The last time I spoke to Robert Burs, he was just back from New York, done with the initial sessions for this Madrugada album, the bands sixth. He said it was his best recording experience to date, that he was sure that Madrugada had started to paint their masterpiece. He spoke about one particular session that brought forward songs that elevated their work to a whole other level. Although Robert was famous for his enthusiasm when he initiated his friends to fresh recordings, it became clear to me that this time it was different. As we all know, this eponymously titled album is indeed different. Not just from an artistic perspective, but from a human one. This is the last time we will hear the voice of Robert, the fluid and bluesy sound that became a trademark of the group according to English writer Pierre Perrone (The Independent). It is just about ten years since I first ran into the four young guys that made up the original line-up of what would become the band Madrugada. Four musicians that had brought with them, from their home turfs of Northern Norway, the rocknroll dreams that so many possess and so few succeed to realise. In one perspective the ten years gone by is an eternity, in another it happened just yesterday that Robert and his musketeers convinced me of the validity of their dream. In this time span, this collision between eternity and yesterday, Robert and his co-musicians created a body of work that has changed rock history in Norway. Albums and songs that will stand the test of time and will be referenced the same way Robert quoted his blues heroes. Tom Skjeklesther Halden, Norway, in the dismal year of 2007
