Chaparral Middle School Opens New Gymnasium with Ceremony

The construction of Chaparrals gymnasium was made possible by measures S and Y. These measures concerning modernization projects were passed in 2007. Justo Lamas Performs in the DBHS Theater

SING-A-LONG: Tickets were sold from Monday, February 7, to Friday, February 11, during lunch in room 286. Tickets were offered in all the Spanish classes as well. Michelle Lee Asst. Business Manager Diamond Bar High Schools Spanish Club hosted its third annual Justo Lamas Concert in the DBHS theater on Wednesday, February 23, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The concert was part of Lamas 2011 to 2012 tour, Lo Mejor de Mi. In the past years, we usually had full houses. This year were expecting the same, if not better, said senior Keith Sakata, the President of Spanish Club. Lamas is an Argentinean singer who tours and performs concerts in many schools in the United States. He was introduced to DBHS Spanish teacher Chris Buccola in 1998. During the concert, Lamas sang songs such as De Colores, Eres T, Siempre Por Siempre, and La Bamba. Lamas also incorporated interactive activities such as a soccer competition and a Spanish tongue twister contest. A number of students were picked from the audience to participate in the activities. Five selected singers auditioned to sing along with Lamas. I was one of the participants in an activity and I thought [the concert] was really exciting because [Justo] really got us into it. He really makes [us] feel like were all part of [the concert], commented sophomore Katharina Miyoshi. The concert also featured a video clip about Lamas retirement from his career. In the video clip, Lamas mentioned another singer named Ennio Emmanuel that will be taking his place after he retires. I will keep singing. Im not going to tour as much as I do right now, but I want to do a few shows in small places. I just want to be relaxed and be with my kids, explained Lamas. The event was opened to the public, but most of the attendees were students taking Spanish as their foreign language course in DBHS. I found [the concert] very exciting! Justo was energetic and his songs were very enjoyable, commented junior Sean Wang. He added, I loved how he connected with the people in the audience. After the performance, attendees had the opportunity to meet Lamas, take pictures with him, and purchase merchandise sold at a table in the theater. Lamas books, CDs, postcards, posters, and t-shirts were sold by Spanish Club members. Spanish Club promoted the concert by painting posters and selling tickets to students in Spanish classes. They started preparing for the concert in January. Tickets were sold from Monday, February 7, to Friday, February 11, during lunch in room 286. Tickets were offered in all the Spanish classes as well. They were $13 for nonSpanish Club members and $12 for Spanish Club members. We had a sellout concert, said Buccola. She added, [Justo] has been coming to DBHS since 1998, so were sad to hear about [his retirement], but we know that its best for his family.

