Course Description Covers the context of counseling and basic case management issues related to a variety of situations. Generic issues include scheduling clients, case recording, billing and practice procedures. Specific issues pertain to timing of the Life Style Analysis, to the use of individual, marital, family and group treatment strategies, and to developing home work assignments. New York: Brunner/Mazel, 1996 (Optional) 3.4 Course Notebook Learning Outcomes are to: 4.1 Identify and become familiar with a 6-party system model and how it is related to case management. 4.2 Incorporate the comprehensive model of health care and the Diamond model of care into each student's orientation. 4.3 Review basic and specific issues of case management. 4.4 Have the learner become familiar with the current context of counseling including the dynamic interaction between the person-environment and the interface with the counseling community including third party payment systems. 4.5 Become familiar with managing the components of multi-disciplinary cases, for example: learning-disabled children and adults, courtrelated problems, chemical dependency recovery, and geriatric cases. 4.6 Develop a perspective on risk factors and special populations at risk. 4.7 Learn how professional case managers practice in their settings. 4.8 Develop a multi-faceted awareness of the changing concepts, processes, and practices of counseling and Adlerian case management. 4.9 Become prepared for recurring and emerging challenges and practices in doing Adlerian psychotherapy and consultation. 6. Assessment Plan Credit is given to students who successfully meet ail of the requirements at a level of proficiency acceptable to the instructor. Evaluation is based as follows: 15 points: Class participation 35 points: Group presentation 50 points: Written paper on "Philosophy and Practice of Case Management"

Group Presentation 7. The class will be subdivided into groups of three or four members. The task will be to present information and case management material to the class. The case can be one in which a group member is currently involved, or it can be a simulated case example. The group will have sixty minutes in which to present. Some of the case examples which could be used are: a problem child at home and in school, a problem adolescent who needs drug treatment, a couple with significant mental illness on the part of one spouse, a family which is significantly dysfunctional and in which the husband is on probation with the county court system, etc. Presentations should be prepared for our Saturday class.

Final Paper: "Your Philosophy and Practice of Case Management" 8.1 Identify an area of practice in which you currently have a strong interest and/or experience, or select an area of practice with which you are likely to become involved in the future. Describe the types of cases you are called upon to manage. Give some principles and practices which you use, or plan to use, to case manage this population. Are you a "generalist" or a "specialist'? 8.2 Identify the types and degrees of risk factors that you are likely to encounter in this population. 8.3 Develop your philosophy of case management. How will you play this role? What are likely to be your strengths and weaknesses with this group? How well are you trained to manage this group? 8.4 What are the specific approaches and management practices that you will use as you develop your case management skills over time? What administrative skills might you next develop in order to become more professionally competent? 8.5 Provide at least one case management example that could be used to demonstrate facets of your approach.
