ts the summer of 1865 in

Waterloo, New York, and
druggist Henry C. Welles
had an idea. The Civil War had
just ended, and Welles idea was
to place patriotic flowers on the
graves of soldiers who had died
for the Cause. Nothing came
from this thought until the
spring of 1866, when Welles
brought his plan to Civil War
hero General John B. Murray,
who completely supported the
idea. In a committee run by
Welles and General Murray, on
May 5, 1866, the village of
Waterloo was decorated with
evergreens and mourning black,
along with Flags at half-mast.
Ceremonies and the decorating
of graves took place at three
cemeteries, as residents, civic
society members, and veterans
marched to and from the
gravesites led by General
Murray and martial music.
Waterloo celebrated the
next year on May 5, then joined
with other communities in
holding the observance on May
30, 1868, in accordance with
General Order Number 11 by
General John A. Logan,
National Commander of the
Grand Army of the Republic.
This first observance saw flowers
placed on the graves for
Decoration Day of both Union
and Confederate soldiers in
Arlington National Cemetery.
This is one of many stories as to
how Memorial Day began, with
a lot of cities and towns claim-
ing to having started the holi-
day. Womens groups say that
they were decorating graves in
the South before the Civil War
ended, especially in a hymn not
published until 1867 by Nella L.
Sweet called Kneel Where Our
Loves Are Sleeping." It would
most likely be safest to say that
Memorial Day had its start in
numerous places wherever the
celebration of the patriotic dead
was carried out.
To go back to its begin-
nings, the first state to officially
recognize what was originally
called Decoration Day was New
York in 1873, followed by all the
Northern states by 1890.
However, the South refused to
acknowledge the observance,
honoring their dead on separate
days until after World War I,
when the holiday changed from
honoring just those who died
fighting in the Civil War to
honoring Americans who died
fighting in any war. Southern
communities set aside a day to
mark the end of the war
as a memorial to specific
battles, such as Sharpsburg,
Maryland (Antietam Battle-
field), Charleston, South
Carolina, Petersburg, Virginia,
and Columbus, Mississippi.
The popularity of the day
and the use of poppies was
heightened in 1915 with the
December publishing of the
World War I poem In Flanders

series of community discus-
sions focusing on timely topics
of general interest, will be
held on Friday, May 18, at
7:30 p.m., in the Carnevale
Center of St. Marys Parish, 10
Lenox Avenue, Pompton

cussed will be chosen by those
in attendance. At the last
meeting, two ideas were pro-
posed for discussion this
month. One is Should there
be a term limit for members of
Congress? while the other is
Should candidates for public
office who make untrue/mis-
leading statements about their
rivals be charge with libel or
slander? If the majority of
attendees would rather focus
on another subject, that topic
will be discussed. The only
rules are that all views are wel-
come and the discussions must
be open, calm, and respectful.
The aim is to explore various
perspectives of important and
interesting ideas, guided by a
moderator. The objective is
not necessarily to reach a con-
clusion about a topic, rather
to examine the many facets of
most complex issues. The pub-
lic is invited, both to partici-
pate and to listen.

