President's Voice
By Marva Warren

Hi FCCA Family, Provider Appreciation Day is a day for others to say they appreciate us as child care providers, but the FCCA wants you to know that we appreciate you ALWAYS. THANK YOU for all you do. Super Women. Celebrate You ! Smoochies from Marva

Meet Mrs. Faye Baril, owner of Play Care in Apex, NC. Faye is not new to operating a family child care home. She had a program from 19962004 and re-opened her family child care at the end of 2011. Currently, her program is rated a 1star, which is what all new programs receive upon opening. She wishes to increase her star rating both with the education she has received and also by going through the

FCCRS as soon as she can. Among Fayes goals for 2012 is to increase enrollment in her program. The best part of running her own program is her ability to be home with her children and she tells anyone who asks all the benefits of working with young children. She says I love my job. Even on tough days there are so many smiles to look forward tothis is what I

was meant to do. We thank you Mrs. Baril for recommitting to working with young children and finding the special reward that comes from helping to shape the lives of our children!
If you would like to be featured in the Provider Profile, or if you want to suggest someone, contact Kairise Atkinson (see FCCA contacts). We want to know more about our members!

15th Annual Day of Learning
Saturday, September 8, 2012 8:00 a.m. 1:30 p.m.

Sunshine

The FCCA extends well wishes to Vanessa Blands mother. The FCCA extends well wishes to Betty Barnwell who had surgery in April.

Join us for the 15th Annual Day of Learning, Appropriate Guidance, presented by the Infant Toddler Education Specialists at Child Care Services Association. The workshop will focus on appropriate guidance and discipline techniques based on the developmental needs of infants and toddlers. Participants will explore how the environment impacts social and emotional competence and the difference between inappropriate and unacceptable behaviors and specific strategies that can be used to respond to challenging behaviors and promote positive ones. This workshop is offering 5 training hours and/or .5 CEUs. The cost of the Day of Learning this year is $35.00 for members. Applications will be available at the May meeting. If you plan to register at this meeting, please do not forget to bring your money. To register, you must turn in a registration form and your money at the same time. The application is also available through email by contacting Linda Clark (lindashousefhcc@aol.com), our web site (see page 7) or, if you do not have email, you can get one by calling Nanette Ausby at 552-9624. The Day of Learning will be held on the main campus of Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, in the child care education building. Remember, there is no smoking allowed anywhere on campus.

If you or a member you know have any news, please call Evelyn Dunn at 829-9917.

Season for Giving 2012 Directories

The 2012 Directory will be available at the May meeting. A PDF will be emailed to all members unless you notify Jane Pope that you want a print directory or that you do not want a pdf. You must notify Jane by phone (919-467-1947) or email (jppope@mindspring.com) before 10 pm May 1st. If you call, please call after 5:00 pm and before 10 pm. This year, the Season for Giving project is a donation to the Nurse-Family Partnership which is a free, voluntary program that partners first-time moms with nurse home visitors. When a new mother enrolls in the program a specially trained nurse will visit her throughout her pregnancy and until her baby turns two years old. During these visits, the caring nurse will offer the knowledge and support a first time mother needs to confidently create a better life for her baby and herself. We will be accepting donations of all kinds of baby items: clothes, toys, diapers, car seats, baby supplies or you can make a monetary donation. Please make sure items are new or gently used and clean. You can bring your donations to any meeting and give them to Evelyn Dunn. This will be ongoing throughout this year, with continuous donations being made as we get a good supply.

Reach for the Stars

Congratulations to Suzette King for receiving 4 stars.
Have you improved your star rating? Have you become newly accredited? Have you received a degree or certificate? If so, its time to toot your own horn! We would love to acknowledge your hard work and congratulate you! Please contact Linda Clark (see FCCA Contacts) to have your name published in The Provider.

Below is a condensed version of an email from Beth Smith, former Vice President of Education with HighReach Learning, Inc. She is working with the past founders of HighReach on a new endeavor. This is a great opportunity to try a new curriculum and let the authors know what might work better! We are currently seeking input from providers all over the country on a prototype of a program SPECIFICALLY for family child care providers. The prototype contains 2 weeks/10 days of experiences and can be accessed via our website (www.geewhizeducation.com). It addresses ALL age groupsinfants through school-age. Weve been working hand-in-hand with leaders in Family Child Care at the national and state level to create the prototype. Nowwe need feedback from you and fellow FCC professionals on our efforts! Please know that at this point, we are NOT trying to sell anything. We are merely doing research to determine if there is a need for a product such as this AND if so, what providers would like the product to look like and contain. The learning activities included in the prototype have been thoughtfully prepared by writers with YEARS of early childhood experience to be simple to implement and provide meaningful experiences designed to be used in a home setting NOT a school. The activities also address all developmental levels for ALL age groups. In the future, we plan to prepare documents to demonstrate how the program conforms to state, QRIS, and accreditation standards. Because we truly care about what FCC professionals want in a program, we would love as many providers as possible to use the prototype and provide us with feedback. In other words, we are reaching out to groups like yours to help us "spread the word!" The only thing we are asking in return is for providers to complete a brief online survey about the prototype once they finish using it. It is our goal to gather as much feedback as possible so we can tailor the product to meet the unique needs of family child care professionals.

Member Ideas, Tips and Recipes

Do you have trouble with mosquitoes? Are you tired of spraying five wiggly children or babies with bug spray? If so, The Mosquito Authority can help! The mosquitoes were really bad at my house and when I discovered TMA last year, I tried it. I was amazed at the results. After the first treatment, the mosquitoes were almost non-existent and after the second one, they were completely gone from the property surrounding my house. The chemicals they use are non-toxic to children and pets when dry (about 30 minutes after treatment) and last 21 days. If you want to know more visit www.bugsbite.com/lpcnc. If you decide to sign up for treatments through this URL, Ill get credit for it. Thanks!
