MAKERERE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY BIC II COURSE TEST

COURSE : ICH 2115 LECTURER : MR. M. MAWANGA DATE : DECEMBER, 2011

TIME : 2 HOURS INSTRUCTIONS : ATTEMPT ALL QUESTIONS

SECTION A 1. Which of the following best describes the physical model of a plug flow reactor? (a) Steady state operation, well mixed but with spatial variations in system variables. (b) Steady state operation, turbulent flow and system volume is the control volume. (c) Steady state operation, orderly flow and control volume is the differential element. (d) Unsteady state operation, well mixed but with spatial variations in system variables. (e) Its model is analogous to that of a CSTR. 2. The rate law for a reaction: (a) (b) (c) (d) Is a differential equation. Is valid in Uganda because the equator passes through Uganda. Is a function of temperature. Relates reaction rate and concentration of reacting species.

3. The elementary gas phase reaction 2A + B C takes place in a CSTR at a constant temperature of 500K and constant pressure of 16.4 atm. The feed is equimolar in A and B. What is the initial concentration of A fed to the reactor? m 3 atm (Use R 0.082 ) kmol.K (a) 0.2 mole/dm3 (c) 0.4 mole/dm3 (b) 0.0019 mole/dm3 (d) 8.2 mole/dm3

4. For the reaction A B , at a particular time t, the rate of formation of B in the reaction, rB, is 10 moles/dm3 minute. Which of the following is true? (a) Rate of disappearance of B is -10 moles/dm3 minute (b) Rate of formation A is -10 moles/dm3 minute. (c) rA= -10moles/dm3 minute (d) rB = -10 moles/dm3 minute (e) All the above (f) None of the above (g)

5. The units of the specific reaction rate constant for the reaction A + B C + D Were found to be dm9/mol3.S. If the reaction rate depends only on species A and B and is first order in A, what is the likely form of its rate law? (a) -rA = K CA C B 3 (b) -rA =KCA C B 3 (b) rA=KC2A C B 3 (c) rA=KCA (e) -rA=KCAC4B
SECTION B

6.

(a)

The gas-phase reaction 4 NH 3 5O2 4 NO 6 H 2 O is to be carried out isothermally. The molar feed is 50% NH3 and 50% O2 at a pressure of 16.4 atm and 227oC Construct a complete stoichiometric table. (i) (ii) What is the entering concentration of nitrogen, what are values of and used in your table? Suppose by chance the reaction is elementary with (iii) K NH 3 =40dm3/mol/s. Write the rate of reaction solely as a
function of conversion for a variable volume plug flow system.

(b)

The gas-phase reaction 2A +4B 2C which is first order in A and first order in B is to be carried out isothermally in a PFR. The entering volumetric flow rate is 2.5 dm3/minute and the feed is equimolar in A and B. The entering temperature and pressure are 727oC and 10 atm respectively. The specific reaction rate at this temperature is 4dm3/g.mol minute and the activation energy is 15,000 cal/g.mol (i) (ii) What is the rate of reaction at the entrance to the reactor? What is the value of the specific reaction rate constant at 1227oC?
