By Patrick Maitland Editor-Street Hype few months after completing a year prison term for endangering the welfare of a 13-yearold boy in Brooklyn, Jamaicanborn actor Lacell Girlie Parnell, 42 has decided to return to his homeland and avoid formal deportation. As a result of the charges, Parnell lost his green card resident status and was scheduled for deportation to Jamaica, but he was allowed to remain at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility at Port Isabel Service Processing Center in Texas while he fights a medical malpractice lawsuit against a doctor and the Brooklyn Medical Center for the death of his wife. Parnell recently collected a $95, 000 settlement from the Brooklyn Medical Center for the wrongful death of his wife in 2004. The case against the doctor is still not settled, but it was a waste of time for me to be sitting in jail with nothing to do. Based on the advice of my lawyers, I decided to return home and continue to seek justice and compensation for my family. The judge has agreed to have my participation via satellite, Parnell noted. Parnell told St reet Hy p e that he was met on arrival in Montego Bay, Jamaica on April 23, 2012 by scores of family members and fans. I am very happy to be home and to get on with my career of entertaining people. Within the next two months I will be launching the play Girlie Get Visa and in December Girlie Get Deported, he added.

Parnell, who is now listed as a sex offender in New York State also stressed that he learned his lesson and was now very focused and determined to remain positive but careful about negative people who would set traps to destroy my character and reputation. He was arrested on May 29, 2008 on five counts of sexual abuse in the 2nd degree; two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of aggravated harassment in the 2nd degree involving the 13-year-old boy. Parnell was found guilty in Brooklyns District Court and was sentenced in July 2009 to two years in prison at the Rikers Island Jail, but was later transfered to the Port Isabel Service Processing Center in Texas, which holds detainees of the ICE, whose immigration status, or citizenship, has not been officially determined or who are awaiting repatriation.

We are honoring mothers, celebrating motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers in society. Despite the challenges including gender discrimination, our women and mothers are performing very well in education, social, economic and other human development standards. Only 30 percent of blacks are now married. Black median family income was just over $41,000 in 2008, the lowest in the United States of any racial group, while single black women with children earned a median annual income of $25,958. It is no surprise that one out of five black families lives in poverty. More than 40 percent of black families headed by a single mom are poor. On the positive side, as more African-American women are dren. Especially among AfricanAmerican women, health care, physical and mental abuse, financial hardship, poor interpersonal relationships and communication issues continue to be among the setbacks. In a society that socializes so heavily around food and alcoholic beverages, too many of our women are dying from preventable diseases, social ills and causes. Heart disease, obesity, hypertension, HIV/AIDS, diabetes and physical violence are all preventable. There are more women than men. Nearly one out of every three black households (29 percent) are

If the black family is to achieve social and economic freedom and success, men and fathers must do more for their family. Providing financial support is very important, but mothers need the presence of men or fathers at home. We need good mothers to enhance the social and economic well-being of the AfricanAmerican community.

hen it comes to love, nothing is off limits, except your relationship itself. Love requires time, patience, honesty and also privacy. Nothing destroys a relationship faster than rumors, hear says and as we say in Jamaica, Carry go bring come! The demise of that perhaps once beautiful, might be the relationship of my life situation, will weigh heavily on your heart as you instantly recognize that gossip and, of course your overzealousness all contributed to the destruction of your relationship. Should you then not tell anyone if you are dating someone? Hide it from everyone but your immediate family? Make mention of it only if and when you are walking down the aisle? Maybe you need to, in order to keep your relationship intact! Most people would say whatever happens between a man and a woman is their business, and I tend to agree. There have been so many situations, even recent ones I might add, where my significant other, (S.K.) and I have experienced some bumpy roads in our relationship. Negative talk and destructive rumors nearly killed our beautiful union. It, of course, has led to miscommunication, vexation and caused a definite rift between the two of us. The rumors swirling around about my dating life and the mystic about S.K. has allowed the rumor mill to run amok. But Sandy, you dont know that you are a sort of celebrity figure now (of sorts) and everything that you do people will want to know about it? a friend of mine said to me recently. I think that you are living underneath a rock if you cant see that, he went on to say. Figure or no figure, I just want my relationship to be kept private, I answered. Not bloody likely, my friend replied. However, once all the hoopla and pomp and circumstance were done with, and we actually sat down and spent time alone together, all the negative feelings went through the window. No longer did we have unresolved issues between us, unsolved and left to fester some more. The

strain of the last few weeks seemed ridiculous and unnecessary once we were able to just concentrate on us and not the outside world. Fortunately, what I learnt from this situation is that when given an opportunity to just relate to each other, with no one else interfering in their love life, a man and a woman might have a chance at creating a beautiful relationship. Without the negativity, the jealousness, the overzealous onlookers making statements behind our backs, we seemingly have a shot of making this relationship work. Hopefully, we will not be included in the statistics, put out recently by randomhistory.com, that suggests that most couples break-up around three to five months dating.

