also assist Fiji by growing tourism and interest in the nation, said David Pflieger, Air Pacifics Managing Director and CEO. Our airline is one of Fijis largest companies employing 800 people directly and an estimated 8,000 or so indirectly, and we fly in over 60% of all visitors who come to Fiji, so it only makes sense for us to embrace our uniquely Fijian culture and spirit, characteristics which have seen Fiji consistently recognised by consumers as one of the worlds friendliest countries and no doubt helped us win a recent award as one of the top ten small airlines in the world.
Pflieger added, Our rebranding is part Voreqe Bainimarama of an overall turnaround plan a plan that is working well and should, with continued focus and effort, help us thrive and grow as the preferred airline of the South Pacific. In 2010/2011 Air Pacific and Pacific Sun carried a combined 1.1million passengers on 15,000 flights. This represents a year-on-year increase of 37,000 additional passengers which helped increase revenue by F$40 million at the same time non-fuel costs were reduced by F$13 million. Wages Council chair Father Kevin Barr. Fiji will soon have a national minimum wage to cover workers not represented by unions or wages councils. It will be a wage below which no worker in the country should be paid, Wages Council chair Father Kevin Barr told the media. He revealed workers represented by the councils were earning wages below the poverty line. Father Barr said they are also working towards a wage increase for workers covered by the garment, security, wholesale and retail, road transport, manufacturing, mining and quarrying and building sectors in July. He said he cannot reveal the proposed increases until they are gazetted. Father Barr said the ten Wages Councils represent over 60 per cent of those in full time employment where in each council there are two employers representatives, two workers representatives and two independent representatives. "All of those we represent are earning below the current poverty line of $185 a week," he said.
Forty-six shops have closed in Nadi town following the severe floods in March. Losses to small business amounts to about $40 million while losses to residential properties are just over $12m. The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry says a survey also revealed looting during the floods and they are trying to get the exact figures and the names of the shops affected. Chamber president Dr Ram Raju said 23 businesses had insurance cover. On the idea to relocate Nadi town, 26 members voted for the relocation while 108 voted against. The survey found that most people
favoured a Nadi river diversion as the best option and widening, straightening and dredging of the river to reduce risks. Dr Raju said a major consensus is for the flood warning sirens to be installed and the ground floor of buildings to be converted to car parks and shopping centres located on the first floor. He said the chamber had also asked the Prime Minister for an independent inquiry on the extremely poor weather reporting. The chamber also wants special grants for all its small and medium enterprise as Nadi's path to recovery may take a very long time.
FIJI needs to adopt or enact laws that are relevant to the country.
These were the sentiments shared by Attorney-General and Minister for Industry and Trade Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum at the opening of the 34th International Organisation for Standardisation Consumer Policy Committee summit at Nadi earlier this week. "In Fiji, for example, we have adopted laws from Australia and various other jurisdictions," he said. "However, these laws have been drafted for the specific needs of those jurisdictions, meaning every provision of these laws will not necessarily be appropriate for Fiji." He cited parts of the Land Transport Act as an example and specifically in the area of fines for not wearing a seatbelt is $80. He explained that an $80 fine in Australia was appropriate given peoples earnings there and the same however, did not apply here. "An $80 fine in Fiji for someone who is earning $150 per week is more than 50 per cent of their income. So what does that mean? "It means that it leaves room open for bribery and corruption. These are some of the hard core realities that we need to be aware of. "That when applying laws, when putting in place provisions, they need to be tailored for that particular jurisdiction." He said one of the first changes done by the Bainimarama Government was reduction in penalties for seatbelt infringement.

The Fijian Government confirmed that talks are currently ongoing with international companies who have shown interest in bringing over movie making equipments to be rented out to producers. This was confirmed by the Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum who said Film Fiji is currently talking to some companies to pursue this. He made the comments when asked if Government would be giving Film Fiji grants to purchase lighting, sound and other equipments which could be hired out to film makers to generate revenue.
We have had interested companies talking with Film Fiji in trying to bring over equipments to be based in Fiji, he said. Minister Sayed Khaiyum referred to the amount of equipments brought in saying that once Fiji would have its own equipments, things would be easier as film makers would not need to bring over gear as well as people. If you see they have brought in tonnes of equipments and people and once we start training our own people to be able to use these equipments that would make it a lot easier for film makers.
Girmit Day is of great significance to Fiji as it is a time to remember the tremendous difficulties faced by the people who came here to unfamiliar circumstances, said the Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, His Excellency Vinod Kumar. Speaking at the Girmit Day celebrations at the Indian Cultural Centre, Mr Kumar said that while the Girmit era finished in 1916, the sacrifices made by those that travelled miles from their homeland will always be remembered. The Girmit era saw the first ship, the Leonidas carrying Indian indentured labourers to Fiji in 1879 to work in plantations around the country. Their hard work has paid dividends as their grandchildren and great grandchildren have inherited the fruits of their labour. It is remarkable that the Girmityas adapted to their new work place and homeland, faced difficult living conditions and at the same time preserved their traditions, language and culture, Mr Kumar said. Highlighting the significant contribution made by the Girmityas to Fijis
economy and society, Mr Kumar said it is encouraging to see the descendants continuous input towards the countrys progress and prosperity. This is especially important at the present moment as the international community is looking at how Fiji and its people move forward to build a better and stronger Fiji. Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has just had a successful visit to India. Both India and Fiji are developing and non-aligned countries and we would continue to work together to ensure the inclusive social development of our people, Mr Kumar added. Indias envoy to Fiji said the visiting Indian National Defence College delegation is yet another instance of the growing cooperation and interaction between Fiji and India. And of course we have yet another Indian crew shooting a film in Nadi. To mark the 133rd Girmit Day, teachers and students of the Indian Cultural Centre presented cultural items to depict the early Girmit days.

Ms Mohini Narayin at the official handing over donation to Mrs Ulamila Saioni, Manager of Mahaffy Girls Home in Domain Road, Suva The young girls living at Mahaffy Girls Home had a reason to smile this week after receiving a timely donation to provide them to a good start to a new school term. The donation packages comprising of school stationeries, shoes, bags and clothings along with afternoon tea for the girls was made by possible by the Gift of Love Network that coordinated the delivery of this assistance by Ms Mohini Narayin, an Australian citizen. During the official handing over of the donation, Ms Mohini Narayin said that it was a wonderful experience for her to be at Mahaffy Girls Home to assist in providing the basic needs of the girls. I feel great to have made this contribution. It gives me happiness to see the smile on the faces of these girls. I am grateful for this opportunity and certainly this is not my last visit here, for I will also consider assisting them with their other needs like cooking stove and its indeed a privilege to have made a positive difference in this way, Ms Narayin added. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation permanent secretary Mr Govind Sami said the assistance would fulfill the educational needs for the girls at the home. The Social welfare ministry acknowledges this timely donation to help Mahaffy Girls Home with educational resources, Mr Sami said. Ms Kaajal Kumar, a representative of Gift of Love Network highlighted how their organisation works towards addressing the needs of disadvantaged children in our communities. We see this as a great opportunity to bridge the social gap that exists for underprivileged children. Our network works with Fijians around the globe and we have done similar programs for Boys Centre and Happy Home, Ms Kumar said. The Mahaffy Girls Home is state residential care home for girls aged between 12 to 19 who are either orphans or in need of care and protection under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Welfare. Currently a total of 14 girls live at this Home and last month a Memorandum of Agreement (MOU) was signed between Ministry of Social Welfare and Global Compassion as the new service provider for the management of Mahaffy Girls Home in Suva.

