Out of all the countries I have visited in the past Vietnam has the most energy by far. Somehow the people are still able to have a relaxed attitude towards life in this electric environment. I love my food and I can tell you its hard to find a place that serves up a bad meal. The ongoing development makes for an exciting place to live and the cost of living in Vietnam makes for an awesome holiday destination for food lovers and shoppers. The diversity from the top to the bottom of the country allows for all types of holidays: far north for trekking, central for beach and the southern city for its shopping, museums and tourist attractions. I still love to get out and explore parts of Vietnam, Cambodia and Lao that I havent visited before and during busy times I still get the chance to run trips in all three countries. I have made Vietnam my second home for the past 11 years and I now have a family that will be doing the same. We all love to get back to visit family and friends in Australia and each time we pass comment that we are so lucky to have two homes that are so different to each other. Having based myself here in Hanoi, I often get asked the question by friends and family back in New Zealand, Why Vietnam?. Not an easy question to answer, so I usually reply Come and see for yourself. Now my family and friends make regular trips back to Vietnam. So much so Im beginning to suspect that its not actually to visit me! There is so much variety from place to place; whether your interests are in food, history, language, culture, scenery, shopping, or simply meeting some of the friendliest and most hospitable people on Earth. FACTS ABOUT VIETNAM
AREA 330,991 square kilometres POPULATION 85.7 million GEOGRAPHY Vietnam lies on the eastern seaboard of the Indochina peninsula, bording China to the north and Lao and Cambodia to the west. To the east and the south lies the South China Sea, which the Vietnamese call the East Sea. Mountains and hills cover four-fifths of Vietnams territory with the Truong Son range stretching over 1,400 km. Mount Fansipan (3,142 m) is the highest peak in Southeast Asia. The most populated areas in Vietnam are the Red River Delta and the Mekong Delta, which form around Vietnams two largest rivers. The Mekong is the 10th largest river in the world, at about 4,909 km in length. Vietnams 3,444 km coastline features beautiful beaches like Tra Co, Lang Co, Nha Trang, Vung Tau and Ha Tien. National parks include Ba Vi, Cat Ba and Cuc Phuong in the north, Bach Ma in the centre and Cat Tien in the south. HISTORY Vietnams history can be divided into six periods: - Prehistory: According to Vietnamese legend, Vietnamese history dates back over 4,000 years. In the third century BC, King An Duong named Vietnam Au Lac and ruled for fifty years. - Chinese Occupation: Vietnam was occupied by China from 111 BC to the early 10th century. - Monarchy: Local kings ruled the area from 939 to 1860 AD. - French Colonialism: French colonisation lasted until the 1945 revolution, when the Geneva Accords partitioned Vietnam in two. - American War: Vietnam battled America from 1959 until April 30, 1975. - Independence: From 1975 until now, Vietnam has been a free nation working towards development and success. RELIGIONS Major spiritual influences in Vietnam include Buddhism, Confucianism, and Ancestor Worship. Christianity arrived in the late 18th century and now has the second largest religious following, after Buddhism. Other religions practised include Islam and Cao Dai, with concentrations in the south.

SAPA For a fantastic cultural taste of Vietnam and an insight into some of Vietnams 54 minority tribes, Sapa is a must see. Markets are held most days in Sapa and here you will witness some of the many hilltribe people, clad in their traditional dress, living their daily life. The most vibrant markets are held at Bac Ha on Sunday and are dominated by the colourful Flower HMong and Phu Lu people. Walking in the picturesque mountains and visiting the local peoples villages is a wonderful experience. HANOI The Vietnamese capital has a distinct French feel to it, with its wide tree lined boulevards and ochre coloured buildings. Beautiful Hoan Kiem Lake dominates the centre of town. Most tourists love the Old Quarter, with its maze of ancient narrow streets and markets. In the old days, there were 36 streets with 36 wares, representing the number of crafts that were originally traded in the area. Other popular attractions include Ho Chi Minhs Mausoleum, One Pillar Pagoda, Hanois first university The Temple of Literature and the Water Puppet show.

