Sknetrafiken Website: On this website you can enter your location and your destination in the left column for anywhere in Southern Sweden (between cities or within cities). On the following pages it provides the quickest bus routes you can take (the page is in English).
http://www.skanetrafiken.se/templates/StartPage.aspx?id=2176

There is even an option to look at maps on the pages after you enter your destination. Just click the 'Map' tab on the far right. To see where the bus stop is on the map tab, just click on the square with an 'H' in it once you are on the map page. Maps: Here you can enter any street address in Sweden and it will give you a map that you can zoom in on.

Information Places in Lund: For any questions, the best places to get information in Lund are: the Tourist information office (Address: Corner of Kyrkogaten and Klostergarten, across from the main church called DomKyrkan) Telephone: (046) 355040 The AF building in the center of Campus on the Ground floor to the right of the entrance (you can find it on the map page above) The international office, which you can find on the Lund University map page above.

Groundtransportation
Bicycle: The easiest way to get around and stay warm is by bicycle. To get a bicycle for probably the cheapest price, go to the Police Stations. They keep bicycles they have confiscated from people and give them away at extremely low prices. The police station in Lund is just near the train station. The bus stop is 'Police' on bus number 4. Make sure to buy a good lock since people steal bicycles frequently. We recommend a lock which costs at least 200 SEK. There is a bicycle map for Lund that also shows the way to Malm by bike which takes 50 minutes from the southern part of Lund. To get a map go to the bicycle rental place attached to the north end of the Lund train station (they are free). A free place to get air in tires and other bicycle supplies in Lund is across from a church called Allhelgonakyrkan, on the corner of Kavlingevgen and Bredgaten. NOTE: it is against the law not to have a front and backlight on the bicycle. Bus and Train: We have put the bus and train section together because any ticket you buy for the bus is also good for the train and vice versa if your ticket is between Lund and Malm. To buy cards, see the Sknetrafiken offices in the central stations. It is near tracks 9 and 10 at the Malm station and at the Northern end of the Lund station. For a bus pass only within Lund or only within Malm, the best thing to do is to buy one monthly card which costs ~400 SEK/month. With this card there is no need to buy individual tickets. During the weeks that we have class sessions in Malm, it is better for those living in Lund to buy a one month pass that goes between Malm and Lund, and also totally within these two cities, for about 650 SEK. This monthly card is also valid for the train. There is no need to get tickets, just keep the little piece of paper in the plastic envelope your card comes in and show it on the train. If you are planning on only traveling a little between Malm and Lund, you can buy a discount card that you can use at any time (it is not limited to one month). This card gives a discount of about 20%. You also do not have to buy individual tickets for the bus, just put it in the slot. However, you will need to purchase tickets for the train using this card at the small machines at the stations. You can also be on a bus in Malm, for example, and ask the bus driver for a ticket to Lund (or Copenhagen), if you plan on taking the train within the next hour or so. The bus driver will print out a ticket you can use on the train. The last alternative is to buy individual tickets with no discount card. To ride the bus in any direction for an hour or two in Malm costs 16 SEK (maybe wrong!) and 15 SEK in Lund. Between Malm and Lund it is 39 SEK for one way. Buses between Malm and Lund: All the buses from Malm to Lund go through the main stops of Vrnhem and Sodervrn in Malm. The 171 bus starts in Lund at the Hosptial (Unversitet Sjukhuset). The 130 and 131 buses start at Bankgaten which is below one of the main squares in central Lund called Mrtenstorget. They take approximately 30 minutes to arrive at Vrnhem from Lund and 40 minutes to Sodervrn.

To Copenhagen: The cheapest way to go to Copenhagen and back is to buy a return ticket which is valid for 24 hours from the machines or to stand in line. You can use the same train ticket for busses in Copenhagen and any other trains. Most trains go through both Malm and Lund.

Airlinetickets
STA: Usually the cheapest tickets for flying to or from outside of Europe are through STA (Student Travel Agency). Every airline reserves tickets for special student prices. You will need to go to an STA agency and purchase a cheap student card in order to get this discount. Tel: 0771611010.

