Record Attested at Chatham, Ontario. TOS No. 1 DD (AF) placed on command and attached to 12 BTC (AF) for all purposes (records only)
Unit No 1 DD
Direct Translation Attested at Chatham, Ontario. Taken On Strength No 1 District Depot (Active Force) placed on command and attached to 12 Basic Training Center (Active Force) for all purposes (records only)
English Translation and Remarks He signed the dotted line and Joined up in Chatham and was taken on strength of No 1 District Depot (Active Force) in London, Ontario Taken on Strength means that he was added to the Unit that he now has arrived at. NRMA means National Resources Mobilization Act of 1940. This was the Act of Parliament that gave the Canadian Army the authority to recruit to war time strength. For all purposes, means exactly that, he can be employed for anything that unit wants to employ him at, which is to train him to be a soldier No. 12 Canadian Army (Basic) Training Centre was located in Chatham (1940-1945), this was a boot camp or recruit camp, where new recruits were taught to be SOLDIERS.
Records Only, this probably means that he wasnt really a member of No 1 District Depot, this was just paperwork until training Center was ready for the next input of recruits TOS 12 BTC (AF) on attachment from No. 1 DD (AF) for all purposes Chatham, Ont 12 BTC Take On Strength 12 Basic Training Center (Active Force) on attachment from No 1 District Depot (Active Force) for all purposes Georges records are a little bit confusing over the next 4 items. He seems to go back and forth between units over a number of days. But his training record clearing states that he was at Basic training in Chatham from the 20 May 1941 until the 16 Aug 1941. So the next three movements may have been just for his training. Struck Off Strength means he was removed from that Units organization. George now went to London, Ont George is now in London, Ont on attachment. On attachment means that he has been lent to the unit, his home unit is still 12 BTC in Chatham. On Command is similar to attachment. He has now been lent again to another unit. He was attending a Trade School for his new trade as a Machinist. as it say, George is attached for training.

George now arrives to finish his training in the Army Service Corps. After he passes this course he then is entitled to where the RCASC Hat Badge and markings on his uniform as a member of the Corps. The CASF was the name they gave the Canadian Army during the entire war, so everyone was part of the Canadian Army Special Force. Overseas. He arrived on Tuesday, 23 June 1942 at Clyde, UK When George arrived in England, he was sent to a Army Service Corps Reinforcement Unit. Canada set up Reinforcement Units for all the trades (Infantry, Armoured, Engineers, Army Service Corps etc). When a new man arrived, he was assigned to the Reinforcement Unit. He then continued to work and train with this unit (just like any other Army unit) and from here he would be sent to the first unit that required another man. The Canadian Army Service Corps Reinforcement Unit was located in the Bordon-Aldershot area of England. Aldershot is South West of London, towards Southampton
George now if officially qualified as a Driver of wheeled vehicles and as we found out by the newspaper article he volunteered for this training. George is now being sent to his first unit. He leaves the Reinforcement Unit and is heading for the 3 Canadian Armoured Brigade Company George now joins his first unit, which is a Transport Unit, that supports the 3rd Canadian Armoured Brigade (which is a Tank Brigade)

This is exactly what the line above says. It may have been a different clerk filling it in. The Army LIVES on red tape and forms George was granted leave and they paid him, gave him money for allowances which is money to pay for hotels and rations (food). The plus 48 hours was probably travel time, to allow him to get somewhere (probably London) and back from his leave. Meal Allowance is they gave him money so he could eat, while he was on leave George got a pay increase to a $1.50 a day George has also now been promoted as a Acting Lance Corporal. Normally they made promotions acting to see if the man could handle it, and if yes, they would confirm him in the rank. Lance Corporal was the first supervisory rank in the Canadian Army. He would now wore 1 chevron on his uniform Granted more leave with travel time and meal allowance George has been lent to 1 Canadian Base Ordnance Depot. Because he is in hospital, he is removed from the Unit he was with and assigned to the Canadian Army Service Corps Reinforcement Unit again. He is held on the books of this unit untill he is fit for service. They then can post him back to a front line

Struck Off Strength to X-3 List Royal Canadian Army Service Corps Taken On Strength from 4 Canadian Armoured Brigade Company
George must have been sick or injured and taken to a Field Ambulance or hospital. The X-3 list was a list of soldiers who were sick of injured on active, front line duty. X-3 meant - all ranks evacuated on medical grounds behind Regimental Aid Posts When he was better, he returned to his unit, but his position had been filled, so he was supernumerary, meaning he was an extra man on the Units nominal roll George was allowed to go back to England on 9 days leave with his meals paid for A war establishment position has opened up in his unit, and now he is placed in that position and is no longer an extra man to the unit.