HA GIANG One of the most untouched and stunning regions of Vietnam. Left in isolation and only recently opened for tourism Ha Giang has some of the most dramatic scenery that you will come across anywhere. Ha Giang Lao Cai Lai Chau HALONG BAY With its crystal clear waters and limestone karsts searching for the sky, Halong Bay is a picture postcard destination and a must for any complete visit to Vietnam. For a glimpse of this stunning area take the day tour from Hanoi and enjoy a four hour cruise with a fantastic seafood lunch. For a more in depth viewing, spend one or two nights on board a traditional junk cruising its tranquil waters and exploring the area fully. During the warmer months a swim in the World Heritage bay is a must.

CHINA BEACH Famous the world over thanks to the American TV series of the same name. Close to the city of Danang, China Beach stretches for many kilometres north and some 30km south of Som Tra, almost all the way to Hoi An.

HUE Vietnams third largest city was once its capital. The Citadel is Hues most famous attraction, which houses the Forbidden Purple City, once the Emperors private residence. A dragon boat cruise along the Perfume River, visiting Emperor Tu Ducs Tomb and Thien Mu Pagoda, is a great way to see the countryside, or for something different, cycle around this historical town.
CU CHI TUNNELS A short drive outside Ho Chi Minh City are the Cu Chi Tunnels, the former stronghold of the Vietnamese Army. There are around 250 kms of tunnels that stretch from the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City to the Cambodian border. The network, parts of which were several storeys deep, included innumerable trap doors, specially constructed living areas, weapons factories, field hospitals, command centres and kitchens.
MEKONG DELTA Often referred to as the lifeblood of Vietnam, the Mekong Delta is a fertile region where much of the countrys rice, sugar cane and fruit crops are grown. Most popular is a visit to the floating markets near Can Tho, where traders barter their produce from their boats. Floating down the many canals and waterways is a great way to experience life in the Mekong Delta.
DALAT The jewel of the Central Highlands; Dalat is a temperate region dotted with lakes, waterfalls, evergreen forests and gardens. It is also home to many Vietnamese artists and those of the avant-garde set, including the Mad Monk, Vien Thuc, who enjoy its year round mild climate. Other nearby attractions include Lat Village, Dambri Waterfall and a scenic train ride to Trai Mat.

Danang HOI AN Hoi An is often the highlight of any visit to Vietnam. This quaint fishing town has been occupied by the Chinese, Japanese, and Portuguese, which is reflected in its architecture. A walking tour around town is the best way to appreciate life in Hoi An. Visit its colourful markets or taste some of Vietnams best cuisine at a cooking class. Hoi An has become very well known for its tailors, who make excellent clothes at very reasonable prices.

PHU QUOC ISLAND For a tiny island Phu Quoc is steeped in history. During the French occupation, rubber and coconut plantations could be found and during the war it was home to 40,000 P.O.W. inmates. Phu Quoc has now been converted into an ideal tourist destination for nature and sea lovers and is an idyllic location to relax and enjoy a seaside holiday.

A cooking lesson is followed by lunch, during which the chef will taste and give a reward to the best dish. DAY 3 Hue Early morning flight to Hue and a short drive to your hotel. A tour of the city and surrounds gives you the opportunity to take in the main sights. Tonight you will not only learn how to cook the meal but also how to decorate dishes.
DAY 2 Hanoi A countryside bicycle tour, before an evening flight. Day rooms provided. DAY 3 Hue (30km) Our first day on the bikes. See the ancient Forbidden Palace, before riding on to the tomb of Emperor Tu Duc.
