Aim
The main aim of this course is to give students a broad grounding in issue surrounding multimedia, including the role of and design of Multimedia Systems which incorporate digital audio, graphics and video, underlying concepts and representations of sound, pictures and video, data compression and transmission, integration of media, multimedia authoring, and delivery of multimedia.

Objectives of the course


Students should be able to:

Understand the relevance and underlying infrastructure of the multimedia systems. Understand core multimedia technologies and standards (Digital Audio, Graphics, Video, VR, data transmission/compression) Be aware of factors involved in multimedia systems performance, integration and evaluation Come up with a multimedia project that includes most of multimedia technologies

Syllabus Outline
Topics in the course include the following: Multimedia Design 1. Introduction: Multimedia applications and requirements e.g. overview of multimedia systems, video-ondemand, interactive television, video conferencing, hypermedia courseware, groupware, World Wide Web, and digital libraries. Multimedia essentials: Multimedia production, design and Application navigational structures Opportunities in Multimedia Production: MM Jobs and Development team MM Technology possibilities: Marketing and advertising, programme development training presentation, sports, educational MM programs, Training programs, Edutainment, Games, Magazines, Newspapers 2. MM Structure and Organization: Design strategies: Media combination, Graphics, Backgrounds, 3-D graphics, Charts, Clip arts, Buttons, Audio/Video fundamentals including analog and digital representations, human perception, and audio/video equipment, applications. Audio and video compression including perceptual transform coders for images/video, scalable coders and perceptual audio encoders. Application and performance comparison of various coding algorithms including hardware/software trade-offs. Image and video

processing applications and algorithms. Multimedia Programming Frameworks: Java for QuickTime, Java Media Framework 3. MM Presentation building blocks: Text Graphics Charts Maps

Assessment
The assessment for this course will include assignments and tests. They contribute 30% of the final mark. A three hour examination will contribute the other 70% of the final mark.