1. Miss World Fiji Torika Watters will now represent the country at the Miss World Pageant in Bali next year. Watters says this has been confirmed to her by Miss World Fiji national director Andhy Blake. Watters saiod in a statement that Blake opened his laptop in front of her and paraphrased an email from Miss World chief executive Julia Morley to send the first runner-up Koini Vakaloloma as she was ineligible to compete on the ground of her age. We then held a meeting the next day at which he told me to officially inform the other girls that I would not be going, she said. The disappointed 16-year-old girl said she was becoming very uncomfortable with the situation. I was worried about the lies, the deception, the lack of transparency and the lack of professionalism, she added. I knew there were issues with money, some of the girls had not received the promised prize money and were unhappy. I am sad it has come to this and I wanted the public to hear directly without any outside interference. Commenting on the hate posts by people on the Miss World Fiji facebook page, Watters said she is proud of her identity and has never considered her people as racists. I would like to state that I have no involvement in any of this underhand processes and I have been blind to this entire drama going on behind the scene. Miss World Fiji organisers on their Facebook page have stated that Watters has not been stripped of her title and she will always be the Miss World Fiji winner. They also apologised to her family and have also assured the winners of the special categories that their cheques will be delivered. We wish her well in her future endeavours and offer an apology to her, her beautiful family and friends for any distress this competition would have brought upon her." Proceeds of the fundraising done for mental health awareness by the Miss World Fiji contestants will also be handed to the St Giles Hospital The organisers say they will also file legal action against anyone who has accused the organisation of any wrongdoing. We are taking legal action against a few key individuals that have brought disrepute to our brand including a few contestants that have spread numerous claims that has been all but false, said organisers. First runner-up Koini Vakaloloma will replace Watters at the Miss World Pageant in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China in August.

$3M Crematorium
Fiji's first LPG (liquid petroleum gas) fired crematorium is the result of extensive consultation with and support of local secular and religious segments. Owner of the $3 million Dignified Cremations Limited crematorium Maurice Ruggiero said the modern computer-controlled, LPG gasfired cremation furnace included a ceremonial building with a sitting capacity of over 100 people and another 300 standing. Mr Ruggiero, a building services consulting engineer, said extensive consultation with the community indicated the pressing need for a modern, clean and well set out cremation facility. "Over the past decade Fiji's society has evolved and become more sophisticated, yearning for the choice to cremate a loved one's remains in a venue where well organised ceremonies can take place in a clean, expedient and dignified manner," Mr Ruggiero said. A typical traditional open pyre cremation took between eight and 12 hours to completely consume a body, he said. The gas-fired crematorium would reduce a body to ashes in approximately 80 minutes, he said. Located on 3.5 acres of State land adjacent to the Nasinu Cemetery, the crematorium can be accessed through Adi Lady Davila Ganilau Rd just off the Kings Rd. Mr Ruggiero said the land was especially and conditionally leased by government to Dignified Cremations for the sole purpose of establishing a modern crematorium. "We are very grateful for the great support we received from government and the prime minister for this important project," he said. The crematorium is an extension of the Ruggiero family business which deals in the funeral industry. "Our sister company Beautiful Monuments has been fabricating tombstones in Fiji since 1980. The establishment of Dignified Cremations Ltd is a natural progression of our family's long involvement in the funeral industry in Fiji from its original roots in Southern Italy," Mr Ruggiero said. "Families will be given fine powder ashes as a result of this type of cremation. This will completely eliminate the chance of large bones being discarded on our beaches and shoreline," he said adding that ashes would be placed in biodegradable clay urns. The use of biodegradable clay urns, consistent with environment friendly principles adhered to by the company, eliminates the use of plastic bags, ice cream boxes and other unsuitable containers which are often thrown at sea with the ashes, he said. "A lot has been said recently in regard to the control and prohibition of cutting mangrove resources from our shoreline. Much of this mangrove is cut to serve as fuel for traditional cremations. This new LPG-fired crematorium will see the elimination of mangrove as a fuel for cremation purposes," Mr Ruggiero said. The state-of-the-art crematorium offers complete funeral services and is nondenominational. Dignified Cremations Limited founder Maurice Ruggiero said the cremation services ranged from $2600 to $3500. "The ceremonial building features a large LCD screen and PA system which will allow photos of the person whose life is being celebrated to be shown during the ceremony," he said.

A 49-year-old former police officer was sentenced to 18 months jail after he admitted to stealing $8,401.60 from a crime scene last year. Etuate Naqau was convicted by Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili. Magistrate Ratuvili said the act was breach of trust as a police officer is supposed to be entrusted with police exhibits from a crime scene. But instead of placing into police custody, you had taken the cash home and used it for your personal gain." The court heard that the incident happened when the accused was a
police officer and had attended to a robbery call at Rooster Poultry Company. The court heard that the accused was remorseful for his actions, is married, had suffered humiliation as a result of the trial and thus sought a non custodial sentence so that he could find work and pays back the money. Chief Magistrate Ratuvili said even though the sentence is below two years , the court would not suspend the sentence as the act committed by the accused is a violation of trust and furthermore has brought disrepute.

India will continue to work closely with Fiji to ensure the inclusive social development of the citizens of the two non-aligned nations, says Indian High Commissioner Vinod Kumar. Kumar made the comment while addressing guests during the Girmit Day celebration at the Indian Culture Centre in Suva. It is good to see that the descendants of those who adopted Fiji as their homeland have made significant contribution to the economy and society of their country, he said. The good wishes of the people of India are always with them and we hope they would continue to contribute to the progress and prosperity of Fiji. This is perhaps especially important at the present moment as the international community is looking at how Fiji and its people move forward to build a better and stronger Fiji. Prime Minister Commodore Bainimarama has just had a successful visit to India and the two countries are working closely for the betterment of our citizens. Also present were Chief Justice Anthony Gates, Land Force Commander of RFMF Col Mosese Tikoitoga, and vice chancellor of FNU Dr Ganesh Chand, vice chancellor of University of Fiji Professor Mahendra Kumar, Justice Nazhat Shamim and Justice Davendra Pathik. Classical ghazals, patriotic numbers and some Girmit era songs were performed live before a catwalk which was the major attraction of the evening. The catwalk which was choreographed by Shobna Chanel and performed by Kathak students at the ICC depicted the life of people in the Girmit era, paying special attention to their attire. The models walked on stage with original jewelries and artifacts which were used during the olden age. Girmit Day is celebrated on May 14 every year. On this day in 1879,

Fiji police cancelled a permit for the countrys first gay parade. Fijis lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community were to parade to commemorate the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia, Intersexes and Queers (LGBTIQ). In a statement, the organizers say they were advised by the police that we didnt realize this was a parade for gays and lesbians. The police told the organizers they had received a directive from the Ministry of Defence to cancel the parade.
This is a violation and denial of human rights. One of the key components of democracy or any democratization process is the protection of freedom of expression and opinion. Kaur said the government had assured the public that all groups and the people of this country will be heard and included in any process. Cancelling the permit because it was for the promotion and protection of LGBTIQ rights is a concern. Homosexuality had been decriminalized by the Crime Decree 2010.

Irshad Hussein, 27, is serving four months in jail after being convicted of obtaining money by false pretence and one count of conspiracy. The court had heard the facts of the case were that, the victim read an advertisement in Fiji Times regarding an Australian male looking for an honest, nice lady for marriage. Her father called the contact number given in the advertisement and the coaccused answered the call pretending to be the uncle of the accused, Irshad who wanted to get married. They met at a restaurant and agreed to get married. After few weeks co accused called the complainant to open up a bank account saying that they want $3000 to be paid to the embassy for the purpose of migration. On February 10 the accused with another met the complainant at Australian Embassy, obtained a migration booklet paying $18.00. The complainant withdrew $3000.00 from ANZ bank and gave the co-accused in alue for yourthe bank. dollar Thereafter the complainant and her rtise in father were dropped at McDonalds near USP and accused left in another taxi. No receipt was given to the complainant for the $3000 and she l Free: 1 866 840 2885 felt suspicious and reported to police. During investigation it was revealed that accused was not an Australian
citizen. Hussein appealed against his conviction and sentence on the grounds that the learned Magistrate erred in fact and in law in; incorrectly assuming that the accused, who was unrepresented, had understood the charge and consequences of pleading guilty. Secondly not allowing the accused sufficient time to seek legal representation. Presiding judge Justice Priyantha Fernando said taking into account the sentencing judgment the learned Magistrate has considered is correct. This was a serious offence which was pre-planned and well calculated. To deceive the victim, the accused with the co-accused started by advertising on Fiji Times. The learned Magistrate has given good and sufficient reasons for taking 3 years as his starting point. In this case in addition to the meeting of minds between the two accused persons to commit the offence of obtaining money by false pretence, the overt acts were committed to facilitate their conspiracy. The degree of conspiracy in this case is relatively higher. I find that it is appropriate to give a discount of 2 and half years instead of 2 years for the mitigating factors. Justice Fernando allowed the appeal against the sentence set aside the sentence of 4 years and substitute a sentence of 3 and a half years imprisonment. Therefore the final sentence is 3 and a half years imprisonment with a non parole period of 2 and half years.
PACIFIC Island countries, including Fiji, are easy targets for traders exporting low, sub-standard and counterfeit goods. However, Attorney-General and Minister for Industry and Trade Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said Fiji was leading the Pacific in addressing the trade of counterfeit goods. Speaking at the opening of the 34th International Organisation for Standardisation Consumer Policy Committee summit at Nadi earlier this week, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said despite the huge challenges posed by counterfeit goods and trade, government had taken real steps to address the issue. "With modernised protection laws, institutional structures, and a representative consumer body, Fiji has set the pace for the Pacific in the area of consumer protection," he said. "Extensive studies in the region indicate that most Pacific Island countries do not have basic standards and conformance laws to address the issues and the needs of consumers. "Since 2009, the Bainimarama
government has amended and introduced over 212 laws to update the archaic provisions that were in place since the colonial era. "The revamping of our laws also included increased consumer protection," said Mr Sayed-Khaiyum. Consumer Council of Fiji chief executive officer Premila Kumar applauded the move by government to address counterfeit trade and upgrading of Fiji's laws to improve consumer protection. "One of the biggest problems facing PICs is imitation or counterfeit goods," she said. "Fiji, along with the Pacific, has embraced trade liberalisation and deregulation as part of the global village and we are trying our level best to keep pace with consumer protection. "We applaud the comments made by the A-G that government is reviewing consumer protection laws to better protect consumers in the country. "The reason this is urgently needed is because of the huge leap in technology and the sophistication of the trade in counterfeit goods," said Mrs Kumar.