DAY 9 Cycling to Binh Duong (64km) Take a back road along the coast, passing beautiful secluded beaches. DAY 10 Cycling to Quy Nhon (85km) Todays ride includes a dramatic pass followed by the stunning Dai Lanh beach. Opportunity for a swim here. DAY 11 Quy Nhon Free day. DAY 12 HCMC After a short flight to Ho Chi Minh City, transfer to your centrally located hotel after which your leader will be able to give you suggestions on what to see and do. DAY 1 Hanoi Ninh Binh An early departure from Hanoi for the rural town of Ninh Binh. An hour out of town you start to cycle to Ninh Binh on country back roads. DAY 2 Ninh Binh This morning start to cycle ride to Tam Coc where you will take a boat to and through the caves, past spectacular cliffs, rural villages, and farming communities. DAY 3 Cuc Phuong National Park A 21km bicycle ride will take you through striking rural scenery to the village of Kenh Ga. Visit the Cave of Prehistoric Man where locals still pay homage to prehistoric artifacts that have been found in the cave. Visit the Primate Rescue Center before settling in for the night. Mui Ne Mui Ne means sheltered peninsula and is used as a seasonal harbour by fishermen. This area was previously occupied by the Cham civilization during the 8th centuries and is home to some of the oldest Cham relics in Vietnam. The area is located between mountains, rivers, sand dunes, and the ocean making it more than a seaside destination. Phu Quoc For a tiny island Phu Quoc is steeped in history. In the early 17th century, Vietnamese and Chinese immigrants earned their living from sea cucumbers. Later Phu Quoc became a stronghold of Lord Nguyen Anh, later Emperor Gia Long, in his confrontation with Tay Son forces. During the French occupation, rubber and coconut plantations could be found and during the war it was home to 40,000 P.O.W. inmates. Phu Quoc has now been converted into an ideal tourist destination for nature and sea lovers and is an idyllic location to relax and enjoy a seaside holiday.

DAY 1 Hanoi Mai Chau Departing Hanoi, you will be driven halfway to Mai Chau, before stopping in the city of Hoa Binh. There you board a small local motorised boat and navigate the Song Da Reservoir. You will pass Ba Khan Islands, described as Halong Bay on fresh water, a 3hr boat journey to Mai Chau. Observe rural lifestyle and traditional stilt houses. DAY 1 Hanoi Ninh Binh Depart Hanoi for the rural town of Ninh Binh which is the gateway for your exploration of Tam Coc and Hoa Lu. Take a boat to and through the caves, past spectacular cliffs, villages, and farming communities. This afternoon cycle (approx 24 km) through the country side of Hoa Lu, the former capital and soak up the friendly atmosphere of rural Vietnam. DAY 2 Cycling around Ninh Binh A 21km bicycle ride will take you through striking rural scenery to the village of Kenh Ga. Cambodia is once again at the top of travelers itineraries, the ideal destination for those seeking to explore the splendor of Asias past, present, and future. Today, the country is thriving in much-deserved peace, with the nations arts at the forefront of her cultural revival. GENERAL INFORMATION Cambodia is divided into 20 provinces and 4 municipalities, including the capital Phnom Penh. A province usually has the same name as its major town. The city of Phnom Penh consists of four urban districts and three outlying districts and has a population of over one million people. During the dry season, many thousands of people move into the city from the countryside to seek work. Cambodia is the most ethnically homogenous country in South-East Asia. Ethnic Khmer comprise 94 per cent of the population. The two main minority groups are ethnic Chinese (about 4 per cent) and the ethnic Vietnamese (about 1.1 per cent). The Chinese are primarily engaged in commerce, while the Vietnamese are mainly farmers, fishermen and semiskilled workers. Two Islamic communities in Cambodia, the Cham and Chvea, represent 3.4 to 5 per cent of the population. A number of indigenous hill tribes live in the remote north-east of Cambodia. Ninety per cent of Cambodians live in the central lowlands region. The official language of Cambodia is Khmer. English is the preferred second language, particularly among younger people. French is often spoken by the older generation of Cambodians. Cambodias population is predominantly Buddhist. Theravada Buddhism is a pervasive influence in Cambodian life and was reinstituted in 1989 as the state religion. Representatives of the Buddhist priesthood are on certain government bodies. Most