Friendly Reminder
Starting July 1, 2011, a new law (AB 354) changing California immunization requirements for all students entering 7th-12th grade goes into effect. The law requires that this coming school year (2011-2012), all students will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster shot called Tdap. The Tdap is a booster vaccine that protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough. The new requirements will help prevent people from getting the whooping cough. Make an appointment today to get the booster. Children as young as ten years of age are recommended to get vaccinated. Turn in proof of immunization to your school. Uninsured or underinsured students may qualify for the Vaccines for Children Program; call 1-877-243-8832 or visit www.eziz.org/pages/vfc_ locations2.html. You can also see what immunizations the school has on file for you on parent portal. Check your immunization records to see if the school has all doses on file that have been given. AB 354 requires students to obtain the vaccine or complete the permanent medical exemption with a MD note or persional beliefs exemption prior to July 1, 2011. Any student who does not have proof of getting the booster or have an exemption will not be allowed to start school until they give proof of one or the other to their school. Mother Mayhem
Christine Song Asst. Buisness Manager The recent release of Amy Chuas novel, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, has stirred up a great deal of controversy in the media. The Wall Street Journal publication of an excerpt of the book, titled Why Chinese Mothers are Superior, has elicited heavy criticism, ranging from angry blog posts to websites completely dedicated to scrutinizing Chuas novel and parenting methods. The excerpt criticizes the lenient parenting technique while promoting a philosophy that says children should not be allowed to make decisions for themselves. According to the article, most childrens decisions will be for their own pleasure, while the decisions that parents make will be for their benefit. Although some of Chuas techniques may be questionable, it is doubtless that many people have not only overreacted, but they have also overlooked the effectiveness of her parenting method. The novel describes the differences between two ways of parenting: the compassionate, where children are praised for effort and not success, and the strict, which does the opposite. Chua is often only recognized for her strict and controlling methods, but readers never recognize that she has ensured her daughters success. It goes without saying that Chua has restricted her daughters creativity by refusing to allow them to participate in any activities that she deems unnecessary to their success. Her daughters are limited to only certain careers that will allow them to achieve a moderate sort of success in life. Although many people are worried that this creates a great disadvantage because her daughters were never allowed to pursue interests in which they might have excelled, it is undeniable that she has guaranteed that they will land stereotypically successful jobs by not accepting any possibility of failure. Many readers made angry comments and published criticizing blog posts depicting Chuas techniques outlined in the novel as cruel, but they fail to realize that Chua does highlight a very common fault in the more lenient parenting style: the inability to be truthful to ones children for fear of hurting them. Children need to know where to improve or it becomes difficult to do so later on in their lives. Constructive criticism is often more helpful than hurtful, yet most readers are unable to consider this objectively because they are too preoccupied with the more controversial aspects presented in Chuas argument. In their responses, readers only discuss how she forces her seven-yearold daughter to master a difficult piano piece, even going to the extremes of not letting her get up to use the bathroom and making her skip dinner. Many people also argue that Chuas actions in restricting her daughters from attending sleepovers and having playdates, which are considered common teenage pastimes, were unwarranted. Because readers only highlight these two incidents from her novel, it blinds most readers from the truth in her philosophy that lead to her daughters inevitable success in going to college and gaining a career. Although Chua is very strict and, at times, an unreasonable parent, readers must acknowledge that her parenting methods have ensured that her daughters will succeed in life. Before people begin condemning her actions and forming judgements, they need to understand that although she took her parenting to many extremes, she has provided for her daughters a necessary academic skill set and mentality that they can fall back on for the rest of their lives.

Too Much Skin

Justin Park Contributing Staff Writer Music Televisions newest adaptation of the British teen drama, Skins , was recently dubbed the most dangerous program by the Parents Television Council and was at the center of a heated debate among student and adult viewers alike. Only weeks after Skins premiered, nationwide backlash against the programs repulsive portrayal of inappropriate teen behavior has grown massively in the entertainment industry. There is no denying that the shows explicit content is unacceptable for television broadcast, even for a program intended for mature audiences only. In order to create a more appropriate television program for viewers, the offensive content in Skins must be promptly removed. Judging by the countless angry parents generated from the first few episodes, it seems like child pornography would be an accurate description for MTVs Skins . The PTC claimed that a hefty amount of racy scenes in the show involve adolescent actors as young as fifteen, glaringly too immature to star in any sexual content. The current child pornography

law states that creating and distributing sexually-explicit content of minors is a serious act of crime and could lead to decades-long sentences in federal prison. The producers of MTV are guilty for committing this very crime, as they have knowingly produced and aired sexually inappropriate c o n t e n t involving minors. The producers failed to carry this important responsibility. The PTC has already filed a complaint to the United States Department of Justice regarding the possibility that Skins might be breaking the law on child pornography. In an effort to explore the issue further, the PTC is also requesting that the programs viewers contact their state Attorney General for a legal investigation on MTV and the local cable or satellite providers. Such legal input made by one of the most influential organizations of television industry should not be overlooked by any viewers. The PTCs action on raising

