6.2.8.A.3.c Determine the foundational concepts and principles of Athenian democracy and the Roman Republic that later influenced the development of the United States Constitution. 6.2.8.B.3.a Determine how geography and the availability of natural resources influenced the development of the political, economic, and cultural systems of each of the classical civilizations and provided motivation for expansion. 6.2.8.D.3.d Compare the golden ages of Greece, Rome, India, and China, and justify major achievements that represent world legacies. 6.2.8.D.3.f Determine the extent to which religions, mythologies, and other belief systems shaped the values of classical societies.

E SSENTIAL Q UESTIONS :
1. What fields of study did the Greeks make lasting contributions to, and how do we see them in our everyday life?

O BJECTIVES :
1. Students will understand the lasting achievements of classical Greece which still affect everyday life. 2. Students will recall prior knowledge about ancient Greece. 3. Students will continue to effectively access and use their Google Docs accounts to complete notes. 4. Students will be able to access Wordle and create meaningful word art/text data to represent essential questions. 5. Students will use text data to reflect on concept of lasting contributions made by the Greeks.

A CTIVITIES :

Chapter 9 Section 4 Hook: How many people have already had math class today? Been to science? Gym? Why do we have different subjects in school? Why is it important to know the things we study? Where did these subjects come from? Among the major civilizations in the world, the Greeks were some of the first people to make lasting advances to fields of study such as the arts, math and sciences, and philosophy. What are some examples of Greek influences in our lives today? Brainstorm as a class. Keynote Slides : Have students share some of the answers from their lists. Using Smartboard and Keynote, move through slides that have some of the major contributions and a few examples. Did anyone mention statues and paintings? Architecture? Literature? Math? Medicine? Philosophy? What about from Chapter 8 (students will recall prior knowledge to answer)- Democracy? Mythology? Students can add more examples to each slide. Use about 10 minutes to move through the slides discussing the lasting contributions. Section Notes and Rereading the Text : Break the class into thirds. They will then sign out computers and locate the section notes from their Google Docs account. Out of the six groups in the classroom, two groups will work on the first part of Section 4, The Arts. Two groups will be working on Philosophy and the last two on Science and Math. The students will be responsible for presenting their part of the section notes to the class. Each group has the option of electing a spokesperson or taking turns to read the notes. They also have the choice of using their online textbook or the actual textbook. Presenting: As they are working in their groups (routinely), each group will be told which half of their portion they will be presenting. It breaks down to having about 1-2 sentences of the notes per student. Give students 15-20 minutes to complete the portion for which they are responsible. Depending on time, one portion of the notes may have to be presented during the next class. In that instance, we will review notes already presented, and then have the last groups up to the Smartboard to continue with their presentation.

Wordle : Students will access www.wordle.net. They will copy and paste their completed notes into the site and manipulate their wordle with their own creativity. Print to 6th Grade Color 1 printer. Once their work is retrieved, students will write: How does the wordle you created reflect the idea that Greeks made lasting contributions to society which we still see in our everyday life? Share with peers.

Formative (for Section): Group & Class Participation with Section Notes, Class Discussions, Observation. Employ visual aides and interactive SmartBoard strategies to reinforce understanding. Provide printed copies of handouts, notes/outlines, study guides, and completed notes when necessary. Modify assignments, packet material, and assessments as needed. Use an FM system when necessary. Give extra time when needed. Give oral descriptions when necessary. Implement multi/hypermedia to review concepts when appropriate. Give verbal and nonverbal cues when necessary. Give choices of utilizing technology or hard copy of materials.