villages have a wat (temple) and monks are a common sight around the country. Cambodia has a small Islamic community and a very small Christian community. Astrology is also widely practiced. VISA REQUIREMENTS & DEPARTURE TAXES Tourist visas for most nationalities can be obtained on arrival at Phnom Penh or Siem Reap airports for $20US cash. You will also need one passport photo. Departure tax is currently $25US MONEY The official unit of currency in Cambodia is the riel but United States dollars are accepted everywhere. CLIMATE Cambodias climate, like that of the rest of Southeast Asia is dominated by monsoons, which are known as tropical wet and dry because of the distinctly marked seasonal differences. Cambodia has a temperature range from 21 to 35 C (69.8 to 95 F) and experiences tropical monsoons. Southwest monsoons blow inland bringing moisture-laden winds from the Gulf of Thailand and Indian Ocean from May to October. The northeast monsoon ushers in the dry season, which lasts from November to March. The country experiences the heaviest precipitation from September to October with the driest period occurring from January to February. Cambodia has two distinct seasons. The rainy season, which runs from May to October, can see temperatures drop to 22 C (71.6 F) and is generally accompanied with high humidity. The dry season lasts from November to April when temperatures can rise up to 40 C (104 F) around April. HEALTH Travelers to Cambodia should take precautions as they would elsewhere. Lao awes travelers with the beauty of its countryside, the sound of monks chanting and ancient temples hidden amidst lush jungle. The United Nations has recently declared Luang Prabang, the ancient northern capital, a protected World Heritage Site. Lao is rich in its natural resources offering refreshing views of rich vegetation, monsoon forests and tropical fruit trees. The country is also home to rare species of snakes, birds, lizards, wild cattle, leopards, tigers and rhinos. GENERAL INFORMATION The capital and largest city of Laos is Vientiane and other major cities include Luang Prabang, Savannakhet and Pakxe. The Lao are very sociable and if you happen to be in the country during one of their festivals, you are sure to get caught up in the lively atmosphere! Pii Mai, Lao New Year, is in April and the celebrations include parades and water fights. The magnificent That Luang Festival falls in November and thousands of people and monks travel from remote villages to participate in the religious celebration. Several times a year Vientiane has boat racing competitions, where long wooden boats are raced up and down the Mekong River. Lao is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia and the thickly forested landscape consists mostly of rugged mountains, the highest of which is Phou Bia at 2,817 m, with some plains and plateaus. The Mekong River forms a large part of the western boundary with Thailand, whereas the mountains of the Annamite Chain form most of the eastern border with Vietnam. MONEY The official currency of Lao is the kip, however United States dollars and Thai baht are accepted almost everywhere. Hotels often change foreign currency cash, and sometimes travelers cheques. CLIMATE From November to February the weather in Laos is cool and dry while March to June sees temperatures soaring in to the high 30s (Celsius). There is a distinct rainy season from May to November, followed by a dry season from December to April. From July to October there tends to be even more rain, washing out some roads thus making rural areas inaccessible. Local tradition holds that there are three seasons (rainy, cold and hot) as the latter two months of the climatologically defined dry season are noticeably hotter than the earlier four months.

DAY 1 Arrival Day Arrival in Siem Reap. Join your group for a tour briefing. DAY 2 Siem Reap & the Temples of Angkor A day to explore the impressive remnants of the Angkor Empire, renowned for their superb temples and monuments. They are a UNESCO World Heritage site, the largest temple ruins on earth, and truly awe inspiring. See the restoration of some temples, and the disintegration of others, as the jungle reclaims them. The temples are best explored at dawn and dusk so in between are visits the Landmine Museum, Artisans DAngkor (silk weaving NGO), and the Angkor Childrens Hospital. DAY 3 & 4 Battambang Off to Battambang, a riverside town in Eastern Cambodia with some of the best preserved Frenchera architecture. You have a full day in Battambang to explore this lovely