This statistic, of course, does not make it a done deal for me as to how long this relationship will last, but it does work as a guide of sorts for us, as we attempt to form a long, lasting relationship. The wonderful feeling of knowing that your partner wants to be there with you of course is an amazing feeling and many say that this should be enough, but of course this is not so. Relationships are tough, difficult to maintain and anything that you have to do to ensure the success of that union, minus

killing anyone or course, should be done. Privacy, I believe, should be number one in a relationship, as this gives you the opportunity to really unite with one person on an emotional level. As difficult as this may seem, even for Sandy Daley, this will be done. At the end of the day, when I and S.K. are alone together with no one else but us to think about, I see the potential, as you will too when you make your situation a priority and no one elses business but your own.

Irvington, New Jersey: mother and daughter from New Jersey each were sentenced to 24 months in prison for participating in a scheme involving New Jersey properties that caused mortgage lenders to release more than $1.9 million in loans obtained by fraud. Patricia Smith, 57, and Jamilah Smith, 31, of Irvington, N.J pleaded guilty in October 2011 to two counts of wire fraud contained in the superseding indictment against them. They entered their guilty pleas on the fifth day of trial before U.S. District Judge Jerome B. Simandle, who also imposed the sentences in Camden federal court. Co-conspirator Carol Ashley, 58, Las Vegas, also pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud that day, and was sentenced to six months of house arrest with electronic monitoring. Patricia and Jamilah Smith served as "straw buyers" to purchase two condominiums each in North Wildwood, N.J. The straw buyers had good credit scores but lacked the financial resources to qualify for mortgage loans. The Smiths' accomplices created false documents such as fake bank statements, W-2 forms and pay stubs to make the straw buyers appear more creditworthy than they actually were. Ashley falsely verified to the lenders that Patricia Smith worked for Ashley's company, Exclusive Entertainment Production, based in the Los Angeles area. Once the loans were approved, the mortgage lenders sent the loan proceeds in connection with the real estate closings. The defendants' accomplices used a portion of the proceeds to pay the Smiths for their roles. In addition to the prison term, Judge Simandle sentenced Patricia and Jamilah Smith each to serve five years of supervised release. Ashley was ordered to serve three years of supervised release. Judge Simandle ordered to Patricia Smith to forfeit $82,746.80 and pay $892,168.01 in restitution, and ordered Jamilah Smith to forfeit $65,047.70 and pay $647,290.13 in restitution.

Dear Editor: n an article dated February 19-29, 2012, in Street Hype Newspaper, there were blatant factual errors regarding an incident which occurred between Richard Pino, who was a guest at the Independence Gala on August 20, 2011 and JICFI. The following is a true and correct account of what actually occurred. The headline in Street Hype stating that the Jamaican Independence Celebration Foundation, Inc. sues for airline tickets, was incorrect. JICFI did not sue anyone. Mr. Pino attended the gala on August 20, 2011 at the NY Hilton Hotel. There was a silent auction where two first-class round trip tickets to Jamaica and two round-trip coach tickets to Jamaica were auctioned. The auction was chaired by Marcia Skyers-James, who sent the information to Caribbean Airline's representative Ann Marie Francis, who subsequently forwarded the information to Caribbean Airline's Marketing Department. The silent auction listed blackout dates; in addition, the winner would have to pay for taxes and service fees associated with the tickets.

It is important to note that this lawsuit was filed after CAL agreed to honor certain demands made by Mr. Pino regarding the prize trip. However, on January 20, 2012, Mr. Pino filed a lawsuit for Breach of Contract, naming Paulette Willoughby, Marcia Skyers-James, Ann Marie Francis, Caribbean Airlines, and the Jamaican Independence Celebration Foundation, Inc. New York, NY A former Jamaican policeman has lost an appeal to prevent his extradition from New York. The ruling was made in a New York court in an application filed by former cop Mark Russell. Russell had argued in court that he could not get a fair trial if he were to be extradited to Jamaica and that there were inconsistencies in the evidence supplied by the Jamaican authorities. However, the judge dismissed his application. This means the way is now clear for extradition proceedings to begin. Last September, a New York judge had ruled that the policeman should be extradited to face a trial for the July 2007 murder of Ravin Thompson. Jamaican Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn had made a ruling in 2009 for Russell and another policeman, Morris Lee, to be charged with Thompson's murder. But Russell had left the island before the ruling was made. Courtesy of www.go-jamaica.com

