Outside Speaker Evaluation

By Alaa AlKaissi I attended a lecture about viruses at Amman Arab University on November 1, 2011. The speaker I observed was Dr. Firas fares who spoke to an audience of more than 25 students. The duration of his lecture was 45 minutes. Dr.Firas used a PowerPoint presentation to explain to us everything about viruses. First he introduce himself to us; he told us about his name, Certificates that he held and from which universities and his functional position at the university. After that, he define his public policy in his all lectures and how he used to deliver it; he has told us that he does not like the Lateral talk also he wish that the students shared with him their ideas, even if it was a joke they want to say it. Then he entered in the core of the subject, his presentation was nicely organized; At the beginning he provided an introduction to viruses and showed us what is the main topics that we will be going through by the outline, such as the virus definition and its causes and disadvantages and methods of prevention and he show us what we will be able to learn after this lecture. Then he starts the explanation, his vocal expressions changed according to what he was presenting. For example, when he would talk about problems or statistics, he made sure to emphasize what was important. Dr. Firas paused when he would finish explaining one point and continue with the next point of his speech. The rate of his speech was good. he did not go too fast which made it easier to understand what he was saying also he use enough visual aids to support his explanation such as photos ,emotions, and videos and it was easily readable by all the attenders.

As for answering the questions, he was answering all question's and giving concise and informative replies. Dr. Firas nonverbal language was good. He kept eye contact with the audience throughout the whole presentation. At some point he would keep eye contact with each individual. At the beginning of his speech he was standing in front of the room presenting his introduction and his thesis. Then moved to the left side of the room as he was moving along to different points of his speech. When he got to the middle of his speech, he started walking to the right side of the room. By the time he reached his conclusion, he had already moved to the middle of the room to finish his speech, also he was animating his hand to clarify the points. Lately he reached his conclusion that summarize main points and reinforce the subject and was Concise, easy and convenient. I was really impressed by the way Dr. Firas presented his lecture. His tone of voice and pitch were really good. He paused exactly at the right moment. I would like to add those three qualities to my future speeches.
