Assignment 1: Project Analysis and Management Submitted by: Harrison Ruben

Project Proposal
Title: Spreading the message through music: a lyrical approach to HIV/AIDS education in marginalized communities.

1. Executive Summary Besides sport, music is another instrument that can be used to congregate a large number of people from across all sectors of society especially the youth. Therefore it becomes easier to pass across to them not only some entertainment but pertinent messages that relate to their physical, social and mental well being. This is a pilot project to use music as a platform for spreading HIV/AIDS related messages to children youth and adults from areas that have been identified as hot spots of HIV/AIDS due to the very high indices of prevalence in Maputo City and Province. This project aims at increasing the knowledge levels of issues related to HIV/AIDS among children, youth and the community at large as way of empowering them to assume responsible behavior and also make correct decisions in sexual matters. 2. Project Description The project Spreading the message through music: a lyrical approach to HIV/AIDS education in marginalized communities is a further attempt aimed at educating children, youth and adults from rural communities about the dangers of getting infected by the HIV virus and how they can avoid being infected. The project will also aim at educating those who are infected and affected how they can live positively with the virus and achieve reasonable levels of life quality. The project will be implemented by The Rhythm Crew Musical Group which is a well known and popular community based youth initiative operating in Maputo Province and registered with the Ministry of Youth and Sport as a youth association and also with the Ministry of Education and Culture as a cultural group. This musical group has gained widespread recognition from both ministries for their effort in educating children, youth and adults in cross cutting issues pertinent for health and community development such as gender issues, child protection and rights and disease prevention through music. In this project Rhythm Crew will be engaged in providing musical shows in targeted beneficiary communities with the aim of teaching them about HIV/AIDS. Songs to be played will have a special bearing on HIV/AIDS issues which can be openly discussed and therefore raise awareness about them. 3. Beneficiary (Market) Analysis

The targeted beneficiaries for this project are children, youth and adults from selected communities and schools in Maputo City and Maputo Province. These will benefit from HIV/AIDS messaging and musical entertainment free of charge. Research has shown that the HIV/AIDS prevalence will almost double in 2010 in the City and Province of Maputo. Therefore it is imperative that people especially the youth who are starting to be sexually active be empowered to make correct decisions on sexually related issues. Children and youth enjoy listening to music and watching live shows. Rhythm Crew is a popular band composed of youth and plays music that is compatible with the current generation. It is therefore easy to attract large audiences and reach many people. It is important to point out that this initiative is unique in the sense that for the first time a popular musical group is being engaged to provide shows in schools and at community centers free of charge and to teach about HIV/AIDS issues. The attendance at these shows will be very high and therefore the message will reach a lot of people. People will not be forced to come for the shows; actually they will flock on their own will. 4. Operations Rhythm Crew will work from their studio in Maputo City. Additional equipment will be required to boost their capacity to stage live shows in town and in rural settings, in open space and closed venues such as a powerful generator and P.A. sound system. A company will be contracted to mount stages. New musical instruments will need to be bought (electric guitars, keyboards and drums). Banners, pamphlets and flyers will be required to reinforce the messages.

5. Objectives 1. To raise awareness among children, youth and adults about the dangers of HIV/AIDS. 2.