o says Suze Orman of
TV financial commen-
tary fame. She further
tells you why you should
never purchase an annuity for
your IRA in when she asks
this question. Why would you
place an already tax-deferred
vehicle inside a tax-deferred
annuity? She states that it
would be stupid and if an
insurance agent recommends
such a play, they must either
be stupid or severely commis-
sion driven! She concedes
that there is a death benefit
feature to a variable annuity
that might be valuable if the
account value is less than the
original investment when
you die as the beneficiaries
would be made whole, but, in
the same sentence she claims
that the insurance industry
isnt philanthropic and they
offer that benefit because
they charge for it. She can
think of no other reason to
use a variable annuity for
qualified funds accept for the
greedy commission-sucking
insurance agent to make a
huge profit at the expense of
her listeners. Perhaps there is
another angle to this story,
which I would like to share
with you here.
On the first issue Suze is
partially correct. An annuity
is tax-deferred whether its an
IRA or not. So placing your
IRA inside of an annuity
offers no additional tax
advantages. BUT, annuities
charge no fee for tax deferral
proving her comment worth-
less. Therefore, there must
be another reason that any
advisor would suggest a vari-
able annuity for an IRA
account and in fact there are
many reasons other than the
death benefit feature previ-
ously mentioned. If death
benefit is an important fea-
ture for the investor, an
optional rider may be pur-
chased that will automatical-
ly escalate the death benefit
by a compounded return, or
the account value, whichever
is greater, in most cases the
rider is capped at 250% of the
original investment.
The best feature that
Suze neglects to mention are
optional living benefit riders
that offers two distinct fea-
tures available nowhere else
for equity based investments.
The first is called a roll-up
feature and the second is a
guarantee of income for life
or two lifetimes if elected,
WITHOUT Annuitization!
Most people are viscerally
negative about Annuitiza-
tion, and rightfully so, as one
must trade their nest egg for
the income for life guarantee.
NOT THE CASE with
a living benefit rider!
Available for a reasonable
fee, relative to what the ben-
efit offers, regardless of how
low the stock or bond mar-
kets may bring down your
account value, your with-
drawal base will never
decline and in fact will esca-
late by either actual perform-
ance during good years or by
the stated roll-up percentage,
usually 5-6% compounded
annually during bad or nega-
tive performance years, until
withdrawals begin. Suze neg-
lects to consider the potential
for negative markets during
the accumulation phase of
ones retirement monies, but,
more importantly, through-
out their retirement income
systematic withdrawal years!
Consider what effect the
horrific stock markets of 2008
or 2000-2001-2002 would
have had on your portfolio if
you were withdrawing sys-
tematically from your retire-
ment funds! What the media
calls a buying opportunity
for investors accumulating
retirement funds, is called a
disaster for those people
living on the income from
their accumulated retirement
funds!
What protection do you
have for your assets placed in
harms way in the stock mar-
ket for the greater growth
potential have when correc-
tions and crashes occur, and
occur they will! A Variable
Annuity Living Benefit
Rider, while they are not all
the same and must be studied
and compared to determine
which would be best for each
persons particular situation,
are, in this columnists opin-
ion, a vital and critical com-
ponent of any allocation
involving the risks inherent
in stock allocations! Believe
me, in my 31 years in this
industry, I have witnessed
retirees agonize over the
financial news and the after-
math of the tsunamis that
devastated their portfolios
that were unprotected by a
living benefit rider. Sure
there is a cost to buy a living
benefit rider, some as high as
1.4% of the withdrawal base
annually. But, consider the
fact that the income pro-
duced by the rider is unen-
cumbered by the fee structure
and as long as the insured is
alive, regardless if the
account value declines to
zero from the combination
of withdrawals, fees and neg-
ative markets, the monthly
income checks will never
stop!
Your portfolio, like your
home, car or boat, is an asset
that may be insured against
the risk of loss. When you
own your home, car or boat,
outside of car liability
requirements, there is no law
that says you must insure
these valuable items. How-
ever, most people would con-
sider a loss of considerable
dollars to any one of these
assets an unacceptable risk.
For most retirees, their port-
folio replaced their home as
the largest asset they now
own and to think it is unin-
sured where their income
could be compromised is
unacceptable.
Never buy a variable annuity for your IRA or 401k rollover!

his is part one of three
articles reviewing the
most current scientific
evidence showing the rela-
tionship of the health of our
mouths to our bodys systemic
health. The latest research is
showing an incontrovertible
truth: oral health is an inte-
gral part of preventative cardi-
ology, a substantial part of dia-
betic care, and a major part of
the prevention of any inflam-
matory disease.
The mouth is the portal
of entry for most of the patho-
genic (disease-causing bacte-
ria) bacteria that affects our
health, and a location for
potential infections that affects
us adversely.
Oral inflammation is the
bodys response to any issues in
the mouth. It not only shows
up in periodontal (gum) dis-
ease which effects 85 percent
of the U.S. population and is
the most common human
inflammatory disease but also
in patients with crowded,
decaying, and abscessed teeth,
partially erupted wisdom teeth,
and cancers.
Inflammation in the
mouth results in an inflam-
matory response. When you
cut your skin, for instance,
your body sends cells to that
area to repair it. This inflam-
matory response results in
redness, swelling, and scab-
bing. Orally, the inflammato-
ry response is similar, but the
byproducts spread quickly
throughout our body. Because
of the large blood supply and
thin membranes, this influ-
ences all inflammatory dis-
eases in our body.
Dont ever forget to look
at periodontal disease as an
important source of inflamma-
tion in reference to cardiovas-
cular disease, said Marc Penn,
M.D., Ph.D., at a recent heart
symposium for cardiologists at
the Cleveland clinic. One of
the reasons heart attacks are
not being prevented is because
health care providers are not
recognizing the link between
cardiovascular disease and
oral-systemic health, he said.

