SYNOPSIS The dissipation of excess pore water pressure, accompanied by volume change is called consolidation. Consolidation settlement is a time-dependent process that occurs in saturated fine-grained soils which have low permeability. It is not uncommon to have a consolidation settlement of more than 1.0 m when building an embankment on the deep seated soft marine clay found in the coastal areas of Malaysia, e.g. Klang, Butterworth, Parit Buntar, etc. In this respect, the relevant design issues include estimation of magnitude and time rate of consolidation settlement, and solving of consolidation problems. This talk will explain the process of consolidation settlement, Terzaghis one-dimensional consolidation theory and solution, and illustrate how the compression parameters can be determined from a one-dimensional consolidation test. Calculations to estimate magnitude and time rate of consolidation settlement will also be demonstrated. Lastly, the use of prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) to expedite consolidation settlement will be discussed.

BIODATA Ir. Dr. Chan Swee Huat is a registered Professional Engineer with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia since 2005. He st graduated with a 1 Class Honors Degree in Civil & Structural Engineering from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1997. He obtained his Ph.D degree from the National University of Singapore in 2003. He worked as a Geotechnical Engineer in SSP Geotechnics Sdn. Bhd. for about 5 years before he joined Dr C.T. Toh Consultant as a Resident Engineer for about 2 years. He is currently a lecturer in the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, responsible for teaching the geotechnical engineering and critical state soil mechanics. He also serves as an advisor to Geo-Excel Consultants Sdn. Bhd., a geotechnical engineering consulting firm. For the past 15 years, he has involved himself in analysis, design and construction of various geotechnical works and aspects including shallow & deep foundations, deep excavations & earth retaining structures, slope stability analyses & stabilization, seepage analyses, assessments of tunneling methods, soil improvement techniques, geotechnical failure investigations, 3-D finite element analyses, etc.