A woman spent her partner's money, despite knowing it came from an $8 million deposit mistakenly put into his bank account, a New Zealand court has heard. Kara Mary-Jo Hurring, one of New Zealand's so-called runaway millionaires, has pleaded not guilty to charges of theft, fraud and moneylaundering involving $200,000. The Rotorua District Court heard that Hurring was living with her then partner Hui Gao when he excitedly swore one night that he was rich.
It is alleged Gao had applied for an $80,000 overdraft for his struggling business, but was given $8 million by Westpac bank by mistake. Gao allegedly transferred the bulk of the money to other accounts and fled to Hong Kong while Hurring stayed behind, using his ATM card to make withdrawals before also leaving the country. About $3 million has not yet been recovered. Gao, a Roturua petrol station owner, was arrested late last year and is on bail awaiting trial.

An American brewery company has apologised for naming a beer after Hindu goddess "Kali" and said it is currently scrambling to rename the product, amidst protest in the Indian parliament. The "Kali Ma" beer which was scheduled for launch on Tuesday has now been postponed till the Portlandbased company Burnside Brewing Co finds a new name to it. "In response to pleas from the Hindu community we have decided to postpone the limited release of "Kalima" our imperial wheat ale flavoured with Indian spices and Scotch-Bonnet peppers," the company said in a statement posted on its Facebook page. "It is NEVER our intention at Burnside to offend or alienate any race, creed, religion or sexual orientation. The inspiration for the beer label simply came from a favourite childhood movie in the "Indiana Jones" series and we were unaware that it could be offensive to anyone," it said. "We are currently scrambling to rename the beer and intend to release it soon afterwards. To those who have been patiently waiting, we humbly ask that you wait just a little longer and to anyone we have offended we sincerely apologise," said Burnside Brewing Co. "Kali-Ma" the beer was earlier announced as spiced wheat ale
involving cardamom, fenugreek, cumin, India dandicut peppers, etc., and showed the picture of Goddess with four arms and three severed heads. Strongly objecting to the US Company launching the beer brand named after Goddess Kali, a demand was made in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that US Ambassador to India should be summoned and asked to apologise for it. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Ravi Shankar Prasad of BJP said it is a serious and sensitive issue that hurt the sentiments of Indians. "Summon US Ambassador to India ... and make him apologise for this," he said condemning the act and demanded a statement from External Affairs Minister. "The advertisement for the beer read 'Come worship the black one Kali as the ultimate reality or Brahman' ... with a picture of the Goddess. Earlier also a picture of Goddess Laxmi was displayed in a toilet...picture of God was put on bra...Lord Ganesha was displayed as a sex object in a talk show," he said demanding India to take up the issue with US. Nevada-based Hindu activist Rajan Zed, who first raised the issue with the company, welcomed the decision. Such trivialisation of Goddess Kali was disturbing to the Hindus world over, Zed said in a statement.
IN days past, it was common to hear: "Will you take a cheque?'' In future, you may be more likely to hear: "What's a cheque?'' Over the past decade, the use of cheques in Australia's payments system has fallen by more than 60 per cent as consumers favour more efficient and cheaper electronic alternatives, says the payments industry's self-regulatory body, the Australian Payments Clearing Association (APCA). In the past three years alone, cheque use has declined by over one-third. "As volumes continue to drop, cheques are likely to become a niche service,'' APCA chief executive Chris Hamilton said in a statement. The APCA released its report: The Decline of Cheques - Building a Bridge to the Digital Economy. The APCA said 75 per cent of Australians no longer used cheques, and the trend away from cheques was likely to continue as the digital economy expanded. Cheques also cost more. The APCA said the average cost of cheques to the community was about $7.69 per cheque compared to less than $1.21 for each electronic payment. But five per cent of people said they would struggle to find an alternative to cheques. Those groups most likely to be affected as cheques continue to decline were the elderly, rural dwellers and not-forprofit organisations. Access and usability issues made it hard for these groups to move away from cheques and share in the benefits of the emerging digital economy. The APCA called upon financial institutions to consider ways of improving customers' access to electronic funds transfer payment options, especially small businesses and not-for-profit organisations. Financial institutions could also consider providing assisted computer payment facilities in branches for customers to make online payments. The APCA also recommended that federal, state and local governments develop cross-government policies for payments use that promoted electronic payments.

Mickey Mouse Gives Gay Marriage Beijing Launches Crackdown On Thumbs Up In Japan Illegal Foreigners
Most illegal workers are believed to be working as language teachers and housekeepers Beijing authorities have launched a 100-day crackdown on foreigners who stay or work in the city illegally. Local police said those who entered China illegally, overstayed their visas or worked without proper permits would be punished. Officers would conduct visa checks in places across the city that was popular for foreigners, police said. Beijing has become increasingly attractive to foreigners as the Chinese economy has boomed. The crackdown will continue until the end of August, police said. Local media report that areas to be targeted include the bar district of Sanlitun and areas around university campuses. Posting on its official microblog site, Beijing police said common offenders included international students who picked up work in violation of their visa conditions. The police urged local people to provide information on illegal immigrants. It is not clear what prompted the move. State media said 13,000 illegal overstayers and workers had been reported in the capital in the last four years, citing official figures. A public security bureau spokesman, quoted in China Daily, said it was not linked to video footage - watched by millions on the internet - showing the alleged attempted indecent assault of a Chinese woman by a British visitor in Beijing. A bilingual editorial in the Global Times urged the Chinese government to take swift action against illegal immigrants but warned that "mishandling this problem may lead to diplomatic friction".
Higashi (left) and her partner Hiroko (right) showing their "Thank you" messages to Mickey Mouse at the Tokyo Disneyland in Urayasu. JUST days after President Barack Obama came out in favour of gay marriage, another supporter of homosexual unions emerged in Japan: Mickey Mouse. Despite their having no legal status, same sex couples are able to hold fairytale wedding ceremonies at hotels inside the popular Tokyo Disney Resort, including at the Cinderella Castle, a company spokeswoman said. News of the unions came to light when Koyuki Higashi, 27, inquired about marrying her female partner at the resort. A member of staff who answered the call said there would be no problem with their marrying, provided they dressed "like a man and a woman", Higashi wrote on her blog. The staff member explained a same-sex wedding would create "repercussions" among visitors to the park if both brides were wearing wedding dresses or both grooms wore tuxedos, the blog added. However, a few days later, the resort operator got back in touch to say their initial response had been wrong and gay couples were free to mix and match their attire. "We have never refused an application for a same-sex wedding at hotels here," a spokeswoman at Milial Resort Hotels, a subsidiary of Tokyo Disney Resort, told the media. "One of our staff members was mistaken when explaining about outfits for a same-sex wedding," she said. But she added gay and lesbian couples were not allowed to exchange marriage vows at the onsite chapel "because of Christian teaching". Homosexuality in Japan is widely accepted but not openly discussed. Last week Obama became the first sitting US president to openly back same-sex marriage, an issue that sharply divides America.
A CANADIAN man has filed a $2.35 million lawsuit after Ottawa police officers allegedly roughed him up outside the Australian High Commission. Ziad Chebib, a Canadian citizen born in Lebanon, lived in Australia for 10 years until he was deported in 2010. Mr Chebib claims he was peacefully protesting his deportation outside the Australian High Commission in Ottawa in 2010, including pitching a tent, but was arrested and suffered injuries that prevent him from working. He alleges during the arrest officers forced him to his knees, twisted his hands behind his back and slammed his head and neck into a police vehicle despite not resisting arrest, Canada's newspaper reported. Mr Chebib said he passed out in a jail cell and while being transported to a hospital in shackles a police officer covered his mouth, making it difficult to breathe. He is seeking $1 million in general damages, $1 million for loss of income and punitive damages of $350,000 from the three officers, Canada's attorneygeneral and the Police Services Board. Mr Chebib joined his brothers and sisters in Melbourne in 1999, arriving from Calgary with his wife and his four children. He sought permanent residency in Australia but was rejected because he failed to meet the income requirements of his business visa.

