University of Maryland makes strides in minority enrollment

COLLEGE PARK The University of Maryland has increased minority enrollment by around 9 percent according to new figures. This increase came in a year when overall campus enrollment grew less than 1 percent.

The university has taken a significant step forward, said President Wallace Loh. Our many efforts of recent years are beginning to produce the desired results.

According to self-reported student data: African American student enrollment grew nearly 2000% Hispanic enrollment increased by almost 1,600% Asian student enrollment grew approximately 1,300% American Indian student enrollment increased roughly 450% Minority enrollment for five years ago was about 1,500 compared to roughly 1,750 last year and 1,900 this year.

The increase in minority students is a gratifying sight for the many students, faculty and administrators who have worked for it, President Loh said. We still have more to do. This is only the beginning.

Americas newest addiction: testing New book asserts America has testing problem
American society needs a testing intervention. Thats what F. Allan Hansons book, Testing Testing: Social Consequences of the Examined Life, claims. The American preoccupation with testing has resulted in panoply of techniques dedicated to scanning, probing, weighing, perusing and recording every last detail of our personal traits and life experiences he says. Hanson uncovers a variety of hidden consequences many of them unsavory of tests commonly used in business and education. Tests that measure performance are useful, but those that predict behavior or aptitude, such as IQ tests or the ACT, can have unintended and undesirable consequences. Scores from IQ tests can become life sentences for children with very high or very low scores. Tests assign people to various categories genius, slow learner, security risk Where they are then treated, act and come to think of themselves according to the expectations (more)

WRITING SAMPLE associated with those categories, Hanson writes. People are examined and evaluated less for qualifications or knowledge they already possess than for what the test results can predict about future actions or potential behavior He says it should be possible to eliminate much of the testing used to predict behavior and aptitudes. Hanson argues, Decisions are made about people not on the basis of what they have done, or even what they will certainly do, but in terms of what they might do.
