ON SOCIAL SCIENCES
1.

1 A social science may be any discipline or branch of science that deals with the social and cultural aspects of human behaviour. 2 The social sciences include Advertising, Journalism, Political science, Public administration, and Public relations. In the later 20th century, 3 the term behavioural sciences has become more and more commonly used for the disciplines cited as social sciences. 4 Those who favour the term do so in part because these disciplines are thus brought closer to some of the sciences, such as 5 physical anthropology and linguistics, which also deal with human behaviour.

2.

1 Advertising is at times seen as the force of organised publicity intended to aid in the sale of a commodity or service. 2 Advertising aims to call attention to a commodity by making it conspicuous and by emphasising its agreeable qualities in order to arouse a desire in the consumer to purchase, use, or invest. 3 Journalism could be seen as a process of collecting, processing and spreading information. 4 This old field has recently seen the rise of a multitude of media such as magazines, TV and radio programmes, or the internet. 5 The responsibility of fair reporting lies with the journalists who require constant education and practice.

3.

1 Political science is sometimes understood to mean the systematic study of government processes by the application of scientific methods of analysis. More narrowly and traditionally, the field has been thought of as the study of the state and of the organs and institutions through which the state functions. 2 International relations is a branch of political science that is concerned with the relations between nations and with such nations' foreign policies. 3 Public administration might mean all the operations of government which seek to carry out and enforce public policy. 4 Public administration has also been identified as the branch of government which has direct contact with the people and as government in action. Its activities are varied and numerous: delivery of letters, licensing of a TV station, establishment of standards of purity for milk under pure food legislation, and the issuance of a court summons to a speeding motorist are examples of public administration. 5 Public relations can refer to an effort on the part of a person, group or organisation of any kind to influence the attitude of the public, or a portion thereof, toward the beneficiary of the public relations activity. In the business world, public relations, or PR as it is called, is a function of management, performed by specially trained employees, professional consultants in communications or both.