in cardiology compares the

Despite uncertainties,
Governor Nelson A.
Rockefeller signed a procla-
mation on March 7, 1966,
that the State of New York
officially recognized Water-
loo as the birthplace of
Memorial Day. The Congress
of the United States passed
House Concurrent Reso-
lution 587 on May 17 and
May 19, 1966, in Waterloos
favor. Also, on May 26, 1966,
President Lyndon B. Johnson
signed a Presidential Pro-cla-
mation recognizing Water-
loo.
The National Holiday
Act of 1971 made every last
Monday in May the national
observance of Memorial Day.
This ensured a three-day
weekend for all involved, but
it has come under criticism
by some veterans groups, who
feel that the three days takes
away from the feeling of the
observance. Several southern
states have an additional sep-
arate day for honoring the
Confederate soldiers that
were killed (January 19 in
Texas, April 26 in Alabama,
Florida, Georgia, and
Mississippi; May 10 in South
Carolina; and June 3 in
Louisiana and Tennessee).
Memorial Day in 2012
falls on Monday, May 28, and
however you choose to spend
it, whether by a cookout or
going to a parade or both, it is
totally personal. Memorial
Day is a time of reconciliation
and remembrance, and
whether you know the sol-
diers name(s) or not, it is a
period to think of what they
have done for us as a nation as
a whole. Many have made the
ultimate sacrifice in giving
their lives for our continued
freedom, and no matter what
shape our nation is in, we
should honor them on
Memorial Day and in thought
every day of the week.

