Slavery in the twelfth chapter and not only of Uncle Toms Cabin by Mattia Cottone.

INTRODUCTION Acculturated people know on what problem this masterpiece focuses its attention: American black slavery, in the nineteenth century. They are also aware of the tone by which the action takes place, that is a sentimental one. In order to have a minute and clear account on American peoples thinking about both slavery and on this latters bitterness and cruelty, we have to carefully test the abovementioned chapter, and, surely, you will exactly understand of what a country which is son of a Declaration stating All men are created equal can do, lacerating a whole race, which has our same way of thinking, feeling, and so forth.

FAMILIES SPLIT OFF This is the deepest wound caused by slavery. It is sufficient to read the saddest episodes both of Albert, a boy of fourteen, separated by his old mother, Aunt Hagar, during an auction to sell slaves left by a dead woman, and the suicide of Lucy, who heavily suffers the theft-sale of his ten-monthsold child, occurred because of the joined action of the very bad slave-trader Haley and the drover John. It is awfully astounding how a Christian people, having always religion on his lips, could let these things to be happened. He thinks African American people to be different, such as pets, and even worse. We remember to the reader they are sons of the Enlightenment; we undoubtedly think their reason is, sometimes, utterly out of order, or even smashed out, because treating men, women, children, in the manner of beasts, is completely opposed to the Bible they always buy, read, talk about and, above all, love.

WHAT AMERICAN THINK ABOUT SLAVERY In the middle of the chapter, we have an almost three-paged debate, taking place on the deck of La Belle Rivire boat. It is a definite summary of the American thinking about this hoary matter: there is who loathes slavery, who appreciates it, who appeals to the Holy Scriptures to be right or to disavow someones thought, but we stress that it is never affirmed, through the whole book, black people to be equal to white one, although it is said the former to have feelings, even deeper than the latter. The power either of ignorance or of hypocrisy (or, worse, of both) leads a large part of humanity through the centuries and brings people to say, for instance, even though the truth is wellknown, good is evil or vice versa. We will never learn what reality and, also, history teaches us, day by day.

CONCLUSION We wind this short essay up, hoping life to be brightest for every sort of people in the world, forever, even if we know the mixed blessing of men is to have got brain. Often, it is better to switch on the heart, letting our spiritual bent manifesting, remembering we are all Gods people. If we do like this, maybe our sun will never set.
