When to Apply:
You may apply to Harvard under either our Early Action or our Regular Action program. Designed to provide freedom and flexibility for our applicants, both options allow students to compare admission and financial aid offers from other institutions and to wait until May 1 to make a final college choice. Early Action candidates apply by November 1 and receive notification by December 15. Regular Action candidates apply by January 1 and receive notification by April 1. While the final deadline is January 1, it would be very helpful to us to receive your application by December 15 so that we can create your admissions file as early as possible. For more information about whether to apply to Harvard (or other colleges) under Early admission, please refer to the next page.
Testing Requirements:
While Harvard honors the College Boards Score Choice program and allows you to submit tests taken as late as January for consideration, we advise Regular Action candidates to complete and submit at least one component of the required tests (SAT, ACT with Writing or two College Board Subject Tests) by the end of November. This will allow us to begin our evaluation process for those submitting applications by December 15. For Early Action candidates, we hope to receive all testing results by the end of October, but students are still eligible to apply using the November series. Those results will arrive in time for consideration without the need and expense of rush reporting.
Should Students Apply for Early Admission or Wait Until Regular Action?
Early Action began at Harvard in the 1970s. Designed to provide freedom and flexibility, Early Action gives students an early indication of their chances for admission. Those admitted early are free to apply to other colleges, compare financial aid offers from other institutions, and need only make their final college choice by May 1, the national Common Reply Date. Initially, Early Action (and other early admission programs such as Early Decision, which requires admitted students to enroll), received little attention. Relatively small numbers of students applied early, and the overwhelming majority of students waited to apply Regular Action. Today, more students apply early to college. Students and their parents are more sophisticated about the college admissions process. They begin the college search earlier and with better information than previous generations. College guidebooks, use of the Internet, and media coverage of college admissions and financial aid have increased markedly. In addition, colleges have reached out as never before in their efforts to recruit talented students.
Early Decision
Early Decision is the early admission program offered by the majority of national colleges and universities (but not Harvard). Students must commit in advance to attend the Early Decision college if admitted under its early program. Some Early Decision colleges offer students a better chance of admission if they apply early. Students admitted Early Decision who seek financial aid can be released from their commitment to enroll if their financial aid award vary significantly from their ability to pay.
Early Action
Harvard College and a number of other institutions offer the Early Action option on the same timetable as Early Decision: a November 1 application deadline and a mid-December notification. There is, however, a significant difference between the programs: Early Action is non-binding, meaning that admitted students are not obligated to enroll. In contrast to some Early Decision colleges, Harvard does not offer an advantage to students who apply early. Historically, higher Early Action acceptance rates have reflected the remarkable strength of Early Action applicant poolsnot less rigorous admissions standards. For any individual student, the final decision will be the same whether the student applies early or regular. There is no incentive whatsoever for Early Action colleges to admit weaker candidates early and then have to reject stronger Regular Action candidates. Diminishing the quality of the student body would be antithetical to the goals of the institution. If Harvard had seen an institutional advantage in using Early Action, it would not have eliminated the program for three years.
A student admitted Early Action has until May 1, as do all admitted students, to accept his or her place in the entering class. Secure in the knowledge that they have one college option, students admitted Early Action share all the advantages of Regular Action applicants. They can take the full senior year to apply to as many colleges as they wish and take the timevisiting campuses and gathering additional informationto make a definitive college choice. This freedom to choose a college over an extended period of time may account in part for Harvards graduation rate, which, at 98 percent, is among the nations highest. 2. Multiple financial aid options Students admitted Early Action (and, of course, Regular Action) have the option to compare a variety of financial aid offers if
they choose to apply to other colleges during their senior year. Financial aid can be a decisive factor in choosing a college. In order to advance the fundamental goal of admitting the best students without regard to their financial circumstances, last year Harvard awarded about $158 million in financial aid to meet each familys demonstrated financial need. Nearly 70 percent of Harvard students receive some form of financial aid and more than 60 percent receive scholarship aid. All of Harvards aid is need-based. Students and families should feel comfortable with their financial aid offerlong-term college satisfaction can depend upon it.
Our experience with Early Action fortifies our commitment to its original goals of providing students and their families freedom and flexibility in choosing the best college and financial aid options. For over a generation, both Regular Action and Early Action have allowed students to use the full senior year to reflect on their future plans and to focus on which college will provide the best educational foundation for their individual needs and aspirations.
