Experiment No. 3
1.0 TITLE :
To control the Speed Of D.C.Shunt Motor By Armature Voltage Control Method.

2.0

PRIOR CONCEPTS:
Working of d.c.motor & different types of d.c.motors. Connections of d.c. meters such as d.c.ammeter & d.c.voltmeter. How to handle tachometer for measurement of speed.

3.0

NEW CONCEPTS:
Proposition 1. For controlling the speed of d.c.shunt motor student should study the equation For speed of d.c.shunt motor and the parameters on which speed of d.c.shunt motor depends. The students should know different terms in the equation for speed of d.c.shunt motor ; N= (V-Ia*Ra)/; whereN = speed of motor ;V= applied voltage ; Ia = armature current and = field flux(field current). Concept structure:1

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
4.1 Intellectual skills : To understand the connection of the D.C.Shunt motor with 3 point starter. To control the speed of D.C.Shunt motor by varying armature circuit resistance. Motor skills: Ability to connect three point starter to start the motor. Ability to vary armature circuit resistance and measure variable speed and record the observations.

STEPWISE PROCEDURE:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Connect the motor with all meters and rheostats as per their polarities shown in figure. Keep both the rheostats in their initial positions. Switch on the D.C. supply by making ICDP switch on. Gradually rotate the handle of 3 point starter in clockwise direction to start the motor. Adjust the speed of D.C. Shunt motor to its rated speed by varying the field circuit resistance. Note down the initial voltage across the armature terminals and also speed of the motor. Start varying armature circuit resistance and note down corresponding speeds. Plot the graph of armature voltage on X - axis and speed on Y - axis.

10.0 CONCLUSION:
1. As the voltage across the armature of the motor -------------(increases/decreases) speed of the motor----------------- (increases/decreases). 2. Thus we can obtain speeds --------------(above/below) normal speed of the motor. Therefore this method can also be known as speed control of D.C.Shunt motor--------------(above/below) normal speed.

11.0 QUESTIONS:
1. 2. 3. 4. On which parameters speed of D.C. Shunt motor depends? Why speed control of D.C.Shunt motor using applied voltage control method can not be used in practice? Give reasons. State the law indicating the direction of rotation of D.C. motor? What is the use of resistance connected in series with the armature of motor in this experiment? Space For Answers