Victims of the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria's north-east will share in $32.5 million after a Supreme Court Justice agreed to an out-of-court settlement. The 2009 bushfires at Beechworth and Mudgegonga claimed two lives and destroyed 38 houses. The class action group of around 80 people included all those who suffered property damage in the fire. A trial was originally set down for eight weeks in March but an out of court settlement between victims and defendants - who included the Department of Sustainability and Environment and SPI Electricity - was approved by the Victorian Supreme Court. Justice Karin Emerton found the settlement of $32.85 million was fair and reasonable.
It is alleged the fire started when a tree fell across a powerline, but Justice Emerton told the court a cause of the fire was not agreed on. The settlement will amount to around 43 per cent of the total damage bill. The lead plaintiffs, Paul Mercieca and Amelia Coombes, claimed damages for their personal injuries and for property damage to their rented residential and farm property. The class action group sued SPI Electricity Pty Ltd, Eagle Travel Tower Services Pty Ltd, the Department of Sustainability and Environment and Parks Victoria. The matter was due to be settled in an eight week trial that was to have begun in March, but the parties agreed to a settlement on the first day of the hearing, leaving only the final figure to be determined.
A Florida mother who fatally shot her four children before killing herself on Tuesday called three of the kids who had sought help from a neighbour back to the house before firing the fatal shots, authorities said. Three of Tonya Thomas' children had gone to a neighbors front door before dawn to say their mother had shot them, said Lt Tod Goodyear, a spokesman for the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. She then called the children back to the house and killed them, Goodyear said.
The children ranged in age from 12 to 17. "It appeared they had been shot," Goodyear said. "The mother of the children came out of the residence next door, called for the children to return home, at which time they left and went back to the house." The neighbour then heard gunshots and called police. The shooting happened in an area known as the "Space Coast" because it is the home of NASA's Kennedy Space Center, the location of numerous shuttle launches.

Hot, Dry Summer Predicted For Conservatives To Eliminate Sin Most Of Canada Card In Latest Cost-Cutting Move
Along coastal BC, temperatures should be near-normal for the summer If you like it hot, you will certainly like one of the first summer forecasts of the season for Canada; most of the country could see a very hot, very dry summer. "It looks like at least two-thirds of Canada will probably be dealing with a very warm-to-hot summer compared to normal," says AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson. In fact, the US-based forecaster is predicting one of the hottest and driest summers in 20 years for Canada, except in BC and Quebec. "Looking at southern Alberta, and southern Saskatchewan through much of Manitoba, temperatures should be wellabove normal throughout the course of the summer and it also looks like a slightly drier summer compared to normal across these areas," predicts Anderson. "This particular region, though, has been experiencing very warm and dry summers... about 80 per cent of the time over the last dozen or so years, so it's nothing new," he notes. Accuweather predicts coastal BC temperatures will be near-normal for the summer, with the western edge of the heat stretching only as far as the interior of the province. "In my opinion, much of BC will have a very pleasant summer, but there is going to be a difference between the coast and... into the mountains," explains Anderson. "Along the coast, we do expect to see a continuation of below-normal ocean water temperatures through the summer and that should have a slight cooling effect right along the immediate coast, probably leading to a little more fog than usual," he adds. Environment Canada's preliminary outlook calls for a warmer than normal summer for much of Canada, including the Lower Mainland. The federal governments months-long cost-cutting spree killing unnecessary wallet stuffers has claimed the life of yet a third victim: the SIN card. Canadians will no longer receive the redand-white plastic cards, which display a nine-digit social insurance number, but lack high-tech security features found in other identification, such as drivers licenses and credit cards. Plans were unveiled Tuesday at the Senate finance committee as parliamentarians continue to discuss Bill C-38, the Tories omnibus budget legislation. The cut will save taxpayers roughly $1.5 million a year, the committee heard. Beginning in March 2014, (SINs) will simply be issued in a letter, rather than as a separate plastic card, Alyson Queen, communications director for Human Resources Minister Diane Finley, said in a statement. The news follows recent belt-tightening announcements by the Conservatives to ice the penny and cancel government cheques in favour of direct deposits. Those cuts are expected to save taxpayers nearly $30 million annually. Peter Boyd, a Service Canada director general and departmental security officer, told the committee the SIN card is essentially useless and, without any built-in security, can, if stolen, lead to privacy breaches, chiefly identity theft. (The card) is not required for delivering services, he said. Relying on it as a mechanism for identifying clients is not prudent. On Tuesday, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada applauded the move, suggesting that cards are easily lost. Social insurance numbers and their cards, which were created in 1964 for enrolment in the Canada Pension Plan and employment insurance programs, can be used to apply for credit cards or bank accounts. If fewer people wind up carrying a SIN card with them as a result of the change, that will be a positive development for privacy, said Valerie Lawton, a senior communications adviser at the privacy office. But the eradication raises concerns that people who need to use their SINs, but forget the number, will be left scratching their heads without a card. I think what its going to cause is a lot of inconvenience for people, said Catherine Callbeck, a Liberal senator from Prince Edward Island who sits on the finance committee. Many Canadians have been used to going into their purse and getting their cards with their number and now theyre not going to have it. The committee was told that forgotten numbers could be re-requested by mail or at a Service Canada centre. A 2007 public opinion survey conducted for the Office of the Privacy Commissioner found 35 per cent of respondents had not memorized their SINs. Forty-six per cent reported the SIN card was kept in a wallet a 16-point decrease from 2005 while nine per cent said the card was lost. Service Canada stressed the government will still issue SINs.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is expanding the list of suitable jobs for those receiving Employment Insurance, and insulting everyone in the process. Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty wants to tinker with Employment Insurance and has started the process by insulting everyone receiving the benefits. "There is no bad job," Flaherty told reporters before heading off to cash his paycheque and tally his pension benefits. Flaherty says the federal government will expand the list of suitable jobs for those receiving EI. In effect, the government is implying that anyone being helped by EI cheques is a slacker. And if we could just put a few engineers or cabinetmakers to work in the farm fields, paradise awaits. In addition to mismatching EI recipients with jobs, the Conservative government plans to pass a law that allows companies to pay temporary foreign workers up to 15 per cent less than local employees. It's not clear if the imported workers will carry government ministers around Ottawa in sedan chairs, but if they do, it's nice to know the fares will be a relative bargain. You may not have the same economic schooling as Flaherty, but maybe you're right to question why during an economic downturn we'd want to make it cheaper to import help. It would all make sense if you owned a multinational company making big bucks. Prime Minister Stephen Harper may believe he has a competent finance minister but Harper should find an actual human being with a heart to announce financial policy. Flaherty could make a dead man seem warm and cuddly. Change is not always a bad thing but even if you have a brilliant idea, it's awfully easy to screw up how change is implemented. If you have an idea for improvement, then start talking. Cavemen figured this out after they progressed past the grunting stage. Our government has the capacity to discuss and consult with experts, and even average Joe Canadian when it comes to employment. Why not consult with the business community and, yes, even the opposition parties? The Tories have shown continued refusal to discuss, refine and compromise. They prefer government by decree: here's the policy, final sale. It's becoming the Conservative government's Achilles heel. No one is right first time, every time. Decreeing change without discussing it makes it difficult to accept compromise when you realize someone can make the proposed policy better. Harper never wants to lose face by admitting his government's original idea isn't perfect, so we're all stuck with it. Flaherty's attack on EI recipients is an attempt to drive a wedge between the haves and the have-nots. Step one: thoroughly demonize the unemployed. Step two: blame them for being left further and further behind. We should all want the gap between rich and poor to close, not yawn. Should well-educated and skilled workers be forced to take the most basic jobs when unemployed? If companies can pay temporary foreign workers less than Canadians, how will that affect our unemployment rate?