There is no denying that the shows explicit content is unacceptable for television broadcast

awareness of the programs danger was neccessary, but is certainly not enough to make an impact on a multi-million-dollar broadcasting station like MTV. Although Skins has not been classified as pornographic material just yet, a specific scene in one of its episodes p r o v e d otherwise to many viewers. The scene depicts a teenage c h a r a c t e r, named Chris, w a l k i n g a r o u n d entirely naked while displaying blatant signs of heavy drug usage. Surprisingly, the actor who played the role is only seventeen years old. If the producers were responsible enough to hire adult actors instead of minors, their violation of the law could have been easily avoided. For example, other successful teenage-based television shows, such as Glee, opted to hire actors older than the teenage characters they play. In regards to the ongoing debate questioning the legality

of Skins , MTV expressed that incorporating graphic scenes to the program was a necessary evil, as it is presenting realworld issues of teens to the public audience in a frank way. However, MTV neglected to realize that their program is helping those particular issues grow and they are discreetly attracting more youths to engage in them. By seeing people of their own age group involved in seemingly exciting crimes on television, children will likely be motivated to believe that teenage delinquency is a worthwhile experience. These persistent problems with Skins have been recognized by the programs advertisers and caused many of them to withdraw their sponsorships as a result. Their decision to reject Skins was sensible, as endorsing it would undoubtedly deteriorate their companys image. Advertisers actions alone should speak volumes about the negative effects this distasteful program brings to others, and the desperate need to bring action in order to stop it. If viewers of Skins choose to stay ignorant toward this threatening issue, the future of American media as well as the children of this generation may fall into great danger.

Millions of users log on to Facebook each day and with its recent movie release, it has easily become the largest social networking website around. In prospect, the website has allowed people from all across the world to strengthen their relationships with friends and acquaintances and even rekindle past friendships. Even more so, the growth of Facebook is taking place at school where some students and teachers are forming relationships. Some say that these relationships should be encouraged so that students and teachers can have a closer relationship. However, a positive relationship between a teacher and student outside of school is rare. Allowing such a relationship will only encourage bias and should not be allowed outside of school. A teacher should be considered a role model or a mentor to his or her students not a friend. Facebook contains more information than should be revealed in an educational setting and often times blur the line between a teacher and a friend. If a teacher were to become too friendly with a student, the student may be graded more easily and provide an unfair advantage to his peers. Teachers do not only lose a sense of professionalism by becoming too friendly, but they can also lose the respect of their students. Similarly, if a teacher has the ability to see conversations that are meant to be had between students, it may lead to an awkward relationship between the teacher and his or

Eye of the Editors

her students. Schools should take responsibility for this by not allowing such friendships that could interfere with a students learning process. Facebook contains an excessive amount of personal information that should not be available to teachers. Friendships between teachers and students on Facebook can cause an unbalance in the grading system. A teachers relationship with one student may become stronger, but in turn, it puts other students at a disadvantage. On the other hand, a teacher might see pictures of students doing things that, in school, would be inappropriate. As a result of this, what once was a professional relationship could likely be damaged. It is the teachers responsibility to refrain from adding students to their friend list in order to avoid unfairness and to stay professional. There are ways to keep a professional and friendly relationship between students and teachers without exposing information that should not be shared. Students can email or visit a teacher personally for educational advice, rather than having a Facebook relationship. This way, the student and teacher can keep a healthy, professional relationship while refraining from forming unnecessary friendships. Facebook is not a necessary tool in a teacher-student relationship. Both teachers and students must realize this so they can maintain a professional learning environment.

Cutting Off Cairo

Laura Moffitt Asst. Feature Editor Without the Internet, jobs would suffer, businesses would not be able to place orders, students would be unable to complete their work, and the everyday activities of people across the world would be disrupted. The Internet should not be governed by anyone just as it cannot be owned by anyone. If the government were to have this ability, there would be no limit to their power to control the information released to the public via the Internet. Still, some countries like Egypt are dictated by a government that uses its power to manipulate this crucial part of the twentyfirst century lifestyle. This type of government control must end in order to protect the rights of people to use the Internet freely. For example, the Egyptian government, led by President Hosni Mubarak, turned off the countrys Internet in order to keep rebellions against the current government from being further organized. Government officials cut off Internet access to the majority of the country with ease by shutting down the Domain Name System servers used by Egyptian Internet service providers. An Egyptian company that was instructed to shut down its DNS servers stated that under Egyptian legislation, the government has the right to issue such an order and they are obliged to comply with it. This sort of power makes it so that the people of Egypt are stripped of what should be their right to assemble and communicate via the Internet, putting them at the complete mercy of their own