Buyingfood
Netto: The cheapest store is called Netto. There is a major one in Malm, located near the Vrnhem bus stop. The one in Lund is at the Vildanden bus stop on route 4 in the Southwest part of town (at the corner of Fjelievgen and Bondevgen). Willy's: Willys is the next cheapest. There are several in Malm. The one in Lund is in the Northeast side of town and is reachable on the number 4 bus at the Kmnarsvgen stop on Magistrasvgen. A good tip for making some extra cash, and doing the environment some good, is to take your plastic bottles and aluminum cans to the recycling machines located in many grocery stores. Others: The next cheapest is ICA and the COOP which are quite expensive. The advantage of these stores have is that they are more conscious about free trade and labor 4

laws when it comes to selecting products. Markets: Even cheaper than everything above is the random little markets you will find in Malm. There is one particular market in Lund on the corner of Kattesund and Grnegaten. Asian Food Store: There is an Asian food shop in Lund on the North side of Mrtenstorget called Ris & Curry. Cheap Lunch: The cheapest lunches are the many kebab places in Lund and in Malm. The BEST cheap lunch is at one of the 'Nations' in Lund. Nations are student organizations. Most of them serve a full lunch (from which they make no profit) with coffee, tea and dessert at least once per week. They are usually between 25-30 SEK. Check the student guide for the website where you will see which days the nations serve lunch. The best Nation is called stgota Nation because it serves lunch three days a week and is at the center of campus in Lund behind the Kulturen center on Adelgaten. Make sure to arrive at the Nations by 12:00 to get in line.

Shopping
Second Hand Shops: There are many second hand shops throughout Malm and in Lund on the Southern end of Stortorget. Flea Market: The cheapest place by far that some of us have found is a market where people sell used things from their homes in Lund. It starts at 6:00 on Saturdays and usually runs the entire morning. If you go to the corner of Prennegaten and Sdra Esplanaden you will see it running up Sdra Esplanaden. The earlier you go, the better chance you have of finding what you want. Tiger: This store is in Lund at Botulfsplatsen which is the main bus station. Most things in the store cost less than 10 SEK. There are also 10 SEK stores in Malm. One is located near Sdervarn. Pharmacy: The pharmacies here are called Apoteket. Ask about their discount card which is useful if you plan on spending a bit of money over the next year. Calculating money exchange: Here is website which converts any amount of any currency into another for you:

Activities
Getting involved in other activities is a way to learn skills, stay motivated, and remain mentally and physically healthy. It seems at first that you will have less time, but actually you will gain time because you will make the most of your study sessions and have more energy. 5

AIESEC: This is an amazing organization. It is a great way to meet Swedish and other international students and they provide opportunities to do paid volunteer work abroad. It is the international platform for young people to discover and develop their potential. The idea of this group is to prepare students for the future, give them leadership skills, make them take responsibilities, and enrich them with cultural exchange. If they want to take part in this group, they have to ask for it at the international office or go directly to their office on the last floor of the AF. Rock Climbing: There is a rock-climbing club, their information is in the student guide. It only costs 80 SEK for an entire semester and the equipment is provided. They also do weekend trips, so it is a great way to see other parts of Sweden Salsa Dancing: There are many opportunities to learn to salsa dance and every Friday there is either a salsa party at Mejeriet (on Stortorget in Lund) or Sargaso. There are also places in Malm. Kayak Club: If you are interested in going kayaking or canoeing in Malm there is a club that has an office in the main park next to the castle. Gyms etc.: There are many gyms available. A major one in Lund is called Victoria Stadium and is accessible from the number 4 and 2 buses at the stop 'Victoria Stadium'. They have tennis and squash courts. There is an extremely cheap student gym in Lund, as well. It costs about 400 SEK for a semester and offers aerobic classes. There are also several tennis courts around town. Movies: All rental movies and movie theaters are and are usually in their original language with subtitles in Swedish. Bowling: There are several bowling allies around Malm and Lund and this activity has been proven to be an excellent choice for getting the class together and having some fun. Clubbing: Malm has numerous options for nightlife activities. Lilla Torg offers cozy outside dining and drinking during the summer and several nightclubs are within walking distance from here. Hipp, tage, and Slagthuset offer an upbeat variety of music while KB (Kultur Bolaget) and Jeriko tend to please an alternative audience.

