Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new edit ions as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edit ion, and any
amendments thereto.
Full details of all Australi an Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an

and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head offi ce of Standards Australia,
are welcomed. Noti fi cati on of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard should be made

Australian Standard Specification

for
POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE (PTFE)
MOULDED SHEET

1 SCOPE. This specification applies to moulded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)

sheet of minimum thickness 2.4 mm for mechanical, electrical and chemical

applications. It does not apply to skived tape.

NOTE: For applications requiri ng sheet of thickness less than 2.4 mm it is recommended that skived tape
be used.

2 COMPOSITION. The moulded sheet shall be manufactured from unpigmented,

PTFE resin and shall be free from any foreign material.
3 CLASSIFICATION. PTFE sheet shall be classified as follows:
Grade A — premium quality moulded sheet of which the properties shall comply
with the Grade A requirements of Table 1.
Grade B — general purpose moulded sheet of which the properties shall comply with
the Grade B requirements of Table 1.
Grade C — mechanical grade moulded sheet for non-critical applications of which
the properties shall comply with the Grade C requirements of Table 1.
Class 1 — Grade A, B or C moulded sheet conforming to the dimensional stability
requirements of Clause 12.
Class 2 — Grade A, B or C moulded sheet without specific requirement for
dimensional stability.
NOTE: It is recommended that purchasing specif ications should refer to the above classifi cati ons.

4 CONDITIONING. Samples for test shall be conditioned for 24 h at 23 ± 2°C.

NOTES:
1. PTFE mouldings do not absorb moisture so a humidity control requir ement is not specif ied.
2. PTFE undergoes a transit ion duri ng which there is a signif icant volume change in the materi al. The
majori ty of this change occurs between 19° and 20°C.

5 APPEARANCE AND FINISH. The colour of the sheet may vary from white to
mottled grey and the sheet shall be free from obvious surface defects and inclusions
that could affect its serviceability.
6 INTERNAL DEFECTS. The sheet shall be substantially homogeneous and free
from internal defects likely to affect its serviceability. Methods of test and acceptable
limits shall be agreed between purchaser and supplier.