Early Action Versus Regular Action: Practical Advice on Choosing When to Apply to College
In the absence of any strategic advantage to applying under either the Early Action or the Regular Action program at Harvard, students should consider these factors: For many good candidates, Regular Action offers an important practical advantage in the later application deadline (January 1), allowing more time to complete applications to Harvard and other colleges. Teachers and guidance counselors supporting the application will have more time to become familiar with the student. Regular Action is clearly preferable for those whose candidacies will be strengthened by senioryear extracurricular achievements and improved academic performance. For applicants whose records and accomplishments have been consistently strong over time, Early Action may be an attractive choice. Harvards Early Action program allows admitted students to apply to other colleges during their Regular Action programs and use the rest of the senior year until May 1, the national Common Reply Date, to compare admission and financial aid offers and make their final college choices.
Applying to Harvard
Application Components
The following forms are required for all students wishing to enter Harvard College as freshmen in the fall of 2012: Common Application OR the Universal College Application Harvard Application Supplement Secondary School Report International Supplement, if applicable Two Teacher Evaluations Mid-Year School Report (not required of students who have already
graduated)
Standardized Testing
We require the SAT Reasoning Test or ACT Test with Writing, as well as two SAT Subject Tests. Students should not submit two Subject Tests in mathematics to meet this requirement. Candidates whose first language is not English should ordinarily not use a Subject Test in their first language to meet the two Subject Tests requirement. Students are free to use the College Board Score Choice option or the similar option offer by the ACT. Our official codes are 3434 for the College Board SAT Reasoning and Subject Tests and 1840 for the ACT. Directions for sending your official scores to the admissions office can be found at http://sat.collegeboard.com/student/scores/send-sat-scores.html for the SAT and SAT Subject Tests and www.actstudent.org/scores/send/ for the ACT. When registering for tests, please use your name as it will appear on your Harvard application. Using a nickname may prevent your scores from matching the rest of your application in our database. In order for your application to be considered complete, we must have official test scores submitted directly to Harvard by the testing agency on your behalf. If we do not receive your official scores from the testing agency, we will be unable to make an admission decision. Please plan accordingly.
Please make copies of all completed forms as materials can get lost in the mail. Please Note: All students in the U.S. or abroad who have completed one year at a single university by the summer of 2012 should apply as transfer students. Please visit http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/ apply/transfer/ for more information about our transfer program.
Application Fee
Please attach the check or money order to the first page of the application and ensure that the applicants name appears on the payment. You may also pay your application fee online with a credit card via the Common Application or the Universal College Application websites. If paying the application fee would cause a hardship for your family, please request a fee waiver. You or your guidance counselor may use one of the official forms or may simply write a short letter asking us to waive your fee.
Application Deadlines
Final Early Action Deadline: November 1, 2011. You must send ALL application materials by this deadline for Early Action consideration. Please send us the Common Application or Universal College Application, the Harvard Supplement and the $75 application fee (or simple fee waiver request) as soon as you can and by October 15 if at all possible. This will allow us to create and begin processing your file. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT EARLY ADMISSION: Students applying to Harvard under the Early Action program are not permitted to apply early elsewhere in the fall under Single Choice Early Action or Early Decision programs. Harvard will rescind any offer of admission to a student who does so. Students are allowed to apply in the fall to public institutions under rolling or other non-binding programs. They may also apply in the fall to any institution under its Regular Action program and to foreign colleges and universities on any application schedule. After students receive notification from Harvards Early Action program (around December 15), they are free to apply to any institution under any plan, including binding programs such as Early Decision II. Students admitted under an Early Decision program at another college must withdraw any pending application to Harvard and are not eligible for admission. Final Regular Action Deadline: January 1, 2012. You must send ALL application materials by this deadline for Regular Action consideration. Please send us the Common Application or Universal College Application, the Harvard Supplement and the $75 application fee (or simple fee waiver request) as soon as you can, and by December 15 if at all possible. This will allow us to create and begin processing your file.

All Applicants
Harvard Admission Policy
Harvard University makes all decisions concerning applicants, students, faculty and staff on the basis of the individuals qualifications to contribute to Harvards educational objectives and institutional needs. Discriminating against individuals on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, national or ethnic origin, political beliefs, veteran status or disability unrelated to course requirements is inconsistent with the purposes of a university and with the law.