Criminal Court, the defense said Carlotta's actions are not enough for a murder conviction. "I don't think her actions rise to the level of depravity. I think there is ignorance and as I said a lot of stupidity, but let's not hold a mother to that level, let's hold her to a more reasonable level," said Defense Attorney Alan Stutman. Marchella's grandmother, Loretta Brett, is charged with manslaughter in the case. Closing arguments begin in her trial Thursday.

Under the Financial Account Tax Compliance Act (Fatca) regulations, local financial institutions that sign the agreement with the US Inland Revenue Service (IRS) are required to identify, document and report on the accounts of 'US persons' in an effort to improve compliance in the area of foreign financial assets and offshore accounts. Since the fee arraingments are very similiar from attorney to attorney, why not take the time to make sure you have a lawyer who you can work with and who has experience settling and trying cases such as yours. The most common, and usually the best way to find your attorney is through recommendations of people you trust. You are likely to receive a lot of recommendations, especially if the results of the malpractice are severe or if the malpractice was in the news. By Anthony Turner he 118th staging of the Penn Relays came to a close last Saturday at the Ben Franklin Field in Philadelphia, PA and, as usual, it pushed the capabilities of the human body to dazzling new heights. The event has been a favorite carnival for Jamaicans for many years and 2012 was no different as thousands of black, gold and green clad supporters poured into the stadium to see their favorite high school and college teams perform. On Saturday, among those who braved the chilly 54 degrees temperature were Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Hon Portia Simpson Miller and other Jamaicans in the Diaspora who brought pockets of warmth to the Carnival. With over 50,000 fans attending the event on the final day, it is a marketing paradise for Caribbean companies like Caribbean Food Delights, Groovin In The Park concert, Grace and LIME who wished to brand their products there. Many Jamaicans showed up too to find long lost friends, and it is almost a certainty that one will find at least a handful of old acquaintances that were presumed permanently lost. And for professional profilers of all ages, the reunion is a dream with numerous fashion ramps available to anyone willing to parade them, complete with thousands of admiring eyeballs. The bravest of the profilers appear to have an almost spiteful intent to upstage the athletes for attention at this the largest and oldest track and field gathering on the eastern coast of the United States.

n the United States, Mother's Day is an annual holiday celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Mother's Day recognizes mothers, motherhood and maternal bonds in general, as well as the positive contributions that they make to society. Although many Mother's Day celebrations worldwide have quite different origins and traditions, most have now been influenced by the American traditions, including churchgoing, the distribution of carnations, and family dinners. Origin of Mother's Day goes back to the era of ancient Greeks and Romans. But the roots of Mother's Day history can also be traced in UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festival saw the light of the day in the US. However, the celebration of the festival as it is seen today is a recent phenomenon and not even a hundred years old. Thanks to the hard work of the pioneering women of their times, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis, that day came into existence. Today, the festival of Mothers Day is celebrated across 46 countries (though on different dates) and is a hugely popular affair. Millions of people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honor their mothers, thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and being their constant support and wellwisher. Best wishes to all our mothers.

ecently, there have been a growing number of adolescents and younger children who want a sex change. These individuals are unhappy with their body and feel they were born the wrong gender. As gender identity issues have gotten more public attention, parents and doctors are starting to become more accepting of such children. As a result, there has been an increase in sex change treatment in children. However, it is not without controversy. Many doctors and researchers feel that treating a child younger than 18 years of age is unethical. They feel that it is harmful to provide an irreversible treatment at such a young age. However, there are other doctors who feel it is more harmful to withhold treatment from these children. Children who suffer everyday with the feeling that they were born the wrong gender face many challenges. They face resentment, bullying and abuse from both their parents and peers. In extreme cases, some have attempted self-mutilation as an attempt to change their anatomy. For these children, acceptance and treatment options are critical to their health and well-being. Public and media awareness has increased the knowledge of this disorder and as a result, some children are finding help before the age of 18.