city, and the surrounding countryside. DAY 5 & 6 Ton Le Sap Biosphere Departing Battambang, you embark on Cambodias most spectacular boat journey, navigating narrow waterways and marshland, to arrive in the floating village of Prek Kanteal, in the heart of the Prek Toal Biosphere Reserve, a bird sanctuary. You will homestay in the very simple homes of families in the village which provides a unique insight into the lives of people living on the lake. At sunrise the next day boat into Prek Toal Core Area to observe some of Southeast Asias rarest birdlife. The nesting area in a flooded forest is spectacular in itself. Continuing by boat you arrive in Siem Reap for a late lunch followed by free time to explore the local markets. DAY 7 Phnom Penh A morning flight to Phnom Penh from Siem Reap. The actual name of what Westerns refer to as Bangkok is: Krung Thep Maha Nakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayutthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udom Ratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanu Kamprasit. Thailand fought a counter insurgency war against communist guerrillas in the 60s and 70s. Thailand is one of the few countries in the world that have conducted a successful campaign against a large-scale insurgency. It snowed in Thailand in 1955 (Christian calendar) in Chiang Rai province. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is the Englishborn, Oxford-educated 44-year-old leader of Thailands Democrat Party. In 1992, Mr. Abhisit joined Thailands oldest party, the Democrats and, at the age of 27, entered parliament as one of its youngest ever members. Having tried and failed to become party leader in 2001, he eventually got the post in 2005. Before the Thais the Mon ruled much of what is now Thailand. The Khmer also held large areas. The Mon had a large Buddhist empire and they had been trading with Indians for centuries when the Thai arrived. Before the Mon it is thought the Lawa people also had a large kingdom. Both the Mon and the Lawa continue to live in Thailand and Burma, but they are now small and poor minority groups. VISA REQUIREMENTS & DEPARTURE TAXES If you are planning a short holiday in Thailand you may not require a Thailand visa if you are citizen of one of the approximately 40 nations that qualify for a Thai visa waiver or Thai visa exemption. With evidence of onward/return travel, citizens of New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the USA, and most European nations may enter Thailand for up to 30 days without a Thai visa. These Thailand visa waivers are issued upon arrival in Thailand. Those entering Thailand by land may not receive a 30 day exemption however; the Thai visa waiver was reduced to 15 days MONEY Most foreign currency and travelers checks are cashed easily at hotels and tourist shops, as well as all provincial banks, shopping centers and money changers. Travelers checks are best changed in banks, which will often require your passport. Credit cards are widely accepted, though using a credit card may incur a usage fee of 2-3% Tipping is not a usual practice in Thailand, although it is becoming more common. Most hotels and restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill. At restaurants, Thais will often leave the coins as change, though its becoming more common to leave 20-100 baht (up to 10%) Visitors entering the kingdom on tourist visas are entitled to a refund of the 7% V.A.T. on goods purchased at registered retail outlets. To qualify for VAT refund a visitor must purchases must total at least 2,000 baht per store per day, with a total value of at least 5,000 baht. HEALTH & SAFETY Some people may worry about their health in Thailand or about Thailand safety, but Thailand is a very safe country, generally free of crime and most dangerous diseases. Regardless, travelers should take standard precautions. Avoid walking alone at night in remote areas and keep tabs on your valuables (such as your wallet or camera) when in crowded public areas. Some diseases that travelers may be exposed to, such as Dengue Fever, are mosquito borne and should be protected against with quality mosquito repellant. Minor stomach illnesses can be avoided by drinking bottled water and by eating made-to-order foods. Fortunately, if you need to go to a Thailand hospital, there are many hospitals with world class service around the kingdom, particularly in Bangkok. Furthermore, there are police stations and tourist police booths located in and around all major tourist areas and police are typically very helpful to foreigners.