cratching is a normal,
inborn behavior of
cats. Cats scratch and
stretch on various things for
two main reasons. The most
obvious reason that we think
of is to sharpen or groom
their claws. Scratching can
also serve another lesser
known purpose. Cats have
sweat/scent glands on their
paws, so when they scratch
on items such as furniture or
posts, cats are leaving their
scent behind as a way to
mark their territory. The
scratching also leaves a visual
marker of territory. They
often return to these objects
that have their scent to
spread it again and it appears
that they have 'favorite'
places to scratch. Cats may
also scratch simply to stretch
their muscles.
Knowing why cats like
to scratch household items is
half the battle in preventing
slashed drapes, scratched
sofas, and ripped up carpets.
We can use this information
to our advantage and try to
get a cat to not scratch our
furniture and instead only use
approved scratching posts. In
general, proper training, to
scratch appropriate surfaces,
combined with frequent nail
care, can prevent damage in
the home.
The name of the game
is to provide options. You
cannot prevent your cat from
scratching, but you can train
them to scratch only in cer-
tain approved areas. A type
of scratching post will give
your cat the alternative place
to scratch. Cats scratch most
frequently right after waking
so it is critical that the
scratching post is convenient
to where they spend much of
their time, such as windows
or sleeping areas, or where
they are currently preferring
to scratch.
Many cats seem to prefer
vertical scratching posts,
although some prefer hori-
zontal posts. Vertical posts
must be sturdy and should be
tall enough for the cat to be
fully stretched and not reach
higher than the top.
Horizontal corrugated scrat-
ching pads are favorites for
cats as well. Scratching post
materials come in a wide
variety and some cats will
prefer one over another.
Therefore if your cat pays no
attention to the post, don't
give up; try other materials.
These materials can be wood,
sisal rope, rough fabric or
even carpet.
Training to use scratch-
ing posts is most effective
when your cat is first intro-
duced to the home. This is
done by enticing the cat to
the scratching post upon
awakening, rubbing catnip
on the post (or even easier is
catnip spray), and using
treats or toys part-way up the
post to encourage stretching
and scratching. Positive rein-
forcement, praise and
rewards should be given at
each step.
If your cat is already
scratching the furniture or
curtains, first try to find out
whether your cat prefers ver-
tical or horizontal objects
and their material preference
and provide these options.
We also want to discourage
use of unapproved areas. A
common method is to use a
water gun or squirt bottle. It
is important that the cat
doesn't think it is you spray-
ing them. They need to asso-
ciate the undesirable squirt of
water with the inappropriate
item they're scratching. You
can also place double-sided
tape on or plastic runners
upside down (so the 'nubby'
side is up) around inappropri-
ate areas. It is also important
to remove the cat's scent
with an enzyme cleaner.
With any correction try to
direct the cat to the post or
approved scratching surface
and reward its use.
Routine nail care is very
important to decrease the
desire to scratch often.
The tips of your cat's
nails should be trimmed every
one or two weeks. Introduce
nail trimming as part of rou-
tine handling to kittens so it
will be well tolerat-
ed as an adult cat.
Another option to
prevent household
damage is plastic
nail caps. These
usually need to be
applied every 4-6
weeks. With prac-
tice, they can be
easy to apply if your cat will
allow the handling of their
paws in such a way: after a nail
trim, fill the cap about a third
of the way with adhesive, and
fit the cap over the nail.
Declawing is a highly
controversial way to prevent
unwanted scratching in the
home. Declawing involves
amputation of the end of the
digit at the distal phalangeal
joint. That is equivalent to
removing the tip of your fin-
ger at the joint just before the
nail. Declawing is controver-
sial because it can cause a
great deal of pain and may not
be a necessary surgery. Cats
that are declawed must
remain indoors only for their
lifetime because some of their
defenses have been taken
away. It is recommended that
the procedure be avoided if at
all possible but if you find that
it is necessary to declaw con-
sult with your veterinarian
for options and behavioral
advice.

t can be sobering to realize
that beach and pool season
is right around the corner.
Maybe that diet you hoped to
go on got stuck in neutral.
What can you do now?
The prospect of days
spent in the sun without the
security of a bulky sweater or
baggy pants to cover up bellies
and bulges often inspires peo-
ple to reassess their fitness
goals in an effort to lose
weight. There are some right
and wrong ways to shed a few
pounds, and here are some
guidelines to get you started.
Crash diets: Nutritionists
have long noted that crash
diets can be unhealthy and
ineffective with regards to
long-term weight loss. But
new research disputes those
claims. A recent study from
Tufts University found that a
slow-and-steady diet is only
successful for the very few
who are not sidetracked by
rich foods or other common
food challenges in daily life.
In fact, they confirm that, if
done correctly with a healthy,
calorie-cutting, food-based
diet, fad diets can produce
quick and lasting success.
Clinical experience shows
that somebody with a serious
commitment to weight loss
can lose up to 20 pounds
and two to three dress sizes
in two months.
This is not to say you
should sustain yourself on
grapefruits or cabbage soup.
Weight loss that results from
such diets is more water
weight than fat. Reducing
portion sizes and caloric
intake could provide a metab-
olism boost.
Exercise: Being active is
usually conducive to losing
weight. But the right exercises
are also key. Heavy manual
labor may not be the
best route to take, as
building muscle could
also increase overall
weight and add bulk to
the body. Cardiovas-
cular and light toning
exercises can help
many people achieve
their weight-loss goals
more quickly than diet-
ing alone.
Many people find
the warm weather nat-
urally inspires them to
be more active. Make
the most of the beauti-
ful weather by getting
off the couch and going
outside for a walk or a
jog.
Indulge in good
foods.
Filling up on foods that
help your body realize it is full
can help with weight loss.
These include foods that are
high in fiber and protein.
Choose non-starch vegetables
like broccoli and cauliflower,
which are high in fiber.
Chickpeas and other legumes
will also fill you up fast. Snack
on berries and apples, which
are filling and also a good
source of fiber. Look for
whole-grain breads, which are
more substantial than overly
processed breads.
Set reasonable goals.
Research from Tufts indi-
cates that it is a physiologi-
cal fact that the human body
can only lose a maximum of
three pounds of actual fat a
week. Other weight loss is
often an emptying of the
intestinal system and water
loss. Starvation is not a
healthy way to lose weight,
as it actually depletes mus-
cles while taxing the cardio-
vascular system. Therefore,
plan how much you want to
lose and then divide that
number by three. Then
you'll have an accurate
measurement on how many
weeks it will take to lose the
weight with aggressive diet-
ing. If you want to lose 30
pounds, it could take 10 weeks
to achieve that goal.
Even a small amount of
weight loss can result in
marked improvement in how
you look and feel, especially
when sporting a swimsuit.
Personal health should always
take precedence over losing
weight to improve your
appearance.

