a chemical reaction converts the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapour. The technology is both simple and dependable and makes it possible to meet both current and forthcoming emissions requirements. The Volvo 7700 is certified for Euro 4 and is also available in a version that meets Euro 5 emission levels (incentive).
The Volvo D9B is an environmentally optimised engine. It has been developed from the ground up for extremely low particulate emissions. In order to also reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides, the Volvo 7700 is equipped with a system for after-treatment of exhaust gases. It is known as SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction). In this system, a mixture of ammonia and water known as AdBlue is injected into the exhaust gases. As they pass through the catalytic converter,

The Volvo D9B is available with 260, 310 and 360 hp and offers high torque across a wide rev range.
The Volvo D9B is an in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 9.4 litres. It features a single cylinder head, overhead camshaft, 4 valves per cylinder and unit injectors.
AdBlue is stored in a separate tank normally mounted on the same side as the fuel tank.
In the exhaust after-treatment process, a mixture of ammonia and water known as AdBlue is injected into the exhaust gases. As they pass through the catalytic converter, a chemical reaction converts the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapour.
A new hydraulic fan system provides extremely effective cooling. Its installation on the roof ensures minimal dirt accumulation.
Highlights | Volvo D9B Advanced casting techniques and a lightweight, compact timing mechanism result in low engine weight in relation to power output. The D9B is a reliable engine with few and robust components. For example, the cylinder block and cylinder head are made of cast iron. The crankshaft and camshaft are induction-hardened. Four valves per cylinder mean fast gas flow and optimum combustion. The engine control unit precisely matches fuel quantity and injection timing to engine requirements. Centrally positioned vertical unit injectors ensure that injection takes place under high pressure and with immense precision. A newly developed rooof mounted cooling system ensures exceptionally effective engine cooling. The new lubrication system sees to it that the oil is distributed properly to all the lubrication points. Solid aluminium pistons are effectively cooled by oil that is sprayed in under the piston crowns. The highly efficient turbo engine has a broad operational range and contributes to the high torque.
The natural gas and biogas versions of the Volvo 7700 are powered by the Volvo G9A engine. Based on Volvos latest 9-litre diesel, the Volvo G9A has been optimised in detail for gas power. Unlike our previous gas-powered engines, the Volvo G9A is a so-called Lambda 1 or stoechiometric engine. This means that the blend of air and fuel is constantly regulated to correspond to the engines requirements at any given moment in time. This solution makes it possible to treat the exhaust gases with a three-way catalytic converter, which means that emissions are lowered to levels that are way below current and forthcoming legislated requirements. The Volvo G9A has been developed to meet the EEV* emission levels and to halve the particulate emissions of a Euro 4 diesel engine. The nitrogen oxide content of the exhaust gases is just one-tenth the limit specified according to Euro 4.
Same power output irrespective of fuel quality
The Volvo G9A is available with a choice of two power outputs, 260 and 300 hp. Maximum torque in the more powerful version is 1400 Nm, and this is available across a very wide rev range. This means that the engine responds instantly to the accelerator and offers you immense power whenever you need it.
Certified installation
The gas-powered versions of the Volvo 7700 are certified according to the ECE 110 R European standard.
Natural-gas buses already back in 1992
Volvo Buses is one of Europes leading manufacturers of buses for natural gas and biogas, and has delivered more than 1000 vehicles since start of production in 1992.
The engine management system automatically modifies combustion to suit fuel quality. As a result, the engines performance is not affected by the quality of the gas.
* EEV stands for Environment Enhanced Vehicles and it is the EUs special emissions class for environmentally optimised vehicles.
