Smart Grid Implementation in India Smart Grid refers to an improved electricity supply chain that runs from a major power plant all the way inside your home. In short, there are thousands of power plants throughout the country that generate electricity using wind energy, nuclear energy, coal, hydro, natural gas, and a variety of other resources. The basic concept of Smart Grid is to add monitoring, analysis, control, and communication capabilities to the national electrical delivery system to maximize the throughput of the system while reducing the energy consumption. The Smart Grid will allow utilities to move electricity around the system as efficiently and economically as possible. It will also allow the homeowner and business to use electricity as economically as possible. Smart Grid builds on many of the technologies already used by electric utilities but adds communication and control capabilities that will optimize the operation of the entire electrical grid. Smart Grid is also positioned to take advantage of new technologies, such as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, various forms of distributed generation, solar energy, smart metering, lighting management systems, distribution automation, and many more.

Smart grid Implementation in India means: Access to Electricity for All Reduction of AT&C losses to below 15% in all Utilities Reduction in Power Cuts Improvement in Power Quality Reduction of T&D losses to below 10% in all Utilities Efficient forecasting and dispatching of Renewables Renewables Integration

Standards for Smart Appliances : Smart Meters etc Stable back-bone of 765kV system in operation 1200kV AC system in operation Increase in inter-regional power exchange capacity Wide Area Monitoring Efficient Power Exchanges Training and Capacity building in Utilities and in the Industry to build, operate and maintain SG systems and applications

Smart Utilities managing other pieces of vital infrastructure sectors such as Water and Gas distribution, Surface Transport etc

Electrify almost all economic activities including transport and much of agricultural processes; and de-carbonize the power sector through dramatic increase in renewables and nuclear and carbon capture and storage technologies

Financially viable utilities Stable 24x7 power supply to all categories of consumers all across the country 33% or more Renewables in the power system IT network and CRM systems of Electric Utilities being leveraged to other service providers water and gas distribution, land revenue collection etc

Standards for inter-operability, cyber security Standards for Smart Infrastructures Buildings, Roads, Parking Lots, Malls, Industries etc

Mandatory

standards for Appliances DR(Disaster recovery) readiness, energy

efficiency and emissions

The above mentioned points are the challenges that needs to be addressed while implementation of Smart grid in Indian scenario.