BOOKING TERMS & CONDITIONS

The information in this brochure has been compiled with care and is provided in good faith. However it is subject to change, and does not form part of the contract between the client and Wide Eyed tours. The itinerary featured is correct at time of printing. It may differ slightly to the one in the brochure. Occasionally our itineraries change as we make improvements that stem from past travellers, comments and our own research. Sometimes it can be a small change like adding an extra meal. Sometimes the change may result in us altering the tour for the coming year. Ultimately, our goal is to provide you with the most rewarding experience. Please note that our brochure is usually released in November each year. If you have booked from the previous brochure you may find there have been some changes to the itinerary. DEPOSIT & BALANCE A non-refundable deposit of USD$250 per person is required upon confirmation of your booking. The balance is due 45 days prior to departure. If you fail to pay by the due date we reserve the right to cancel your booking and retain your deposit. If you make a booking less than 45 days prior to departure, full payment is due immediately. AMENDMENTS Up to 30 days prior to departure, three amendments per booking are permitted free of charge. For all subsequent changes there will be an amendment fee of USD$50 per change. CANCELLATION Cancellation fees apply to all cancelled reservations. The fee is determined by the date written cancellation is received by Wide Eyed Tours. CANCELLATION CHARGES ARE AS FOLLOWS: Days before departure: More than 45 days - Loss of deposit 45 or less days - 100% of total booking cost REFUNDS Refunds are not made for any unused services. No refund will be made if you leave the trip early for any reason. PASSPORT / VISAS All passengers must hold a valid passport and valid visa. It is your responsibility to obtain a current Vietnam visa. RESPONSIBILITY A very high level of care is taken to ensure suppliers maintain high standards. However, as we do not control the airlines, bus operators, or hotels we cannot be responsible in any way for problems resulting from the booking, unless it is a direct result of negligence on our part or the part of our employees. WIDE EYED TOURS act as agents only for the persons or companies providing or offering the means of travel, transport, accommodation or other services and all receipts, tickets, and vouchers are issued subject to the terms and conditions under which transportation and services are offered. THE TRAVELLER is fully aware that he/she is travelling in an area that may be remote, subject to unusual climatic conditions or politically unstable. Should Wide Eyed Tours deem it advisable to amend an itinerary, it may do so by varying or completely rerouting any trip. In this case the traveller will make no objection or claim for compensation from Wide Eyed Tours. Compensation should be made through your insurance company. Refunds will be at the total discretion of Wide Eyed Tours. WIDE EYED TOURS will do everything it can to ensure your tour departs on time. However, Wide Eyed Tours reserves the right to cancel any tour 10 days prior to departure should the group size fall below the minimum numbers required. Alternative dates will be made available. Should this option be unacceptable, a full refund of all payments will constitute full settlement with the passenger. WIDE EYED TOURS reserves the right to decline, accept, or retain any person as a member of any party at any time. Travellers agree to accept the authority of the group leader. Wide Eyed Tours will not accept responsibility or liability for any traveller who contravenes any laws or regulations of Vietnam, Cambodia, or Lao. All employees of Wide Eyed Tours are bound by these conditions. PRIVACY WIDE EYED TOURS respects your privacy and abides by the terms of the Privacy Amendment Act 2000. We will only collect personal information that is relevant to your travel arrangements. We will protect the privacy of the information you provide us and only pass it to third parties such as airlines, tour companies, hotels or insurance providers when that information is necessary to fulfill your travel arrangements. BASIC INFORMATION
WHAT TO TAKE What you need to bring will vary according to the trip style you have chosen, and when you are travelling. Generally speaking though, you should pack as lightly as possible. There may be instances where you will have to carry your own luggage, and though you will not be required to walk long distances, we recommend keeping the weight light. Suitcases are not recommended. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags with wheels are acceptable, although we recommend your bag has carry straps as well, as you may be required to negotiate bus and railway station steps. You will also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for day walks and day trips. MEALS While travelling with us you will experience the vast array of wonderful food available in the region. Generally, to give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat, not all meals are included in the trip price. This also gives you more budgeting flexibility. As a rule our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each others company. There is no obligation to do this though. Your group leader will be able to suggest favourite restaurants during your trip. Please check the itinerary for details of meals in-cluded. Breakfast is included in all hotels where you have stayed the previous night. SINGLE TRAVELLERS Our group trips are designed for shared accommodation. Single travellers are paired in twin share accommodation with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip. (Pre- and post-trip accommodation will be booked on a single room basis.) If we are unable to find you a roommate you will have your own room. If you are single and would like the guarantee of a single room you will be required to pay the single supplement. IMPORTANT NOTES During the months of May to November areas of the region are prone to heavy rains. While we continue to run successful trips during this period, please