The Endocrine Society supports transgender hormone treatment but does insist that it not be started before puberty begins. Transgender hormone treatment recommends puberty-blocking drugs until the age of 16, at which time the child can begin a permanent hormone treatment. This procedure has received support from medical facilities throughout the US. Dr. Spack reports that his Gender Management Service Clinic which opened in 2007, averages about 19 patients a year. He has treated 97 patients from 19982012. There are other clinics around the country that have also seen increases in patients wanting to begin the gender change process. It is important to note that the puberty blocking drugs the clinics use are reversible. However, Dr. Speck notes that only 1 out of 97 patients backed out of permanent treatment. This study is important because it raises awareness of gender identity issues and its impact on youth. Children who do not feel accepted may engage in self-destructing behaviors, suffer from abuse and depression and be forced to live a life they hate. It is important for children suffering from gender issues to realize that they are not alone and there are options for help.

Dear Divine Diva: y fianc, "David," and I are being married next year and we have only one disappointment. It's about my keeping my last name. I don't want to take David's last name. I have had the same name for 33 years and I do not believe a woman "has" to take her husband's name when they marry. However, the biggest issue for me is my fianc never knew his father, who left when David was a baby. I do not wish to take the name of a man who neither of us knows, and who had no positive influence on our lives. I'm part of a close-knit family, and I am proud to bear the name of my father -- a hardworking, dedicated Vietnam veteran. Am I out of line? We will accept your answer because we are unable to resolve this ourselves. -Standing My Ground In New York

Courtsey of www.jamaicaobserv er.com ore women are cheating on their partners, a feature of changing gender roles in the Caribbean, according to a tri-nation study carrried out in Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The report, commissioned in 2011 by Panos Caribbean and which is to be released here this month, also confirmed very strong links between infidelity and transmission of HIV, the virus which causes AIDS. In highlighting infidelity, focus must be on the role of both men and women in perpetuating the spread of HIV. While in the past, it was usually the men who played the field, now many Caribbean women are doing the same, the Panos Caribbean study said. According to the amalgamated study, married women in the Caribbean were particularly vulnerable to HIV because of (intrinsic) trust and social conventions surrounding marriage. Many are unaware of their husbands infidelity, or in cases where they suspect that their husbands are cheating, they are in denial or not in a position to negotiate condom use, Panos said. In a culture where men are socialised to believe their manly prowess ought to be measured by the number of women they have, it is almost the accepted norm for men in Jamaica to have multiple sexual partners, even within committed marital and commonlaw relationshipsBut infidelity has and

continues to fuel the spread of HIV both in heterosexual and same-sex relationships, and has even surfaced within the church, said the report. Research in Haiti clearly showed that many married women, as well single women with steady boyfriends, took lovers on the side. For some it is an occasional fling, while others form medium- to long-term sexual relationships outside, that run parallel to their recognised union, Panos said. The NGO, CECOSIDA, which conducted the Haiti leg of the study to determine how infidelity contributed to HIV transmission rates there, found evidence of a direct correlation between both. Infidelity is a strange phenomenon which, although common, is still taboo: if you practise it, you (certainly) dont talk

about itAt least this is the case in Haiti. What is particularly alarming is that most men dont use condoms, and they have no idea about their partners sexual history. So, in this way, STIs such as HIV are very easily transmitted, the Haiti report said. In the Dominican Republic, the study found that marital infidelity was a serious social problem, but there it was still mostly a problem with men. While some men will take a mistress on a long-term basis, others have multiple sexual partners, often changing them in quick succession. While this behaviour is not completely sanctioned in Dominican society, it is widespread and is tolerated, the report said, citing a 2006 UNIFEM report. Surveys commissioned by the Dominican Health Ministry in the 1990s found that approximately 50 per cent of men have had extramarital affairs. However, a lead researcher has indicated that these surveys may have understated the reality. Against this background, infidelity has been identified as one of the main reasons for the spread of AIDS in the Dominican Republic, a country which has one of Latin America's highest percentages of people living with HIV, Panos said. Panos added that apart from sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean was the only region where the proportion of women and girls living with HIV (at 53%) was higher than that of men and boys.

