IT Key Metrics Data 2012: Unix Server Summary Report Looking Ahead
The measures that follow highlight key cost and staff measures around IT infrastructure and operations. The measures explored should help to identify overall trends, although individual variations from these trends may be justified by specific business needs, as well as differences due to size and complexity of an organizations environment.

Unix Server Analysis Framework

The scope of the Unix environment analysis includes Unix Servers running: Unix AIX, DEC, HP, Linux, SCO, SGI-Cray and Sun. Unix costs include annual operational expense, lease, depreciation, maintenance, installation and taxes, as appropriate, for all hardware, software, connectivity, disaster recovery, occupancy, and personnel to support the environment as defined below in Nonpersonnel Costs and Personnel Costs/FTEs.

Non-personnel Costs
Non-personnel costs include in-house related costs as well as fees for third party and outsource contracts. Hardware is defined as: Processing Devices: Includes all hardware in server platform configurations, including internal disk storage (but NOT external disk arrays), processors, memory, cards, etc. Client Devices: This include the equipment used by the operations staff to support the environment (e.g., desktops, laptops, PDAs). However, this EXCLUDES all devices associated with storage, backup and retrieval of data.

Software is defined as: Annual costs of for software related to host and virtual OS licenses, virtualization and partitioning software, non-storage utilities, databases, middleware, content/document management search engines, messaging, communications (TCP/IP, FTP and host based), and server security.

Connectivity is defined as: Intra-Data Center Connectivity: This typically includes: routers, switches, load balancers, controllers and appliances. Data center communication networks are dedicated networks that are segregated or isolated from the general purpose LocalArea Data Networks (LAN), Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) or WAN. General purpose or shared network cost are excluded. Inter-Data Center Connectivity: This typically includes: transmission cost and hardware cost for the fiber, both utilized and unutilized (dark fiber) and the switches and controllers. Data center remote communication networks are dedicated networks that are segregated or isolated from the general purpose Local-Area Data Networks (LAN), Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) or WAN. General purpose or shared network cost are excluded.

Disaster Recovery is defined as: Disaster Recovery Contracts (Compute and Communications) for Hot Sites (Shell facilities), Dedicated Hardware, Software, and Connectivity.

Facilities/Occupancy is defined as:

Costs for Power/Heat Management, furniture, access systems, office space, raised floor etc.

Personnel Costs/FTEs
Personnel (salaries and benefits) costs/FTEs include in-house and contract personnel costs/full-time equivalents supporting the following IT functions: Operations/Maintenance: Operations support and production control.

Engineering Technical Services: Systems Support Change and release management, problem and incident management, performance monitoring and management, physical database administration, capacity management, system security management.

Planning and Process Management: This includes systems research and planning, process development and management, project management as well as data center disaster recovery planning.

Services Administration: This includes product management, budget, chargeback and service level reporting, training (IS and end-user training), asset management (procurement, asset and configuration tracking) as well as account management (both business unit relationship and contract and service provider management).

Management and Administration: IS Administration provides direct administrative and clerical support to all organizations related to the technology environment. Management: This area includes time spent by management personnel on supervisory, departmental administration, or strategy related tasks. Facilities Management: The management of physical data center premises, and other facilities and services associated with the premises such as furniture, power supply, heat management, access security, floor space, office space etc.

Workload
Total Operating System (OS) Instances is defined as: The count of the total OS environments which were available across all physical server boxes in the server category during the year.

Unix Cost per OS Instance

Unix cost per OS Instance is often used to evaluate the relative cost efficiency level of the overall Unix environment. While total OS instances represent total capacity under management, it should be considered within the context of business requirements (service levels); utilization levels, virtualization density, and overall enterprise compute strategy. This unit measure alone does not accurately represent cost related to the actual availability or utilization of resources, nor does it provide any insight into the cost associated to specific tiers of service levels delivered. Service level dynamics such as availability, and recovery objectives, all need to be considered in tandem with factors such as the number and size of databases, as they are the primary drivers and fundamental context for a cost efficiency analysis.

Best in class organizations would measure cost efficiency metrics as outlined in tandem with the associated quantity and quality of services delivered. However, we find some organizations have difficulty taking inventory of the total cost structure alongside the total number of OS Instances supported within their enterprise; therefore this measure can be very useful in establishing a foundational baseline and framework to build from. Unix Server Cost Distribution

The distribution of Unix server costs provides an understanding of how costs are dispersed within the Unix environment. This distribution helps to outline non-personnel vs. personnel related cost allocations to support the environment. The degree in which an organization outsources can play a significant role in altering this distribution as personnel costs are typically the primary expense. Figure 2. Unix OS Instances per FTE

OS Instances per FTE provides a look at dedicated FTE productivity levels. Understanding the productivity level of your IT staff in terms of units supported can be very helpful in establishing efficient and effective workflow as well as in terms of ensuring your support staff is the right size. If your support staff is supporting more than the middle 50 percent of the published sample, is this level of productivity sustainable? How will you adapt to required future growth or complexity? What tools do they have available to them and what is their impact on productivity? If the level of productivity is low, how does this compare to the service levels, the cost structure, the skill level of the support staff or the level of environment complexity? In addition to these factors, staff productivity metric drivers include, the degree you are outsourced, your utilization rate, (how does this vary between peak and off peak?), and the level demand supported by the FTE to meet business requirements. Performance Measurement Solutions from Gartner

While financial analysis of IT provides valuable insight into operational efficiency, our analytics go beyond the budget to understand and compare ITs efficiency and effectiveness, enabling IT to demonstrate value to the business, leverage external markets and reduce costs. I&O benchmarks are a starting point in helping IT organizations identify and assess IT cost and performance levels against peers. Our benchmarks are based on defined-consensus models, which examine the performance of mainframe, Windows server, Unix server, storage, voice and data networks, and end-user computing and IT service desk environments. We understand the key issues youre facing. Modernization and consolidation. Modernization and consolidation projects offer the opportunity to assess financial goals, as well as control costs while staying competitive. Our benchmarks establish baseline costs, evaluating scenario options and continuous measurement to ensure success. Cloud computing is impacting business operations. You need a framework to evaluate current and future-state goals. Our benchmarks utilize a five-stage road map to analyze the efficiency and effectiveness of the strategy. Virtualization. The technologies/techniques that make cloud viable are already making internal infrastructures more efficient and effective. Our benchmarks identify your relative level of virtualization and provide comparative data for understanding the impact of decisions to implement it. IT service portfolio looks at services in business terms, specifying what they are, how they are bundled and their benefits. Product-, process- and platform-neutral, it is an important communication and relationship management tool. IT service catalog decomposes services into specific offerings, including chargeback methods, pricing, service-level options, limitations/exclusions and escalation commitments. Service portfolio and catalog comprise a steppingstone for the I&O organization to evaluate its cloud opportunities. Networking. Enterprises have become more dependent on networks to conduct business, making stability a necessity; as spending increases, so does the difficulty of managing these networks. Our benchmarks cover wired and wireless networks in WAN, LAN, MAN, Internet, VoIP, local and long-distance voice. Our benchmarks are a starting point in helping IT organizations identify and assess IT performance against peer organizations.