E-Mail Decisions
You may indicate whether you would like to have your decision sent to you via e-mail. If you choose this option, please alter your e-mail filters to allow messages from college@fas.harvard.edu and fileroom@ fas.harvard.edu to reach your inbox. An official decision letter will be sent via regular mail to all applicants, even those who have received an e-mail notification.
Misrepresentation of Credentials
Occasionally, a candidate for admission will make inaccurate statements or submit false material in connection with his or her application. In most cases, these misrepresentations are discovered during the admission process and the applicant is denied admission. If a misrepresentation is discovered after a candidate has been admitted, the offer of admission normally will be withdrawn. If a misrepresentation is discovered after a student has registered, the offer of admission normally will be revoked and the student will be required to leave the College. If the discovery occurs after a degree has been awarded, the degree normally will be rescinded. The determination that an application is inaccurate or contains misrepresentations rests solely with the Admissions Office and will be resolved outside the student disciplinary process.
Testing Requirements
Even if you are submitting the results of your school leaving exams (e.g., A-levels, International Baccalaureate, Abitur, etc.) you must submit the results of the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT (with Writing, if available), as well as the results of two SAT Subject Tests by the appropriate deadline. A candidate whose first language is not English should ordinarily not take the SAT Subject test in his or her native language as one of the two required SAT Subject Tests. All students are encouraged to submit additional Subject Tests (which may include one in a students first language), Students are not required to take the TOEFL unless they do not have access to other standardized tests.
Interviews
While we try to make interviews widely available, it is not always possible to arrange one abroad. No candidate is at a disadvantage if an interview cannot be arranged. Please see our website to determine whether an interview is possible in your home country.
Translations
We appreciate the effort that many applicants make in providing the Admissions Committee with a translation of the recommendations submitted on their behalf. We ask, however, that any translations include the name of the translator and that the original untranslated reports be submitted as well.
Application Fee
You may pay online by credit card via the Common Application or the Universal Application websites. Please be sure that your credit card has been activated for Internet transactions. If paying by check, international applicants should send us the application fee in the form of a foreign drafta check in U.S. dollars that is drawn through a U.S. bank, which is generally available at most foreign banks. To send the fee to us via wire transfer, please send an e-mail to college@ fas.harvard.edu and we will send instructions on how to do so. Please be sure to include your full name, date of birth and name of high school in your message.

Occasionally, students feel that college application forms do not provide sufficient opportunity to convey important information about themselves or their accomplishments. If you wish to include an additional essay, you may do so. Possible Topics: Unusual circumstances in your life Travel or living experiences in other countries Books that have most affected you An academic experience (course, project, paper or research topic) that has meant the most to you A list of books you have read during the past twelve months
FOR STUDENTS APPLYING FROM SCHOOLS OUTSIDE THE U.S. AND CANADA (regardless of citizenship)
When will your secondary school leaving or qualifying examination results be available to Harvard?
Month/day/year
What specific plan do you have, if any, for using the education you hope to receive?
If interviews are available in your area, have you had or have you scheduled an admissions interview?
Yes
When? Where? With Whom?
No
Please state reason
Please see our website to determine whether an interview is possible in your home country: www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/apply/international/interviews.html.
Students applying to Harvard under the Early Action program are not permitted to apply early elsewhere in the fall under Single Choice Early Action or Early Decision programs. Harvard will rescind any offer of admission to a student who does so. Students are allowed to apply in the fall to public institutions under rolling or other non-binding programs, and they may apply to colleges under Interim Decision programs, that inform applicants of admission after January 1. They may also apply to any institution under its Regular Action program and to foreign colleges and universities on any application schedule. After students receive notification from Harvards Early Action program (around December 15), they are free to apply to any institution under any plan, including binding programs such as Early Decision II. Students admitted under an Early Decision program at another college must withdraw any pending application to Harvard and are not eligible for admission.
Please be aware that Harvard, like most schools, uses outside companies to help process, review and collect data for applications. For this purpose we share application materials and information with them. Examples of such outside companies include the Common Application and Universal College Application, transcript request services, and services that review materials for plagiarism. These companies in many cases will retain the application information in their databases. We also share application information with our alumni interviewers.
