in SSR book

-Steps in Vocab Identification: Direct definition; antonym; synonym; signal phrases/terms; general knowledge/background knowledge/common sense; use of character traits to trace definitions of words; prefix/suffix; roots/familiar words -Practice assessment using excerpt from Part 1 -Final assessment should be summarization, vocab and inference Quarter #4: Reading Skill Focus Inference -Practice inference skills mini-lesson -Practice formative assessment including all three targeted reading skills identified struggling students -Provide interventions as needed -Developed summative assessment for targeted skills -Provided additional, follow-up interventions as needed

SMART Goal: 75% of students will score a 75% or higher on Quarter 4 summative reading assessment. Final Data Tally: -McGrath 3 sections 80 students 69 out of 80 students received score of 75% on summative assessment - 86% pass rate -Greaney 4 sections 115 students 94 out of 115 students received score of 75% on summative assessment - 82% pass rate -Melie/Larsen/Holland 2 sections 42 students 32 out of 42 students received score of 75% on summative 76% pass rate

SMART Goal Final Results: Approximately 80% of students scored a 75% or higher on Quarter 4 summative reading assessment We met our SMART Goal!!!
