Reflections on the Leadership Wilson Class

In September, 32 strangers gathered in front of College Hills Church and piled into a bus headed for Monteagle. Fast forward to May, and thirty one people gave tearful testimony of being strongly affected by someone in the class for the better. The transition from stranger to supporter occurred while learning about the amazing community of Wilson County. Leadership Wilson taught me the importance of shopping local and being actively involved in my community through volunteering. It showed me how local and state government worked and how to get involved to make a difference while encouraging me to network with other professionals in my community. The experience of being a part of the Best Class Ever schooled me in local agriculture, business, government, lifestyles, education, and social services available to those in Wilson County. But above all else, it gave me 31 people I can call on, both professionally and personally, to support me. Leadership Wilson is a highly rewarding experience that I am so thankful to have been, and will continue to be, a part of. It encouraged me personally to join the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce and volunteer my time to Charis Health Center. It taught me about the good works of the Brooks House. It showed me the best place to buy custom perfume by introducing me to Heavens Scent on the Lebanon Square. Leadership Wilson taught me what each of my City Council members looked like, by encouraging me to attend a City Council meeting. To explain the experience of Leadership Wilson and the impact it has had on me is a difficult task. I suggest you apply for next years class and see what it does yourself.

Congratulations to Greg Butler and the Leadership Wilson Class of 2012!

A successful project!
The 2012 Leadership Wilson Class along with the TN. Department of Health, and Wilson County Sports Council, hosted an event together in all 3 Wilson Co. cities on March 3. The events were held in the following locations Three Forks Park , Watertown, from 9a-11a Don Fox Park, Lebanon, from 9a-11a Charlie Daniels Park, Mount Juliet 2p-4p Activities at the events included one mile Fun Runs, health booths, activities, rock climbing walls, colon cancer screening kits, Zumba, Kickboxing, and boot camp demos, gardening demos, and more. This was an initiative to get Wilson County to get up and move. By having an event in Mount Juliet, Lebanon, and Watertown on the same day it encouraged the entire county to move at once! Not only was this a healthy day for Wilson County but it also was a kick-off event for a Wilson County Schools competition. They have been encouraged to participate in many events beginning with ours and ending with Go Johnny Go 5K in May. Throughout this time they accumulate points. The school with the most points over that time period will receive grant monies for their schools Physical Education Department. This will become an annual event that we hope will continue for years to come. Watertown Team: Jeff Brown, Jeff Luttrell, Philip Clemmons, Kristina McKee, Diane Weathers, and David Pierce Lebanon Team: Jamie Wood, Lori Barry, Joe Goode, Kristi Chaffin, Matt Ryan, and Clark Boyd. Get Fit Wilson! Health Fairs objective was to focus on health, exercise and nutrition and was sponsored by 25 Wilson County healthcare and healthy lifestyle service providers. The participants and exhibitors offered an abundance of free gifts and information for attendees as well as free massages and health screenings, including blood pressure, vision and glaucoma tests. Attendance was estimated at 120. The American Red Cross was on hand for a blood drive that garnered 38 productive units, a fantastic result according to a Red Cross representative. Proceeds of the fair benefited Charis Health Center of Mt. Juliet, who provide primary health care for working uninsured residents of Wilson County. Youth Leadership Wilson members were present to lead various fun exercises and a Zumba fitness dance session was fun for all participants. The fair was held on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at Mt. Juliet Middle School.

Leadership Wilson Is Running for Healthy Living
Phil Carter, Joe Ali, Teddy Stewart, Kerry Becht, Jeanetta Watson, Kristina Hibdon, Bob Gash
Get Fit Wilson! is an effort to promote fitness and living healthy in Wilson County. As a way to kick-off a healthy culture in the community, members of the Leadership Wilson Class of 2012 decided to make an attempt at breaking a world record for the most people running the 100-meter relay in one hour. The record is currently held by the Bank of Scotland (UK), which had 191 participants during the Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland, on June 7, 2011. To beat the record, the schools only needed to surpass the current record by a single participant. The group approached the administration of Wilson County Public Schools with the concept and hoping to make them a partner in the endeavor. In the end, students from Mt. Juliet, Wilson Central, Lebanon and Watertown high schools participated in the event and each sharing a piece of a world record. Mt. Juliet surpassed the record only to have their record beat by Wilson Central. Lebanon and Watertown High Schools were ready to go even further. With 19 seconds remaining on the clock, Isaac Keigwin handed the baton to Carlee Clark, making her the last runner under official time. Once her leg of the race was complete, Lebanon and Watertown students surpassed Wilson Central and Mt. Juliets attempt at securing a world record. Lebanon and Watertown High Schools will now share a part of history as having a record number of people, 252, running 100 meters in a one-hour relay.

Joe Ali, proud supporter of Leadership Wilson, wants to congratulate his classmates of 2012.

Youth Leadership Wilson Reflections

If I was to describe to you what Youth Leadership Wilson is all about I could do it in one word: Opportunity. YLW was one of, if not the greatest program I have ever had the chance to be apart of. Five 11th grade students from every high school, public or private, in Wilson County, were put into a program which was presented very vaguely and mysteriously to all of us. None of us really had a clue as to what was in store and even the ones that might have known a little bit truly didnt know because they hadnt experienced it yet. The first day we got there we were forced to meet all the others that were in the same boat as us. We needed to pick somebody that we didnt know, learn about their lives, and then stand in front of the group and tell what we knew. It was a great day to learn and get used to each other which we would need to do for the coming events. Behind the whole program was Mrs. Dorie Mitchell. Mrs. Mitchell is an outgoing and wonderful lady that is perfect in a leadership role. If someone has ever met her most likely theyll remember her. Mrs. Mitchell is the brain, heart, and soul of YLW and she is what makes it kick. On the first day she taught us the three real objectives of YLW: 1. Have Fun, 2. Eat Well (Which we always did) and 3. Learn a little something along the way. For the rest of the school year once a month we would meet up and go out and do something that no other person let alone high school student ever got to do. If I had to choose certain events that were my favorites itd be Education Day and State Government Day. On Education day we were able to go as a group and tour each others school. Mrs. Mitchell had told us that we were going to be the tour guides. We were able to tour Lebanon High, Mount Juliet High, Wilson Central, MJCA, Friendship, and Watertown. This was a fun day for all of us because even though we lived down the road from each other most of us had never seen the other high schools. Additionally, it was a very eye opening experience because all the high schools are different and we got to walk in someone elses shoes. On State Government day we got to join up with the Adult Leadership Wilson class and go to the Capitol downtown. We all met at the train station, hopped on the Star and began the day. Once we got there we were able to meet with Congressmen and Congresswomen and take pictures. I personally love Politics and this was something that tickled me pink. We were able to sit in a Committee room, go to the Arcade downtown, and then we were able to do a mock session in the House Chamber. Representative Mark Pody, Representative Linda Elam, and Senator Mae Beavers all met and talked with us which was also cool to meet our leaders in the community. Even though these are my favorite events I loved each one in its own way. Not many people can say they have toured a sewage treatment plant, visit The World Headquarters of Cracker Barrel, eat lunch with a professional that is in the field we want to study, meet a Judge in his court room, ring bells at Wal-Mart, help the elderly at retirement homes, take a tour of a hospital, meet all our mayors, go through a DUI simulation, and Tour the county jail on the inside and out.
