Relations, Functions and Graphs

GENERAL OBJECTIVES On completion of this section, students should: 1. appreciate the importance of relations in Mathematics; 2. appreciate that many mathematical relations may be represented in symbolic form, tabular or pictorial form; 3. appreciate the usefulness of concepts in relations, functions and graphs to solvre real-world problems.
Specific Objectives: Objective

Content

Describe the Cartesian plane.

2. Plot points and draw diagrams on a Cartesian plane

3.

Explain concepts associated with relations;

X and y axes intercepting at right angles, four quadrants, scale, the origin as the point of reference, position of a point given as an ordered pair of coordinates Use of appropriate scale, interpreting the scale, coordinates of the points, joining points to form a figure, eg. triangle, quadrilateral Concept of a relation, types of relation, examples and nonexamples of relations, domain, range, image, co-domain. Set of ordered pairs, arrow (mapping) diagrams, table of values, graphically, algebraically. Concept of a function, examples and non-examples of functions. For example f: x x 2; or f(x)= x2 as well as y = f(x) for given domains. Ordered pairs, arrow diagram, graphically (vertical line test).

4.

Represent a relation in various ways;

5.

State the characteristics that define a function;

6. Use functional notation;

7. Distinguish between a relation and a function;

8. Recognize the general form of a linear equation 9. Draw and interpret graphs of linear functions; 10. Determine the intercepts of graphs of linear functions; 11. Determine the gradient of a straight line; 12. Determine the equation of a straight line;

Equation of a horizontal line, equation of an oblique line passing through the origin, equation of an oblique line not passing through the origin Concept of linear function, types of linear function ( y = mx + c; where m, c and k are real numbers) x-intercepts and y-intercepts, graphically and algebraically. Concept of a slope. The graph of the line. The co-ordinates of two points on the line. The gradient and one point on the line.

13. Solve problems involving the gradient of parallel and perpendicular lines; 15. Determine from co-ordinates on a line segment: (a) the length; (b) the co-ordinates of the midpoint;

The gradient on the line and its relationship to another line. The concept of magnitude or length, concept of midpoint.
