The connecting rod of a horizontal reciprocating engine is 400 mm and stroke length 14 is 200 mm. The mass of the reciprocating parts is 125 kg and that of the connecting rod is 100 kg. The radius of gyration of the connecting rod about an axis through the center of gravity is 120 mm and distance of the center of gravity of the connecting rod from the big end center is 160 mm. The engine runs at 750 rpm. Determine the torque exerted on the crank shaft when the crank has turned 300 from the inner dead center. Solve the problem graphically. Define the following terms i) Coefficient of fluctuation of speed ii) Coefficient of 3 fluctuation of energy. Draw the turning moment diagram of a single cylinder double acting steam engine. 3 A punching machine provided with a single punch makes 20 holes of 30 mm diameter 14 in 20 mm thick plates per minute. The actual punching operation takes place in 1/10 th of the revolution of the crank shaft. The flywheel with a maximum diameter of 1.6 m rotates at 12 times the speed of the crank shaft. Determine the power of the motor assuming the mechanical efficiency to be 92 %. Also determine the cross section dimensions of the flywheel rim if the width is twice the thickness. The ultimate shear strength of the material of the plates is 280 N/mm2. The coefficient of fluctuation of speed is 0.12. The flywheel is made of cast iron with a tensile strength of 6 MPa and a density of 7000 kg/m3. The rim of the flywheel may be assumed to deliver 80 % of the rotational inertia of the flywheel.

Four masses A, B, C and D revolve at equal radii and are equally spaced along a shaft. 10 The mass B is 7 kg. and the masses C and D make angles of 900 and 2400 respectively with the mass B. Find the magnitude of the masses A, C and D and the angular position of A so that the system may be completely balanced.

The driving wheel diameter is 1.8 m. If the hammer blow is not to exceed 45 kN at 100 km/hr, determine i) The fraction of the reciprocating masses to be balanced ii)The variation in the tractive effort iii)The maximum swaying couple.

A mass of 50 kg when suspended using a spring produces a static deflection of 17 11 mm and when in motion experiences a viscous damping force of 250 N at a velocity of 0.3 m/s. Calculate the periodic time of damped vibration. If the mass is then subjected to a periodic disturbing force of maximum value of 200 N and making 2 cycles/s, find the amplitude of the resulting motion. An electric motor is to drive a centrifuge running at four times the motor speed 20 through a spur gear and pinion. The steel shaft from the motor to the gear wheel is 58 mm diameter and L m long. The shaft from the pinion to the centrifuge is 47 mm diameter and 420 mm long. The masses and the radii of gyration of motor and centrifuge are respectively 38.5 kg and 110 mm ; 32 kg and 135 mm. Neglecting the inertia effect of the gears, find the value of L if the gears are to be at the node for torsional oscillation of the system and hence determine the frequency of torsional oscillations. Take the modulus of rigidity to be 84 GN/m2. Refer Fig. 2.

In a Porter governor, each of the four arms is 400 mm long. The upper arms are 10 pivoted on the axis of the sleeve whereas the lower arms are attached to the sleeve at a distance of 45 mm from the axis of rotation. Each ball has a mass of 8 kg and the load on the sleeve is 60 kg. What will be the equilibrium speeds for the two extreme radii of 250 mm and 300 mm rotation of the governor balls? Each wheel of a four-wheeled rear engine automobile has a moment of inertia of 2.4 10 kg.m2 and an effective diameter of 660 mm. The rotating parts of the engine have a moment of inertia of 1.2 kg.m2. The gear ratio of the engine to the back wheel is 3:1. The engine axis is parallel to the rear axle and the crank shaft rotates in the same sense as the road wheels. The mass of the vehicle is 2200 kg and the center of the mass is 550 mm above the road level. The track width of the vehicle is 1.5 m. Determine the limiting speed of the vehicle around a curve with 80 m radius so that all the four wheels maintain contact with the road surface. 3/3