note that our itineraries are subject to change as the conditions require. TRAVEL INSURANCE Travel insurance is compulsory for all our trips. We require that, at a minimum, you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage, personal effects and repatriation. When travelling on a group trip, you will not be permitted to join the tour until evidence of travel insurance has been sighted by your leader. If you have credit card insurance your tour leader will require proof of purchase (a receipt or credit card statement) with a credit card in your name. Contact your bank for details of their participating insurer, the level of coverage and emergency contact telephone number. VISAS It is the responsibility of the individual traveller to ensure all visa and entry requirements are met prior to arrival.. The visa requirements for your trip vary depending on where you are from and where you are going. We keep the brochure information up to date as much as possible, but rules do change. It is important that you check for yourself. It is your responsibility to arrange visas before you travel. Your travel agent can assist. Below are the visa requirements for Vietnam, at the time of printing. A visa is required for all nationalities. Please obtain a visa before arriving in Vietnam. You should allow 3 weeks for processing. Remember to keep the customs and immigration form you receive on arrival, as you need it to complete exit formalities. See the Lao / Cambodia pages for information about visas for these countries. MONEY EXCHANGE Currency exchange rates often fluctuate. For the most up to date rates please refer to the following website: www.xe.com. US currency (cash or travellers cheques) is the most convenient to carry when travelling in the region. However it can be difficult to change travellers cheques outside the big cities. Cash in US dollars can be used to directly purchase goods and services along with the local currencies, Vietnamese Dong, Laos Kip, Thai Baht and Cambodian Riel (although the latter is in limited use). Other major international currencies may be exchanged in the main cities, where Visa and MasterCard may also be used for cash advances. ATMs are available in most large towns and the hotels we use offer exchange services at a reasonable rate. It is not possible to exchange local currencies outside the countries so convert or spend it all before leaving. Black markets are reemerging but are considered a danger and best avoided. SPENDING MONEY Every traveller is different and therefore spending money requirements will vary. Some travellers may drink more than others, while other travellers like to purchase more souvenirs than most. Please consider your own spending habits when it comes to allowing for drinks, shopping and tipping. Please also remember that Vietnam, Cambodia, Lao and Thailand have a culture that is used to negotiating. Expect to negotiate for most items. TIPPING GUIDE For your leader we recommend $3 USD a day. For drivers and local guides we recommend $2 USD a day. COMMUNICATION WHILE AWAY If you need to be contacted while travelling we recommend that you set up an email address. Email has quickly become the preferred way for our leaders and travellers to stay in touch and email cafes are commonplace throughout the regions we visit. If someone wishes to contact you in an emergency while you are on one of our trips we recommend that they contact your local booking agent, or refer to our Emergency Contact. We dont recommend that family and friends try to contact you through hotels, as they are subject to change, and the reception staff may not speak English. Please note that mobile phones on a GSM or Global Roam network may not work in some rural areas. YOUR FELLOW TRAVELLERS As you travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of travelling in a group. Your fellow travellers will probably come from all corners of the world and a range of age groups too. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the benefit of everyones travel experience. Remember too that you have responsibilities to the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, ensure that you dont keep the rest of the group waiting. We have found time and time again that the very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well this takes just a little effort on your part. LAUNDRY Facilities are offered by most hotels for a fee. There will be times when you may want to or have to do your own laundry so we suggest you bring non-polluting/biodegradable soap. LOCAL DRESS When packing be aware that dress standards are conservative throughout this region. Loose, lightweight, long clothing is both respectful and cool in the predominantly hot Asian climate. In winter months the extra length will keep you warm! Generally speaking, neat and tidy clothing is appreciated. Shorts should be knee length and singlets/tank tops are not recommended. RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL We believe strongly in low impact or rather positive impact tourism. Broadly speaking this means that we try to minimise the negative aspects of tourism on the local cultures and environments that we visit and highlight the positive aspects. TRAVELLING WITH WIDE EYED TOURS RULES Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on our trips. Possessing or using drugs not only contravenes the laws of the land but also puts the rest of the group at risk. Smoking marijuana and opium is a part of local culture in some parts of the world but is not acceptable for Wide Eyed Tours travellers. Wide Eyed Tours philosophy of travel is one of respect towards everyone we encounter, and in particular the local people who make our destinations such special places. The exploitation of prostitutes is completely contrary to this philosophy. Our group leader has the right to expel any member of the group if drugs are found in their possession or if they use prostitutes. TRANSPORTATION We take the hassle out of your travel, for most set depature tours, arrival and departure transfers are included. We also ensure that transport for all group activities and meals is taken care of on all our tours.