he milestone of riding
a bike is a big one for
kids and their par-
ents. With new equipment,
toddlers can reach that two-
wheeled milestone earlier
than ever and enjoy many
sidewalks and bike paths
together.
According to experts,
children 12-to-18 months are
not bicycle-ready, as they
lack pedaling skills and their
neck muscle strength is insuf-
ficient to allow them to sup-
port the weight of a helmet
and to endure riding on
rougher terrain. Instead, chil-
dren in this age group can
build their strength and bal-
ance by using items such as
rocking horses.
Trailers are a sound
alternative for bringing the
baby along. They are light-
weight, sturdy and roomy
enough for additional items.
Parents are advised to make
sure the trailer is equipped
with a tall flag alerting traffic
to its presence. If the trailer's
bulky size is daunting, you
can opt for a mounted seat
instead.
Once a child reaches 18
months, mounted bike seats
are sleek, easy to install, and
give parents another way to
ride a bike with a baby.

special occasions among those whose memory of the recession is still fresh. However,
dining out does remain a strong choice when hosting a special occasion such as a birthday
party or anniversary celebration. When choosing a restaurant to have such a gathering,
consider the following tips to ensure that rare restaurant night out goes off without a hitch.

Look for versatility in a menu. When
dining out, the emphasis is obviously on the
food. Couples might enjoy certain
restaurants they have previously patronized,
but that does not necessarily make the
restaurant ideal for a party. When shopping
for a restaurant, look for one that boasts a

of palates. Especially for larger parties, the
versatility of the menu is very important.
Restaurants that boast a large entree
selection that includes meat, poultry,
seafood, and even vegetarian dishes ensures
each guest has options.
Examine the elbow room. Because dining
out has become such a luxury, comfort
should be another key consideration. Look
for a restaurant that provides ample elbow
room so everyone can relax and wont feel
crowded.
Be sure there are places to park. Chances
are, most guests will be driving to the party.
While it seems like an afterthought, the
restaurant should provide ample, and ideally
free, parking. Avoid restaurants that charge
for valet service or inquire if such service
can be included on the tab ahead of time.
Reserve well in advance. If its a truly
special occasion, be sure to begin the process
of finding a restaurant as early as possible
and make a reservation the moment a
decision is made. Reservations can always
be cancelled should things not work out.

