The Higher Self in Christopher Brennans Poems

Esotericism, Romanticism, Symbolism
Katherine Barnes
September 2006 ISBN-10 90 04 15221 0 ISBN-13 978 9004152 21 2 Hardback (xii, 324 pp.) List price EUR 129.- / US$ 168. Aries Book Series, 2 In 1914 a remarkable poetic work appeared in Sydney, Australia, written in the form of a Symbolist livre compos by one of Stephane Mallarms earliest admirers, Christopher Brennan. The book, simply titled Poems, shows that Brennan was exploring pressing religious issues of his time. He melded Western esoteric currents such as alchemy and Rosicrucianism with Romantic literature and philosophy and French Symbolist theory. This book argues that the focus of Poems is the notion of a higher self. It is the rst major study of Brennans work in this broad religious, philosophical and literary context. Its argument is supported by evidence from Brennans own library and the holdings of the Sydney library in which he worked.

Katherine Barnes, Ph.D. (2003) in English,

Australian National University, is a lecturer in English at the Australian Defence Force Academy campus of the University of NSW. She is the author of several articles on Brennan and co-editor of Words for Their Own Sake: The Pursuit of Literature in an Economic Rationalist World (2004).

The Sacricial Body and the Day of Doom

Alchemy and Apocalyptic Discourse in the Protestant Reformation
Urszula Szulakowska
August 2006 ISBN-10 90 04 15025 0 ISBN-13 978 9004150 25 6 Hardback (xii, 180 pp., 56 pp.) List price EUR 119.- / US$ 155. Aries Book Series, 1 This study positions Paracelsian alchemy, medicine and medical physiology within the apocalyptic discourse of the Protestant Reformation. A comparison is made between alchemical theory concerning the perfectibility of prime matter and Christian eschatological doctrine concerning human salvation through Christs sacrice in universal history and in the ritual of the mass. A detailed analysis is made of the engraved illustrations constituting an integral part of the alchemical medicine and physiology of Heinrich Khunrath, Stefan Michelspacher, Jacob Boehme, Abraham von Franckenberg and Robert Fludd.

Urszula Szulakowska is a Lecturer in art-history at the University of Leeds. She has produced many publications on the history of alchemical illustration including The Alchemy of Light (Brill, 2000).

Erudite and impassioned, Katherine Barnes makes a powerful case for rediscovering Brennans beautiful and challenging poetry. By contextualising his work within the thought and poetry of Europe, particularly French and German romanticism, mysticism and symbolism, she allows us to see his poems in all their intricate richness, and to hear their wonderfully intense system of echoes. Not just Australians, but lovers of poetry worldwide owe her a debt of gratitude. Rosemary Lloyd, Rudy Professor of French Indiana University.