Whether you are seeking a full time permanent position or a temporary job, the resume is still how potential employers make their decisions as to whether or not to hire you. A well written resume gives the employer a good idea of how you might fit the position being offered. Resume Tips A resume is often the one thing that can stand between you and that job you want so badly. It can showcase the skills you have if it is written well, or it can make you look as if you dont care and just threw it together for the sake of the job interview. A well put together resume for a temporary job is just as important as one for a position with a prestigious company. If you take the time to list your qualifications and skills, and really spend time thinking about what you want your resume to say about you, it shows. The Cover Letter A good resume should always have a cover letter attached. You should
introduce yourself and explain why you are applying to the company for the temporary position, and include a little information as to why you think you would be the best candidate for the job. The cover letter doesnt have to be very long, but well written and to the point. Even companies that hire temporary employees cant help but be impressed that you took the time to prepare a cover letter addressed directly to them. Dont go overboard or appear too eager - keep it simple and basic. What a Good Resume Should Say The resume itself should contain a short history about you, your education, qualifications, and past work history. Stick to the facts, and dont try to glorify yourself. If you embellish your accomplishments with facts that arent completely true and you do get the job, the employer will find out eventually that you werent quite truthful and you may lose that job. Even a temporary job resume should always contain
truthful information. Employers dont take kindly to the fact that someone may have lied to get a position. Listing Qualifications Make sure you list all the things that you are qualified to do whether you think they are important or not. There may be something you are good at that will fit the job you are applying for even if you dont consider it pertinent. You dont have to go overboard, but a short list of qualifications and accomplishments is perfectly fine on the temporary job resume. Companies are looking for the same things in a temporary employee as they are in a permanent worker. The only difference is that a temporary job resume might be general while one for a permanent role should be specific. Education and Work History Your education and any degrees you have earned should also be listed on the temporary job resume. The past work history, the job description and your duties and responsibilities will give the potential employer more insight
into your capabilities and may lead to an offer of employment even if it is temporary. Many temporary positions have resulted in a permanent full time job, which could all be accounted for the time it took to create professional resume.

Cherries are not only delicious, they're also good for you. Here are some reasons to include them in your diet. Anti-Inflammatory Cherries have gained fame as one of nature's most powerful antiinflammatories, which means they're beneficial for many different conditions. This is due to the anthocyanins in cherries that researchers have found prevent free radical damage and inhibit cyclooxygenase enzymes better than many anti-inflammatory drugs. Arthritis Benefits According to the Arthritis Foundation, drinking tart cherry juice mixed with water three times a day may be beneficial for people with arthritis. This is due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Heart Health A study at the University of Michigan found that a diet that includes a lot

Memory Booster Anthocyanin is also good for the brain and has been shown to improve memory. As archaic as timesheets sound, tracking your time at work can help you assess where those missing hours in your workday went. Wondering where the day went when the clock strikes 5 p.m.? Time-tracking tools could keep those hours from slipping away and help you manage them more effectively. Timesheets tracking your time every day to see where it goes. Its a simple concept, really. But lately I find myself frequently recommending them as a tool to many overworked business people. Why? Will timesheets magically find those hours youre missing from your day? No, but theyll do a great job of helping you assess just where time is going, so you can evaluate if youre using your time in the most strategic way possible. As a service-based firm, weve used timesheets from the beginning both to allow us to bill for time spent on
line. When it comes to remembering to use the tools, thats just a matter of forming a habit. One of the best ways to have some accountability is to set yourself a reminder to run through the reports youre getting about where you time is going, on a regular basis. So, whether thats checking in for 15 minutes every Monday to see where your time went last week, or checking in at the end of the week, doing that regular review will help keep you on track with recording your time. If you try timesheet tracking for a set period say, a month or one quarter you can get a better sense of where your time is spent so you can adjust as necessary (or, in some cases, hire staff or contractors to take some unnecessary pieces off your plate). And, at the very least, it will give you quantifiable proof of why youre feeling so exhausted.

Children are good judges of character, so don't forget to quiz little Susie and Johnny when the babysitter has left, advises Martha , a mother of two. What TV shows did they watch (always a good indication of how much TV they watched), what games did they play, what books did they read? Did the sitter raise her voice? Did they like and trust her? Did anything happen that made them feel uncomfortable or afraid?
the responsibilities that go with it. A sense of security is key when starting out. Marryn took jobs only in her immediate neighbourhood so her mother could help her out if need be. You also want to be sure that your junior sitter doesnt take on more than she can realistically handle. Babysitting a sixmonth-old is different from babysitting a six-year-old. Your teen may feel a lot more comfortable playing Candy Land than changing dirty diapers.
Show respect
Once youve found your own Mary Poppins, you'll want to keep her at all costs. That may mean digging a little deeper in your pocket at the end of the night. People think nothing of paying their cleaning ladies and dog sitters more than their babysitter. Tardiness is another major babysitting gripe. Try to make it home when you say youre going to (especially on a school night). If you are late, pay generously for the extra time. ''I babysat for one parent who ended up staying out until five in the morning,'' says Michelle. ''He finally called at 3:30 and told me to go to bed!'' Make it a point to let your sitter know how much you and your children appreciate her. ''I love getting little presents and cards from the kids on birthdays and special occasions,'' says Michelle. Its a good idea to offer the occasional incentive, too, says Douglas. ''It could be a $100 Blockbuster gift certificate to pick up movies to watch when the kids are in bed. You want your sitter to feel valued because there are times when your kids arent going to make her feel that way.''
Your teen has her eye on an Xbox 360 and making the cash to get it. But before your child is ready to babysit someone else's child, you want to be sure she has the necessary skills. Here's how to help make it a safe and rewarding experience for everyone.
Be prepared
While there's no legal age for babysitting, 12 is a good jumping-off point, although some kids are clearly not ready until theyre in their teens. It depends on their maturity and the number and ages of the children they'll be babysitting. Experts recommend taking one of the many babysitting courses available. Not only does it help your kids prepare for their actual role as a babysitter, but it also gets them to really think about what it means and
Impress on your teen the importance of acting professionally. She should always arrive on time and clean up after herself and her young charges. ''I've told my daughter to put the dishes away if shes making the kids lunch or a snack, and to make sure their toys are tidied up when the parents get home,'' says, a mother of two. I didn't appreciate it when my kids were younger and I'd come home and the house was topsyturvy.' Remind her to get specific information from the parents about the children's routines (bedtime, food, activities, toileting) and the house rules for computer and TV use, visitors and telephone calls. Part of becoming a professional and safe babysitter is being mature enough to recognize your limitations and to be true to your instincts. Just because someone offers you the job doesn't mean you have to take it.'' When Connies 16-year-old daughter, Nicole, was asked to babysit until three oclock in the morning, she decided to turn the job down. Neither she nor her mother was comfortable with her being out that late. The parent understood, and I thought it was very respectful of her to call and forewarn. Teens tend to be pleasers, although not always with their own parents. They can easily be taken advantage of. While the majority of parents who hire your child to babysit will be fair, there are always exceptions. We get a lot of complaints about house cleaning. A sitter shouldnt be asked to mop floors or clean the bathroom. And younger teens shouldnt prepare an entire meal or bathe young charges either. Talk to your teen about how to handle uncomfortable situations, and empower her with the right to say no. Marryn once accepted a drive home from a parent who she knew had been drinking. I was a little bit scared, but I didnt want to say anything,'' she says.

