ABSTRACT Generally wind energy systems can convert the kinetic energy to more useful forms of power. Wind blades transform the energy in the wind into mechanical power, which can then be used to generate electricity and it can be used to charge large batteries. But for initial stage we have tried it in miniature level of charging a 12v lead acid battery since it is easily available to us. So This paper deals with implementation of wind driven generator technology to produce electricity in charging of mobile phone in two wheeler. We are generating electrical energy with help of wind energy when the vehicle is running. The generated electrical energy will be stored in the lead acid battery which can be used for charging purpose.

Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION
With the population explosion, exploitation of natural resources is heading towards its peak. Some projections indicate that the global energy demand will almost triple by 2050 and oil can only supply the world for up to 150 years. Keeping these facts in mind, science has started emphasising upon sustainable development and has come up with advanced methods of energy conservation. We have developed different technologies for utilization of renewable resources of energy and these technologies are also being implemented in almost all sectors. Whether it is power generation by hydro projects or use of large scale solar panels, these technologies are being used at an extensive scale.

WIND ENERGY
Wind energy is the kinetic energy associated with the movement of atmospheric air. It has been used for hundreds of years for sailing and for irrigation. Wind energy systems convert this kinetic energy to more useful forms of power. Wind blades transform the energy in the wind

into mechanical power, which can then be used directly for sailing etc. or further converting to electric power to generate electricity. Small wind turbines called aero-generators can be used to charge large batteries. Five nations Germany, USA, Denmark, Spain and India account for 80% of the worlds installed wind energy capacity. Wind energy continues to be the fastest growing renewable energy source with worldwide wind power installed capacity reaching 14,000 MW.Realizing the growing importance of wind energy, manufacturers have steadily been increasing the unit size of the wind electric generators since the late 1980s. DC GENERATOR An electrical Generator is a machine which converts mechanical energy (or power) into electrical energy (or power).

Principle of DC GENERATOR:
It is based on the principle of production of dynamically (or motionally) induced e.m.f (Electromotive Force). Whenever a conductor cuts magnetic flux, dynamically induced e.m.f. is
8

produced in it according to Faraday's Laws of Electromagnetic Induction. This e.m.f. causes a current to flow if the conductor circuit is closed.

Hence, the basic essential parts of an electric generator are : 1)A magnetic field and 2)A conductor or conductors which can so move as to cut the flux. Construction : A single-turn rectangular copper coil abcd moving about its own axis in a magnetic field provided by either permanent magnets or electromagnets. The two ends of the coil are joined to two split-rings which are insulated from each other and from the central shaft. Two collecting brushes (of carbon or copper) press against the slip rings.

EXPERIMENTAL SETUP: The generator coupled with the fan is fixed in the front of vehicle and allowed to rotate freely in the atmospheric air to get the electric charge for mobile phone charging purpose.

Chapter 3 ANALYSIS OF FAN (USING CATIA SOFTWARE) WHY PLASTIC FAN? There are some reasons to chosen the plastic fan. They are following, Less weight Can produce more rotations Can produce high mechanical energy Easily available.

The different views of the fan with the above dimensions are,

13

The properties of the fan used are shown below,

So due to the above properties, the fan can withstand for long time.

14

Chapter 4 WORKING:
Since the required properties for the rotation has obtained in the above fan it is finalized and used in our project. Here in our project we used TVS XL HEAVY DUTY vehicle for testing. 1.The generator coupled with the fan is fixed in the front side of the vehicle (below the head light) 2.Then it is connected with the battery (lead acid battery) and dc charger. 3.As the dc charger having the capacity to convert 6/12 v to 4v (required for charge the mobile phone) it is used here. 4.So then the dc charger output is given as input to the mobile phone to charge it. 5.The charging will start when the vehicle reaches the speed of 30km/hr. 6.Before reaches the above speed it will produce some electric charge and stored in the battery.

CIRCUIT DIAGRAM The general circuit diagram of this project is,

ACTUAL SETUP

The following figure is the actual setup of the above working,

Where, 1 - it is the place where the generator setup is placed 2 - it is the place where battery is kept.

16

Chapter 5 RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS: By the above method it produced the current required for charge the mobile phone. If it reaches the maximum speed also it will produce charge up to its maximum. since that vehicle used is 67cc we planned to use this method in some other vehicles which having higher capacity than this. The following results were obtained while checking with the 12v Dc Generator.

Battery Efficiency
Lead acid batteries typically have coulombic efficiencies of 85% and energy efficiencies in the order of 70%.

Battery stand by time

Since Lead acid batteries having the above efficiencies it dissipates very negligible amount of charge only if we dont use it for some days .

18

Chapter 6

TASKS OVERCOME: First we checked how much voltage is generating for different speeds in the vehicle. While checking that with 12v dc generator it produced the minimum voltage of 2.5v for 10km/hr and maximum voltage of 8.9v for 60 km/hr. After then we fixed the setup in back of the vehicle (below the danger light) there it is not efficient (i.e the air required for rotation of fan is very low) So again we changed the location to front side of the vehicle. In front side the above observations were obtained. Then the fan with two blades are coupled with generator and tested After then, for getting more number of rotations of fan we changed the fan with three blades. Its efficiency is more compared to the two blade fan since its self weight is more.

Chapter 7
Conclusions: In this mini project electricity is produced from wind energy. By using this we can charge the mobile in two wheeler while riding. In this project we made use of generator coupled with the blades of fan in order to produce electricity. If the vehicle is running at the speed up to the maximum of 60 km/hr it is producing electric charge of (8-9)v. so it is an additional energy producing system for a two wheeler. We can use the charge produced from this system for some other purposes (head light, indicators, horn, etc.,). This method is very simple and compact in size. Therefore it is appropriate for the vehicles which are less than 100 cc.

21

Chapter 8 Future scope of this project:

In future, This project will be implement in the bikes which is more than 100cc by using the high voltage generators (120v, 230v, etc.,) and some recent techniques. In future, by this technique the power produced from that may be used to run the electric bike is also possible. In future the blades in the fan will be increased in numbers to get more power will be tested.
