Over the past several months the Board of Education has devoted many hours to the recruitment and selection of a new Superintendent. This position was advertised widely throughout New York State. The Board made every effort to involve the entire school community in the selection process. An on-line survey was conducted to solicit feedback from the staff and community regarding the skills and attributes that they considered essential for a new Superintendent. Over four hundred (400) individuals took the time to respond to this survey. In March the Board narrowed the field of candidates from twenty-eight (28) to six (6) individuals for personal interviews. Following these interviews three (3) finalist candidates were identified to go forward in the process and interview with students, faculty, administrators, administrative assistants, support staff and community. The resumes of the three (3) candidates selected for initial interviews were posted on the districts website. Those members of the district and community that elected to participate in the interview process provided the Board with over forty (40) single spaced pages of written comments regarding their perceptions of each candidate. The Board reviewed these comments on May 7, 2012 and used this information in coming to closure on the selection of a new Superintendent of Schools. The Board would like to thank those individuals that took the time to participate in the interview process. Their positive portrayal of the school system and community proved to be a significant asset in the recruitment process. With that as a backdrop we are pleased to announce that the Board unanimously selected Mr. Peter Turner as the next Superintendent of the Carthage Central School District effective July 1, 2012. Mr. Turner is no stranger to the district. From 2000 until 2007 he served the district as the High School Principal. Mr. Turner is a graduate of SUNY Oswego where he completed a Bachelors Degree in Secondary Education. He also completed a Masters of Science Degree from SUNY Potsdam and a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Educational Administration from SUNY Cortland. Mr. Turner and his wife Jeanette have a son and daughter. Their daughter Ashley is a student at SUNY Oswego, while their son Matthew and his wife reside in Lowville, New York. Please join us in welcoming Mr. Turner and his family back to the Carthage Community. The Board would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Waligory for her hard work and steadfast leadership as Interim Superintendent.