government. The Egyptian government turned the Internet off during the rebellion and left its citizens unable to protect themselves against this violation of their natural rights. In order to prevent further attacks like this on the Egyptians freedoms, it is imperative that their government creates a more effective way to protect the citizens from violations of their rights. The Egyptian government is not the only country that has attempted to manipulate the Internet. Some politicians in the United States have proposed the development of an Internet kill switch that our own government could use in the case of a national emergency. With a third of the nation spending 40 hours per week online, this could cause many Americans to rise against our government as well. No government should put a mechanism like this into place. The Egyptian government has controlled the information available to the rest of the world with little interference. After the Egyptian government turned off the countrys internet, nearly 88 percent of Egypts Internet traffic was removed and even more revolutionaries rebelled against the government. Our generation is dependent on the Internet. Because of its contributions to both media and business endeavors, the removal of the Internet ignited violent rebellions and is a prime example of why governments should not be allowed to manipulate something that plays such a vital role in todays society. Laws must be made in order to protect the Internet from being controlled by any government so that it can be used by everyone.

This will greatly benefit frequent fliers and flight crews, who, in order to board the plane, must frequently go through the scanners at the entrance of terminals. For now, we cannot take chances with a new system that would impair the TSAs ability to secure an airport. Instead, we must focus are attention on the security of each airport terminal, not the privacy of the passengers. There is room for improvement, but a better medium can be found, where both security and privacy is enhanced. Until then, the TSA cannot waste time nor money. Placing passengers at a heightened risk because of poorly conceived projects that could bring unnecessary threats into the terminal is irresponsible. If national security is continually pressed with matters of privacy issues, progress in its safety measures will cease and seemingly comfortable passengers will be put in situations of increased danger because of it.

Ashley Ahn Feature Editor Dear President Barack Obama, Your State of the Union address was quite inspiring, and behind your strong demeanor, powerful rhetoric, and ability to receive frequent standing ovations, I could find nothing but potentially brilliant plans for the future and a delightful reminder of what you promised two years ago. I know you will get around to those promises someday. In fact, I find it quite admirable that you constantly look for ways to improve our nation before finding success in your first projects. It is obvious that you have been hard at work trying to win the future, so it seems to me that it does not matter if you cannot finish what you started, as long as you keep churning out those fantastic ideas. Let us be honest: America did not vote for you because you carry out your actions with diligence, but because you would not stop talking. With that said, I still have a few reasons for voting for you next term: I do not know if you realize this, but Americans are always up for a good challenge and we are especially excited for your latest and greatest, Race to the Top. Please let us take a moment to applaud while forgetting why schools are so important. I can honestly say that I cannot wait for you to shower teachers with money when they explain their elaborate plan to make school dominate the education system, but why do only that when we can dominate much more, like the world perhaps? A wise man once said, We need to out innovate, out educate, and out build the rest of the world. Sounds like winning the future to me. If only you had your hand in every decision our school s y s t e m s make. Cue the uproarious applause here. On to the next reason: clean energy. Insert standing ovation here. Let us give a round of applause to this very enthusiastic American. M r. P r e s i d e n t , n o w what I am really impressed about is the amount of jobs that will be available to me in the future. Machines and technology seem to be taking over everything! You even said it yourself: thousands of workers are being put out of a job because of these machines. What once used to be an assembly line of people is now a single computer firing off data one way or another, getting things done in a blink of an eye. I hope that with this advance in technology, like in the past, will open up more job positions. I trust you Mr. President. I know you will make this happen...eventually. Now, one more round of applause. So Mr. President, as you can see, you are doing an amazing job running our country. You are a flawless leader and should stop at nothing to continue with your plans to win the future. Please respond as quickly as you can, the soothing applause is beginning to make me feel a tad drowsy. Sincerely, A dedicated American

