PHYSICS 116

FINAL EXAMINATION
3.6.2000, Lab 16 11.00-13.30

1. (10 pts.) Calculate the resistance needed to construct an ammeter with 5 A maximum reading by using the
galvanometer which has an internal resistance of 10 O, and 10 mA full scale deflection. Draw a circuit to
measure an unknown current flowing through the resistance R connected to a power supply of 5 Volts, and
explain how you measure the current.

2. a. (6 pts.) Explain the eddy current briefly. Draw the experimental setup you used in your experiment and
show all forces (defined by vectors) present in the system.
b. (9 pts.) For the eddy current experiment, If the rotating disk has a constant frictional torque, show that the
terminal speed, v is
where c is a constant and t
f
is a constant frictional torque of the rotating disk. (Hint: remember Faradays
law)

3. a (4 pts.) Using the given data, taken by L-R experiment, explain briefly which data Va or Vb refers to the
potential drop on R.

f(kHz)= 5 10 15 20 25
Va (V)= 3.7 3.0 2.2 2.0 1.5
Vb (V)= 1.6 2.8 3.0 3.7 3.8

b. (5 pts.) Discuss the reactance (X
L
) and the inductance (L) of a coil.
c. (6 pts.) Determine L of a coil by using the data in part a). Take R= 5 kO (disregard all measurement errors)

4. a. (6 pts.) Explain shortly the aim of the Stefan-Boltzmann experiment.
b. (9 pts.) In the experiment, do you observe expected characteristics for low temperatures (i.e. T< 150
o
C).
Why?

5. a. (10 pts.) The positions of the intensity maxima obtained in a double slit experiment are listed below.
Using this data and given constants, determine the distance between the slits, both have the same width of 50
m. The distance between the slits and the screen, L is 400 cm, and the wavelength of the light, is 600 nm.

b. (5 pts.) Calculate the slit width a if you observe 11 interference fringes within the central maxima for data
given above, exactly.

6.a. (6 pts.) Prove that the trajectory of electrons between the deflection plates is independent of Va in the
first part of e/m experiment, if the same potential Va is applied to the deflection plates. What happens if the
electrons are accelerated by only a constant fraction of accelerator potential.

b. (9 pts.) Assume that you observed the pattern shown below in the magnetic deflection part of the
experiment. Determine the percentage of potential energy transferred onto electrons within the accelerator.

7. a.(6 pts.), If we increase the source potential of the photodiode in the LED experiment, how does it change
the efficiency of the LED.
b. (9 pts.) What would be the voltage across R
diode
in the experiment, if the efficiency of a LED is equal to
0.01? The voltage on the LED and the load resistance R
LED
is 2.5 V and 1.5 V, respectively. Assume that all
photons emitted by the LED are absorbed by the photodiode, and the Quantum efficiency of the photodiode
can be taken as 1. (Hint: you can use the circuit of the experiment.)