Food with a lot of fat and few carbohydrates could have a better effect on blood sugar levels and blood lipids for people with Type 2 diabetes, a new study has revealed. The finding from the Linkoping University comes as a surprise as diabetic patients are usually advised to keep a low-fat diet. The two-year dietary study led by Hans Guldbrand, general practitioner, and Fredrik Nystrom, professor of Internal Medicine included 61 patients of Type 2, or adult-onset diabetes. They were randomized into two groups, where they followed either a low-carbohydrate (high fat) diet or a low-fat diet. In both groups, the participants lost approximately 4 kg on average. In addition, a clear improvement in the glycaemic control was seen in the lowcarbohydrate group after six months. Their average blood sugar level dropped from 58.5 to 53.7 mmol/mol (the unit for average blood glucose). This means that the intensity of the treatment for diabetes could also be reduced, and the amounts of insulin were lowered by 30percent. Despite the increased fat intake with a larger portion of saturated fatty acids, their lipoproteins did not get worse. Quite the contrary - the HDL, or 'good' cholesterol, content increased on the high fat diet. No statistically certain improvements, either of the glycaemic controls or the lipoproteins, were seen in the low-fat group, despite the weight loss. "You could ask yourself if it really is good to recommend a low-fat diet to patients with diabetes, if despite their weight loss they get neither better lipoproteins nor blood glucose levels," Nystrom said. In the low-carbohydrate diet, 50 percent of the energy came from fat, 20 percent from carbohydrates, and 30 percent from protein. For the low-fat group the distribution was 30 percent from fat, 55-60 percent from carbohydrates, and 10-15 percent from protein, which corresponds to the diet recommended by the Swedish National Food Agency. The participants were recruited from two primary health care centres and met for four group meetings during the first year of the study. All 61 participants remained in the study for the follow-up. "In contrast to most other studies of this type, we lost no patients at all, which vouches for the good quality of our data," Guldbrand added.

DISCO singer Donna Summer has died at the age of 63 after a long battle with cancer. The five-time Grammy Award-winner was in Florida at the time of her death. The singer came to fame in the 1970s and was known for her hits She Works for Hard for the Money and This Time I Know It's for Real. She is survived by her husband, singer and producer Bruce Sudano, their daughters, Brooklyn and Amanda and Summer's daughter, Mimi, from a previous marriage. Sources said that the singer was trying to complete an album at the time of her death. Summer's other iconic hits include Last Dance, Hot Stuff and Bad Girls. "Early this morning, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith," her family said in a statement. "While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy. Words truly can't express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time." Often called the Queen of Disco, Summer was born LaDonna Adrian Gaines on December 31, 1948, in Boston. She began singing early in the church choir and by her teens had formed several musical groups. Her first album, Lady of the Night, arrived in 1974 in Europe, and 1975's Love to Love You Baby brought her worldwide fame. In the 1978 disco film Thank God it's Friday, her song Last Dance won Summer her first Grammy. Summer's soaring vocals on She Works Hard for the Money brought her a Best Pop Vocal Performance Award in 1984. In the mid-1980s, Summer encountered controversy when she was accused of making anti-gay comments related to AIDS. She claimed she had been misquoted but not before thousands of her records were returned and dance clubs boycotted her music. Summer holds the record for most consecutive double albums to hit number one on the Billboard charts (three) and was the first female to have four number one singles in a 12-month period: three as a solo artist and one as a duo with Barbra Streisand, as reported.
Ontario police say they are holding a man who allegedly swallowed a $20,000 diamond as long as it takes for him to produce the evidence. It has been nearly a week since Richard Mackenzie Matthews, 52, is alleged to have switched a diamond at Precision Jewellers and swallowed the real one. Matthews has been held at police headquarters while they wait for the 1.7-carat stone to pass through his system. Sergeant Brett Corey said that Matthews has gone to the bathroom numerous times, but the diamond hasn't passed. Corey said a recent X-ray showed a pair of fake diamonds, or cubic zirconiums, stuck in the man's intestines but because a diamond is translucent, it isn't visible. He says the suspect is eager to get the ordeal over with and is co-operating. In the early stages, Corey says Matthews was being given laxative type foods, but is now being fed whatever he wants, in an effort to get things moving. Matthews is charged with theft and breach of court conditions, and is also wanted on warrants in Toronto.

Danger and intrigue lie at the heart of Headhunters, a superior film from Norway. I Was Nervous About 'The Best Exotic...' Weighty Cast: Dev Patel
Actor Dev Patel, who is gearing up for the release of his forthcoming Indiabased film "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel", says initially he was nervous with the experienced heavy-weights in the film-cast. The movie, which is coming out Friday, features Dame Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Tom Wilkinson along with Indian actors Lillette Dubey and Tena Desae. "It was phenomenal - and that's an understatement. It was amazing for me just to watch them. I was nervous with this weighty cast, of course, but John gave me the confidence to be free. Even the smallest scenes were great lessons for me," said Dev in a statement. Dev, known for his character in Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire", has a personal connect with the film "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel". "My mother has actually worked as a caretaker for the elderly and I was enticed by how vivid these characters are, by their sarcasm and their wisdom. I fell in love with the script because every character shines in his or her own different way and you believe in each of them," he added. Directed by John Madden, the movie revolves around a hotel in Rajasthan, advertised as India's answer for Britain's retired people.

History
Madras was founded in 1639 when the British East India Company (represented by Francis Day and Andrew Cogan and aided by a local translator Beri Thimappa) was granted land to build a trading settlement by the local ruler (Nayak) of the suburb of Vandavasi, Damerla Venkatapathy Nayak. The document of the land grant is dated August 22, 1639, and hence Madras celebrates its birthday on August 22 each year as Madras day.
Culture
Madras was one of the first outposts of British East India Company. Colonel William Lambton, superintendent of the
Chennai is gateway to the South, and its culture is distinctly different from that of any other city in India. Tamil tradition and culture is essentially the celebration of the beauty, which is exemplified through dance, clothing, and sculptures. Chennai is both an orthodox and a modern cosmopolitan city; the culture of the city reflects its diverse population. The traditional arts, music, dance and all other art forms of Tamilnadu grow and flourish here. The food is a unique blend of
traditional, to fast foods and filter kaapi. Its a land of temples and priests. The architecture ranges from ancient temples to modern high-rises. Music is classical and western, to the growing nightlife in the city. You can find a school for traditional Bharatanatyam or Salsa dance and for music a veena / violin or for Guitar/drums school in almost every neighborhood of the city. Chennai checks reflects its traditionalism every December when the music season is in full swing. Clothes are generally conservative but young people are contemporary. Traditional Tamil Clothing - Tamil women traditionally wear the Sari while the men wear Dhoti, which could be either a white pancha or a colourful lungi with typical South Indian patterns. The sari, being an un-stitched wrap, enhances the shape of the wearer while only partially covering the midriff. In Indian philosophy, the navel of the Supreme Being is considered as the
The Problem:
year-old girl came to live at my place, and I put into practice myself, and have since found out is often used by professional drivers who frequently go into people's driveways. A friend of mine who worked for many years as a linesman for an electric company said it was his company's policy, and all their employees were required to do it. It is this: Rather than drive forward into your parking spot in your driveway (or someone elses), making it necessary for you to back out and turn when you leave, turn and back up on your way in to the driveway, so you can drive straight out when you leave, with a clear view of what's ahead of you.
leave, even if you remember to walk around the car to make sure it's clear before getting in to it, there is still a delay of about a minute or more while you get in the car, fasten your seat belt, start the engine, etc. During this minute or so you don't know what's happening close in behind your car, where there's a large blind spot you can't see, even if you look in your mirrors, and this is long enough for a pet, a toddler or a young child to wander in behind your car. And this is exactly how children can get injured and killed by being backed over. Even if you know that you would never back out if you knew there were pet or a child anywhere in the front yard, it's still safer to back in first, for a number of reasons. One time it may be your partner, your older son or daughter who has just learned to drive, or a friend, who drives your car out, not you, so if you set the car up for a safe exit by backing it in yourself, you take responsibility for your children's safety, and avoid potential problems. And even if it is you who drives out, it is possible that one day you may be tired, frazzled, in a rush, and not notice your child is in the front yard because he is behind a tree or some other object - it's much better for you to have set
Apart from being aware of the issue, and being more careful as a result, there are two practical things you can do. One is to have a backing camera installed in your car. The other is something I thought of after a four-
The reason why it's much safer to turn and back up on the way in to a driveway is that you can survey the driveway in front of you and check for the presence of children or pets before turning and backing, then, having determined there are no kids or pets around, straight away do the turn and back up into your parking spot. Because there is no delay before backing up, there is very little or no opportunity for a child or a pet to get in behind the car and get backed over. On the other hand, if you come in forward and have to back up when you
up a safe forward exit in advance by backing in. It gives you more choice about when to do the potentially hazardous backing up. If you are feeling good and alert, and there are no kids or pets in the front yard when you arrive home (perhaps your kids are even in your car), you know you can safely turn and back into your parking spot. But you have a choice: if your kids are running around the yard, or you are very tired and think you might back into a tree if you even try it, you can choose to just drive slowly forward into your parking spot. You can then turn your car around at your leisure, when you know it's safe to do so, or make sure you leave sufficient time and are not in a rush, and that the kids are all safely indoors, when you do leave, if you know you'll have to back up. On the other hand, if you come in forward all the time you don't give yourself a choice: you have to back out every time, regardless of your state of mind, how much of a rush you're in, what the visibility is like, etc. One minor extra advantage of backing in is that your trunk is then a little closer to the house for unloading your shopping from the car.