WWW.STREETHYPENEWSPAPER.COM ARIES (Mar. 2 1 Apr. 1 9 ): You can finally breathe a sigh of relief today, even if you're still feeling tired from a recent whirlwind of activity. However, the change of pace is partially an illusion, since you ultimately know what you're going to do. Just don't fall into the trap of believing what you see now. TAURUS (Apr. 2 0 May 2 0 ): You have an air of magic about you today and others will likely notice your sparkle. Don't make any sudden changes if things are already going your way. But stirring up the status quo in a relationship can be a smart move if you're feeling stuck romantically. GEMINI (May 2 1 Jun. 2 0 ): You may be feeling restless today, but you need to balance your wanderlust with your domestic responsibilities. Make the most of your sensible outlook early in the day while you still can get some work done. You might even try to distract yourself by starting a creative project to avoid the chores you haven't yet finished. CANCER (Jun. 2 1 Jul . 2 2 ): You wish this could be a day of rest, even if you have lots to do at work. Naturally, you need to be responsible by taking your job seriously, but overexerting yourself now doesn't make sense because you could end up exhausted. Nevertheless, you can successfully enlist others to help you finish in a timely manner.

WEEKLY HOROSCOPE
LEO ( Jul . 2 3 Aug . 2 2 ) : Although this can be a very memorable day, it's up to you to make it special; the magic won't happen all by itself. Taking control of your career now is the best way to accomplish this transformation. Consider a practical project that's big enough for you to sink your teeth into, but don't wait for anyone to tell you what to do. VIRGO (Aug. 23 Sept. 22): Don't waste time trying to figure out how to be more productive today. Thankfully, you have an opportunity now to take care of something that has been on your mind for a long time. But being successful is about more than just getting a job done.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 Oct.22): Your imagination is hyperactive today, flooding your conscious with more fantasies than you can easily integrate. But as long as you discern the difference between reality and fantasy, you'll be able to thrive. Enjoy making magic within the misty depths of your own dream world.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 2 2 Jan. 1 9 ): Feelings of uneasiness wash upon the shores of your consciousness for no apparent reason today. And when something does happen without an observable cause you might become restless, yet unsure of your next step. Your subconscious may be sending loud messages as a reminder that some things remain outside of your control. AQUARIUS (Jan. 2 0 Feb. 1 8 ): You've been lured off the edge of the map of logic and nothing is exactly as it seems anymore. Unfortunately, you may feel more confused throughout the day, even if everything appears normal. If you're floating in the realm of feelings today, you still might believe that your feet are planted firmly on the ground. PISCES (Feb. 1 9 Mar. 2 0 ): Your affinity for fantasy may create unnecessary relationship drama today. On one hand, you're drawn into the elusive magic of your imagination as mental Mercury aspects supernatural Neptune. On the other hand, you're very pragmatic now as the Moon, Pluto and the Sun.

SAGITTARIUS (No v. 2 2 Dec. 2 1 ): You may believe that you already analyzed every little detail in your new plan, but your associates might have a different view of things. Taking a shortcut will only get you into trouble today and you could be left holding the bag.

While You Are Cooking... Meats must be cooked to the proper temperature to assure safety. Germs such as E-coli and salmonella can still be present in undercooked meats such as hamburger and chicken. These germs can cause severe illness and even death. While the juice color will usually change from red to gray when the meat is fully cooked, it is not a reliable test to assure it is safe to eat. Always check the temperature with a meat thermometer. Foods that reach the temperature listed or higher are fully cooked. Chicken 165o F Hamburger 160o F Pork 150o F Hot dogs 140o F Leftovers 165o F Eggs 145o F Other foods 140o F Insert the thermometer into the center of the meat, which is the least cooked part. For checking hot dogs, go from the end of the hot dog to the center. Be careful not to pass through the meat and touch the cooking surface or you

will get a false high temperature reading. Wash your hands after touching raw meat! Use utensils to handle the cooked meat. Do not place cooked meat on surfaces that had raw meat. While You Are Serving Food... Serve the first-cooked meats first. Make sure the food is used before the temperature drops under 140 degrees, and within two hours. Cold foods need to be kept cold. Keep them refrigerated (at 40o F) or stored in coolers with lots of ice until ready to eat. Before serving, wash your hands thoroughly. Avoid touching food such as rolls, bread etc. with your bare hands. Wash your hands after touching raw or undercooked foods.

Whenever Working With Food... Leave the food preparation area to smoke, eat, or drink. When you return, wash your hands thoroughly before handling any food. Wash your hands after any contact with unclean surfaces -after handling trash or raw meat, eating or smoking, using the bathroom, handling pets, or dirtying your hands during any activity.

A Few More Tips... Wipe surfaces often, especially after using them for food preparation. Germs from undercooked meat can grow on vegetables cut or washed on the same surface as the meat. Mix and use a sanitizer solution of one capful of chlorine bleach per gallon of water for cleaning work area surfaces. Marinate food in the refrigerator. Don't taste the marinade or reuse it after raw meat has been added. Keep flies away! Cover trash containers, and do not store meat wrappers and other trash, even for a short time, in open cardboard boxes or uncovered containers. Do not use fly spray or "NoPest" chemical strips - they can contaminate the food.

