HOW TO GROW SLIPPER ORCHIDS

LIGHT With the aid of minerals taken up by the roots and light absorbed from the sun, green leaves produce energy to grow and flower. This process is called photosynthesis, Paphs require a much lower light intensity that cattleyas, dendrobiums or cymbidiums for this to occur at optimum level. An easy light test is to move a hand about 50cm above the foliage on a sunny day. If a noticeable shadow is cast on the leaves, more shade should be applied. Most people who say they dont have much luck with slippers keep them too bright or grow them in too big a pot. The leaves should always be a lush green. TEMPERATURE The optimum temperature for most Paphs is around 26C during the day with a 10C drop at night and relative humidity of around 50% - 60%. Paphs are however, quite tolerant and extremes of 40C and just short of freezing for short periods will do no harm. Prolonged extremes will slow down growth. Draughts or strong winds, especially on hot days will desecrate the leaves. POTTING It is worth remembering that most Paphs die from over-potting. The smallest pot possible should be used to comfortably fit the roots. Overly long roots are best spiralled into the pot by turning the pot until the roots are wound in. Frequent potting is beneficial (no more than twice a year), Healthy, mature plants can confidently be left in the same pot for two years. Suitable materials for potting include bark, polystyrene, fine shells, water crystals, and gravel. Particle size should not exceed 10mm of any ingredient. I like the bark component to be at least 50% of the volume. It is important for the mix to be moist but never wet when potting. WATER & FEEDING Like most plants these orchids like a good drenching to thoroughly wet the whole pot, rather than a little bit every day. During very hot periods they may need watering every other day preferably with rain water. During cold, damp weather limit watering to every seven to ten days. The addition of half recommended strength fertilizer (of any good brand including seaweed fertilizers) with every second watering should keep them growing well. DELIVERY & PACKING Packing and postage is $15.00 anywhere in Australia. Orders of $300.00 or more are freight free. All plants and seedlings are sent bare root. They are well packed and suffer practically no set-back. There is no sense in paying freight for heavy pots and compost. Most plants get dislodged or loosened in the pots in transport and it is far better to grow them in your own mix anyway.