Suzuki's compact five-seat SUV, the Grand Vitara, carries forward unchanged for the 2012 model year, as it did for 2011. Borrowing some of its mechanical workings from the last generation of the Chevrolet Equinox, the Grand Vitara is carlike in its basic proportions, but available with four-wheel drive and offering meaningful off-road capability with its low-range gearbox and frame-based construction. That makes it somewhat unique, competing with a small range of crossovers like the Equinox, Ford Escape, Subaru Outback, and Honda CR-V. Though its design is clean and simple, it's perhaps so simple as to be forgettable. Nevertheless, it strikes a handsome balance between the softness of a car-like crossover and tougher off-road-bred SUVs. Inside, the Grand Vitara is, like the Kizashi sedan, much nicer than most of the competition, featuring quality plastics and soft-touch paint. Two engines were previously available, but for 2012, the Grand Vitara shrinks to just a single offering: a 2.4-liter fourcylinder. Rated at 166 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, the engine scores between 19/23 mpg and 19/26 mpg city/highway depending on trim level and drivetrain. The Grand Vitara is available in either rear-wheel drive
Times Driving
or all-wheel drive. A five-speed manual transmission is available in the basespec model, with the rest of the line sticking with a four-speed automatic. In the Limited model, an upgraded 4-mode 4WD system is available, further improving off-road ability with high and low transfer gear ratios. As you might expect, the fourcylinder's acceleration is less than potent in this size of vehicle. Handling is fair, meaning you won't find much to complain about in ride quality (though choppy pavement can be troublesome), but you won't be attacking a canyon road in the Grand Vitara either. The Grand Vitara's cabin is long, providing good leg room at all positions, but narrow, meaning shoulder room in the back seat is scarce and cargo room is disappointing. The side-opening tail gate doesn't help the cargo-area's utility, either, putting the Grand Vitara toward the back of the class in this regard. Safety gear is a hit-and-miss affair: all the expected standard equipment, including front side and side-curtain airbags, stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes, but despite that, the Grand Vitara doesn't rank at the top of any safety tests. Still, the IIHS rates the 2012 Grand Vitara its highest overall value of "good," and the NHTSA scores it at four stars of rollover resistance.
In terms of features and options, the Vitara packs in a lot of value for its sub-$20,000 starting price. In fact, the base model comes with navigation, automatic climate control, keyless start and entry, power doors and locks, and an XM-compatible audio system for
its starting price of $19,499. Upgrades available include real-time safety camera, weather, Google search, and more; a premium seven-speaker audio system; Bluetooth hands-free calling, and up to 18-inch alloy wheels in higher trims.

Being a head coach in any sport typically doesn't end well. When you consider that a typical year ends when you lose your last game, a coach better have a thick skin. A head coach will typically take most of the blame for a loss and get no credit for the win. After all, it's a heck of a lot easier to replace one guy at the top than a bunch of high-priced underachievers who sell jerseys with guaranteed contracts. Some coaches get a reputation as postseason chokers. Fair or unfair, the success or failure of a team in the playoffs can make or break a coach's legacy. A quick glance at the most successful regular-season coaches won't necessarily show the best postseason coaches. When it comes to the second season, some guys have what it takes to inspire, motivate, drive and even will their team to win. Then there are these guys. Not to say that they will never win, but these coaches aren't getting any younger. In a league that has seen more parity now than ever before in its history, the Stanley Cup is regarded as the most difficult trophy to win in team sports. Don't believe me? Ask any of these guys how tough it is.
Billy Reay
Tied with Barry Trotz as the longesttenured coach in the NHL today, Ruff was a Stanley Cup finalist in 1998-99. He is the all-time Sabres leader in wins and playoff wins. Though the Sabres fell short in their playoff push this year, Ruff will have them back contending next year.
Ron Wilson
Terry Murray
Jacques Martin
Jacques Martin started the forgettable 2011-12 season as the head coach in Montreal. He finished the season, well, probably happy he isn't the coach in Montreal. Resting comfortably unemployed at No. 10 on the all-time wins list, Martin is a veteran of two conference finals. He could never get to the Stanley Cup Final, but Martin is known best for bringing the Ottawa franchise to respectability. The knock against Martin has always been underperforming in the playoffs. His track record of success in the regular season and his ability to turn franchises in the right direction mean that he probably won't be unemployed for long.
Bryan Murray
The younger of the "Flying Murray Brothers," Terry was relieved of his coaching duties in Los Angeles after his Kings squad stumbled out of the gate last fall. As the talented Kings take the ice in the Western Conference Paul Maurice finals, Murray probably has some mixed emotions. His most recent stop on the coaching carousel was preceded by visits to Washington, Philadelphia and Florida. Originally helped out by his brother to get into the coaching ranks in Washington, Terry certainly was able to make a slightly better name for himself in the postseason. With a record closer to .500, Terry Murray's teams fell short of expectations. His only appearance in the finals was with the "Legion of Doom" in Philadelphia in 1997. Barry Trotz The crappiest bit of irony for (former) Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice was that, during his two-year absence from the Carolina bench, the Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup (2006). While it could be argued that Maurice's influence helped get them over the hump to Stanley Cup glory, I don't think he got fitted for a ring. Carolina's slow start this season led to Maurice being let go as coach. The good news for 'Canes fans is that this As the only coach in franchise history, means that they will again win the the legend of Barry Trotz looked to Stanley Cup in 2014, and Maurice will grow exponentially as his Predators return to coach the team in 2016. capped a spectacular regular season Lindy Ruff with a five-game destruction of the hated Red Wings. The wheels fell off the wagon in Music City in all-toofamiliar fashion as Trotz's Predators were wiped out by Phoenix in Round 2. The most impressive part of the Trotz tenure is how quickly he made Nashville competitive and relevant in a non-traditional hockey market.
Billy Reay at least got to lift the Cup as a player in 1946 and 1953. He got to the finals as a coach three different times and lost all three. Reay is in the top 15 in almost all coaching win categories but could never get his teams to Stanley Cup glory. Despite having loaded teams in the early 1970s with Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull, the Blackhawks couldn't match their regular-season success in the playoffs.
Ron Wilson was the latest and greatest scapegoat to fall short of unrealistic expectations in Toronto. Wilson's record in Toronto wasn't awful, but without a playoff appearance, Wilson had to know his days were numbered. Successful with every team he's coached, except of course Toronto, Wilson lost in his only Stanley Cup Final appearance, getting swept by the Red Wings as the coach of the Washington Capitals.
Pat Quinn
Pat Quinn has the distinction of being the winningest coach to never lift the Stanley Cup. A cup finalist with the Flyers in 1980 and the Canucks in 1994, "The Big Irishman" also holds the unofficial crown as the last coach to get Toronto to the playoffs. Quinn's 684 career wins rank him fourth on the all-time list, and his 94 playoff wins have him sitting fifth in league history. At age 69, chances are, the Leafs won't be buzzing Quinn unless they have a better shot at getting to the playoffs, much less lifting the Cup.