Libraries
We recommend meeting fellow classmates at libraries regularly to stay motivated since you won't be meeting for class on a daily basis throughout the year. This provides a chance to exchange ideas and stay focused in an academic atmosphere instead of at home surfing the net. Malm: There is the medical library in Malm that you will bcome familiar with. In Malm there is also a fantastic library owned by Malm University. It is possibly the

most inspirational library we have been in with a 360 degree view of Malm. They are open until 20:00 and have a meditation and prayer room, as well. It is next to the train station on the top floor. Here is the site for that:
http://www.mah.se/templates/Page____21846.aspx

Lund: There is a medical library in Lund as well. The main library is also extremely atmospheric and nice. Below is a site which shows a map of all the libraries in Lund. Number 27 is the medical library. Number 32 is the main University Library:

Sightseeing
This is a general website for tourism in Lund:

Places to definitely see include the Malm Castle and Museum in the Northwest part of town. The Old Town near the center and the Turning Torso also with the beaches in the North.

Swedishlanguage
If you are interested in cheap or free language courses check out this website:

Finances
Since tuition is paid for, the only cost associated with the program is the cost of books and the biannual charge of about ~150 SEK which you have to pay to be a student in Sweden. When school is not in session, getting a part-time job can be a good way of getting some extra cash and getting your mind off of school, as well as meeting new people and learning a little about the Swedish and European culture. In order to get a job you have to have a personal identification number for tax purposes, which you will receive when you begin your studies here. Here is a website that offers you some more information about job seeking in Sweden:

Housing
Although most academic programs at Lund University are situated in Lund, the Medical Faculty, where the Master of Public Health Program is taught, is located in Malm. Malm is by Swedish terms a big city, and finding a cheap place is by no means impossible, but can a little tricky. Most of the students pay around 3000 to 4000 SEK/month for their place, and those who share a place with someone naturally pay a little less. Here are a few sites that may be helpful in finding a place to live:
http://www.mah.se/templates/Page____13785.aspx http://www.blocket.se/search?q=&caller=mo_s&l=0&city=0&category=56&where=0 http://www.lus.lu.se/bopoolen/eng/?PHPSESSID=52aeaae87a056cde1a73f4b8f7efee6d http://www.lu.se/o.o.i.s/586

Insurance
The woman in charge of insurance for students is: Annike Hemmingson, Box 117, 22100,

Lund. The building is Byralogen 2nd floor. It is the building to the right of the one that houses the international office.

Personalnumber
If you can, it is helpful to get a Swedish Person Number. It is available for students who are here for one year or more. Some students were able to get it, others were denied because their resident visa was for only 10-11 months, not 12. If you get accepted into another program following this one, you will be eligible for it. Visit the tax office with your information. The advantages to having the number are that you pay less for visits to the doctor or hospital. Also you may be eligible to get a Swedish bank account and to buy insurances.

Communication
Skype: The cheapest way to make international calls, and sometimes calls to Swedish landlines, is Skype. It is a computer program which allows you to make calls through the Internet. If the person you are calling has Skype the call if FREE anywhere in the world, including Africa, Asia, Latin America. If the person you are calling does not have Skype the call is usually only 0.017 Euros per minute (check the rates for your specific country). To use Skype, you will need a pair of headphones. Previous students used Skype in the computer barracks in Malm and in the computer rooms of building 59.
http://www.skype.com

Star Card: The next cheapest option for making international calls is the Star Card, which you can buy in any Pressbyrn store or other kind of convenience store. There is a PIN code that you can use from any phones, preferably landline. Comviq for cell phones: For your mobile phones we recommend Comviq because they have cheap rates between people who have Comviq. The SIM card costs about 100 SEK. Then the following credit costs 100 SEK and above. There is another option called Comviq Amigos for which you have to buy at least 200 SEK at a time. With this option it is possible to make reasonably cheap calls (but not as cheap as the Skype or the Star Card) directly from your phone without dialing a pin code.
