Deployment Roadmap for Rational ClearQuest Deployment Kit

Deployment Planning

This deployment roadmap describes the core activities necessary to effectively deploy Rational ClearQuest. Environment Begin by discussing your needs and objectives with your Rational account team. Together, you'll come up with an implementation plan that will shorten the "time to value" and get your team productive asSet-Up possible. soon as As you explore this roadmap, youll see that all of these core activities are packaged as services modules that you can deliver yourself or with Rationals helpwhatever works best for you. The Deployment Planning module helps you plan and schedule the activities for your ClearQuest deployment. The results of deployment planning are captured in an Implementation Plan and, if desired, a Deployment Schedule. The Environment Set-Up module helps you work with your IT department to assess your computing environment and to specify the deployment of the ClearQuest server components and the client environment. The results of the assessment are captured in an Environment Specification report. The Usage Model Definition module helps you define effective change management practices for your team. The materials help you efficiently utilize a pre-defined ClearQuest usage model, which addresses many common needs for defect tracking. Your decisions are captured in a Usage Model document. The Installation and Configuration module helps you install ClearQuest according to the Environment Specification and configure your ClearQuest database according to your defined Usage Model. The Rollout to End-Users module helps you facilitate training for end-users on ClearQuest basics, and introduce them to your Usage Model and to the ClearQuest databases they will be using. The Administration Planning module helps you prepare your ClearQuest Administration and Maintenance plan, which addresses topics such as backup and restore procedures, ClearQuest version upgrades and patches, making changes to your schema, end-user support, and so forth. Deployment Planning Module

Deployment Planning

Role

The person who takes responsibility for deployment planning assumes the role of deployment project manager. The tools and guidelines in this module have been prepared especially for the deployment project manager. (See section Role Descriptions on page 7 for more information about this role.) To deliver this module, the deployment project manager needs basic project management skills. 1) As the deployment project manager, your first step is to clearly define your organizations needs and objectives for change management with ClearQuest. Gaining this common understanding of the results you want to achieve is essential not only to planning a successful deployment, but also to implementing effective change management practices for your team. 2) Discuss your desired results with your Rational account team so that together you can determine how ClearQuest should be implemented to achieve those results. Youll also decide whether you would like Rational to help you with particular deployment activities and, if so, which ones. 3) Work with the appropriate parties to plan and schedule the work.

Skills Needed High-level Steps

Module Components

This module consists of the following components: Deployment Planning Guidelines Contains guidance for planning the deployment, including a description of the skill set needed to perform each activity in the deployment, and helpful hints for planning. Implementation Plan Template A template for producing your implementation plan. Captures your current situation, desired results, assumptions, and a description of each deployment activity so that all stakeholders and team members share a common understanding of what you intend to do and why. Deployment Schedule Template For those of you who have Microsoft Project 2000, the deployment schedule template can be filled out with the names of people assigned to tasks and the dates the work will be performed.

Average Effort

The average effort for completing deployment planning is 4 hours; however, it might take more or less time for you, depending on your circumstances.

Environment Set-Up

Role

The person who typically takes responsibility for leading the Environment Set-Up activity is the ClearQuest administrator; however, this person works closely with an IT System Administrator on this activity. (See section Role Descriptions on page 7 for more information about these two roles.) To lead this module, the ClearQuest administrator needs a basic understanding of client-server applications, databases, and, if ClearQuest Web is to be used, web servers. The administrator should take the Rational ClearQuest Administration course prior to this activity. To assist with this module, the IT system administrator needs in-depth knowledge of the computing infrastructure in your organization. 1) Work with the deployment project manager to characterize the intended ClearQuest user community in terms of number of users and their geographic distribution. This information will give you an idea of whether to set up the ClearQuest windows client or ClearQuest Web or both. 2) Meet with the IT system administrator, who is knowledgeable of the hardware, servers, databases, and networks at your company. Together, review the key system requirements for installation of ClearQuest, and decide where to install the system components. 3) Capture your decisions in the ClearQuest Environment Specification template that is provided in this module. Note that the Environment Specification will be used in the installation step, which is described in the Installation and Configuration module.

Usage Model Definition

Role

The person responsible for leading this activity is the ClearQuest administrator; however, the administrator works closely with the software development manager and quality assurance manager to define and validate the usage model. (See section Role Descriptions on page 7 for more information about these roles.) To lead this activity, the ClearQuest administrator needs to be familiar with change management issues and best practices, and must have taken the Rational ClearQuest Administration course. The software development manager and/or quality assurance manager must have authority to approve the usage model for the development team. 1) The ClearQuest administrator works with the software development manager and quality assurance manager to define an effective usage model for change management. Note: ClearQuest has an out-of-the-box usage model (or schema) that can accommodate most needs for defect tracking and is quick and easy to implement, once you have attended administrator training. The guidance and templates provided in this kit are based on the assumption that you will use the out-of-the-box DefectTracking schema as your starting point and that you will implement only one ClearQuest user database. Tips for modifying your schema are provided, along with advice about when you might need to seek guidance or assistance from Rational for advanced customizations. If you need extensive customizations, its usually more costeffective to get Rational assistance. 2) The ClearQuest administrator documents the proposed model in the ClearQuest Usage Model document, which can be circulated to key stakeholders for feedback, as appropriate. 3) The software development manager and/or quality assurance manager approves the final usage model.

The person who typically leads the installation and configuration activity is the ClearQuest administrator; however, this person works closely with the IT system administrator. (See section Role Descriptions on page 7 for more information about these roles.) To deliver this module, the ClearQuest administrator must have attended the Rational ClearQuest Administration course. You should also have experience administering relational databases and writing scripts in either Microsoft VBScript or Perl. If you will be installing ClearQuest Web, you should also be familiar with Web servers. The IT system administrator needs to be able to install software on corporate servers. Note: If you plan to extend the out-of-the-box DefectTracking usage model in any significant way, be sure to discuss your need for customizations with your Rational account team to see if it makes sense to get some Rational assistance with implementing them. Even a small amount of assistance can sometimes save considerable time and effort on your part.

Skills Needed

High-level Steps

1) Install ClearQuest according to the information captured in the Environment Specification. 2) Configure the ClearQuest schema according to the Usage Model. Set up administrator and user accounts, and configure client access.

The deployment project manager and the ClearQuest administrator both participate in the rollout to end-users. (See section Role Descriptions on page 7 for more information about these roles.) To deliver this module, the rollout team needs to be able to explain the change management practices and usage model, and the basic operations of the tool. 1) Install ClearQuest client software on all designated end-user machines. 2) Facilitate the delivery of end-user training. 3) Introduce your team to the usage model and to the ClearQuest databases that have been set up for them. Answer any questions they have, and try to gauge how much follow-on mentoring and support they might need. 4) Provide mentoring and support to your end-users as needed as they begin using ClearQuest in their daily work.

Skills Needed High-level Steps

Module Components

The module consists of the following components: Rollout to End-Users Guidelines Provides guidance on the high-level steps outlined above. Also provides pointers to additional resources on RDN and elsewhere. Client Installation Checklist A worksheet to help you plan and document the client installations (optional). Rational Developer Network Registration Instructions Describes the various resources available on the Rational Developer Network and explains how to register.

Average Effort

Each end user is likely to spend between 6-8 hours to learn the tool to the point where they can use it effectively in their daily work. The effort the rollout team spends on this activity depends on how many end-users your have and how much support and mentoring they need.