Clothing Conundrum
Jasmine Hsu Contributing Staff Writer Lately, many people have been selling their things on the popular social networking site, Facebook. It is not unusual to see people creating albums titled, For Sale! containing pictures of clothes, shoes, or accessories. News Feeds are lling up with announcements of new items for sale, which range from $100 designer jeans to $1 earrings. Girls have started selling outts and accessories, and boys are putting their shoes and jeans up for people to buy. Why is everyone doing this? Justin Kong Feature Theme/Photo Editor This recent spell of selling on Facebook is attracting much more attention than one would think. A lot of people are either starting up their own little businesses or ghting over the cute items being sold. I was actually surprised that people responded at all because, originally, I was just planning on selling it to one person, but then other people wanted to buy clothes, too, said senior Serena Nguyen, expressing her shock at the number of people clamoring for her clothes. It is a mystery when this will all die down. Maybe Facebook is the future department store!

Every month, we will bring you some of the most ridiculous, hilarious, at-out idiotic, and sometimes insightful things we hear around campus. So bewarewell be listening. Girl: Will you be my Valentine? Boy: Yeah sure...next year. Girl: Did you know Obamas rst name is Barack?! Teacher to student: I dreamed about you. Girl 1: I like your earring! Girl 2: You mean my infection? Girl 1: My lip gloss is hot, my lip gloss is poppin! Girl 2: Thats chapstick... Girl: Sorry, my eyebrow is itchy. Boy: What eyebrows? Girl: I want to go to rehab! Boy 1: Whats that nasty smell? Boy 2: Thats your feet, dude. Boy 1: No its nooh.

I had a lot of clothes I no longer wore that were wasting away in my closet, and I needed to make room for new clothes, stated freshman Ellen Jeong, who joined the Facebook selling frenzy a while ago. Instead of throwing them away like I usually do, I decided I should try selling them. You know what they say, One mans trash is another mans treasure. Whats so great about selling clothes on Facebook is how amazingly simple and easy it is. You just comment on the picture you want and meet up with the seller. Plus, who doesnt like cute clothes for a cheaper price?

Selling your things on Facebook is a great way to earn money. I just needed a quick buck and I got what I wanted, said junior Joe Yun. Im not even updating [the album] because I dont really need the money. If people want to buy it then Ill sell, but Im not putting in anymore effort in my sales as of now. It seems he is not keen on selling clothes for a long time, though he was able to get fast cash. Many students can just forget about getting a job and start a business on Facebook!

horoscope hullabaloo
Lea Chang Asst. Feature Editor Astrologers have only recently figured out that our zodiac signs may not really be what we think them to be. Apparently, a sign called Ophiuchus was thrown out of the horoscopes back when they were rst invented. S o m e astrologists are now attempting to bring the zodiac sign back. According to these astrologers from the Minnesota Planetarium Society, the zodiac signs should be divided in this way: January 20 to February 16 (Capricorn), February 16 to March 11 (Aquarius), March 11 to April 18 (Pisces), April 18 to May 13 (Aries), May 13 to June 21 (Taurus), June 21 to July 20 (Gemini), July 20 to August 10 (Cancer), August 10 to September 16 (Leo), September 16 to October 30 (Virgo), October 30 to November 23 (Libra), November 23 to 29 (Scorpio), November 29 to December 17 (Ophiuchus), and December 17 to Jan 20 (Sagittarius). There is some overlap between the new set of signs and the old, but for the most part, the horoscopes have changed because the newly added Ophiuchus has made every sign shift over a number of days. Later on, it was found I was never one to put my faith in mystical crystal balls, zodiac signs, or tarot cards and the like. Although there is the occasional coincidence, no matter how I look at it, the position of the planets and the stars when I was born have no inuence whatsoever o n m y personality, love life, or chances of winning the lottery. In fact, numerous scientists call horoscopes just about as true as the idea of crop circles being created by aliens. On top of that, the idea that I could suddenly go from an extroverted, versatile and always optimistic Gemini to a quiet, rather boring bull, or Taurus, made me even more of a skeptic. In short, I must conclude that zodiac signs are a childs gamenothing but mere make-believe. Personally, I put no value whatsoever into the words of the horoscopes on the Sunday newspaper. However, it may be interesting to see every once in a while what the stars claim to have in store for their respective zodiac signs.