the unofficial begin-
ning of summer. Summer does
not actually begin until later
in June, Memorial Day week-
end has become synonymous
with backyard barbecues and
trips to the beach.
Backyard barbecues, in
particular, have become a sta-
ple of Memorial Day weekend
and the focus of many peoples
festivities. This year, consider
the following tips to make
your Memorial Day barbecue
safe and memorable.
Safely locate the grill.
Before any guests arrive or any
fires are lit, make sure the grill
is safely located on flat
ground. Ideally, the grill
should not be on the grass and
should be away from trees or
shrubs and any flammable
materials. If you need lighter
fluid to start a fire, promptly
put it back in storage away
from the grill once the fire has
been lit.
Clean the grill. Memorial
Day marks the opening of
grilling season for many grill
masters. Make sure the grill
has been thoroughly cleaned
and that there are no leftover
ashes from last season clog-
ging the vents. Even if you
thoroughly cleaned the grill at
the end of last season, give it a
once-over with a soapy sponge
at the start of the season to
clean any cobwebs or dirt and
grime that might have accu-
mulated over the winter.
Stock up on charcoal.
Falling short in the charcoal
department is a backyard bar-
becue faux pas that can bring
the festivities to a halt.
Because the weather in late
May can sometimes be unpre-
dictable, make sure you have
extra charcoal on hand should
strong winds or colder temper-
atures make it difficult to
build a strong fire.
Spice things up. Why not
use this years Memorial Day
barbecue to add a little extra
flavor to traditional barbecue
fare? Soak some dried herbs
like rosemary, bay leaves or
oregano in water and add
them to the grill. These fla-
vorful herbs will make the
food taste better and the bar-
becue will likely emit a more
pleasant fragrance as well.
Prepare foods for guests
of varying palates. Vegetarians
and vegans love a good back-
yard barbecue just as much as
their carnivorous friends and
family members. Cook some
vegetable kabobs and prepare
some salads for guests who
dont eat meat. Consider pur-
chasing a smaller grill for veg-
gies only, as vegetarians and
vegans might not prefer to eat
kabobs grilled on the same

I
n the early 1800s Pompton
Lakes was a peaceful coun-
try village with most of the
land divided into farms; many
stretching from river to river.
Five or six houses dotted the
main dirt lane that led from
the furnace at one end to the
gristmill at the other end of
the little community, and
another dozen or so homes on
side roads developed by local
farm families.
Having previously at-
tended the Pompton Plains
Church, around 1812, men
from Pompton Lakes decided
that they should have a
church of their own. A meet-
ing was held on February 20,
1812 and the Certificate of
Incorporation was dated June
8, 1812.
The new church con-
tained 20,000 bricks made
near Pompton Plains at a cost
of $5,943.12, and the
Church at Pompton was
dedicated on October 16,
1814.
The organization of
the congregation was com-
pleted in the spring of 1815
and the first Consistory
including Elders Martin
Ryerson, Thomas Blauvelt,
Philip J. Schuyler and
Nathaniel Douglas; and
Deacons Adrian Post,
Abraham Lyons, Johnson
N. Gould and Peter van
Pelt was elected at a con-
gregational meeting.
At the first Consistory
meeting on June 24, 1815, a
call was extended to the
Reverend Jacob Ten Eyck
Field, who became the first
pastor of the new congrega-
tion with 24 names on the
church roles.
In 1850, the Sanctuary
was a rectangular room with
white walls and a paneled
gallery around three sides.
Boxlike pews were entered by
opening a small door at either
end. The windows were small
panes of clear glass and the
woodwork was white with
mahogany top rails. The pul-
pit was on a platform in the
center front until 1860 when
the north wall was broken
out to permit the building
of a recess for the pulpit.
The choir sat at the back in
the gallery over the center
door, and was accompanied
by the music of a melodeon.
In the 1880s the church
acquired a hand-pumped
organ. The pulpit furniture
was mahogany in the
Empire Period Style. Heat
was provided by two wood-
burning stoves until 1871,
when coal was purchased.
In July 1884, the women
of Pompton Reformed Church
pledged $500 as an initial
contribution for a chapel. By
1911, an additional room was
added to the rear. A larger
extension was again added to
the rear of the chapel in 1928.
As the suburbs grew,
much needed classrooms and
an auditorium were built in
1950. Soon plans were made
for the eventual replacement
of the educational facilities.
Finally in 1974, the two-
level modern brick structure
was completed and named the
Gerrit Heemstra Me-morial
Building ... a tribute to the
late pastor who served
Pompton Reformed Church
for thirty-four years.
And the Pompton
Reformed Church today con-
tinues in prayer and faith and
grows and prospers in the
work of the Lord.

profit organization, is in need of vol-
unteers for various duties.
Volunteers are an integral part of
the professional hospice team that
provides physical, emotional, and
spiritual support to the terminally
ill. Volunteers work directly with
patients and families, providing
respite for caregivers, companion-
ship for patients and families, and