By Bri an Tracy www. ent rep reneur. co m 1 . Th e Pro duc t Mus t S at i s f y an Immedi ate Need: The first principle to consider in selecting any new product or service is to determine if it fills a genuine, existing need that customers have right now. A new product or service must solve a problem of some kind for the customer or make the life or work of the customer better in a cost-effective way. You must be very clear, from the beginning, about exactly what your product or service does to improve the quality of life or work of your customer.

sider every expenditure. They take the time to analyze the use of every dollar. They work from detailed budgets and they review them every week and every month. The basic rule for entrepreneurial success is this: only spend money to earn money.

2 . Offer Go o d Qual i ty at a Fai r Pri ce: The second principle for business success with any product or service is that it must be of good quality at a fair price. If it's in competition with other similar products or services, it must have what's called a Unique Selling Propositionone or more features or benefits that make it unique, different and superior to any competitive product or service. This area of uniqueness is central to success in business. No product or service can succeed unless it's somehow unique and superior to any other product or service that competes with it. The safest business strategy is to start off with an accepted product that already has a widespread market and then find a way to improve upon it in some way. 3 . Be Careful Wi th Yo ur Mo ney : The third principle for business success is tight financial controls and good budgeting. Successful companies use accurate bookkeeping and accounting systems. They put these systems in place at the very beginning and carefully record every penny they spend. Even the largest multi-national companiesthose that do billions of dollars in sales each yeartend to be very careful with their expenditures. They're constantly looking for ways to cut costs while maintaining the same level of quality. They focus on frugality at all times. 4 . Cas h Fl o w Is Es s enti al : Especially with a small business, you must hold onto your cash as a drowning man would hold onto a life preserver. Cash is the lifeblood of the business. Cash flow is a critical measure and determining factor of business success. All successful entrepreneurs install careful financial controls and monitor them every day. They carefully con-

5 . Guard Yo ur Cas h Careful l y : One key to business survival, with regard to your operations, is "frugality, frugality, frugality." Once I worked for a man who had started with nothing and built an $800 million dollar business empire by the time he was 55. I was amazed to see that he ate lunch at a small diner across the street from the office and drove a used car. He delighted in saving money. Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, when he was worth more than $25 billion dollars, still drove his own pickup truck to and from work. This attitude of frugality from the top permeated every aspect of Wal-Mart all the way down and throughout every department. The practice of frugality assured that the business was profitable, year after year. 6 . Max i mi ze Yo ur Marketi ng : Perhaps one of the most important principles for business success is strong momentum in the sales department. This requires an emphasis on marketing that permeates the entire organization. Everybody must think about selling and satisfying customers all day long. What's the purpose of a business? Some people say that it's to "make a profit." But this isn't correct. The true purpose of a business is to "create and keep a customer." Profits are the result of creating and keeping a sufficient number of customers in a costeffective way. All emphasis has to be on creating and keeping customers.

7 . Sel l i ng Is the Co re Ski l l o f a Succes s ful Bus i nes s : The keys to business success are simple. With regard to the product, the keys are to "Sell! Sell! Sell!" One of the most important single skills you must develop for succeeding in your own business is the ability to sell yourself and your product to your customers. In fact, the ability to sell is one of the key skills for a successful life. With very few exceptions, all successful businesses begin with a single person who's excited about the product and who's very good at selling it to others. He likes the product so much that he can hardly wait to talk to other people about it. He's eager to make new customer contacts.

Bronx: herell Rosegreen was on the brink of a successful singing career when she met and fell in love with a charming man. She never imagined that the man she loved would become her worst nightmare. She was beaten, humiliated and abused. She was expecting her first baby when he threw her against a brick wall while she was 6 months pregnant. Her baby boy, deprived of oxygen when the placenta ripped as a result of the beating, died in her arms five hours after birth. But Sherell is a survivor, a fighter. She put him in jail and made it her lifes work. In addition to her singing, she reaches out to women stuck in abusive relationships. In 2011, Sherell founded Take It by Force, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping victims of domestic violence. Now Sherell, a popular gospel singer, has

written a book based on her experiences in an abusive relationship, offering advice, help, and support to women who need to reclaim their shattered lives from their abusers. Entitled Abused under His Charm, the book recounts the story of Martha, whose downward spiral at the hands of her initially charming abuser cost her career, her friends, her child and almost cost her life.