As this season has evidenced, a great regular season doesn't guarantee postseason success, not even in the short term. The Presidents' Trophywinning Vancouver Canucks were given an early opening-round exit by the Los Angeles Kings. Throughout the history of hockey, there have been numerous talented and dominating teams that, for whatever reason, couldn't get it done in the playoffs. Here, we'll be examining the best teams to never reach the Holy Grail and win a Stanley Cup.
The Washington Capitals are yet another Presidents' Trophy winner to disappoint in the playoffs. They were bounced by a Montreal Canadiens team who had a hot goalie at just the right time. Jaroslav Halak stole the show in this series and the next against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Washington Capitals have been making a habit out of failing to live up to expectations once the postseason comes around.
During the 1980s, two franchises reigned supreme: the Edmonton Oilers and the New York Islanders. However, 1982 was not the Oilers year. In spite of having a loaded cast of characters led by "The Great One" himself, Wayne Gretzky, the Oilers failed to succeed in the playoffs. They squared off against the Los Angeles Kings in what was one of the most exciting series in NHL history. This matchup will forever be remembered for the Miracle on Manchester, in which the Kings stormed back from a 5-0 deficit to beat the Oilers.
The Boston Bruins franchise was at its peak during this time. They were led by the great Bobby Orr, and just finished the regular season with a league-best 57 wins. Going into the postseason, they looked to capture back-to-back cups as they won it the year before. However, they would be knocked out in the first round by the Montreal Canadiens, who went on to win the Stanley Cup. The Bruins would recapture their glory by winning the Stanley Cup in 1972.
The Montreal Canadiens finished the regular season with a 38-8-4 record and were heavily favored to hoist the Stanley Cup. However, the Habs were knocked off in the semifinals by a Toronto Maple Leafs team that barely finished above .500.
The San Jose Sharks have long been a disappointment when it comes to the playoffs. The 2008-09 San Jose Sharks looked like they finally meant business. They set franchise records with 53 wins and 117 points. But once the playoffs came around, it was the same story. They wouldn't even make it past the first round as the Anaheim Ducks knocked them out in six games. Now, it appears Joe Thornton may never win a Stanley Cup.
The 1966-67 Chicago Blackhawks built on an impressive previous season by amassing a then-franchise-record 41 wins. The Hawks were the top seed in the playoffs and were led by the likes of Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and Kenny Wharram. However, they'd lose to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the opening-round series, 4-2.
After a surprise season the year before, the Buffalo Sabres were expected to be one of the best teams the following season, and they did not disappoint. They had a great mixture of size, skill, youth and experience. They ended up winning the Presidents' Trophy and stormed through the first two rounds. Then, in the Eastern Conference finals, they were dismantled by the Ottawa Senators in five games.
Although this Detroit Red Wings team was a No. 2 seed, it was very stunning to see how they went out. They would be swept by the Anaheim Ducks, who would eventually advance to the Stanley Cup Final and lose to the New Jersey Devils. This early-round exit occurred at the height of the Wings dynasty.
The Pittsburgh Penguins were well on their way to becoming an early '90s dynasty with the likes of Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr. The franchise had already won backto-back Stanley Cups and was looking to take home a third. However, they ran into a feisty New York Islanders team. The Islanders ended up knocking off the heavily favored Pens in a sevengame series.
The Toronto Maple Leafs had a very successful regular season and cruised to the Stanley Cup Final. They were led by Syl Apps, who is one of the best little-known NHLers of all time. In the finals, they squared off against the Chicago Blackhawks, who not only staggered into the postseason with a sub-.500 record, but limped into the finals with injuries. In spite of it all, the Hawks knocked off the Leafs to win the Stanley Cup.
This Detroit Red Wings amassed 124 points in the regular season, clearly positioning themselves as the best in the league. However once the playoffs came around, it was a completely different story. The Edmonton Oilers would knock out the Detroit Red Wings in six games, thanks to outstanding play from goaltender Dwayne Roloson.
Another powerhouse of the late '90s and early 2000s were the Colorado Avalanche. They had a stacked lineup that included Peter Forsberg, Joe Sakic, Milan Hejduk and Patrick Roy. Even with all their firepower, the Avs ended up getting knocked off in the first round by a very conservative and disciplined Minnesota Wild team. After going up 3-1 in the series, Colorado dropped three straight and were eliminated from the postseason.
This Detroit Red Wings team had one of the most impressive regular seasons in NHL history. They managed to win 62 games (then a record) and accumulated 131 points (one shy of the all-time record set by the 76-77 Montreal Canadiens). The roster was loaded with firepower: Brendan Shanahan, Steve Yzerman, Sergei Fedorov - just to name a few. Once the playoffs rolled around, the Wings' magic ride would be halted. They ran into their hated rival, the Colorado Avalanche, in the Western Conference finals and ended up losing in six games.
The St. Louis Blues won the Presidents' Trophy with the help of the likes of Pavol Demitra and Pierre Turgeon. Going into the postseason, many hockey analysts picked the Blues to make a deep run, but the San Jose
During the 1985-86 season, the Edmonton Oilers were in the midst of their great dynasty. They were coming off of back-to-back Stanley Cup championships and were the best team during the regular season. It appeared that they were on their way to a third Stanley Cup, being led by Mark Messier, Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri. However, they would falter in the playoffs and the Montreal Canadiens would take home the top prize. The Oilers would rebound by winning the
After a record breking season and winning the Presidents cup for the first time, the Vancouver Canucks was the favorite to win the Lord Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history. With the Sedin twins along with star players like Kessler, Luongo,, Eherhoff, etc fans could already see Vancouver Canuck's' name engraved on Stanley cup. Thousands of fans jamming doewntown Vancouver to only see the Canucks blanked on the 7th and deciding game.

Toronto FC's Ryan Johnson, top, lands on Vancouver Whitecaps' Camilo Sanvezzo, of Brazil, during the first half of a Canadian Championship soccer game in Vancouver, B.C., on Wednesday May 16, 2012. The second leg of the two-game championship will be played May 23 with the winning club representing Canada in the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League. Second-half substitute Eric Hasslis highlight-reel goal in added time gave the Vancouver Whitecaps a 1-1 draw with Toronto FC in the first leg of the Amway Canadian Championship soccer final Wednesday night. Hassli volleyed in a long cross from Alain Rochat just as four minutes of added time were announced. It was his fourth goal in five games since he ended a 17-game scoreless drought that dated to last season. Ryan Johnson scored for the Reds in the 66th minute. The winner of the two-game, totalgoals series will represent Canada in North American, Central American and Caribbean zone Champions League play. The CONCACAF champion will qualify for the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup. The second leg goes next Wednesday in Toronto. The Reds are seeking their fourth straight Canadian title, while the Whitecaps are seeking to avenge a loss to TFC in last years final. Until Hasslis goal, it looked like struggling Toronto was going to pull off an upset. The Reds have just one victory in all competitions this season, 2-0 over

Now on a three-fight win streak, The Korean Zombie has his sights set on taking out Jose Aldo, the current 145 lbs champ. This is not only his third win in a row, but his third impressive win. The first was the UFCs first ever Twister submission, and the second was the second-fastest knockout in the UFCs history. To top it off, he now has added a Darce choke following an incredible battle with Poirier. Jose Aldo will be facing Erik Koch at UFC 149, so in order for this matchup to happen, Aldo must retain his title against Koch, who is riding a fourfight win streak. Since it is hard to bet

Larry Bird Adds To Legend, Is Named NBA Executive Of The Year
Indiana Pacers president Larry Bird was voted the NBAs Executive of the Year on Wednesday, becoming the first person to win that award, plus the MVP and Coach of the Year honours. The Pacers went 42-24 and are tied 1-1 with Miami in the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Birds moves to strengthen the team during the off-season included promoting Frank Vogel from interim to head coach and signing starting forward David West. He acquired point guard George Hill in a draft-night deal with San Antonio, and traded for Lou Amundson and Leandro Barbosa to fortify the bench for the Pacers, who earned the No. 3 seed in the East and had the fifth-best record in the league. This is an honour for the Indiana Pacers, not an award for Larry Bird, Bird said in a statement. Everyone in this franchise put in a lot of work and showed a lot of patience as we have tried to get this team to a level on and off the court the fans in Indiana can be proud of. You always believe, and hope, the players you get will fit into a plan and Im very proud of what our guys and our coaches have accomplished so far this year. Bird was a three-time MVP as a Boston Celtics player, then guided his homestate Pacers to a 147-67 record in three seasons and their only finals appearance in 2000. He was the Coach of the Year in 1998 following his first season. He returned to the Pacers front office in 2003 and became the full-time president in 2008 after Donnie Walsh left to join the New York Knicks. Bird received 88 points and 12 firstplace votes from a panel of his fellow team executives Wednesday. San Antonios R.C. Buford was second with 56 points and eight first-place votes, while the Los Angeles Clippers Neil Olshey finished third with 55 points (six first-place votes).