Extraction
Colene Eng Staff Writer Oh, no! your dentist exclaims. It seems as if were going to have to extract your wisdom teeth! Just what, exactly, does this mean? Having had these words recited back to me in middle school, I know from a rst-hand experience the feeling of having wisdom teeth removed. Two nights prior to my procedure, my parents permitted me to choose a restaurant of my liking. I wanted my last meal with my wisdom teeth to be delicious. There, my friend told me about how much the surgery would hurt, and how much my mouth would swell up. I laughed it off, thinking that he was exaggerating his story in an attempt to scare me. T h e morning of the procedure, as the doctors led me to the room where I was to lose m y f o u r w i s d o m teeth, I felt the rst rippling wave of fear. I struggled to remain in my positive state of mind as my friends words kept repeating in my head. Then, the nurse put an anesthesia mask over my nose and instructed me to count to ten. I remember being determined to stay awake, but obviously, that did not happen. The next thing I remember was the doctor shaking me awake from my nap and telling me to go to the waiting room. When I stood up, a wave of nausea struck me, and the room started spinning. This was not a good start to my recovery process. As the days passed, I realized that nausea was the least of my problems my cheeks swelled up to around three times their usual size. Due to their outrageous shape, many people stared at me, making me feel embarrassed. Furthermore, the pain was unbearable. T h e first t w o days after my surgery, I took the maximum number of pain relievers but no matter how many pills I popped, there was always a dull throb in my mouth. No matter what I tried to do to alleviate the pain, there was no effective remedy. As the veins in my mouth tried to reconnect, I felt sporadic moments of sharp pain. Also, I was not able to fully open my mouth because of the soreness, which restricted me to liquid foods such as porridge. The procedure was torturing. My low pain tolerance might have contributed to my experience, but then again, who really likes to have their teeth yanked out? Though some may have an easier time, it would be safe to say that there is denitely a certain degree of discomfort after this surgery.

that this new zodiac sign had actually been around since the idea of horoscopes was even invented. People born under the sign of Ophiuchus are supposedly poetic, enviable, and extremely wise and knowledgeable. However, the sign is part of a different set of horoscopes used mostly in Eastern cultures. So, in reality, although quite intriguing, this new Ophiuchus sign has hardly anything to do with us at all.

Although the price of putting an advertisement into the Super Bowl denitely puts a dent in any companys funds, if executed correctly, the commercial can certainly make a pretty penny. Seeing as the Super Bowl is the most watched event on television, it only makes sense that its commercials are the most watched as well. Woo has been pursuing her love for basketball since the young, uncoordinated age of five. Four years of high school basketball under her belt, three of which were on varsity, have molded her into not only a great point guard but also the exceptional team captain she is today. Her position requires her to be quick on her feet as she leads her team to the net and helps to develop insight and teamwork. On the court, Woo makes quick decisions, communicates plays, and gives directions to her fellow Brahmas. There is a misconception that athletes prioritize sports over academics, but with a grade point average of 3.89, Woo proves otherwise. Woo manages to juggle school work, friends, playing basketball for the school team and staying loyal to her 12-year commitment to her club team, the West Covina Sabers. She intends to continue playing basketball recreationally in college while majoring in engineering. This choice transpires from her proficiency in math, as she is currently taking Advanced Placement Calculus BC along with AP Economics. Woo currently has her eyes set on going to the University of California, San Diego. With basketball season over, Woo is beginning to really appreciate the years she has been playing. Its sad to know that all the hard work I put into it is ending and I wont get to see my friends as much, expressed Woo.
